Full textThe aim of this thesis is to build-up the history of post-neolithic peopling of the Diamare based uniquely on archaeological facts and to compare the results obtained with the ethnohistoric results. To do this it was necessary to complete the chrono-cultural sequence already etablished ; that is to say, by collecting information concerning the first and last centuries of our era. Thus the study concentrates on artefacts - particuraly on ceramic material - excavated from nine sites : seven tells and two lithics workshops. Once the context and methods used are explained (vol. I) we have described each site along with the material wich it is associated (vol. 2). This database enables use to recognise different ceramic associations (called "ceramic units") representing for each probing, a specific occupation. These "ceramic units" were then regrouped into "ceramic traditions" (vol. 3). These "ceramic traditions" once described (spatial and chronological distribution and ceramic characterics. . . ) allow an historical division of the diamare history into five periods, each of which are then described. The archaeological and ethnographical evidence available allow us to tentatively deduce the migratory patterns and or the most probable axes of diffusion. These elements therefore provide a base for an experiment in the history of population where the principle lines can be compared with the ethnohistographic facts. Full textThe history of iron technology has contributed to the knowledge of technical, economic and sociocultural activities in many ancient societies in the world. Indeed, the study of iron in south-Cameroon is intended to increase our knowledge on the ancient history of this part of the country which an be considered as unknowm. This thesis shows that iron technology appeared in south-caleroon almost three thousand years ago, at the beginning of the first millenium bc. The appearance of iron production in this region can be considered as an indigenous feata of civilization initiated by proto-bantu populations, not as a consequence of borrowing. The main data from archaelogical research at Oliga, Obobogo, Nkometou, have brought a new light on the chronology of iron age in this region, from the end of the second millenium bc. This technology have been facilitated by the aboundance of raw materials such as ore and wood in fact, iron in south-Cameroon ancient societies has been and indigenous feata of local populations in their effort to adapt to the environment and to build and important civilization in agricultural production, and n many socio-cultural exchanges

Full textThis dissertation is devoted to an historical study of ancient societies in precolonial Gabon and surrounding places, mainly on the coastal line extending from mount cameroon and southward to Congo river estuary, till early 17th century, at a time of forming trade system between African coastal societies and european nations. Multiplicated during last decades, archeological data showed that first hunters-gatherers societies had been taken over by true agriculturing or gardening peoples (perhaps the first bantu speakers in the region) in the whole area, during a long transitional period, along the lsa (late stone age). Traces of iron smelting is dated of last millenium bc. This technology seems to have beeen diffused from north (and maybe east) to south, along hilltops more probably than valleys and seaside. When discovering the coast, portuguese captains (among whom pacheco pereiera, our first written record) found very different peoples living on each part of the equator: on the north, naked populations vith a segmentary organisation; on the south, around Congo river bassin, kingdoms where clothing was of paramount social and political importance. European presence along the coast as well as colonisation of sao tome island generated a partial christianisation of various african peoples and material changes such as introducing new crops, mainly cassava. Due to Congo kingdom expansion, complex ethnic migrations occured from the interior on, and back from a very disputed littoral. More precisely, studying this general movement led to a new and accurate defining for historical importance of such peoples as former bramas, ambous and anzicos, or modern mpongwe and myene, duala, ngola and bakuba
