Abstract:
AbstractThis case study of youth cultural production in Cameroon examines how lycée students introduce idioms of tradition and the ancestral past into the lycée context by creating a club modelled on a dance society popular in the region. In pre-colonial rural Tupuriland, the gurna society was a key site for the moral–sexual socialisation of youth and a cultural–political arena where competition was staged between individuals and villages during death celebrations. Today, the gurna remains popular in Tupuri villages, though it has been recreated in urban contexts and modern institutions where

This study investigated the effect of religious education on human development in Cameroon. The data were analysed quantitatively using regression analysis, specifically employing the Tobit model due to the censored nature of the dependent variable, which had limits on its range. The findings revealed that religious education significantly enhances moral reasoning, civic engagement, and resilience among youth. However, the systemic marginalisation of religious knowledge within formal education limits its potential benefits. These findings highlight the complex interplay between religious educa

After the reunification of Cameroon in 1961, some West Cameroonian political class began to cast their doubts on the centralized Federal System put in place. This system according to some Anglophones gave room for marginalization and assimilation of West Cameroon especially with the closure of its development agency. This somehow nursed grievances and in 2016, the bon a fide English Speaking Cameroonian lawyers and teachers rose up in a “peaceful civil disobedient protest” to express their disillusion, over the erosion of the Common Law Judicial System and the Anglo-Saxon Education System in C

Abstract Since independence, the “Anglophone” and “Francophone” identities (both legacies of British and French colonialism, respectively) have remained the dominant national identity of Cameroonians. This linguistic national identity was formalized by the adoption of bilingualism at the dawn of independence and the enactment of English and French as the two official languages of the country. Nationalism and national integration in the Cameroonian context therefore revolve around the cohabitation of the aforementioned distinct linguistic and cultural identities, which harbors significant incom

This paper seeks to evaluate the impacts of the uneven development of transport infrastructure in former British Southern Cameroons and French Cameroun on the political evolution of both entities. It investigates the rationale behind the introduction of modern transport and communication systems in Cameroon by various colonial administrations, and the spatial differences of the infrastructure development, so as to ascertain the role of the imperialists in creating the transport problem plaguing the country. Exploring primary and secondary historical sources, this write-up argues that the desir

Abstract Cameroon’s violent history had an impact on its neighbors just as those neighbors had a generally overlooked impact on Cameroon. Contagion via transnational networks and their dynamics is highly relevant. This contribution also looks into the sub-regional status of dysfunctional institutions, the absence of checks and balances in overly presidential, personalised and undemocratic political systems. Autocratic regimes and coup-makers clearly learned from each other. In fact, the wave of democratization of the 1990s all over the continent did not produce tangible results in Central Afri
