Full textDoes the traditional african religion usually named animism, impose itself as a principle of unification, a whole part including every thing for the african students of caen ? questioning about the religions feelings of these ones would be as postulating the hypothesis that african students -, convert to islam or christianism on the hand keeping a deep attachement to traditional religions values, on the other hand this affection is one force among others new ones, like scientific statement, the rational organisation of existence, what revealed religions bring to us. The survey, the observation of attitudes and behavior, lead to, confirm that in a general sense, thoses being questioned, recognize and accept the religions fact and the religiosity of the african. Here the attachement to moral and religions values is basic : it's about the respect to the ancestors, the duty of hospitality, solidarity and tolerance, etc. . . For same people being investigated, the relation to animism expressed in terme of exchange and not in terms of a vhole register. Henceforth, the modern rationality and technics are taken into account of thein, context. If we one cannot make any forecasting on the future of animism - traditional structures are collapsing. .

Full textIn the beginning of the seventeenth century, the action of pious circles allowed proliferation of women's monasteries in a diocese where protestantism had been very important among the nobility. To the abbaye-aux-dames and Saint-Laurent convent of Cordillon, founded in middle ages, were added communities from traditionnal and counter-reformation's orders. The communities settled in the diocese with the support of local notables, who could reconcile devotion and patrimonial interest. The number of nuns continued to increase up to the beginning of the eighteenth century. Then, starting in 1720, the spread of jansenism and economic difficulties, linked to the law system, produced a durable slackening of recruitment due to the withdrawal of traditional elites. At the end of the century, the communities were restored by the influx of urban middle class and rural elites. Women's monasteries, forever isolated behind their walls, were organised in societies apart from the world. Rules and constitutions, specific to each order, anticipated every contingency of material and spiritual life. By the end of the eighteenth century, despite the mounting disregard of the progressive elite for women's convents, female monastic life was still accepted and recognized by the majority of people in the diocese, thus permitting its rapid recovery and expansion after the Revolution

Full textThe recent evolution of towns in developed countries is particularly marked by a devitalization fo their town-centres, which is evidenced… Much at the population level (leavings towards the country) as at the activity level (out lying relocalizations…). The suburbs of Caen which counted 200000 inhabitants in 1990 is the theatre of a series of transformations which affect the whole components of the urban space. This dynamic is apprehended through leveral major axis (socio-demographic, political, spatial…) which complementarity allows to understand how and why the urban space is changed. This latter is studied as a whole, insofar as the town-centre transformations affect the other comprenents of the suburb. The result is a reinfercement of town socio-spatial division with the rising of three major poles : from one part, the town-centre and from the over part the north and the west of the suburb ; two poles which registers the most significant changings

Full textThe story of caen in the eleventh and twelfth centuries is that of the rise of a genuine town, in connection with the will of the dukes of normandy specially william the bastard later the conqueror who built a castle, an enclosure and two abbeys. The burgh of caen, founded in the eleventh century, even perhaps by william himself, is the base of this developement. The sources permit to reconstitute its contents (organization and growth of urban space, development of economical activities and political importance) and to study the diverse parts of the urban society

Full textThis work delves into the progressive professionalization of nurses by studying care-taking congregations in the Calvados area. The chosen time frame is 1804 (with the return of religious nurses to hospitals after the French revolution) to 2009 (year of the “HPST” French law or “Hospital, Patient, Health, Territory” law and of the latest reform of nurses’ training in Calvados hospitals). This study is a diachronic analysis of the activity and working context of nurses with an emphasis on the central notion of professionalization. Are today’s lay nurses the inheritresses of these religious caretakers in terms of professional training and activity? This historical research, based on archival documents, describes the working environment of nurses: hospital organizations, technological evolutions and the transformation of their training. Their activity is detailed through historical data and interviews with past nun nurses, the last witnesses of a bygone era. Finally, this analysis identifies four historical periods in the evolution of nursing and determines continuities and disruptions in the history of nursing, from care to cure

Full textThe laws which were enacted in france since 1982, namly the laws which were enacted on march 2nd 1982, january 7th and july 22th 1983, are introducing a new dimension in the relations between the state and local authorities. The objective is to guarantee local autonomy on a threefold basis : -1 a complete reorganization of departemental and regional structures through the transfer of services. -2 the strengthening of departemental and regional authority through the transfer of executive power and a redistribution of competences between the state and local authorities. -3 the replacement of administrative supervision by judicial control. Nevertheless, although this reform has been a success in france, its effect has been rather moderate in the department of calvados. Several factors have been responsible for lessening its effects. These laws have been consecrating previous departemental action in the field of decentralization

Full textWestern France farmers used to distillate their cider in order to obtain a local apple brandy usually called “Goutte”. For a long time, this product had no other ambition than being consumed in the family circle, given as a salary to agricultural workers, or proposed to visitors. The manufacture of Calvados is rooted in regional traditional habits. At the same time, it is a mean to use the huge amounts of apples or pears generously given by nature to this wet and fresh soil of Normandy, especially in Pays d’Auge. However this crafty local production suddenly grew up to be known out of the region and even across the borders. The name “Calvados” itself has turned into a familiar word and belongs now to the renowned alcohol register. The purpose of this thesis is to understand how this alcohol left anonymity and to outline the major steps of its development. . Closely linked to the story of its region, Calvados was granted with benefit factors leading to an industrialized production. But it also had to overcome obstacles before accessing to the label of origin called “appellation d’origine controlée”. This label of origin is considered to be the starting point for a new development. The period goes from 1860, which is the date of first distilleries, to 1960, the year in which the hereditary privilege for home distiller was abolished

Full textRetail marketing policy efficiency has been measured by drawing power in terms store preferences. At home surveys have been organized in four "cantons" (subareas) in Calvados to collect consumer judgments upon relevant variables both in the furniture store choice process and in the retail marketing policy. Cantons have benn chosen in each group defined by a cluster analysis. Dual questionning method has been used to get determinant variables for each canton. Each determinant variable has been assessed on a Thurstone scale by the same interviewees in a second survey to obtain judgments to be integrated in the MCI (multiplicative competitive interation) model after a zeta squared transformation for each furniture store. Then calculated market shares must be weighted regarding relative importance of each canton. A conjoint analysis of promotional offers gives utility values for these promotions which, once introduced in MCI model, provide measured of promotion efficiency. Conjoint data aggregation has been realized with a benefit segmentation. A furniture management tool has been designed

Full textThis dissertation seeks to explore social transformations concerning fishermen and communities who depend on fishing activity. Considered as a “world apart” by a large segment of the population, this sector remains on the fringes of social sciences in spite of the disruptions affecting it. Facing a constant decrease of their total number, confronted to an important ecological crisis but also to a redefinition of the technical working methods, this professional group is seen as passing through deep transformations for the most optimistic observers whereas it is regarded as endangered by the most pessimistic ones. Furthermore, the coming of new populations does not only modify the spatial organization of the port villages, but also the way of living together within the traditional communities. In this context, what is the professionals’ and community members’ state of mind? What kind of resistance do they oppose to these situations? These questions are the most significant illustrations of our approach. The latter will first rely on monographic studies of six local fishing communities from Calvados (France). This empirical basis will then enable us to produce a sociological analysis of this professional group and also an anthropological reflexion on the processes leading humans to interact with nature

Full textWe used a socio-anthropological approach to study the social and political dynamics of an ecological transition. We tried to evaluate the responsibility of the actors of intensive agriculture and of local authorities for the disappearance of peri-urban agricultures, and for the difficulties to implement a local sustainable agriculture. Local authorities are interested in such a development. Some of them consider the settlement of a market garden within city limits. Despite this, the idea of promoting another agricultural model is very recent, and remains hard to grasp for local authorities and for the actors of intensive agriculture. Both have a weak vision of sustainability, which focuses on economy and divides public policies into sectors. For instance, according to them, public policies on housing, mobility, economic development and urban planning have nothing to do with agriculture, nor with the rural world and the urban area food supply. The aim of this research is to demonstrate – using an approach that is not exclusively urban, nor technical – that the implementation of a local sustainable agriculture can become an important tool for city planning. It would increase urban areas’ sustainability, via agriculture and the food resilience it provides

Full textIn the eighteenth century, lower normandy is considered as an agricultural area, but this characteristic does not exclude the existence of sime manufactories. In this respect, in caen, the textile industry holds a privileged place on account of its importance and the tradition on which it in founded. The textile branch is in the hands of masters grouped into corporations within which they whish to keep their privileges as well as the monopoly of the production and sale of various kinds of material and hosiery articles. Essentially based on the analysis of the documents kept in the record office of the "departement du calvados", the present study aims at apprehending the different aspects of the activity of these communities of trades at a time when the reforning spirit questions again the very principle of corporative organization. The radical measures taken by turgot temporarily pull down these century-old structures which are immediately restored, only undergoing superficial alteration, so eager are their supporters to defend them yet. Unadapted to a waning production condement either to modernize or to be in jeopardy, they escape the first measures of the revolution but fade out unnoticed in 1791

A study of the beneficial status of Normandy's clergy, as well as a rough sociological portrait of its members, were thus made possible. The Bayeux diocese's registers of ecclesiastical insinuations constitute a continuous historical source. A close examination of these records has supplied material for a comprehensive survey of benefices in this diocese, together with a detailed list of all the participants in the beneficial system. A study of the beneficial status of Normandy's clergy, as well as a rough sociological portrait of its members, were thus made possible. Under the leadership of François de Nesmond (1662 – 1715), a reformist bishop whose positions were influenced by the council of Trent, the Bayeux diocese went through a period of religious revival. Old ecclesiastical buildings were renovated, new edifices were built, and an ambitious training policy was devised for secular members. By the 1680's, thanks to the creation and development of seminaries, the initiation of ecclesiastic conferences and diocesan synods, as well as the generalization of rural calends, François de Nesmond could rely on a clergy that was not only trained and skilled but also increasingly numerous, as recruiting went up. When the bishop of Bayeux died in 1715, spiritual concerns had prevailed over temporal matters in his diocese, thus lessening the attractiveness of the benefice. Most priest's ecclesiastic careers revolved around a single benefice, which was usually a cure. Family connections and clientelism account for many beneficial promotions, making this an old regime system based on collusion and privileges, akin to public offices

Full textThe 1990 population census points out that among the farmers' wives, nearly a quarter has a salaried activity out of the farm. This enables us to think about the former question of the family sociology : the contradiction between the domestic group's cohesion and the autonomy inspirations of its members. The first part of the thesis presents the expectations and the reactions of the agricultural world (legislators, trade-unions, professionals) in front of the salaried activity. In the second part, the elaboration of a typology ( family-partnership, family-tradition, family-mobility) highligts the plurality of the familiar organization modes in agriculture : the styles of conjugality differ according to the forms of social integration. The third part is an attempt to find precisely, beyond the familiar logics' diversity, the limits and the consequences of the professional individualization process. Women salaried activity doesn't mean the dislocation of the solidarities between husbands and wives, but their recomposition. This recomposition invites us to have a new look on the articulation between independant work and salaried activities. Finally, the women salaried activity participates of a redefinition of the relations between the peasantry and the entire society that does not mean a generalized access to the middle classes but a distingnished modernization

Full textBayeux and lisieux are two former roman towns which became episcopal towns in the middle ages. They experienced a momentary growth in the eleventh or in the twelfth century. From the thirteenth century, they became small ecclesiastical towns. Bayeux built up an amazing system of eighteen parishes (compared with only three at lisieux). Both these towns had a residential area, inhabited by clerics and bourgeois, located in the former roman city. The poor areas were excluded outside the walls of the town. In the fourteenth and the fifteenth century, the population was reduced to three or four thousand inhabitants. At lisieux, the count-bishop exercised a dominating power. At bayeux, the bishop and the chapter had to conform with the royal authority, represented by the viscount. This was even more true (like at lisieux) during the english occupation. In the laic society, the bourgeois were revived at the end of the middle ages. At lisieux, where a new enclosure had been built, they managed in establishing a town government organization. The bourgeois grew richer by the farming of the taxes or the clergy's possessions. They aspired to careers as royal or episcopal officiers. They dreamt of reaching the ranks of the noble class. Some succeeded and acquired rural fiefs. The economy of both these towns was rather limited. However, the world of trades at lisieux was more dynamic : it was successfull in establishing structures. Bayeux and lisieux exercised their influence on small regions (such as bessin on one hand, pays d'auge and lieuvin on the other hand) but that one did not stretch beyond a distance of fifteen kilometers of the surrouding area

Full textThe aim of this theis is to analyse the causes which explain the performance of certain private companies struggling for survival, and thereby contributing to contain unemployment; to lay down a few precepts and ground rules which might be taken into account and which ought to enable these companies to carry on in a sound state, thereby ensuring their contin ued existence. Geographical, historical, and socio-economic observation of the calvados made it possible to get to know the business population the better to situate companies regarding their line of business, their legal status and size. Observation, through reaading a variety of literature, of the risks such companies face, the causes of failure and the conditions req uired for their viability, survival and success had a bearing on the qustionnaire. This served as a basis for the interview with business managers, who were carefylly selected to build up the sample of 59 companies. An analysis of the content of the interviews, based on the constituent ratios, first enabled a list to be produced of companies in hierarchical order (confirmed by discriminant analysis); then processing by factor analysis of the numerous correspondences among the majority responses from managers of businesses classed as successful brought to light the causes of conjunction and opposition of companies and their managers. Determination and explanation of influences between variables (bringing the causes together) contributed to the production of retrospective models of successful companies

Full textEstablishing an outstanding fortress in Honfleur Charles V led the town and its hinterland, especially the Viscounty of Auge, in a military dynamic. This dynamic has remained so long as naval warfare animates the shores of the English Channel. Initial headquarters of the France Admiralty, the naval base quarters high ranking officers and the best privateers. During its military expansion, Honfleur is a population catcher attracting experts, craftsmen and merchants coming from other French provinces or foreign countries. It is a melting pot where all nationalities merge. Military activities and chandlery stimulate local economy even during the English occupation when the harbor and its hinterland worked with the English government. In troubled times and in a context of depopulation, uncultivated areas such as woods and pastures are stable assets. Officers' wages and privateers' catches are locally reinvested, especially in cattle. "Augeron" manors, agrarian investments, scattered in the countryside, reveal the affluence of local elites. The "Honfleurais" and the "Augerons", who are seafarers, prove to show solidarity, to be cultured, enterprising and multi-active. Seeing mobile, a large part of the population moved to the other bank of the estuary of the river Seine when the Havre de Grace was founded in 1517 to engage into international maritime trade which then takes precedence over military activities

Full textThe archaeological excavations carried out between 1988 and 1991 in the long since disappeared roman city of Aregenua have enabled us to explore 2800 m2 of an archaeological reserve situated in the bath quarters, the most remarkable element being doubtlessly a rich urban peristyle dwelling (1421 m2). Although this domus was not exceptionally well conserved, it has the advantage to having been thoroughly excavated, of having enough features conserved to enable us to follow its evolution, and finally, of having yielded a very large amount of architectural and decorative elements (sculptures, painting and mosaic), which paint a very good picture of what the house looked like, and how luxurious it was. We know a lot about the two last phases of the dwelling, thanks to the archaeological study. This leads on to the question of place it actually occupied as regards roman urban residences, and the conclusions clearly seem to point out that the house, although far from being onr of the largest known in the empire, nevertheless counts as a very representative example of the dwellings the municipal elite, which is particularly interesting in the context of research now being carried out on urban dwellings dating to the roman period in Gaule. Besides its contribution to the study, still partial, of urban dwellings, research on the "bas de Vieux" site and the main phases of its development have also brought to light some novel elements concerning the evolution of the quarter and of the town in general

Full textSocialism, which put in appearance between 1865 and 1873 in the form of units affiliated with the First International, was permanently established in Calvados from the very end of the nineteenth century. However, for decades, its foundation remains fragile and its development was also limited, in a department which was akin to a “mission land” for the left wing. The socialist movement did not change status until the 1970s, when, thanks to the upheavals in the economic and social structures of the department as well as changes in the political landscape, it began an ascent that eventually made it the dominant political force in Calvados at the end of the twentieth century. This study traces in all its different aspects (the electoral support, the territorial implantation, the sociological composition, the political fight within the party, the relationships within the left wing…), the story of a medium federation of the Socialist Party established in a hostile environment. It attempts to assess its specificity emphasizing the comparative approach with French socialism as a whole and other federations from the western region, mainly in the agricultural and rural Brittany and in the industrial and urban Seine-Maritime. It is particularly focused on the links between the Socialist Party and an inclusive society and tries to understand whether these relationships have shaped a typical form of socialism in Calvados with an asserted particularity

Full textThe item of this thesis is on the research of the nobility in Vire in Basse-Normandie. The thesis is divided in six parts : the first part tries to count this nobility. In the 17th century, the nobility in Normandy is most important, but in the 18th century, large demographic decline occurs : due to the increase of the single life of the youngest and if the late weddings of the girls. The analysis of the wages of this nobility shows that it's a poor and rural nobility. The noble plongman isn't a legend. The third part talks about the way of life and the education of the noble man. The three last parts try to understand the successoral mechanism and the matrimonial strategies. The main reason of imporesichment of the lineage of the youngests is the real consequence of the share of a noble succession, if the tradition protects more the fief hodler, other reasons exist as the disastrous practice of the proceedings. The consequences of this poverty are marginalized social groups, the loss of noble identity and more secondly criminality

Full textGreater caen is a complex research field, that requires a suitable research method : a geographic information system (or g. I. S. ). At first, it is necessary to organize this method. It includes usual practices from the scientific method : demonstration, theorization, explanation. It also includes additionnal actions needed by the building of a geographic database, and the use of this database with the help of a spatial database management system, especially for geographic spatial analysis and cartography. Next, a geographic database covering several thematic fields in greater caen is built. Several steps help to design a data structure that fits the structure of the phenomena to be described. Coherence of the database is then put on trial, according to various possibilities : combining several thematic layers, making time comparisons, taking location into account, discovering relations between geographic attributes and items. Finally, the geographic database is used for an analysis of urban evolution inside greater caen between 1991 and 1995. The analysis is made up of several phases : identification of land use types, analysis of types'location, identification of land use changes, analysis of changes'location. This analysis leads both to confirm the great features of land use, and to discover signs of modification of some of these features in next years ; it also enlights the importance of human action in the working of a g. Full textOn August 23, 1857, Caen opened the channel that replaces the Orne river to connect its port to the sea creating new opportunities. Its elites supporting the project aren't disappointed by the result. This "tool" allows Caen city to bring out a commercial flair and re birth Basse Normandy iron ore mining around 1875. A German entrepreneur, Baron Thyssen, invests himself in these new opportunities. He participated in defining a new way of producing Steel and Cast Iron: Coastal Siderurgy, taking advantage of local exploitation of iron ore and imports of English coal. The plant is located at the edge of the canal, in the suburbs of Caen. In addition of this triptych, the "Société Navale Caennaise" was created in 1903. It ensures the imports of hard coal for energy needs, and the export of manufactured products. Nevertheless, it does not transform Caen into an industrial port city. During the second half of the XXe century and after evolving during a century, the channel loses a part of its purpose with the disappearance of the "pillars" of port activity. Its futur is still able to federate local economic and political actors essentially based on tourism, which contemporary constitute the basis of its activity, at the estuary of the channel in Ouistreham. This study that describes 160 years of activity, the couple constitued by the canal and the port has not revolutionised the city but who has always managed to evolve regardless of the changes to continue existing

Full textThe present study is focused on complex rotational-translationnal landslides occurring along the coastal slopes of Calvados. The landslides kinematics is characterized by slow and permanent activity ranging from a few millimeters to a few centimeters per year. The slow velocity can be affected by major accelerations explained by combined triggering factors as prolonged rainfall. The complexity of these phenomena is linked to their temporal and spatial heterogeneity dynamics. Furthermore, their location in urban coastal environment induces high socio-economic issues. For better understanding of these complex landslides processes, the study focused on: (1) the internal structure characterization with the help of geophysical, geotechnical and geomorphological data; (2) the hydrological and hydrogeological specificities of the slope with hydrodynamics characterization; (3) the kinematics of the landslides measurement from monitoring network to put in forward the spatial and temporal heterogeneities; (4) the identification of critical piezometric or rainfall threshold inducing acceleration; (5) the assessment of consequences and the risk management linked to several acceleration crisis. And finally the research focused on the actual element at risk and landslide extension possibilities

Full textIn a various geopolitical context, we studied the architecture and the social reasons of the castles in Bessin and Pays d'Auge. After their inventory, we listed them according to the forms, the characteristics of the establishment and the socio-economic level of the sleeping partners. These buildings, despite their ostentatious features, were not that huge. From what exists, with a typological approach, we tried to represent the cultural heritage by taking account of the destruction of the One Hundred Years war and other conflicts. We notice that the settings up of castles were linked to geographic situation (landscapes, climates…) and the agricultural activities. We also observed that the English occupation, the famines, the battles, the epidemics and the socio-economic context, in the XVth century, have highly influenced the construction. Almost monopoly of the nobility in the seigneuries is going to split with the arrival of the enriched middle-class persons who are going to be responsible largely of the burgeoning of buildings observed after the period of conflict. We detailed the contribution of the new techniques of construction, the choices of materials, the presence of privileged rooms like “the upper chamber”, the decoration and the comfort of the residence. A new shape of house is going to appear from the first half of the XVth century in reference to a privileged model, the "house with floor" with new tastes for decorations and, the defence equipment sight especially as a symbol of the social status

Full textIn the 70's, Simone de Beauvoir's writings on old age made the french society aware of the living conditions of the old. Thirty years later, although people generally live longer and have more money when they have retired, has their status really got better ? Such a question leads us to examine the importance of human body in our society. The body models set up by the different powers through the ages, can be seen in representational art. They persist in our modern society. Considering the influence of social models, increasing urbanisation, the hold of free market over science and technology connected with health and physical fitness, we need to redefine the body, which leads to the conception of ageing. A survey conducted on retired people's physical activities in the clubs of calvados confirms the routine and the narrowing acquaintanceship which often go with old age. The study of some effects of those activities show that they should be integrated in a constant process of adults'education

Full textA research study conducted in northwest France, more precisely in the Calvados department, has permitted the identification of the principal types of erosion. The bocage is the principal region affected by the phenomenon. The development of these erosional processes has been induced by a reduction of the traditional types of cultivation. A spatial approach has been taken which uses a scale ranging from the micro-plot to the water shed. The results obtained permit the proposal of a range of simple anti-erosion techniques easily integrated into agricultural practices

Full textThe following dissertation is a comparative study between two cities whose historical circumstances and urban development’s are similar to more than one aspect. One in French, the other Egyptian. We talk about Arromanches and Alexandria. The former, a simple fishing village, is gradually transformed to a maritime industry to become a well-known seaside resort on the Normandy coast. In the other side, Alexandria has grown not only in space, but it is also surrounded by a few summer suburb stations taking advantage of its seaside reputation. This research had to go back about a century so as to control the development of coastal towns from the mid nineteenth century. However, one should not forget the historical aspect; when the Allies during the Second World War, have achieved their victory in Egypt, that of El-Alamein, when Germans had also declined in 19942. This coast reminds us therefore of another victory in France, on the landing beaches in June 1944, in which Arromanches was one of the first battlefield. In addition of the touristic dimension, this paper presents the different studies that have transformed these sites to perpetuate history: how have these two places, which marked World War II, become memorial sites par excellence? Memorials and museums were built, and lands were reserved for many cemeteries. On the other hand, the paper will also show that the official and popular events that have been organized for the memory of the soldiers, who died for freedom, have become annual, with gradually more enthusiasm
