Abstract:

Abstract:
A two‑month f ield experiment to study host preference of the leaf‑eating caterpillar, Parasa lepida cramer, on 5 cultivars of hybrid coconut: Green Khina‑1, Brown Khina‑1, Nias Yellow Dwarf (NYD) x West African Tall (WAT),. Malayan Red Dwarf (MRD) x WAT, and Camerun Red Dwarf (CRD x Rennel Tall (RLT), aged 2.5 years, was carried out in swampy area of South Sumatra province, in 1991. A number of 30 palms, taken at random, from each block of the above mentioned hybrids were studied. Hence, there were 1SO trees observed altogether. The population of larvae per leaf as well as their dwellings in the fronds were recorded to investigate age of leaf consumed. Results of the study showed that none of the hybrids were resistant to P. lepida larvae. Cultivar of NYD x WAT was attacked more followed by Green Khina‑1, NYD x WAT, CRD x RLT, and Brown Khina ‑ 1. Leaves of half matures of all hybrids were preferred compared to those of the others.

Abstract:
Argaleostatus Gibson, 1995 is synonymized under Lutnes Cameron, 1884 (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Eupelmidae: Eupelminae) n. syn. and its type species, Eupelmus testaceus Cameron, 1884, is transferred to Lutnes as L. testaceus (Cameron) n. comb. The species of Lutnes are revised and six species are recognized, including the type species, Lutnes ornaticornis Cameron, 1884, plus L. testaceus, L. biguttatus (Girault, 1913), and three new species, L. aurantimacula Gibson n. sp. (Ecuador), L. infucatus Gibson n. sp. (Ecuador), and L. afrotropicus Gibson n. sp. (Cameroon). The first five species are based on females from the Neotropical region, whereas the last species is based on a female from Cameroon. This Afrotropical record is the first for the genus outside of the Neotropical region. Males are unrecognized for the genus. Monophyly and relationships of the genus are discussed and the species are keyed and illustrated through macrophotography.

Abstract:
The object of my dissertation is the commercial video production that has developed in Douala, Cameroon, since the liberalization of the audiovisual sector in 2000 and the diffusion of low-cost and easy-to-use digital technology among the intermediate urban social stratum. Videos are conceived as artwork that expresses social experiences, representing symbolic platforms which trigger and produce change and critically question the world. By investigating the production process, videos are not only analyzed as texts but also as experiences. Against the backdrop of the deep changes that have recently revolutionized the African mediascape, I illustrate the transformations of video production in Douala from the beginning of the 2000s until present. The conclusion focusses on reception practices, highlighting how these reinsert stories into the flux of life, supplying material that can eventually inspire the production of new videos. At the same time, I explore video production as an urban practice that instills sensations and meanings into the urban space. I retrace tyhe social origin of plots and characters, as well as the wys work within the audiovisual sector is organized locally with the aim to grasp the multiple relations between fiction and reality, artists and the rest of society

Abstract:

Abstract:

Hence, the purpose of this research is to analyze the reading practices in the classrooms of the 3rd year of Spanish in high school. For this purpose, we have used two instruments: the questionnaire and the observation with its respective guide. The results have indicated that the factors that hinder the learning of the reading comprehension have more weight than those that facilitate it. These difficulties refer, on the one hand, to the official program, the school textbooks and on the other, the teachers. Faced with these limitations, a globalizing proposal is recommended: in the political sphere and in the field of the classroom and the families.

Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to propose a teaching resource for learning Spanish as a foreign language in the interactionist way. It is intended for a schooled context in which the structural program of teaching a foreign language is well established. With the interactionist model of learning, language serves as an instrument to interact socially with certain discursive capacity in exchanges of ideas and to collectively build learning and communicative strategies. In order to find the factors for effective language acquisition in the inner world of the students, this investigation carried out an analysis of the needs of students. The result revealed that, the learning experiences and collaborative strategies in language classes prevail over the accumulation of knowledge. In view of these premises, it is proved that success in teaching is obtained when the volitional resources of students are at the forefront of the process. Therefore, this study designed teaching materials focused on learning the target language in communicative interaction and, based on the motivations of each learner. This involves the flexible nature of the proposed materials and adaptability to the wide variety of learning situations. In the same way, the effective implementation of learning strategies is emphasized, in order to increase the efficiency and performances of a spanish language learner.

There are lots of different elements that take part in the teaching/learning process in a foreign language. In this thesis the effect that the language previously learned by the pupil has in the mentioned process and the beliefs that are embraced about the linguistic are analyzed. The lack of world recognition of the African languages has taken us to the approach of how it would be the teaching-learning process of the Spanish for African native students in general, and Cameroon natives, (specially, the medùmba speakers), proper of a territory in which an European language (the French language) was implemented by a settling process. In order to do that, the phonetic - phonological and grammatical systems of the medùmba, the French and the Spanish are contrasted in the search of the potential obstacles, faced by the French-speaking student of medùmba mother language who is learning ELE. Additionally, the imaginary social is identified about the autochthonous and foreign languages statute among the teaching and students body in the Cameroon’s secondary centers, as well as the beliefs of the same groups, concerning ELE’s teaching - learning. Finally, on the one hand, the degree of proximity is verified among the social, linguistic and educational reality, and, on the other one, the beliefs on the languages and on the teaching / learning of Spanish.

Abstract:
AbstractSince the advent of smartphones, photography is increasingly being done with small, portable, multi-function devices. Relative to the purpose-built cameras that dominated previous eras, smartphone cameras must overcome challenges related to their small form factor. Smartphone cameras have small apertures that produce a wide depth of field, small sensors with rolling shutters that lead to motion artifacts, and small form factors which lead to more camera shake during exposure. Along with these challenges, smartphone cameras have the advantage of tight integration with additional sensors and the availability of significant computational resources. For these reasons, the field of computational imaging has advanced significantly in recent years, with academic groups and researchers from smartphone manufacturers helping these devices become more capable replacements for purpose-built cameras.

AbstractWithin Vision Zero as a strategy, it is imbedded the fact that injuries occur when the mechanical energy reaches individuals at rates that entail forces in excess of their thresholds for injury. Therefore, according to Vision Zero, there are three main strategies to eliminate fatalities and severe injuries due to road crashes: protect people from exposure of harmful energy, reduce the risk of events with harmful energy, and protect people from harmful energy in the event of a collision. Controlling speed is therefore of the task of utmost importance in a strategy such as Vision Zero.A traffic enforcement camera, or “speed camera,” system has the possibility to control speed in a road system, and it has the possibility to affect its road users both at a macro and a micro perspective. In a micro perspective, it primarily concerns how effective the cameras are locally at the road sections where the enforcement is focused on, while at a macro perspective it is more focused on how the camera enforcement system and strategies, possibly together with the overall enforcement strategy, affects attitudes and norms related to driving with excessive speed. Experience worldwide has proven the effectiveness of automated speed cameras in reducing speed and, in turn, crashes and injuries. In this chapter, firstly the rationale behind speed limits, speed management, and speed compliance strategies will be explored and analyzed, in particular from a Vision Zero perspective. Secondly, various different approaches to speed camera systems in Europe, in Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and France, will be analyzed and further explored. Finally, based on similarities and differences in approaches in these countries, in the last section some aspects concerning the setting of speed limits, speed management strategies that underpin the choice of camera technology, and modus of operandi, safety effects of and attitudes toward cameras, will be explored and discussed.

AbstractOptical quality control of MEMS and microsystems is challenging as these structures are micro-scale and three dimensional. Here we lay out different optical systems that can be used for 3D optical quality control in general and for such structures in particular. We further investigate one of these technologies – plenoptic cameras and characterize them for the described task, showing advantages and disadvantages. Key advantages are a huge increase in depth of field compared to conventional microscope camera systems allowing for fast acquisition of non-flat systems and secondly the resulting total focus images and depth maps. Finally we conclude that these advantages render plenoptic cameras a valuable technology for the application of quality control.

Abstract:
Abstract Most surveillance camera systems are still controlled and monitored by humans. Smart surveillance camera systems are proposed to automatically understand the scene captured, identify the objects of interest, detect the abnormality, etc. However, most surveillance cameras are either wide-angle or pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ). When the cameras are in the wide-view mode, small objects can be hard to be recognized. On the other hand, when the cameras are zoomed-in to the object of interest, the global view cannot be covered and important events outside the zoomed view will be missed. In this paper, we proposed a system composed of a wide-angle camera and a PTZ camera. The system is able to capture the wide-view and the zoomed-view at the same time, taking the advantages from both views. A real-time human detection and identification algorithm based on a neural network is developed. The system can efficiently and effectively recognize humans, distinguish different identities, and follow the person of interest using the PTZ camera. A multi-target multi-camera (MTMC) system is developed based on the original system. In the MTMC system, multiple cameras are placed at different places to look at different views. The same person shown in any camera can be recognized as the same person while different persons can be distinguished among all the cameras.

Abstract:
Abstract Optical motion capturing explains the three-Dimensional (3D) position estimation of points through triangulation employing several depth cameras. Prosperous performance relies on level of visibility of points from different cameras and the overlap of captured meshes in-between. Generally, the accuracy of the estimation is practically based on the camera parameters e.g., location and orientations. Accordingly, the camera network configurations play a key role in the quality of the estimated mesh. This paper proposes an optimal approach for camera placement based on characteristics of a depth camera D435i - Intel RealSense. The optimal problem includes a cost function that contains several minimisation and maximisation terms. The minimisation terms are distance of the cameras to the center of the scanning object, resolution error, and sparsity. And the maximisation terms are distance between each two pair of cameras, percent of captured point from an object, and the level of overlap between cameras. The object is designed based on practical experiments of human walking and is a bounding box around one step of dynamic foot work-space from heel strike posture to toe-off posture. The accuracy and robustness of the algorithms are assessed via experiment measurement, and sensitivity to the number of cameras is investigated. Accordingly, the experiment results determined that the scanning accuracy can be as high as 2.5 % based on a reference scan with a high-end scanner (Artec Eva).

Abstract:
Visual analytics applications often rely on target tracking across a network of cameras for inference and prediction. A network of cameras generates immense amount of video data and processing it for tracking a target is highly computationally expensive. Related works typically use data association and visual re-identification techniques to match target templates across multiple cameras. In this thesis, I propose to formulate this scheduling problem as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and present a reinforcement learning based solution to schedule cameras by selecting one where the target is most likely to appear next. The proposed approach can be learned directly from data and doesn't require any information of the camera network topology. NLPR MCT and DukeMTMC datasets are used to show that the proposed policy significantly reduces the number of frames to be processed for tracking and identifies the camera schedule with high accuracy as compared to the related approaches. Finally, I will be formulating an end-to-end pipeline for target tracking that will learn a policy to find the camera schedule and to track the target in the individual camera frames of the schedule.

Abstract:
Flux distributions from solar field collectors are typically evaluated using a beam characterization system, which consists of a digital camera with neutral density filters, flux gauge or calorimeter, and water-cooled Lambertian target panel. The pixels in camera image of the flux distribution are scaled by the flux peak value measured with the flux gauge or the total power value measured with the calorimeter. An alternative method, called PHLUX developed at Sandia National Laboratories, can serve the same purpose using a digital camera but without auxiliary instrumentation. The only additional information required besides the digital images recorded from the camera are the direct normal irradiance, an image of the sun using the same camera, and the reflectivity of the receiver or target panel surface. The PHLUX method was evaluated using two digital cameras (Nikon D90 and D3300) at different flux levels on a target panel. The performances of the two cameras were compared to each other and to measurements from a Kendall radiometer. For consistency in comparison of the two cameras, the same focal length lenses and same number of neutral density filters were used. Other camera settings (e.g., shutter speed, f-stop, etc.) were set based on the aperture size and performance of the cameras. The Nikon D3300 has twice the number of pixels as the D90. D3300 provided higher resolution, however, due to the smaller pixel sizes the images were noisier, and the D90 with larger pixels had better response to low light levels. The noise in the D3300, if not corrected, could result in gross overestimation of the irradiance calculations. After corrections to the D3300 flux images, the PHLUX results from the two cameras showed they agreed to within 8% for a peak flux level of 1000 suns on the target, and less than 10% error in the peak flux when compared to the Kendall radiometer.

This work aims to present an autonomous vehicle navigation system, based on an End-to-End Deep Learning approach, and to study the impact of different image input configurations to the system performance. The proposed methodology in this work was to adoptand test different configurations of RGB and Depth images captured from a Kinect device. We adopted a multi-camera system, composed by 3 cameras, with different RGB and/or Depth input configurations. Two main systems were developed in order to study and validade de different input configurations: the first one based on a realistic simulator and the second one based on a mini-car (small scale vehicle). Starting with the simulations, it was possible to choose the best camera/input configuration, then we validated that using the real vehicle (mini-car) with real sensors/cameras. The experimental results demonstrated that a multi-camera solution, based on 3 cameras, allow us to obtain better autonomous navigation control results in a End-to-End Deep Learning based approch, with a very small final error when using the proposed camera configurations.

Abstract:
Shading control strategies are nowadays employed in office environments to improve the visual comfort of the user. These strategies are often solely illuminance-based whereas comfort metrics as the Daylight Glare Probability (DGP) also need luminance values. In previous studies, daylight glare has been assessed by calculating the DGP from luminance maps obtained via a luminance camera or from a High Dynamic Range (HDR) image obtained with a commercially available camera. These detectors are traditionally mounted close to the user and aligned with the viewing direction. In real office environments, this camera position is impractical, and simulations based on machine learning techniques have shown a relation between the DGP from an observer's viewpoint and the DGP calculated from a ceiling camera. This paper experimentally validates this method in a real office environment by using two different cameras and two different illuminance sensors, i.e., a low-cost illuminance sensor and a calibrated sensor. Both cameras render similar results, although one camera overestimates the DGP. Moreover, the shortcomings of the simulation results are pinpointed and the obstacles for a realistic application are addressed. Furthermore, it was found that when moving the cameras to different positions, the sun position was shown to be an informative additional input for correlating the two DGP values. In future work, additional data will be analysed to determine the performance in other weather conditions and window orientations.

Abstract:
The northeastern Cameron Hills comprise a Cretaceous bedrock upland, rising >550 m above the regional boreal plains. It was inundated by the Laurentide Ice Sheet and includes much of a prominent 60 by 20 km southwest-oriented mega-scale glacial lineation field, formed in thick till. Subsequent ice flow on northeast Cameron Hills occurred north to south, and a series of lobate and ice-thrust moraines suggest glacial surging. Rotational bedrock slumps cover the eastern and northern flanks of Cameron Hills, and extensive alluvial fan deposits draining from these slopes blanket the surrounding topography. The Cameron River formed as a glacial spillway, draining southwest across the upland before turning north and draining into Tathlina Lake. An expansive raised delta and glaciolacustrine sediment cover extending up to ~295 m above sea level, south of Tathlina Lake, records impoundment of an ice-marginal lake between the northeastward-retreating Laurentide Ice Sheet and Cameron Hills.

Abstract:
[Extract from Executive Summary] This project, aimed at the development of a novel, automated mechanism for the collection of scallop stock data was a sub-part of the Scottish Inshore Fisheries Integrated Data Systems (SIFIDS) project. The project reviewed the state-of-the-art remote sensing (geophysical and camera-based) technologies available from industry and compared these to inexpensive, off-the -shelf equipment. Sea trials were conducted on scallop dredge sites and also hand-dived scallop sites. Data was analysed manually, and tests conducted with automated processing methods. It was concluded that geophysical acoustic technologies cannot presently detect individual scallop but the remote sensing technologies can be used for broad scale habitat mapping of scallop harvest areas. Further, the techniques allow for monitoring these areas in terms of scallop dredging impact. Camera (video and still) imagery is effective for scallop count and provide data that compares favourably with diver-based ground truth information for recording scallop density. Deployment of cameras is possible through inexpensive drop-down camera frames which it is recommended be deployed on a wide area basis for further trials. In addition, implementation of a ‘citizen science’ approach to wide area recording is suggested to increase the stock assessment across the widest possible variety of seafloor types around Scotland. Armed with such data a full, statistical analysis could be completed and data used with automated processing routines for future long-term monitoring of stock.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The aim is to review the clinical benefits of mindful moving techniques for persons with multiple sclerosis. Condition being studied: Multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system (Gholamzad et al., 2019; Oh, Vidal-Jordana, & Montalban, 2018). It has shown to be increasing since 2013, and as of 2020 the estimated number of people with MS is 2.8 million worldwide (Walton et al., 2020). Due accumulation of relapses or gradual progression, disability from MS is worsening over time (Cameron & Nilsagard, 2018), which results in common symptoms like pain, imbalance, weakness, motor disorders, fatigue, depression, and more (Cameron & Nilsagard, 2018; Guicciardi et al., 2019).
