Full textPrevious studies on upper oceanic crust have been limited to young lithosphere and wide-angle seismic data, which lacks resolution in the upper crust. The oceanic lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) has been studied extensively by seismological studies, but also suffers from low vertical resolution. The TransAtlantic ILAB experiment collected multi-channel seismic reflection data over oceanic lithosphere aged 0-75 Ma formed at the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean. Analysis of upper crust by means of seismic imaging and high-resolution tomography indicates the top of the crust (Layer 2A) is never sealed from 0-75 Ma and hydrothermal systems continue in older oceanic crust. Most of the evolution happens within the first 4 Myr, beyond which intensity of hydrothermal circulation reduces and sediment cover increases. Layer 2A/2B boundary is a lava/dyke contact at the ridge-axis and a hydrothermal alteration front away from the ridge-axis. Co-located heatflow data from the LITHOS experiment supports the possibility of large hydrothermal cells in older oceanic crust. The LAB is imaged throughout on lithosphere aged 2-75 Ma. From 2-47 Ma, there is evidence of a LAB channel decoupling the lithospheric mantle from the asthenospheric mantle with the lithosphere being 25 km thick at 2 Myr and 72 km thick at 47 Myr. However from 49-75 Myr, a single LAB reflection is imaged implying possible disruption of the base of the channel due to adjacent Cameroon Volcanic Line. Strong evidence of mantle thermal anomaly comes from the LAB being shallower and an uplifted lithosphere

Full textThe forests of the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) belong to the guineo-congolese biodiversity hotspot and have been identified as one of the principal priority zones for conservation in the world. The topographical complexity of this region, quite unusual in the African humid-forest zone, has led also to climatic and edaphic diversity. Existing data demonstrate the region’s high levels of diversity and endemism for several relatively well-known groups. Patterns of differentiation across multiple lineages in the Cameroon volcanic line (CVL) should allow us to identify the main events that have structured biological diversity in the history of afro-tropical forests. We focus our study on rodents. This group represent the most specious of mammals and is particularly diversified in the CVL (with several endemic species). Moreover, rodents are known to be good biological models for phylogeographical studies. The genera Lamottemys, Praomys, Hybomys, Hylomyscus and Lophuromys were retained for this PhD thesis. We combined morphological and molecular approaches to assess the taxonomical validity of several species previously identified as endemic to the CVL and to infer their phylogenetic affinities. Moreover, we performed detailed phylogeographical studies on four species (P. Jacksoni, P. Misonnei, L. Eisentrauti, H. Rufocanus) to propose a model of structuration of the CVL biodiversity. We confirm the taxonomical validity of 5 of the 9 tested species (Lamottemys okuensis, Praomys hartwigi, Praomys morio, Hybomys rufocanus and Lophuromys eisentrauti). H. Eisentrauti. H. Badius and L. Roseveari should be considered as geographical forms within the species H. Rufocanus and L. Eisentrauti, respectively. Additional analyses on P. Obscurus should be carried out to confirm its status. CVL endemism mainly concerns submontane and afromontane species. The high rodent biodiversity in this region is maintained by the high diversity of habitats. Several historical factors explain the rodent diversification in this region: the volcano-tectonic activities, the climatic fluctuations of the Pleistocene and the presence of several rivers acting as geographical barriers to gene flow. At the beginning of the Pliocene, strong volcanic activities occurred in eastern Africa (Rift system) and in the CVL, which could have played a major role in favouring speciation events. Several divergent events dated from the Pleistocene were recorded in the CVL. It is likely that periodic climatic fluctuation in the region during the Pleistocene has been marked by the alternate expansion and contraction of montane and lowland-forest biotas. Individual species may have been restricted to refugia (whose location, number and size depended on the ecological tolerance of the species in question), leading to allopatric diversification of rodents. Finally we discuss the role of the Sanaga, Ogooue and Ivindo rivers in promoting or maintaining the diversification of rodents in West Central Africa. Two geographical sub-regions can be distinguished in the CVL: one grouping all the mountains from Bioko to mount Lefo, and another one grouping all the mountains from mount Oku to Tchabal Mbabo. According to our data, it seems likely that the CVL has constituted only recently a barrier preventing East-West exchange of lowland faunas

Full textCryptococcal meningitis (CM), caused by an encapsulated yeast is a leading cause of AIDS related opportunistic infection in adults in sub-Saharan Africa and a major driver of mortality, second to tuberculosis. We aimed at optimising the management of AIDS-related cryptococcal meningitis in Cameroon through interventional studies. As such, we designed and performed three studies on the role of cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) in CM diagnosis, contributed in a major phase III non-inferiority clinical trial for inductive treatment of CM in the African setting and analysed the trial participants’ tolerability of the antifungals used in the trial. We also contributed in a review on the long-term prognosis of CM and finally in an advocacy paper for CM to be recognised as a neglected tropical disease. In Cameroon, serum CrAg detection, a major risk factor for incident CM in AIDS patient is prevalent in 7.5% of patients initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART) at less than 100 CD4 cells/μL, of whom 45% have cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) evidence of asymptomatic CM. The new Biosynex CryptoPS test for CrAg detection is comparable to the IMMY lateral flow assay test and shows promise for correctly classifying patients with high serum CrAg titre, a predictor of confirmed CM. Post CrAg screening, enhanced adherence to ART and to fluconazole-based pre-emptive therapy to CrAg positive patients who present with no CM is effective in preventing incident CM within the first year of ART. In HIV patients presenting with symptoms of central nervous system disease, compared to Indian ink staining and/or culture of CSF, serum CrAg detection is highly presumptive of CM and CSF CrAg detection is diagnostic of first episode of CM. In African patients with confirmed CM, inductive therapy based on oral fluconazole-flucytosine combination or seven-day amphotericin B-flucytosine combination are as effective and more tolerated than standard fourteen-day amphotericin B-flucytosine combination. In spite advances in HIV care, mortality due to CM remains unacceptably high warranting CM to be recognised as a neglected tropical disease for which targeted resources need to be allocated to reduce HIV-related mortality. Overall, in Cameroon, putting in place of local pragmatic algorithms based on the availability of simple but highly performant diagnostic tools and sustainable recommended treatment are indispensable to decrease AIDS-associated CM-related morbidity and mortality

Full textThe occurrence of a motor disability is a major event that is not limited to corporal dimensions, but also involves social dimensions. Individuals are faced with biographical disruptions characterized by breaches and bifurcations in their lifetrajectories and by the loss of place and role in social life. The occurrence of disability calls for a reorganization of living conditions and of the day-to-day life when returning to their usual environment after a stay in a rehabilitation centre. Experiencing motor disability thus makes it possible to grasp the social dynamics of life trajectories and the resources solicited by persons with motor disability in the process of their social reconstruction.Based on interviews conducted with men and women with motor disabilities and living at home in Yaoundé (Cameroon), this thesis aims at analysing the interactions between motor disability and social environment in the reorganization of their life trajectories and in their different activities following the onset of disability. By adopting a social model of the handicap, it highlights the biographical disruptions and the resources needed in the different trajectories to maintain and adapt their identity. It allows a situated analysis of the mechanisms of production of disability from the experience of individuals

Full textThe relations, as conceived of by the Masa, between the reproduction of sorghum and that of humans is the main of focus of this thesis. From 2009 to 2010, twenty-two months of ethnographic fieldwork was carried out in several villages of Far-North Cameroon, mainly in Nuldayna, in order to document the technical, cognitive, social and ritual processes by which farmers maintain and reproduce, both on a yearly basis and from generation to generation, a wide array of sorghum landraces. Sorghum is a keystone of the Masa material and social life. It is by far the main crop, the main staple, a widely used ritual ingredient and, through its transmission across generations, a symbol of social identity and of the patrilineage’s continuity. However, after a man’s death, his sorghum seeds become sterile. Their fertility may only be regained by triggering a ritual circuit involving the kinship relationships that had enabled the deceased to marry. The analysis of this ritual, as well as those related to funerals and inheritance, shows that the sorghum’s reproductive capabilities are dependent on those of its owner. While individuals’ procreative powers are held to be a necessary condition for perpetuating the patrilineage both materially and socially, these powers cannot be transmitted in the male line without involving the horizontal relations of affinity. Moreover, the systematic analyses of agricultural practices, of ethnobotanical knowledge regarding sorghum diversity and of seed exchange networks, reveals that affinity is also essential for the inter-annual reproduction and maintenance of sorghum, including those seeds that are proudly presented as ‘the seeds of our fathers.’ More generally, this work attempts to demonstrate that, using mixed qualitative and quantitative methods, the study of crops and of the indigenous conceptions related to their reproduction can provide important insights into the study of human societies

Full textPolitical speech is the main tool used in order to wield power in Cameroon, a country which is being run by Paul Biya for the past 35 years. The various stands taken by this political figure is revealed through these speeches which inform on the argumentative background and inner thoughts of this politician. The doctorate thesis which studies the relationship between power and the argumentative strategies in Paul Biya speeches in the multiparty era in Cameroon therefore sets out to throw more light on this peculiar situation. This research work is discussed from the vantage point of discourse analysis, more specifically on rhetoric argumentation. Using integrative and analytical approaches to discourse analysis, the work draws its key concepts mainly from language sciences. The textometric analysis of the corpus is carried out using the Hyperbase Statistics Analysis software. Also, the analysis of the corpus has brought us to coin new terms in order to address the specificities of Paul Biya speehes. The findings reveal that in his speeches, Paul Biya makes use of a set-up which is grounded on logico-affective arguments anchored in the social reality as well as in the practices of the various traditional powers in Cameroon. The analysis also brings to the fore the various persuasive strategies and the evolution of the sociopolitical life in Cameroon. This research work also reveals how Paul Biya incarnates a strong, sacred and mythified power which gives him the privilege of having an exclusive aura at the national level which can appease the Cameroonian people and nip in the bud all the initiatives of his rivals. He has therefore succeeded in establishing a political regime which takes advantage of disharmony in order to perpetuate his power

Full textInformation and Communication Technologies are now part of the life of many institutions of higher education, secondary education and even primary education. The benefits for these institutions, as well as for teachers and learners are established. However, there are very few cases of experiments carried out in learning Institutions with positive results. This thesis is about integrating ICTs into a French course in the Anglo-Saxon university of Buea in Cameroon. The context in which the course is taught in classrooms makes it difficult for the objectives to be met. Because of the large class size, the little time allocated to the course and the heterogeneous nature of students’ language levels, speaking, writing and interactional skills are not worked out in class. This action research thesis sets out to propose a blended learning set-up that hinges around the university IT Centre. Online classes are articulated with classroom sessions. Thus, students have the opportunity to involve in small groups, in communicative activities and in quasi synchronous mode. These communication modality, very often less studied by CMC researchers, is an efficient alternative to synchronous communication and environments that are very much reliable as far as internet quality is concerned in that part of the world. The general question that has driven the research is: How can a technology instrumented approach help in overcoming difficulties and ease learning? To answer that question, two technology based experiences were carried out. They were guided by a research protocol. Data collected enable me to analyse interactions and determine traces of language acquisition. From the circumstances surrounding the experiments, it is discovered that there are a number of obstacles to the integration of ICT in “low tech context” like that which is studied. The technology-based stet-up pattern is then questioned. This research work goes further to propose mobile learning as an alternative to the ICT integration model that concentrates all the resources in a single location

Full textAlthough mining is useful because it generates revenues, it also raises difficulties because it undermines some legally protected interests. This is why it is criticized for its many negative externalities that hurt some fundamental rights, as the right to health, and finally, the right to life. The question is whether to give it up or whether to maintain it. The solution seems to be maintenance, but for that, it must be reconciled with environmental and social considerations. The research question is how to organize a mining operation that ensures the preservation of the right to health and the right to life ? To organize the conciliation between these imperatives is the object of this thesis. It is justified not only by the usefulness of mining, but also by the interests attached to the protection of fundamental rights.Faced with this difficulty, the Cameroonian legislator has taken some important, but insufficient measures that need to be completed. The analysis reveals that the regulations do not give the necessary guarantees of a legal security that would integrate both the preservation of the general interest and the private interests of mining operators, and the fundamental rights of the citizens. These legal uncertainties call for further reflection so that the technical, scientific, health and environmental uncertainties raised by mining should fully be taken into account. This is the reason why several proposals have been made to optimize this conciliation. To this end, sustainable development appears as the martingale of the reconciliation of diverging interests.Conciliation involves the avoidance of damages on the one hand and the curative treatment of the negatives effects of mining on health and life on the other. Although the field of experimentation of research is Cameroon, the analysis remains mobilizable in others contexts

Full textThis study offers a fine-grained analysis of James Cameron’s film, Avatar (2009), on several theoretical fronts to provide a view of the film from a cognitive cultural studies perspective. The insights gained from cognitive theory are used to situate the debate by indicating the value cognitive theories have in cultural criticism. The critical discourse analysis of Avatar that results is a vehicle for the central concern of this study, which is to understand the diverse, often contradictory, meaning-making exhibited by Avatar audiences. A focus on the construction of empathic responses to the film’s messages investigates the success of this polysemy. Ihe central propositions of the study are that meanings and interpretations of the experience of viewing Avatar are made discursively; they are situated in definable traditions, mores and values; and this meaning-making takes place in a cognitive framework which allows for the technical reproduction and reception of the experience while providing powerful, emerging and cognitively plausible narratives. In an attempt to situate the film’s commercial success and its plethora of awards, including an Oscar for best art direction, the analysis takes a critical view of Cameron’s use of cultural stereotypes and the framing of the exotic other, and considers the continuing development of these elements over the whole series and product line or, as Henry Jenkins (2007) defines it, “transmedia”. In drawing the theoretical boundaries of the methodologies used in this study and in arguing for their complementarities, the study contributes to a renewal of Raymond Williams’ (1961) mostly forgotten claim of the cross-disciplinary cognitive dimension of cultural studies and demonstrates an affirmation of this formulation as cognitive cultural studies.
