Abstract:
Boom editor Jon Christensen interviews author Richard Rodriguez. Rodriguez has lived in California nearly all of his life. So what is it that now makes him say he once was but is no longer a California writer? There is something world-weary in the statement. Rodriguez has seen too much of the world in California, and perhaps too much of California in the world. At his writing table in his apartment in San Francisco, Rodriguez spoke with Boom about California’s soul, why he is no longer a California writer, what’s the matter with his hometown, San Francisco, these days, and love.

California juniper does not occur in the Sierra San Francisco today, although “relict” populations of a few chaparral taxa still occur at higher elevations. Between 15 March and 29 July 1998 we quantified aggressive movements (AMs) in a breeding colony of 44 adult magellanic penguins (MPs) during their nesting season at San Francisco Zoo (SFZ). We sampled their behavior for a total of 149.5 hrs in 46 sessions of 195 min each, all starting at 0945 hrs and stopping at 1300 hrs. We recognized 4 types of AMs, of which 2 (eye-pointing and charging) were threat signals, I (bill-fencing) was a ritualized contest of strength and agility, and I (biting) was physical attack. Population abundances of English sole within the San Francisco Bay from 1973 to 1981 showed a significant positive correlation with Delta outflows, and a significant negative correlation with salinity. Temperature in the bay and ocean upwelling showed no correlation with English sole abundance in the Bay. Because of the positive correlation between the abundance of English sole in the South San Francisco Bay and Delta outflow, this study suggests that any factor resulting in a reduction in outflow may reduce the abundance of English sole in the sample area.
