Abstract:
New implementations of data analytical processes in democratic politics deeply affect voter-representative relationships and constitute a substantive challenge to voter agency. This paper examines the effects of social media driven data analytics on voter microtargeting and electoral politics using Cambridge Analytica’s (CA) involvement in the 2016 US Presidential election and the 2010 Trinidad and Tobago General election. It finds that data-driven voter targeting strategies developed by Cambridge Analytica from 2014-2015 are substantially more effective than previously employed strategies. Moreover, these strategies undermine rational choice and consequently impede a country's ability to conduct democratic politics.

Abstract:
The Cambridge Analytica–Facebook scandal led to widespread concern over the methods deployed by Cambridge Analytica to target voters through psychographic profiling algorithms, built upon Facebook user data. The scandal ultimately led to a record-breaking $5 billion penalty imposed upon Facebook by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in July 2019. The FTC action, however, has been criticized as failing to adequately address the privacy and other harms emanating from Facebook’s release of approximately 87 million Facebook users’ data, which was exploited without user authorization. This Essay summarizes the FTC’s response to the Cambridge Analytica–Facebook scandal. It concludes that the scandal focuses attention on the need to explore the potential for embedding due process-type inquiries and protections within the enforcement actions by regulatory agencies such as the FTC. These protections are increasingly important in addressing the problem of “black boxing the voter” that is now presented by data- and algorithmic-driven companies such as Cambridge Analytica and Facebook.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the ethics behind the actions of the 2016 Data Scandal on the example of 2 major sides, Facebook and Cambridge Analytica. Subsequent events such as bankruptcy of Cambridge Analytica and a significant drop in the stock prices of Facebook (a fall of 24%, equivalent to $134 billion.) were an integral part of this research paper to explore the role of the attitudes of the business entities over bankruptcy in these kinds of scandals. Thereby, a comparison technique has been employed to analyze the ethical dimension of the bankruptcy of Cambridge Analytica, and how the attitude of Facebook provided a chance of survival and recovery within this process. The outcome of the research clearly identifies that even in the corporative entities bypassing or violating the ethical standards can be observed. Albeit, there is a strong correlation between the degree of ethical standards and the sustainability of the businesses from the aspect of customers, partners, and the government. The article continued with the analysis of the significance of the immediate implementation of the ethical standards and deterrent defense with a manner of “bona fide” in these types of scandals to handle the crisis. The research concluded with an ethical analysis of data analysis and data mining from the Kantian definition of autonomy, Jurgen Habermas’s definition of privacy in the era of digitalization.

Abstract:
The claim of Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm, that it was possible to influence voting behavior by using data mined from the social platform Facebook created a sudden fear in its users of being manipulated; consequently, even the market price of the social platform was shocked. We propose a case study analyzing the effect of this data scandal not only on Facebook stock price, but also on the whole stock market. To such a scope, we consider 15-minutes prices and returns of the set of the NASDAQ-100 components before and after the Cambridge Analytica case. We analyze correlations and Mutual Information among components finding that assets become more correlated and their Mutual Information grows higher. We also observe that correlation and Mutual Information are mutually increasing and seem to follow a master curve. Hence, the market appears more fragile after the Cambridge Analytica event. In fact, as it is well-known in finance, an increase in the average value of correlations augments the systemic risk (i.e., all the market can collapse as a whole) and decreases the possibility of allocating a safe investment portfolio.

Abstract:
The Facebook - Cambridge Analytica scandal came to light in 2018 revealing the problematic surveillance practices, and violations of privacy the companies allowed. The EU has introduced a privacy legislation, GDPR, that came into effect in 2018 shortly after the scandal erupted. Privacy is a key problem with modern technologies, as companies are trying to gain all possible data on individuals. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the surveillance-privacy nexus in the EU. This thesis asked the research question of: How has surveillance, through emerging technologies, affected the EU's ability to protect the right to privacy? To analyse this research question, this thesis used case study and post-structuralist discourse analysis on the recordings of Alexander Nix, CEO of Cambridge Analytica, at a marking festival, and of Mark Zuckerberg at the European Parliament. To analyse the recordings, biopower and panopticon were used as core theoretical tools. Through utilization of the methods and the theoretical tools, the findings of this thesis point to the conclusion that the EU’s ability to protect privacy from surveillance practices was not affected by the modern surveillance technology, and therefore the protection against exploitation of privacy remains low.

Abstract:
In modern societies media have a central role as it is through the media that citizens in particular have access to information about their society. Information about society is crucial for citizens to be able to make thoughtful decisions in a democratic spirit. Political campaigns have started using personally targeted online advertising to reach new voters. This phenomenon is called “microtargeting” and the purpose is to identify individual voters that the parties are most likely to convince. Cambridge Analyticas operations, which are largely based on microtargeting, challenge democratic principles. This study purpose is divided in two parts. First is to map out and explain Cambridge Analyticas operations by analyzing from a democratic perspective. Second is to compile and systematize the proposed measures on democracy problems that are brought up in the debate about Cambridge Analytica. Idea analysis is the method of this paper, and it is of both descriptive and explanatory nature. It appears that Cambridge Analytica operations mainly undermines citizens' right to enlightened understanding and a free and factual debate. This undermines democratic principles in several ways. Furthermore, the studies show that the debate orbits around antitrust laws, how the legislation should formulate on how internet companies should handle personal information and what is the Internet companies own obligation in question. A smaller part of the debate also highlights the citizens' own capacity to be vigilant and critical of the Internet.

Abstract:

Gordon, Jesse. "When data crimes are real crimes: voter surveillance and the Cambridge Analytica conflict." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/11075.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis asks what conditions elevated the Cambridge Analytica (CA) conflict into a sustained and global political issue? Was this a privacy conflict and if so, how was it framed as such? This work demonstrates that the public outcry to CA formed out of three underlying structural conditions: The rise of the alt-right as an ideology, surveillance capitalism, and a growing and unregulated voter analytics industry. A network of actors seized the momentum of this conflict to drive the message that voter surveillance is a threat to democratic elections. These actors humanized the CA conflict and created a catalyst for a large scale public outrage to these previously ignored structures. Their focus on democratic threat also allowed this conflict to transcend the typical contours of a privacy conflict and demonstrate that the consequences of CA are societal, rather than personal. Despite the democratic threat of voter surveillance, Canada and the United States have yet to address the wider implications of voter surveillance adequately. Thus, how these systems are used will be a question of central importance in upcoming elections.

Abstract:
The 2016 United States Presidential Election will forever be tainted with Russia’s interference and Cambridge Analytica’s involvement. In this election, the idea that digital technology, social media, the internet and cyberspace would make the world a freer and more open world was challenged, since Russia and Cambridge Analytica harnessed these means to, through disinformation, harm one candidate’s chances and boost another’s, steering the electorate to vote based not on facts, but on made-up narratives. In this work, we will endeavour to show how the sovereign and authoritarian state of Russia, as well as the firm Cambridge Analytica, used freedom of expression and the free circulation of information, which democracies so dearly hold, to disseminate disinformation, in an attempt to manipulate the democratic choice of a new political leader, through digital technology. Taking into account that these manipulation efforts took place primarily in cyberspace, a domain ever more accessible and present in the lives of populations, in which technological evolution is extraordinarily fast, and that four years have passed since the election, we will also endeavour to make considerations about what will be possible to do in cyberspace in the future, what cybernetic capabilities will exist and what risks they will bear, as well as considerations on what role of cyberspace will be the as the fifth domain of conflict, alongside the domains of Land, Sea, Air and Space.

Abstract:
AbstractAt least since Quine (From a logical point of view. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1953) it has been suspected that a semantic theory that rests on defining features, or on what are taken to be “analytic” properties bearing on the content of lexical items, rests on a fault line. Simply put, there is no criterion for determining which features or propertiesFeatures are to be analytic and which ones are to be synthetic or contingent on experience. Deep down, our concern is what cognitive science and its several competing semantic theories have to offer in terms of solution. We analyze a few cases, which run into trouble by appealing to analyticity, and propose our own solution to this problem: a version of atomism cum inferences, which we think it is the only way out of the dead-end of analyticity. We start off by discussing several guiding assumptions regarding cognitive architecture and on what we take to be methodological imperatives for doing semantics within cognitive science—that is a semantics that is concerned with accounting for mental states. We then discuss theoretical perspectives on lexical causatives and the so-called “coercion” phenomenon or, in our preferred terminology, indeterminacy. And we advance, even if briefly, a proposal for the representation and processing of conceptual content that does away with the analytic/synthetic distinction. We argue that the only account of mental content that does away with the analytic/synthetic distinction is atomism. The version of atomism that we sketch accounts for the purported effects of analyticity with a system of inferences that are in essence synthetic and, thus, not content constitutive.

Abstract:
In today’s world, software is being used in every sector, be it education, healthcare, security, transportation, finance and so on. As software engineers are affecting society greatly, if they do not behave ethically, it could cause widespread damage, such as the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018. Therefore, investigating the ethics of software engineers and the relationships it has with other interpersonal variables such as work performance is important for understanding what could be done to improve the situation. Software engineers work in rapidly-changing business environments which lead to a lot of stress. Their emotions are important for dealing with this, and can impact their ethical decision-making. In this quantitative study, the researcher aims to investigate whether Emotional Intelligence (EQ) moderates the relationship between work ethics of software engineers and their work performance using hierarchical multiple regression analysis in SPSS. The findings have found that EQ does significantly moderate the relationship between work ethics and work performance. These findings provide valuable information for improving the ethical behaviour of software engineers.

After the manipulation made by Cambridge Analytica which was based on classifying users by their political views and targeting specific political propaganda on the Brexit campaign, the Trump election and the Bolsonaro election, there is no doubt this issue can have a real impact on society in ‘normal times’. During a pandemic, any type of fake news can be the difference between life and death when the data shared can directly hurt the people who are believing in it. Moreover, there is also a new trend of using artificial robots to disseminate such news with a special target on Twitter which can be linked with political campaigns. Thus, it is essential that we identify and understand what kind of news is selected to be 'dressed' as fake and how it is disseminated. This paper aims to investigate the dissemination of fake news related with Covid-19 in the UK and Brazil in order to understand the impact of fake news on public sector actions, social isolation and quarantine imposition. Those two case studies are well versed on the fake news dissemination. Our initial dataset of Twitter posts have focused on posts from four different cities (Natal, São Paulo, Sheffield and London) and have shown interesting pointers that will be discussed.
