The low frequency phase characteristics of microphones in a monitoring system are crucial for characterizing large-scale natural and artificial activities—e.g., earthquakes, nuclear explosions, or rocket launchings. At present, microphones are simultaneously calibrated using in-situ or calibrator methods to get their phase consistency. However, the essential primary calibration, which traces their phase sensitivity to basic physical quantities, is grossly overlooked. Recently, we speculated that the microphone phase sensitivity is acoustically controlled by the pressure leakage and heat conduc

These sensors can be coupled with mechanical units which, by granting an additional degree of freedom to the movement of the LRF, enable the 3D perception of a scene. To be successful, this reconstruction procedure requires to evaluate with high accuracy the extrinsic transformation between the LRF and the motorized system. Abstract The theory of calibrated geometry was invented by Harvey and Lawson in their seminal paper [151], which is still an excellent reference. It concerns calibrated submanifolds, a special kind of minimal submanifold of a Riemannian manifold M , which are defined using a closed form on M called a calibration. It is closely connected with the theory of Riemannian holonomy groups because Riemannian manifolds with reduced holonomy usually come equipped with one or more natural calibrations.

One place to look to explore the ritualized linkage of drinking and speaking is to explore what kinds of metricalized calibrations exist between the obviously semiotic order of speaking and the material order of drinks. When drinking is embedded in a ritual action, accompanied by a performative utterance such as a toast, drinking is closely calibrated to talk and foregrounded as being in itself a performative act

Abstract In Chapter 4 we defined calibrations and calibrated submanifolds. We now apply these ideas to manifolds with exceptional holonomy. There are two types of calibrated submanifolds in 7-manifolds with holonomy G 2, called associative 3-folds and coassociative 4-folds, and one in 8-manifolds with holonomy Spin(7), called Cayley 4-folds. Coassociative 4-folds can be defined in terms of the vanishing of a closed form. This implies that they behave rather like special Lagrangian submanifolds in Chapter 8, so that moduli spaces of compact coassociative 4-folds are smooth, for instance.
