Full textThe study presents the analysis of precast concrete column base in the connection socket. This research follows previous studies on this connection type. The research aim to fill out the lack of information about column base in the embedded length, because almost do not exist recommendations about this subject. An experimental investigation was developed with the construction of two models, which connection sockets were reused from previous researches. The models have smooth contact interface with different embedded lengths and the axial load with great eccentricity was applied in the models. Numeric simulations are presented by using the Finite Element Method adopting non-linear physical, geometric, and contact. A comparative analysis was done between the tests and numeric models that were observed the displacements, longitudinal and transversal reinforcement strain, cracking, and stress flow. The results show that the ruin of the models occurred for large strain in longitudinal tensioned reinforcement located out of embedded length. The transversal reinforcement presents little strain. Recommendations are made for anchorage of longitudinal reinforcement and at the end of the research an analytical model for column base behavior is suggested for connecting foundation by socket

Full textThis research presents an analysis of socket base connections of precast concrete structures, with emphasis on the e orts of transverse walls. In the experimental program were tested two prototypes subjected to bending with great eccentricity: one with smooth interface, and other with rough interface through shear keys. It adopted a different detail for main vertical reiforcement, concentrating them around the corner, and was adopted for the socket, a thickness less than that recommended by the technical literature. Based on experimental results were performed the analysis of the strenght of prototypes, the deformations of the reinforcement, and the deflection of the walls. It was performed an analysis of experimental results with a design model of the technical literature regarding to the forces resulting in main vertical and horizontal reinforcement located on the transverse walls of socket, considering two different situations of behavior to transverse walls: bending-tension and tension. Analyzing the results, it was verified that the vertical reinforcement located near the corners effectively contributed to the strength of the prototype with smooth interface. It has been proved that the walls were subjected to a bending tension and that the theoretical model applied with 15% of bending and 85% of tension gives the best results, when compared with the values obtained experimentally.

Full textThis research presents a study about the socket base with pedestal walls. The paper was drawn from a review and synthesis of results of experimental and numerical studies carried out at the Engineering School of São Carlos University of São Paulo (EESC-USP) about the socket base connection by pedestal walls in precast concrete structures. These studies include a Phd thesis and three MSc dissertations, which addressed several situations of design of that kinf of connection. From the results, recommendations are drawn for the design of socket with smooth and rough interface and precast column base. Included also evaluated at the erection situation and constructive provisions regarding socket base. With some applications are analyzed the design recommendations and simulated real cases of use of column-base connection by socket. Based on this study, the main conclusions that were incorporated into the recommendations were about: a) local of application of the top pression resultant; b) behavior of transversal walls; c) normal force with small eccentricity; d) determination of the thickness of pedestal wall and; e) adaptation of column base model with the socket model. Finally, examples are drawn about socket foundation design with smooth and rough interface and of the precast column base, beyond simplified script with recommendations for the design of these elements.

Full textThis research presents a theoretical-experimental analysis of column-foundation connection through socket of precast concrete structures, with emphasis in pedestal walls. The experimental program included five models submitted to normal load with large eccentricity, changing the type and the condition of interface: three models had smooth interface and two models had rough interface. In two of smooth models, the bond was eliminated to represent the more appropriate situation of design. Two different configurations of shear keys were used in rough models. Numerical simulations, by finite elements method, were developed on the smooth models without bond, using physical and contact non-linear analyses, and on the rough socket connections, using physical non-linear analyses and perfect adherence of interfaces. The experimental results indicated the need to revalue the principal design methods for this connection. In that way, a design model was proposed for the smooth socket connection, considering friction between the interfaces, and the design of longitudinal walls was suggested as corbels. As it was verified the proximity of rough physical models behavior with a monolithic connection, its vertical reinforcings design was recommended, admitting the total transfer of the efforts. Numerical models had a good convergence and likeness with cracking and tensions field of physical prototypes, in spite of deformations have been smaller than experimental results.

Full textThis research is an experimental analysis of column-foundation connection through socket of precast concrete structures, with the reduced depth of the socket comparing to that recommended by the NBR 9062:(1985). The experimental program included two models submitted to normal load with large eccentricity, changing the type and the condition interface: one model had smooth interface and other had rough interface. At both models, it was tried to eliminate the bond on the interface to represent the more appropriate situation of design. With the experimental results, it was possible to analyze each model behavior concerning reinforcements deformation, the socket displacement, cracks configuration during the tests and the maximum strength reached by each model. A comparative analysis was made of these models with those studied at a previous research, that had a depth of the socket recommended by the brazilian normalization. The main design models found at the technical literature were also applied to verify the efficiency of each one for strength capacity of the connection, comparing the results with those obtained experimentally. Based on all analysis, it was possible to conclude that with the depth reduction of the socket, the strength capacity also reduced and the design models that better represented the sockets with the recommended depth no more represented the reduced one

Full textThe rationalization and the industrialization of the civil constructions have stimulated the construction process based on precast elements. One of the main designer\'s worries is about the behavior of the joints between precast elements, and the joints between superstructure and the foundations which are determinant in the construction stability and behavior of elements. In reason of the mechanism of transference of the forces from column to pile-cap by socket connections, the behavior of pile-caps with joints for precast columns has some specificity. The behavior of four-pile caps with embedded socket for precast columns joints is studied in this research. The study is based in nonlinear numerical analysis of three dimensional models considering the cracking in concrete, the reinforcement and the joint interface. The behavior of pile caps under centered and eccentric vertical force is described by ultimate force, cracking patterns, principal stresses flow and reinforcements strains. The results suggests that occurs the transfer of forces from column to the pile cap in the socket walls with smooth interface, however the intensity is not enough to form the struts, and the risk of development of punching shear in pile caps which columns are connected by smooth interface socket walls.

Full textThe present research studies the behavior of two pile caps reinforced concrete used in column-foundation connection of precast concrete structures, submitted to centered load. This situation allows that pile-foundation connection can occur by socket, which can be embedded, partially embedded or external, with socket walls over the pile caps. The research presents an experimental and numerical study of two pile caps reinforced concrete with external, partially embedded and embedded socket, submitted to centered load, using 1:2 scaled models. These models present the socket walls with rough and smooth interface. The results are compared with two reference models, which present a monolithic connection between pile caps and column. Three-dimensional numerical analyses using software based on finite element method (FEM) were developed considering the nonlinear physical behavior of the material. It was observed that pile caps with rough interface present stiffness and ultimate load greater than pile caps with smooth interface. Additional reinforcement using on models with smooth interface add a 15% resistance on models, but this effect did was not observed on the model with rough interface. Particularly, models with smooth interface and embedded socket present a flexible pile caps behavior.

Full textThe present research studies the behavior of two pile caps reinforced concrete with embedded socked used in connections of pre-cast concrete structures. It was particularly evaluated the effect provoked by the locking beam on the pile-caps when supported by the socket lateral walls. Three-dimensional numerical analyses using software based on finite element method (FEM) were developed considering the nonlinear physical behavior of the material. To evaluate the adopted software, a comparative analysis was made using numerical and experimental results obtained from other software. In the pile caps studied, it was noticed a variation in the wall thickness, socket interface, strut angle inclination and action on beam. The results show that the presence of beam does not change significantly the pile caps behavior and that the socket wall is able to transfer effectively the force from the beam to the pile caps. By the tensions on the bars of longitudinal reinforcement, it was possible to obtain the force on the tie and the strut angle inclination before the collapse of models. It was found that the angles present more inclinations than those used in the design, which was made based on strut and tie model.
