The article examines the cultural importance of the ‘Cambridge spies’, the infamous traitors who betrayed British secrets to the Soviets over a period of several decades. In particular, it looks at the various ‘screen fictions’ which have drew inspiration from the well-known tale of treachery, and argues the centrality of the Cambridge spies as a Cold War narrative in British culture in the second part of the twentieth century. Aspects of the story has figured in such screen dramas as Traitor (1971), Philby, Burgess and Maclean (1977), Another Country (1984), and The Cambridge Spies (2003), wh

AbstractThis article explores Alan Bennett’s Single Spies (1988), an espionage double bill comprising “An Englishman Abroad” and “A Question of Attribution,” proposing that the personalizing of social, political, and historical themes, as well as the astute documentation of a decaying Englishness and its class system in both plays, are representative of the work of a playwright whose output deserves serious critical attention. The study focuses on how Bennett historicizes the actions of his infamous protagonists (Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt) while challenging assumptions regarding patriotism

The Cambridge spy ring has been the subject of many dramatic representations on British television. While prior scholarship has largely focused on plays by Dennis Potter and Alan Bennett depicting the later lives of such figures, this article examines an alternative tradition: representations which re-enact events at the height of their careers in the early Cold War. I focus on two productions which centre specifically on events surrounding the 1951 defection of Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean, but from hugely contrasting perspectives. This paper aims at analyzing the use of scientific electronic papers and journals in the didactics material of the specialization Course on Educational Technologies from UFSCar. The bibliographical analysis focused on the development and legitimacy of scientific journals. The purpose of the documental analysis on the didactic material, composed by 48 volumes, was to verify the kinds of material cited and suggested in the multimedia study guides. The data show that books are the most cited material, whereas other electronic materials are the most suggested kind of complementary material. The in

Abstract Scelidosaurus fossils were first discovered during the commercial quarrying of the Liassic sea-cliffs between Charmouth and Lyme Regis in Dorset during the late 1850s. The original specimens included a well-preserved skull embedded in a block of argillaceous limestone (marlstone). Shortly after this skull was retrieved, a series of more-or-less contiguous marlstone slabs were recovered, containing most of the skeleton of the same animal (NHMUK R1111). After rudimentary (hammer and chisel) mechanical preparation, Owen published descriptions of this material (Owen, 1861, 1863). These tw

In early 1888, Miss Margaret Pearson arrived in Melbourne under engagement to the Working Men’s College there to give cookery lessons to young women. The College committee had applied to the National School of Cookery in London—an establishment effusively praised in the colonial press—for a suitable culinary educator, and Pearson, a graduate of that institute, was dispatched. After six months or so spent educating her antipodean pupils she published a cookbook, Cookery Recipes For The People, which she described in the preface as a handbook of “plain wholesome cookery” (Pearson 3).
