Safaie, Ava. "Understanding How Callings Develop| A Phenomenological Study of Millennials' Lived Experiences of Discerning a Calling Through Meaning-Making." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13812989.

Abstract:

This phenomenological study seeks to explore the lived experiences that have led Millennials through a meaning-making process to discover their callings. The primary research question framing this study addresses what the relationship is between Millennials’ meaning-making process and the discovery of their calling. Secondary questions address how Millennials who have found their calling define and conceptualize the concept and sources of calling, what the lived experiences are that have led Millennials to discover their calling, and how Millennials make meaning of the experiences and influences that have led them to discover their calling.

Perceiving and living a calling is associated with various life and work outcomes such as life satisfaction/meaning, job satisfaction, and meaningful work. However, little is known about how callings develop. Furthermore, there remain conflicting views on the conceptualization and source of calling. In addition, the existing research on calling is focused primarily on previous generations, university students, and individuals of religious-based backgrounds. It is important for researchers and practitioners to understand how members of the Millennial generation develop a calling, because this generation is currently in the workforce and is reported to be the biggest U.S. generation yet. While there is significant research on the career expectations of Millennials and how they value meaning in their work, there is little known about what experiences lead them to develop their callings and how they make meaning of those experiences to discern their callings. Thus, this study extends the body of research beyond these groups to Millennials who are currently in the workforce and living their callings in order to ensure that their perspectives and experiences of calling are incorporated into the literature.

Eight Millennials who are currently living their calling were selected for participation in this interview-based study. The findings of the study are presented within the following three main themes: the conceptualization of calling, the lived experiences in developing a calling, and the meaning-making process as it pertains to developing a calling. Bases on these findings, conclusions were developed and implications and recommendations are suggested.

Gazica, Michele Wilk. "Unanswered Occupational Calling: The Development and Validation of a New Measure." Scholar Commons, 2013. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5220.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a limited body of research that illuminates the various positive life-, health-, and work-related outcomes that an individual may experience through the pursuit of his or her occupational calling. An occupational calling is defined as an occupation that a person feels drawn to, finds intrinsically enjoyable and meaningful, and identifies as a central part of his or her identity. The extant literature on occupational callings, however, rarely considers the possible detrimental effects of having an occupational calling other than to explain unexpected study results. These unexpected study results hint at adverse psychological and job-related outcomes when an individual fails or does not have the ability to pursue an occupational calling, a concept this paper refers to as an "Unanswered Occupational Calling." An Unanswered Occupational Calling is specifically defined as an occupational calling that an individual perceives, but is not currently pursuing. Scholarly work is needed to explore the individual and organizational consequences of an individual's experience of an Unanswered Occupational Calling. Consequently, the purpose of this research was twofold: (1) to develop and generate preliminary construct validity evidence for a newly developed Unanswered Occupational Calling instrument; and (2) to explore the nomological network of the Unanswered Occupational Calling construct. To that end, I conducted two studies, the first of which was required for initial scale construction. The central purpose of the second was to explore the nomological network of Unanswered Occupational Callings. Overall, Study 1 and 2 supported the construct validity of the newly developed Unanswered Occupational Calling instrument. As expected, the Unanswered Occupational Calling instrument was shown to relate positively to intrinsic work motivation and negatively to work engagement, job involvement, career commitment, and answered occupational callings. Also as expected, those who more strongly endorsed an Unanswered Occupational Calling also tended to experience more physical symptoms, psychological distress, and withdrawal intentions and less job and life satisfaction. These results are consistent with previous research that suggested that there may be detrimental effects of perceiving, but not pursuing, an occupational calling.

Ecker, Diana L. "The Calling Gap| Investigating Belief and Fulfillment of Calling for Pastors." Thesis, Seattle Pacific University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10934100.

Full text
Abstract:

While having a calling can produce great results, in recent studies on calling the key to reaping the rewards has been closely linked to being able to live out the call. For pastors in particular, “The Call” is fundamental to their lives and work. Most enter the ministry because of a deep sense of calling from God. A pastor’s relationship with God is also key in this experience and was hypothesized to be a factor in the calling model for this career subgroup. The goal of this study was to explore how pastors experience calling in their lives and work; specifically, the relation between belief in their calling, fulfillment of that calling, life satisfaction, and how satisfaction in their relationship with God might interplay throughout the process. After accounting for missing data and outliers, the study sample consisted of 144 pastors enrolled in an online leadership development tool. Participants ranged in age from 23 to 98, 80% identified as male, and 98.6% were Protestant. Regression analyses were performed using the PROCESS macro in SPSS to estimate a moderated mediation (Model 58). The proposed mediated relationship was significant, with calling fulfillment mediating the relationship between calling belief and life satisfaction for pastors in this sample ( R2 = 0.215, F(2, 141) = 19.274, p < .001). The proposed moderating role of satisfaction in relationship with God was not a significant predictor at either proposed stage. Overall, these results reveal that for pastors, the key in the relationship from calling to life satisfaction is living out the calling.

Abstract:
Every local church, although part of a greater denomination, finds itself in a unique context with unique ministerial needs. It is of the utmost importance for every local church to be contextual in its ministry, to eventually being effective in its ministry. To make this possible a Scriptural view of the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church, currently not existing, is a key factor. The primary goal of this research is to provide guidelines to churches to assure the contextualization of their calling and ministerial strategy. This is done by motivating the necessity thereof, and by providing Scriptural principles for the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church. The research is done according to the practical-theological methodology of Gerben Heitink (1 999). • The first part of the study consists of a hermeneutical process giving perspective on the current state of affairs in ministerial theory and practice, as well as providing Scriptural principles. Chapter 2 of the hermeneutical investigation wants to determine in what manner the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church is currently being recognized when a local church determines their specific calling and ministerial strategy. Furthermore a brief overview is given regarding the state of affairs in South Africa which has an effect on the climate in which ministry has to take place. This ensures the contextualization of the study. In Chapter 3 Scriptural principles are developed regarding the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church. In Chapter 2 a description is made of the situation that has to change and in Chapter 3 the principles are developed by which the change has to take place. The research in Chapter 3 focuses on the periscope of Acts 21:17-26 and related periscopes. • The second part of the study comprises of an empirical investigation of Afrikaans speaking reformed church members in Eastern Pretoria to determine how they view the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church. • The third part comprises the strategic perspective that integrates the research results of Chapters 2, 3, and 4 to develop a theory of practice. This practical theory provides guidelines to local churches to help them determine their specific calling and ministerial strategy in the light of the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church. The result of this study shows that the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church is a key factor in determining the specific calling and ministerial strategy of a local church to ensure their obedience to Gods calling. Beacons were developed in the light of the Scriptural interplay and presented as guidelines for the local church. The beacons are in short: 1 - Identifying the unique context; 2 - Ascertaining of the current interplay; 3 - Ascertaining of the Scriptural interplay; 4 - Breaking through traditions; 5 - Create balance in the interplay; 6 - Ensure unity in communal interest; 7 – ensure diversity, not in own interest; 8 - Accommodating each other.

Shea, Kathleen. "Video calling with nonverbal children with autism." Thesis, University of Bridgeport, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3667421.

Full text
Abstract:

Twenty five percent of individuals diagnosed with autism are nonverbal and need to learn to communicate using alternative means (National Research Council, 2001) in order to build functional spontaneous communication. Joint attention behaviors are critical for communication development (Mundy & Newell, 2007). This study introduces a video calling intervention to target the joint attention behaviors, eye gaze, verbalization and gestures. The purpose of this study was to discover what relationship exists between video calling and joint attention in nonverbal children with autism and to explore the perspectives of parents and their communication interaction with the child. This case study of two children is a quantitative ABA withdrawal design and a qualitative narrative design. The ABA design uses seven-inch Prestige 7 Connect tablets and Skype, video calling software program to communicate during game, reading and discussion activities. Observing and recording procedures were used to collect the data and visual analysis was conducted using graphs, tables. The narrative design used parent interviews and questionnaires to build themes. The findings indicate that video calling had a positive impact on eye gaze and verbalization behaviors during discussion and game activities. From the narrative analysis emerged a theme of engagement and focus. The conclusions indicate that video calling has impact on some joint attention behaviors and increases engagement in nonverbal children with autism. Implications for this study include using video calling in the classroom for peer interactions and skill building. Further study is needed to increase the generalizability of these findings.

Robbins, Jane M. J. "Tokyo calling : Japanese overseas broadcasting 1937-1945." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1998. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14444/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although largely ignored by Western historians, Japanese overseas radio propaganda during World War Two was sophisticated and wide-ranging. Regular overseas radio broadcasting began in Japan in 1935, after several European powers had already begun such services. Following the Japanese occupation of Manchuria in 1931, research into short-wave radio broadcasting was expanded, and after Japan left the League of Nations in 1933, overseas radio was considered essential to present the Japanese government's views abroad. Radio Tokyo broadcasts began in Japanese and English and were initially directed at the United States. Other languages were soon added and the range of broadcasts extended to Europe, South America and the Pacific region. At its height in 1944, Radio Tokyo broadcast to fifteen transmission regions in thirty-three languages. In addition, Japanese-controlled short-wave stations broadcast from fifteen Asian cities under Japanese occupation Themes used in broadcasts varied according to the war situation and the target country. However, certain common themes were used in broadcasts throughout the war, and to most regions. The Japanese analysis of the war situation often formed the central element of news broadcasts, and reconstruction in occupied regions under Japanese administration was frequently emphasised to indicate the benevolence of Japanese rule. Within Asia, independence from colonial rule was advocated, whilst in broadcasts to the enemy the strength of Japanese combat forces was emphasised. Entertainment programmes were developed gradually from 1935. Most such broadcasts were based on Japanese domestic broadcasts and consisted of serious talks, news and some classical music. It was recognised that this was not the format of popular Western broadcasts and several attempts were made to lighten the output of Radio Tokyo. It was allowed to play jazz music, which was banned within Japan, but it was only by using prisoners-of-war in the production of programmes that the Japanese created truly ''Western-style'' broadcasts. This thesis traces the development of Japanese overseas broadcasting from the first experimental broadcasts to the closure of Radio Tokyo by the American occupation forces in 1945. It also analyses the common themes of radio broadcasts in the China Incident and Pacific War and to assess how successful they were as propaganda. The thesis concludes that Japanese overseas radio propaganda was both sophisticated and flexible in its approaches. It showed little resemblance to the propaganda of Nazi Germany, but more to the propaganda of the wartime B.B.C. Many of its broadcasts contained a high degree of "truth," albeit "selective truth," favourable to Japan. The exception was the propaganda issued by the Army and Navy Ministries, which showed little of the sophistication of regular broadcast material.

Abstract:
Chipmunk antipredator calls were examined during the summers of 1990 and 1991. The structural characteristics of the three calls, chipping, chucking and the trill, were obtained through taped recordings and sonagraphic analysis. Behavioural observations indicated that chucking by choruses of individuals occurs in the presence of aerial predators, chipping by choruses of individuals occurs in the presence of terrestrial predators and the trill is given by single individuals when fleeing from predators.
Experiments were carried out to determine the function of the trill and chipping. Demographic and contextual effects indicate that the trill is in part a call which functions to warn kin but may also indicate to conspecifics that the caller has escaped into a refuge. An experiment with a tethered cat concluded that chipping is likely to function to deter predators from hunting in the area. This is done through vocal mobbing by several individuals whose home ranges overlap.

Newness, Kerry A. "Exploring Calling Work Orientation: Construct Clarity and Organizational Implications." FIU Digital Commons, 2013. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/980.

Full text
Abstract:
Employees maintain a personal view toward their work, which can be referred to as their work orientation. Some employees view their work as their life’s purpose (i.e., calling work orientation) and they tend to be 1) prosocially motivated, 2) derive meaning from work, and 3) feel that their purpose is from beyond the self. The purpose of the current dissertation was to differentiate calling work orientation from other similar workplace constructs, to investigate the most common covariates of calling work orientation, and to empirically test two possible moderators of the relationship between calling work orientation and work-related outcomes of job satisfaction, job performance, and work engagement. Two independent samples were collected for the purpose of testing hypotheses: data were collected from 520 working students and from 520 non-student employees. Participants from the student sample were recruited at Florida International University, and participants from the employee sample were recruited via the Amazon Mechanical Turk website. Participants from the student sample answered demographic questions and responded to self-report measures of job satisfaction, job performance, work engagement, spirituality, meaningful work, prosocial motivation, and work orientation. The procedure was similar for the employee sample, but their survey also included measures of counterproductive work behaviors, organizational citizenship behaviors, conscientiousness, and numerical ability. Additionally, employees were asked whether they would be willing to have a direct supervisor, peer, co-worker, client, or subordinate rate their job performance. Hierarchical regression findings suggest calling work orientation was predictive of overall job performance above and beyond two common predictors of performance, conscientiousness and numerical ability. The results for the covariate analyses provided evidence that prosocial motivation, meaningful work, and spirituality do play a significant role in the development of an employees’ work orientation. Perceived career opportunities moderated the relationship between calling work orientation and job performance for the employee sample. Core self-evaluations moderated the relationship between calling work orientation and job performance, and core self-evaluations moderated the relationship between calling work orientation and work engagement. Collectively, findings from the current study highlight the benefits of examining work orientation in the prediction of workplace outcomes.

Quinn, Iain James Thomas. "A higher calling : the lofty ideals of Victorian organists." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3919/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis charts new territory by examining the figure of the organist within Victorian culture and society. It examines the perception of the organist as a leader in musical life as well as the perceptions that revolved around them. Central to an understanding of the musical ‘figure’ is the role of the organist in pursuing a ‘higher’ course through their endeavours. Seeking a professional role equal to those equal of law and medicine their collective ethos continually strove for self-improvement and self-evaluation. The thesis is arranged in six chapters enveloped by three larger parts. Part I examines the role of the Victorian organist as a composer by focusing on the factors that influenced and inspired their numerous contributions to the sonata genre. The form of the sonata, coupled with the inclusion of a fugue in so many examples, highlights the deeper meaning placed on writing works that were seen as representing higher forms of composition. The Victorian organists aspired to write works that were not simply useful pieces for church or concert use but more significantly works that could be viewed as superior contributions to the great repertoire. It was a definitive role that elevated their profession to increasingly greater heights. Chapter I shows the influence of classical idioms from the 1850s onwards and the relationship of sonatas to the classical tradition. Chapter II looks at the influence of the Leipzig Conservatorium in the 1880s and the impact found on English students who undertook study there. Ultimately a lineage is traced through to Elgar and his seminal contribution to the literature in 1895. The concluding chapter of Part I centres on the aesthetical conditioning factors attached to the emergence of this new tradition and the greater reasoning behind the place of these works in the canon. Part II examines the perception of the organist as seen through literature by studies of Robert Browning and Thomas Hardy, respectively. Through Browning we see the image of a servant in communion with the Divine and in turn a musician set apart from the mainstream. Browning’s reading of the musician Abt Vogler opens the discussion to consider a musician of an earlier era viewed through a Victorian lens. The second chapter of Part II examines Hardy’s narrative of a young woman who plays the organ but runs afoul of ecclesiastical and societal expectation through her personal infidelities. It is a portrayal that cuts to the core of understanding the role of the woman organist in Victorian society. A deeper examination of the role of the woman in sacred and domestic contexts illuminates a provoking conclusion as a study of gendered perception. Part III is devoted to the work of England’s greatest concert organist of the nineteenth century, W. T. Best. Through a study of Best’s programming trends we can observe the role of the civic organist as a music director for the city of Liverpool in all but name. However, beyond the well-known aspects of bringing music to the masses, we can see how Best’s pursuit of higher ideals was manifest in programming that sought a superior ground between the promenade and the scholastic concert. Across six chapters we find musicians tempered by a spirit of idealism that came from within the profession. As their reach was great across the cultural landscape so too was their selective response to conditioning factors of the period. This is exemplified by not only compositional and programming trends but also their portrayal in literature and the relationship of their work to contemporary aesthetical considerations. As such a rich canvas is developed that helps define key areas of our understanding of the Victorian era whilst demonstrating the figure of the organist as a ‘worthy’ seeking a higher calling.

Doris Carroll
Hall and Chandler argued that one of the deepest forms of satisfaction or psychological success can occur when the person experiences work as more than a job or career – when it is a calling (2005, p. 160). They defined calling as work that a person perceives as his purpose in life. Adams (2012) said “there has been a recent awareness of the need to find ways to incorporate meaning into people’s work (p. 66).” Steger defined meaning as “the extent to which people comprehend, make sense of, or see significance in their lives, accompanied by the degree to which they perceive themselves to have a purpose, mission, or over-arching aim in life” (Steger, 2009, p. 680). Historically, an individual received an external calling from God but today another type of calling is being discussed: that of an internal calling. The Student Volunteer Movement or SVM was the name of one of history’s most impactful Christian missionary movements to ever take place, and it originated in collegiate America (Ahrend, 2010). More missionaries were sent out in the first year of the Student Volunteer Movement than had been sent from the United States in the previous century. From 1890 to 1930 the SVM was comprised of 100,000 volunteers who committed to give their lives to the employment of Christian missions. Of those, 20,000 actually left America to live in other countries while 80,000 stayed behind in America. Those who stayed behind formed the Laymen's Missionary Movement to financially support the goers (Ahrend, 2010). During these forty years, this mobilization effort was able to recruit one out of every thirty-seven university students in the United States (Ahrend, 2010). Undoubtedly, there are important implications for understanding the Student Volunteer Movement if you are affiliated with a Christian campus ministry. However, if the Student Volunteer Movement were seen as only religious individuals, then one would have misunderstood the developmental excellence of the SVM. The lessons learned from the Student Volunteer Movement, transcend religious boundaries. Examining the Student Volunteer Movement helps student development educators create new ways to support students as they discover their calling. Additionally, it has implications for how faculty and professionals advise students who have calling. This paper provides an example of the relationship between student affairs professionals and spiritual development among students. This comprehensive analysis of the Student Volunteer Movement informs student affairs professionals how best to support a student’s holistic development.

Malmström, Josef. "Preprocessing of Nanopore Current Signals for DNA Base Calling." Thesis, KTH, Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap (EECS), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-286343.

Full text
Abstract:
DNA is a molecule containing genetic information in all living organisms and many viruses. The process of determining the underlying genetic code in the DNA of an organism is known as DNA sequencing, and is commonly used for instance to study viruses, perform forensic analysis, and for medical diagnosis. One modern sequencing technique is known as nanopore sequencing. In nanopore sequencing, an electrical current signal that varies in amplitude depending on the genetic sequence is acquired by feeding a DNA strand through a nanometer scale protein pore, a so-called nanopore. The process of then inferring the underlying genetic sequence from the raw current signal is known as base calling. Base calling is commonly modeled as a machine learning problem, typically using Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) or Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). In this thesis, we seek to investigate how preprocessing of the raw electrical current signals can impact the performance of a subsequent base calling model. Specifically, we apply different methods for normalization, filtering, feature extraction, and quantization to the raw current signals, and evaluate the performance of these methods using a base caller built from a so-called Explicit Duration Hidden Markov Model (ED-HMM), a variation of the regular HMM. The results show that the application of various preprocessing techniques can have a moderate impact on the performance of the base caller. With appropriately chosen preprocessing methods, the performance of the studied ED-HMM base caller was improved by 2 - 3 percentage points, compared to a conventional preprocessing scheme. Possible future research directions for instance include exploring the generalizability of the results to deep base calling models, and evaluating other more sophisticated preprocessing methods from adjacent fields.

Abstract:
This study examined selected factors that affect calling characteristics of male Hyla cinerea at breeding sites within the Kissimmee River Basin. The primary objective of this research was to assess the relationship between meal mass and body condition to call characteristics of males during the breeding season. I gathered data on calls and collected males in Rattlesnake Hammock Marsh located in the Kicco Wildlife Area. I extracted triglycerides with petroleum ether. I used thin-layer chromatography to verify the presence of triglycerides in the extract. I analyzed call characters using Canary v. 1.2.1. Additionally, I examined the relationship between call characters and triglyceride levels and meal mass using correlation analyses. My study demonstrated that trunk muscle triglyceride levels are correlated to call characteristics and are associated with recent food intake and body size. Additionally, a descriptive study of the general habitat use and behavioral patterns of male H. cinerea in the Kissimmee River Basin was conducted.

Throsby, Karen. ""Calling it a day" : the decision to end IVF treatment." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2002. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/110/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the experiences of women and couples who have undergone in vitro fertilisation (IVF) unsuccessfully and who have subsequently stopped treatment. The thesis is feminist in that it aims to make visible the gendered power relations within which IVF failure is experienced and accounted for. IVF is viewed here not as a neutral artefact, or the violent imposition of male power, but as a form of disciplinary technology, the experience of which is always contradictory and ambivalent. The thesis takes a discourse analytic approach to the interview data. This approach necessarily conceptualises the participants as active, but constrained, agents in the production of meaning in relation to IVF, and the analysis seeks to identify the discursive strategies which they employ in accounting for their experiences. It is argued that those who have stopped treatment occupy an ambiguous liminal space among the dominant discourses of gender, technology and body, and that this constitutes an unusually productive location from which to think about IVF, both in terms of challenging the apparent inevitability of those discourses and creating openings for the production of new knowledges. The analysis is organised around four key themes which emerged from the interview data: the negotiation of discourses of nature and technology; the location of IVF within consumer culture; the distribution of responsibility when treatment fails; and the seeking of resolution around the end of treatment. This thematic structure forms a platform from which to consider not only the specificities of the experience of IVF failure, but which also generates broader insights at the theoretical and conceptual level, focusing particularly on the limitations of oppositional paradigms of transgression / conformity, material / discursive, agency / constraint and theory / practice in the feminist theorising of IVF.

The advent of DNA sequencing has revolutionized biological research by providing virtual blueprints of living organisms and offering insights into complicated biochemical processes. DNA sequencing is a process encompassing both chemical reactions and signal processing techniques to identify the order of chemical bases in a DNA molecule. In this thesis, we focus on the base-calling stage, during which base order is estimated from data collected through electrophoresis and florescence detection. In particular, we examine the possibility of jointly base-calling two superposed DNA sequences by applying the sum-product algorithm on factor graphs. This approach allows a single electrophoresis experiment to process two sequences, using the same quantity of reagents and machine hours as for a single sequence. A practical heuristic is first used to estimate the peak parameters, then separate those into two sequences (major/minor) by passing messages on a factor graph. Base-calling on the major alone yields accuracy commensurate with single sequence approaches, and joint base-calling provides results for the minor which, while being of lesser quality, incurs no additional cost and can be ultimately used in the genome assembly process.

Abstract:

Developing a smart home environment for the assistive living requires great efforts. The key element of the smart environment is the ubiquitous voice user interface with several additional capabilities such as the recognition of several gestures, which can be a new feature of voice controlled devices. There are many identification technologies used in current intelligent guard systems. Relative to other techniques, the voice recognition technology is generally regarded as one of the convenient and safe recognition techniques. The assistive device project has incorporated the technology of voice recognition to perform the GSM calling. Arduino UNO is the microprocessor used to create an interface between the voice module and the GSM module SIM900. Platform was developed using inexpensive hardware and software elements available on the market People with disabilities showed high robustness for assistive device. Sample voice commands were stored in the temporary memory for the ATMEGA 328P when field tests with several sets of voice commands was done. The GSM module SIM900 could easily connect to the local cellular network carriers. Hence voice recognized emergency calling can be the future of biomedical field.

O lobo-guar?
The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus Illiger 1815) is the biggest canid in South America and it is considered a ?near threatened? species by IUCN. Because of its nocturnal, territorial and solitary habits, there are still many understudied aspects of their behavior in natural environments, including acoustic communication. In its vocal repertoire, the wolf presents a longdistance call named ?roar-bark? which, according to literature, functions for spacing maintenance between individuals and/or communication between members of the reproductive pair inside the territory. In this context, this study aimed: 1) to compare four methods for detecting maned wolf?s roar-barks in recordings made in a natural environment, in order to elect the most efficient one for our project; 2) to understand the night emission pattern of these vocalizations, verifying possible weather and moon phases influences in roarbark?s emission rates; and 3) to test Passive Acoustic Monitoring as a tool to identify the presence of maned wolves in a natural environment. The study area was the Serra da Canastra National Park (Minas Gerais, Brazil), where autonomous recorders were used for sound acquisition, recording all night (from 06pm to 06am) during five days in December/2013 and every day from April to July/2014. Roar-barks? detection methods were tested and compared regarding time needed to analyze files, number of false positives and number of correctly identified calls. The mixed method (XBAT + manual) was the most efficient one, finding 100% of vocalizations in almost half of the time the manual method did, being chosen for our data analysis. By studying roarbarks? temporal variation we verified that the wolves vocalize more in the early hours of the evening, suggesting an important social function for those calls at the beginning of its period of most intense activity. Average wind speed negatively influenced vocalization rate, which may indicate lower sound reception of recorders or a change in behavioral patterns of wolves in high speed wind conditions. A better understanding of seasonal variation of maned wolves? vocal activity is required, but our study already shows that it is possible to detect behavioral patterns of wild animals only by sound, validating PAM as a tool in this species? conservation.

Abstract:
The morale of the federal workforce is probably at an all time low. The malaise that shrouds the federal workforce is primarily caused by a sense of alienation that many federal workers feel. They feel alienated from themselves and from a community. In this book I approach the problem of alienation from theoretical, personal and empirical perspectives. To gain a deeper understanding of the alienation of the organizational employee, one must look at the individual holistically. Using Carl Jung as my guide and employing his theories of the unconscious, spirituality, individuation and psychological type, I develop what I call an organizational personality typology. This organizational personality typology is contrasted with the more conventional and more one-dimensional organizational role typologies developed by organizational theorists such as Anthony Downs in Inside Bureaucracy and Robert Presthus in The Organizational of contact with their environment and themselves, a sense of meaninglessness and alienation, and an obliviousness to messages from their unconscious. Other people choose the journey of heroism. The heroic journey as portrayed in the heroic myth serves as a model for those people in search of psychological health and spiritual sustenance. It is a journey that has three primary stages: the calling, the encounter with death, and the return to the community. Each of these stages has applicability to the American public administration tradition. The heroic journey is not merely confined to the world of myth. The heroic journey, as practiced in the public service, has current exemplars in both novels and in real life. Furthermore, it is a journey that is open to both the GS-3 clerk and the agency administrator. It is an attitude reflective of a life-affirming stance towards oneself and others.

Schindley, Wanda Beatrice Higbee. "Work in the calling in Max Weber's Protestant ethic thesis." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2000. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2668/.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives. Scholars have debated Max Weber's theory of the relationship between religion and capitalism for almost 100 years. Still, the debate is clouded by confusion over Weber's claims about religious doctrine and over the supporting evidence. The purpose of this study is to clarify Max Weber's claims regarding the concept of the calling and the related "anti-mammon" injunction and concept of "good works" and substantiate with historical evidence the religious doctrine Weber describes. Methods. Comparative analysis of early Protestant Lutheran and Calvinist documents from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was used to flesh out a history of ideas to determine whether evidence exists to support Weber's claims related to religious doctrine. Results. Historical analyses revealed that the concept of the calling pre-dated Luther in the Bible. Luther's innovation was not in his use of the word beruf but in his application of the concept of the calling to the common people and his teaching of that idea. The idea of sanctified work was key in both Lutheran and Calvinist documents. There was an increased emphasis on work and encouragement to accumulate wealth in Calvinist documents. Conclusion. Weber's etymological evidence surrounding Martin Luther's use of the word beruf in his German translation of the bible is idiosyncratic and not important to the transmission of the concept of the calling. Luther's application of the concept of the calling to the laity and idea of sanctified work, however, is the foundation on which the Protestant ethic rests, as Weber claims. Weber's other claims regarding the concept of work in early Protestantism are also supported here. Weber did not overstate the implications for societal transformation in early Protestant theology.

In anurans, acoustic communication is related to many different behaviors, either reproductive or territorial. In this sense, this study investigated the reproduction and the acoustic and territorial behavior of Hypsiboas goianus. The study was performed in the Floresta Nacional de Silvânia, municipality of Silvânia, state of Goiás, Brazil. Firstly, we investigated the use of calling sites, the calling pattern of the males along the night and the within-individual variation of the acoustic parameters along the night. We found a positive relationship between male snout-vent length and their distance from the water. The males emitted more aggressive calls at the early hours of the night and the number of advertisement calls emitted increased in the middle of the night. Besides, the repetition rate and interval between notes varied along the night. Additionally, we investigated the reproductive ecology and the dynamics of the territorial behavior of H. goianus. We found no relationship between the size of the female and clutch size, and also between egg size and number of eggs. Matings were not assortative. We also performed two territoriality experiments, which included manipulation of the distance between males and the placement of intruder males next to an established resident. In both experiments the number of calls emitted was influenced by size, and physical combat was rare. The results from this study show that male H. goianus maintain a reproductive strategy along the night and that, for this species, acoustic communication is greatly important in different social contexts.

Abstract:
Research on the definition and conceptual understanding of meaningful work is fragmented. The purpose of this study is to better understand characteristics of people who experience meaningful work. Variables will be selected based on conceptual importance and empirical significance from a range of theoretical perspectives on meaningful work. The following constructs were studied through cluster analysis: (a) meaningful work, (b) authenticity at work, (c) career confidence, (d) work centrality, (e) religiousness, (f) meaning in life, (g) coworker satisfaction, (h) calling, (i) work engagement, (j) career commitment, and (k) work values. A sample of 437 adults who endorsed finding their work meaningful were recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) online data collection service. A two-step process by Gore (2000) was followed for the data analysis. First, hierarchical cluster analysis using the “NbClust” package in R statistical software (Charrad, Ghazzali, Boiteau, & Niknafs, 2015) was used to determine the best number of clusters. Subsequently, k-means cluster analyses were used to assign individual cases to specific clusters.

Lo, Biundo Ester. "London calling Italy : BBC broadcasts between occupation and liberation (1942-45)." Thesis, University of Reading, 2017. http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/77541/.

Full text
Abstract:
In September 1938 the BBC broadcast in French, German and Italian for the first time. The Second World War would break out the following year. The ambiguity of the British propaganda aimed at Italy during the Second World War is clearly reflected in the broadcasts of the BBC Italian Service as well as in the relationships between the British Foreign Office and the Italian broadcasters at the BBC. Radio Londra, as the BBC was known in Italy during the conflict, was concurrently the voice of an occupier and a liberator of Italy from the Nazi-Fascist yoke. Despite this, the station is mainly remembered as the authentic voice of anti-Fascism and Resistance. Drawing on unexplored archival material collected in Italy and the United Kingdom, this thesis aims to understand why the BBC programmes have become one of the myths of Italian cultural heritage of the Second World War. The work takes into account both British and Italian perspectives by answering three main research questions: to what extent the Italian exiles working at the BBC were allowed to operate independently from the British Foreign Office; what the programmes said during the most delicate phases of the Allied Italian campaign in order to engage with as many Italians as possible; and how the programmes were received by the Italian civilians. While answering these questions the research focuses on two key elements: the role played by transnational broadcasts in both creating a European identity and offering ordinary people a window onto a foreign world; and the contribution of the foreigners living in the United Kingdom during the conflict to the development of the BBC as a leading global broadcaster. The thesis argues that the corporation did play an ambiguous role but it was the reception of the programmes in Italy at the time that created the myth of the BBC as an authentic supporter of the Italian antiFascist cause. It also claims that one of the key reasons for the success of the Italian Service was its ability to engage with ordinary people and address their concerns during the difficult years of the war.

This thesis explores why professional services industries stratify into hierarchies and how firms change their positions in those hierarchies over time. Essay one is entitled "Reinforcing feedback between market position and firm capabilities" and asks why Merrill Lynch succeed in building a leading investment-banking practice while rival brokerage firm Paine Webber tried and failed. The two firms' experiences and previous research are used to specify a model of competition among professional services firms. Reinforcing feedback between the nature of a firm's client work and its capabilities and intendedly rational policies lead to a hierarchy of industry competitors. Analysis of the model highlights two key elements differentiating Merrill Lynch's and PaineWebber's efforts to improve: speed in developing capabilities and discipline in accepting and rejecting client work. Essay two is entitled "You are whom you serve." It explores why hierarchies develop in professional-services industries where some firms develop stronger capabilities and execute more sophisticated client work than their rivals do. The paper develops and analyzes a game-theoretic model based on competition in the investment-banking industry. One outcome of the model is an asymmetric competitive structure where firms serve different kinds of customers, charge different prices, and earn different economic returns. That outcome is analyzed over a range of cost structures and client preferences to derive implications for firm size and economic welfare. Essay three is entitled simply "Merrill Lynch and PaineWebber." Sustained differences in profitability are evident among firms within the securities industry. Two firms, Merrill Lynch and PaineWebber, are studied to identify structural and managerial reasons why one succeeded in developing the market position and firm capabilities both sought while the other failed. The paper draws on interviews with current and former employees of the two firms and other industry experts. Interview data are checked and complemented with three decades of underwriting and two decades of merger and acquisition transaction data, annual reports, and data and commentary appearing in the industry press and academic press as well as industry association publications.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the poetry of Audre Lorde and Natasha Trethewey, and the ways in which they bring to attention the often-silenced histories of African American females. Through close readings of Lorde’s poems “Call” and “Coal,” and Trethewey’s “Three Photographs,” these histories are brought to the present with the framework of the words “call” and “re-call.” The paper explores the ways in which Lorde creates a new mythology for understanding her identity as “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet” in her innovative, intersectional feminist poetry. This is used as the framework for understanding modern poets like Trethewey, whose identity as a biracial black woman from the American South colors her lyric, more formal work. Lorde uses the vocal, oral tradition of calling as Trethewey relies on visual, gaze-focused recall. Recall is memory and re-call means bringing the hidden past into the future. The paper concludes by saying that all black female writers may participate in their own ways of calling out the truth and remembering what should be forgotten.

In "American Callings" I argue that late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century American literature dealing with cross-cultural humanitarianism contains a strand that sought to rectify the potentially oppressive shortcomings of humanitarian practice. The authors whose work I examine--novelists William Dean Howells and Albion Tourgeé, reformer Jane Addams, humorist George Ade, and memoirists Mary Fee and George Freer--grappled in their writing with two reciprocal questions. First, they meditated on how humanitarianism shapes, changes, and constitutes the self. Second, they theorized how increased self-awareness and self-criticism might help the humanitarian actor avoid the pitfalls of humanitarian practice that critics, in their time and ours, have seized upon. "American Callings" thus challenges three critiques that have been instrumental to American literary studies for decades: critiques of sentimental humanitarianism's complicity in projects of cultural domination, realism's investment in the status quo, and reform's role in maintaining social discipline through surveillance. The dissertation disputes the prevalent assertion that literature dealing with cross-cultural humanitarianism constitutes a sentimental, imperialistic, and ultimately violent discourse. I accomplish this by looking to instances of what Gregory Eiselein (1996) has called "eccentric" reform, efforts articulated from within a culture but in opposition to certain aspects of it. Drawing on narratives of what I call "humanitarian selfhood" in three historical contexts--industrializing urban centers in the North, the South during Reconstruction, and the Philippines during the U.S. occupation--"American Callings" traces an "eccentric" literary genealogy, one that offers up the humanitarian dynamic as a heuristic wherein the humanitarian agent arrives at a new kind of self-understanding by way of wrestling with the questions raised by service to others. The literature written by and about these humanitarians, I suggest, then provides an opportunity for readers to be transformed, as well.

Abstract:

U.S. rhetoric that embraces immigration is juxtaposed with the lived experiences of Latinx immigrants, the country’s largest immigrant group. Intergenerational research shows how immigrants’ social mobility depends on socioeconomic and environmental factors, impacting occupational attainment. Immigration policies portray immigrants negatively—contrasting deserving/good with undeserving/bad. This study uses d/Discourse (i.e., everyday talk/societal understandings) to investigate how immigrants from different generations make sense of policy, immigrant portrayals, and their lives through the lens of “calling.” Here, calling is used to understand differences across generations, rather than positioned as an individual pull toward an occupation. Specifically, this study answered three questions: (1) What occupational and intergenerational d/Discourses are perceived by immigrants?; (2) Whose interests are served by these d/Discourses and who is marginalized?; (3) How do immigrants experience “callings” across generations? Semi-structured interviews were conducted with different generations of immigrants (N=36). Generational and intergenerational sensemaking themes are identified using d/Discourse, while critical discourse analysis is used to explain inequalities and in whose interests d/Discourses are created. The main theoretical contribution of this study suggests that callings can be enacted and fulfilled intergenerationally. Within immigrant families, first-generation immigrants often hold visions of who their children (second-generation immigrants) will become. This vision often includes high educational attainment, a prestigious occupation, and documentation in the United States. Second-generation immigrants felt a pressure to perform well in school and validate the sacrifices made by their parents. They recognized that the visions for their future constructed by their first-generation parents were riddled with tensions. The occupational decisions of the second-generation immigrants often tried to find a middle ground between fulfilling their parents’ vision but also practicing in occupations that they were personally interested in. Several barriers made the path to fulfilling intergenerational callings more difficult. Second-generation immigrants recognized the privileges they held that their parents did not, including language barriers and acceptance into the country tied to documentation and acceptance based on racial models in the United States. While first-generation immigrants accepted these challenges as part of their intergenerational calling, the second-generation struggled to do the same. Finally, in fulfilling intergenerational callings many immigrants unintentionally reproduced deservingness narratives. In short, this study contributes theoretically and practically by challenging immigrant portrayals and viewing callings as intergenerational but filled with internal and external challenges.
