Abstract:
In this study, two strains of seaweed Kappaphycus striatus (Payaka brown and Sacol brown) derived from Philippines after nearly 20 years of cultivation, were cultivated in Van Phong Bay and Cam Ranh Bay (Khanh Hoa, Vietnam) to re-evaluate the growth characteristics, concentration, and quality of carrageenan. The results showed that the ecological area affects the growth (fresh weight, growth rate, dry matter accumulation rate), content, and quality of carrageenan (gel strength and viscosity) of the two seaweed strains after 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 weeks of cultivation. The highest biomass of both strains was reached after 8 weeks of cultivation in Van Phong Bay and 10 weeks in Cam Ranh Bay. The fresh weight, the dry weight, and the growth rate (343.33 g, 42.67 g, 1.30%.day-1, respectively) of the Sacol brown strain were similar to that of the Payaka brown strain at the Van Phong Bay. However, the dry matter accumulation rate (12.45%) and the carrageenan content (24.50%/w) of the Sacol brown strain were highest when cultivated in Van Phong Bay. The growth rate, concentration, and quality of carrageenan in two seaweed strains in Van Phong Bay and Cam Ranh Bay were lower than before.

Abstract:
In our previous study, functional ability and conformational stability had been examined for C-terminal deletion mutants of a 148-residue Ca2+-binding protein, chicken calmodulin (CaM). In that study, we had reported that a mutant named CCMΔ5, missing five residues at the C-terminus, activates CaM-target as much as full-length CaM does. This finding is intriguing because CCMΔ5 lacks the key residues, Met144 and Met145, for the target activation. To uncover why CCMΔ5 displays proper function, here we report the three-dimensional structure of CCMΔ5 bound to the peptide derived from skeletal muscle myosin light-chain kinase (skMLCK). The structure determination was achieved using multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The complex structure of CCM∆5-skMLCK was compared to that of wild CaM-skMLCK. The results showed that the orientation of helix-1 and helix-5 in CCM∆5 differs from those in wild CaM. Moreover, distinctive hydrophobic interaction manner was found in the binding between CCM∆5 and peptide; Phe141, Ala128, Met109, Leu105 and Phe92 of CCM∆5 contribute to the interaction with Trp4 of the skMLCK peptide. Abstract:
Mariculture provides an increasing seafood supply to a growing population. It also brings unintended consequences for the environment, resources, and sustainable development. In an attempt to evaluate the impacts of intensive mariculture of lobster in cages, the water quality and sediment quality in three South-Central regions of Vietnam, Xuan Dai Bay, Van Phong Bay, and Cam Ranh Bay, were monitored from April 2019 to May 2020. In each bay, two stations in the farming areas were compared to a non-farming reference station. The result showed no significant differences in the water quality parameters among the stations within each bay and between the bays. However, sediment quality noticeably differed between sites within each bay and between the bays. The accumulation of the observed parameters of sediment in farming areas was higher than in non-farming areas. In the Cam Ranh Bay, the concentration of organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus in the sediment in farming areas was approximately 1.4 times higher compared to non-farming areas. Similar results were found in Van Phong Bay and Xuan Dai Bay with different magnitudes. Additionally, the difference in the sulfide concentration in the sediment of Van Phong Bay was notable for its better environmental quality than the other two. The findings indicated that mariculture wastes would accumulate in the sediment, and decompose over time, causing sediment degradation, which may affect the benthic biota in coastal waters.

<p>In this paper, we prove that a large class of linear evolution partial differential equations defines a Stokes-Dirac structure over Hilbert spaces. To do so, the theory of boundary control system is employed. This definition encompasses problems from mechanics that cannot be handled by the geometric setting given in the seminal paper by van der Schaft and Maschke in 2002. Many worked-out examples stemming from continuum mechanics and physics are presented in detail, and a particular focus is given to the functional spaces in duality at the boundary of the geometrical domain. For each example, the connection between the differential operators and the associated Hilbert complexes is illustrated.</p>

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine: * what the influence of attitude is on the mathematical achievement of the standerd 8 pupil, * which factors contribute mainly to the attitude of the standard 8 pupil towards mathematics. The literature study defined the concept "attitude" as widely as possible. The relationship between attitude and academic achievement was discussed and special reference was given to mathematics achievement. In the literature study factors which can influence mathematical achievement were also discussed. Special reference was given to: * cognitive and non-cognitive factors, * factors referring to the parents, * factors referring to the school situation, * the influence of the peer group and friends, * other factors which can be related to achievement in mathematics. An empirical investigation was undertaken by means of a self developed attitude scale to determine to which extent attitude towards mathematics can influence achievement in this subject. I.Q. counts and percentages were available from report cards. The most important findings from this study were that attitude influences mathematical achievement to a large extent. Further findings proved that attitudes towards mathematics are influenced largely by the student's previous mathematical achievements, as well as the gender group to which the learner belongs. These findings underline the important role of the teacher, as well as the supportive role of the parents in creating a positive attitude towards Mathematics. The achievement of the learner can be improved by motivation and support. This will result in a more positive attitude towards mathematics and will consequently widen the career choices of the learner.<br>Thesis (MEd (Voorligting))--PU vir CHO, 1996

Abstract:
Thesis (MSocialWork)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This exploratory and applied study was undertaken to compile a generalized profile, understand the target group's needs and to formulate a set of directives for an intervention program for adolescent children of alcoholics. The Christian Action for Dependence (CAD) views alcoholism as a factor that affects every member of the household and adopts a systemic approach for solving this problem. An earlier study proofed that the organization does not provide sufficiently for the intervention of adolescent children whose parents are members of the self-help groups. In order to address this shortcoming, the Teencads (Teenage Christian Action for Dependence) was established in 1997. It functioned as a penfriend's club. The current study was prompted by the need for greater clarity in planning programs for a group like Teencads. A literature study was undertaken to assess the effect of parental alcoholism on adolescents. The research focused on the developmental tasks of adolescence; looked into the child's emotional reaction to parental alcoholism; highlighted the child's reaction in respect of different relationships and determined the effect of parental alcoholism on the academic performance of the child as well as the connection between parental alcoholism and pathological behavior of the child. Classical adaptive behavior by the children of alcoholics was studied by focusing on the contrast between observed behavior and the adolescent's underlying emotional reaction to parental alcoholism. The purpose of the literature study was to look for effective methods of intervention and intervention strategies, and to examine the aims and objectives of international programs that are currently being implemented. The empirical study focused on the CAD in the Western- and Southern-Cape. Twenty seven adolescents were selected by cluster sampling and the snowball technique. They completed a questionnaire that was compiled from the studied literature. The results of the empirical study strengthened the hypothesis that parental alcoholism has a negative effect on the development of adolescents and that social work intervention is a matter of urgency. Based on the results of the study, the researcher proposed policy guidelines for intervention programs for adolescents in the CAD. Guidelines and suggestions for such programs have been formulated. The recommendations of this study are applicable to adolescent children of all alcoholics. Organizations other than the CAD, as well as other social workers, will be able to use these recommendations in the formulation of intervention programs for adolescent children of alcoholics.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'n Verkennende en beskrywende studie is onderneem om 'n veralgemeenbare profiel van die adolessente kinders van alkoholiste vas te stel, asook om te bepaal wat die behoeftes van hierdie teikengroep ten opsigte van 'n intervensieprogram is.

Thesis, North-West University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/10635.

Full text
Abstract:
With the advent of the internet and advances in computing power, the collection of very large high-dimensional datasets has become feasible { understanding and modelling high-dimensional data has thus become a crucial activity, especially in the field of pattern recognition. Since non-parametric density estimators are data-driven and do not require or impose a pre-defined probability density function on data, they are very powerful tools for probabilistic data modelling and analysis. Conventional non-parametric density estimation methods, however, originated from the field of statistics and were not originally intended to perform density estimation in high-dimensional features spaces { as is often encountered in real-world pattern recognition tasks. Therefore we address the fundamental problem of non-parametric density estimation in high-dimensional feature spaces in this study. Recent advances in maximum-likelihood (ML) kernel density estimation have shown that kernel density estimators hold much promise for estimating nonparametric probability density functions in high-dimensional feature spaces. We therefore derive two new iterative kernel bandwidth estimators from the maximum-likelihood (ML) leave one-out objective function and also introduce a new non-iterative kernel bandwidth estimator (based on the theoretical bounds of the ML bandwidths) for the purpose of bandwidth initialisation. We name the iterative kernel bandwidth estimators the minimum leave-one-out entropy (MLE) and global MLE estimators, and name the non-iterative kernel bandwidth estimator the MLE rule-of-thumb estimator. We compare the performance of the MLE rule-of-thumb estimator and conventional kernel density estimators on artificial data with data properties that are varied in a controlled fashion and on a number of representative real-world pattern recognition tasks, to gain a better understanding of the behaviour of these estimators in high-dimensional spaces and to determine whether these estimators are suitable for initialising the bandwidths of iterative ML bandwidth estimators in high dimensions. We find that there are several regularities in the relative performance of conventional kernel density estimators across different tasks and dimensionalities and that the Silverman rule-of-thumb bandwidth estimator performs reliably across most tasks and dimensionalities of the pattern recognition datasets considered, even in high-dimensional feature spaces. Based on this empirical evidence and the intuitive theoretical motivation that the Silverman estimator optimises the asymptotic mean integrated squared error (assuming a Gaussian reference distribution), we select this estimator to initialise the bandwidths of the iterative ML kernel bandwidth estimators compared in our simulation studies. We then perform a comparative simulation study of the newly introduced iterative MLE estimators and other state-of-the-art iterative ML estimators on a number of artificial and real-world high-dimensional pattern recognition tasks. We illustrate with artificial data (guided by theoretical motivations) under what conditions certain estimators should be preferred and we empirically confirm on real-world data that no estimator performs optimally on all tasks and that the optimal estimator depends on the properties of the underlying density function being estimated. We also observe an interesting case of the bias-variance trade-off where ML estimators with fewer parameters than the MLE estimator perform exceptionally well on a wide variety of tasks; however, for the cases where these estimators do not perform well, the MLE estimator generally performs well. The newly introduced MLE kernel bandwidth estimators prove to be a useful contribution to the field of pattern recognition, since they perform optimally on a number of real-world pattern recognition tasks investigated and provide researchers and practitioners with two alternative estimators to employ for the task of kernel density estimation.<br>PhD (Information Technology), North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2014

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a complex legal-institutional system that, on the one hand, offers industrialized countries options for cost-effective emission reductions and, on the other, provides developing countries with opportunities for sustainable development. Investors face the difficulty of identifying suitable CDM projects from approximately 130 possible host countries and nearly 60 possible project activities. In order to develop points of reference for strategic investments, this paper identifies and categorizes the risks arising in the value creation process of bilateral energy projects into four action-related levels. At the host level, the focus is on political-institutional and sector-specific risks, while at the investor state level, the legal design of the CDM's complementary function is relevant. The project level covers technology- and process-related risks, with the identification of the reference case and the proof of additionality posing particular problems. The future design of the CDM and the reform of the procedure at the UNFCCC level pose a fundamental risk. A two-stage assessment procedure is proposed for risk assessment: a rough analysis captures sociographic, climate policy, institutional and sector-specific criteria of the host. The differentiation of the project stage allows the localization of the project in the value chain and a differentiation regarding the use of methods. The assessment of project registration is based on the methods used and gives recognition rates per method and project category; project performance is measured in terms of the ratio of emission reductions actually realized to those planned in the project documentation. A detailed analysis following the coarse analysis provides qualitative guidance for project evaluation. These include the Executive Board's methodological principles, correct application of methodologies, identification of the reference case, proof of additionality, as well as the financial conditions of the relevant sector and publicity-related aspects. Despite individual hosts and project technologies, the developed two-step risk analysis allows, with relatively little effort and in line with business practice, an initial assessment of CDM project risks, so that overall it lays a fundamental building block for the elaboration of a strategic implementation and sustainable investment under the CDM.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: As a common type of clinical dementia, the prevalence rate of vascular dementia(VaD) increased rapidly in recent years, damaging both patients’ health and social-economic prospect. There is currently no effective treatment for VaD, though western medicines can slightly improve patients' cognitive function, but not brought a significant improvement in daily life ability. Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) has been widely employed to treat dementia for more than 2000 years in China. Despite the proliferation of relevant literature, there is still a lack of evidence to prove the effectiveness and safety of such therapy. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis protocol is aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of CHM forVaD. The impact of negotiation for meaning on reading comprehension among Singapore primary students. National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, 2020. https://doi.org/10.32658/10497/22656.

Abstract:
The study follows up on prior research on the key role of negotiation for meaning (NFM) in increasing second language learning and oral comprehension (e.g., Ellis &amp; Heimbach, 1997) and on reading comprehension (Van den Branden, 2000). The investigation described in this report considers whether and in what ways classroom discussions can encourage the types of interactions that are beneficial to language and literacy learning, especially reading comprehension. The intervention encourages a more thoughtful, questioning approach to reading comprehension, integrated with oral interaction that encourages NFM.

Arango, Luis E., Luz A. Flórez, N. Johana Marín, and Carlos E. Posada. Temporary VAT exemption in Colombia: How did household consumption respond? Banco de la República, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.32468/be.1281.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper analyzes whether the policy of VAT exemption days, implemented in Colombia between 2020 and 2022 for some products and merchandise lines, had a positive effect on the consumption of such exempted goods. The evidence shows an intertemporal substitution in consumption of the items that benefited from the VAT exemption policy around the months when the policy came into effect; that is, purchases of these goods decreased in the months before and after the month of the VAT-free day, on which purchases increased. Moreover, we find that the VAT exemption days have a transitory positive effect on the items covered by the policy compared with those not covered. In terms of prices, we also find evidence of a transitory reduction in prices.

Barreix, Alberto Daniel, Martín Bes, Oscar Fonseca, et al. Revisiting Personalized VAT: A Tool for Fiscal Consolidation with Equity. Inter-American Development Bank, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004147.

Full text
Abstract:
As the COVID-19 pandemic ends, the large fiscal imbalances will require Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) governments to pursue fiscal consolidation policies by increasing revenues and/or reducing expenditures. VAT represents 40 percent of total revenues in the region but has a regressive impact that can be mitigated through two alternatives. The first, so called the “universal” strategy, provides relief by identifying those goods and services that account for a large share of consumption among lower-income households and, exempting or taxing them at a reduced rate. Its main weakness stems from the fact that it implies forgoing revenue which could be used to finance public social spending. Additionally, untargeted tax relief confers greater benefits, in absolute terms, to those who consume the most, usually individuals in the upper deciles of the income distribution, and also, multiple rates and exemptions introduce complexity into the management of the tax. The alternative, Personalized VAT (P VAT) strategy presented in this study for four LAC countries overcomes VATs regressivity without puncturing the tax base as the “universal” solution does. P Vat consists of three elements: (i) broadening the tax base, (ii) moving towards a single VAT rate, and (iii) implementing a tax refund for intended beneficiaries, based on the incidence of VAT on consumption among the poorest deciles. Currently, five LAC countries and one Brazilian state are implementing this mechanism.
