Full textOne of the major pilgrimages of the Middle Ages, the travels to Santiago de Compostela were responsible for the creation of routes that would allow a most comfortable ride to those who followed towards the apostle´s relics. In order to meet the hardships that these travelers had on the route course, it was established a support network that could provide them their physical and spiritual needs, influence of biblical teachings regarding charity, besides encouraging visitation of smaller shrines that were on the routes. Hospitality started in monasteries soon allowed the emergence of religious and military orders which were intended to assist the pilgrims . Kings and nobles also had a key role in building hospitable facilities in order to assist the walkers of God. Thus this work proposes a reflection about the importance given to the assistance to the Jacobean pilgrims during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, a period when the pilgrimages to Compostela were at peak. From a guide for pilgrims and documents showing the monarchy and nobility concern about them, we will try to analyze how the aid to the pilgrim was observed and discussed at that time and also the role of kings and nobles in the constitution of welfare institutions.

This master study aimed to investigate the search for meaning in people who had made a pilgrimage on the Way of St. James. For this, beside literature research, we also made an empiric research. We developed a questionnaire based on interviews and testimonies collected by us. Subsequently, the questionnaires were tabulated and analyzed. We concluded that the Way of St. James is not only a Catholic route, not just a religious route. It includes numerous speeches and values, religious and secular. This allows the pilgrim to contact himself, enabling considerations and questions about himself, his life and the reality which the pilgrim belongs to. So it makes possible the construction of a new meaning for his own life

The objective of this thesis is to analyze the phenomenon of the peregrination in the modern and contemporary society and its interfaces with the religious tourism. The Way of the Faith (a route for peregrination officially inaugurated in February 12 of 2003) and the people who cover it as well served as the ethnographic field of the research. The itinerary begins in Tambaú (SP), city where the Priest Donizetti Tavares de Lima lived, and crosses some cities of the interior of São Paulo and the south of Minas Gerais, with the goal to arrive at Aparecida (SP), place of the biggest Brazilian catholic sanctuary. In a total of 415 kilometers, the route can be considered the newest and biggest permanent track of Brazil. This study will focus on an interpretation of the Way of Faith peregrination phenomenon from the theoretical perspective adopted by Eade and Sallnow (1991), who had established a new boarding for the studies of the peregrination, which is to analyze the diversity of speeches and points of view present in the peregrination. My look will be primarily directed to the diversity of historical, cultural, religious, politicians and economical contexts that are brought up to date in the diverse constituent dimensions of the object of study.
