Abstract:

Abstract:
This Project Work looks into the communicational dimension of onedevelopment strategy for rural development through tourism in rural areas ofwestern Serbia. In 2011 the regional Development agency of Uzice -‘Zlatibor’, together with the Camping Association of Serbia started a projectof mini camping sites in the rural areas of western Serbia. The aim was tomeet an unemployment issue by capacitating and empowering locals to takean active part in rural camping tourism. The purpose of this study is todetermine both strengths and weaknesses in the development project from acommunicational point of view. The methods used to gather data in thisresearch are qualitative semi structured interviews and participantobservation. The study examines the presence and/or absence of C4D in thestrategy’s planning and implementation, and considers ways in which astronger and clearer focus on C4D could lead to enhancement of the processof community-based development in the rural area and building of touristcapacities within the local community. The findings of the study indicate thatan unclear responsibility sharing between stakeholders and neglecting of thecommunicational aspect in the planning and implementation of the projectcould lead to an insufficient communication among participants. This lackingcommunication has shown to suppress the full potential of the developmentproject.

Abstract:
During this creative project rationale, developed from scientific fact, community needs and the values inherent to the student was utilized as the foundation for decisions associated with the development of a campground facility for Prairie Creek Reservoir. Comprehensive and site specific problem-solving methods were used to form a broad overview of the park and recreation planning and design procedures available to landscape architects. At the comprehensive scale, a survey was conducted to assess the community need for the camping experience. An inventory of existing camping opportunities available to the residents of Delaware County was used, in conjunction with the survey results and recreation standards, in a supply/demand equation to determine the number and the type of camping facilities needed to meet present and future demand for the camping experience. The concept of camping at Prairie Creek Reservoir Park was viewed in this light.Site scale investigations began with the establishment of user and resource criteria. Natural, cultural and economic data were collected from the landscape contained within, and immediately surrounding, the property leased by the Muncie Park Board at the Prairie Creek Reservoir site. This information was analyzed in accordance with the design criteria to produce a series of computer generated maps. The student identified alternative campground sites within the site with the help of these visual aids. The campground site, best meeting the user needs and resource capabilities, was selected and a series of development proposals for the campground facility was prepared.

This article investigates the influence of competition on price and product quality among Austrian camping sites, a market characterized by both horizontal (spatial) and vertical product differentiation. Theoretically, the effect of competition on quality is ambiguous and depends on the degree of cost substitutability between output and quality. Estimating a system of equations shows that intense competition has a positive impact on product quality and a negative effect on prices (conditional on quality). As high quality is associated with high prices, the total effect of competition on prices is rather small.

Daniels, Melissa Lynn. "Minimizing Visitor Impacts to Protected Lands: An Examination of Site Management and Visitor Education Methods." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42509.

Abstract:
This thesis contains two studies that explore different methods of visitor management in recreation. The management strategies studied here are both relatively indirect approaches intended to minimize the environmental and social impacts that visitors cause in protected areas. The Annapolis Rocks study focuses on visitors' evaluations of a site management strategy that shifted camping from a flat, open area to constructed side-hill campsites. A visitor questionnaire was administered before and after the treatment to determine visitors' ratings of importance and satisfaction for various campsite attributes. We found some evidence of visitor displacement but concluded that the site management strategy supported the intentions of the managers. The Leave No Trace study evaluates the effectiveness of the Trainer courses in improving the knowledge, ethics, and behavior of the participants and encouraging them to teach others in the community. This study employed pre-course, post-course, and follow-up questionnaires to evaluate the participants' short-term and long-term gains from the course. Trainer course participants showed significant short-term and long-term gains from the course, with a slight decline in the total gain four months after the course. The participants showed improvements in low-impact behaviors, suggesting that education is an effective visitor management strategy. These studies demonstrate that managers can be successful at controlling visitor impacts without relying on stringent regulations and enforcement.

Abstract:
This thesis is an examination into how nationalism continues to be an important source of identification and solidarity for people participating in alter-globalisation movements. Based on ethnographic research throughout the Zapatista Other Campaign, this thesis looks at the process of building Zapatista solidarity. This research thus follows Zapatismo, looking at how nationalism is a way of talking and of thinking about belonging in ways that develop ‘real’ material structures of solidarity and recognition. It explores what happens to ‘the national’ in the consolidation of ‘neozapatismo’ – a social and political project imagined as an alternative to neoliberal globalisation. Much of the academic literature on alter-globalisation lacks a critical engagement with questions of nationalism and national identity preferring instead to focus on global connections, and how these produce new, radical and innovative social imaginings. By radicalising notions of ‘democracy, justice and liberty’ the Zapatistas are seen to exemplify the possibility of radical politics in their practice of autonomy. Through research carried out in multiple sites across Mexico, Los Angeles and New York City, this thesis looks at how autonomy is lived and experienced in the everyday. It explores some of the different discourses of and about the Zapatistas that have emerged, looking to understand some of the ways in which neozapatismo is mediated, identifying two key players: Subcomandante Marcos and ‘alternative’ media. This thesis addresses questions of how to re-think ‘the national’ in imaginings of alternative forms of globalisation that can translate into social and political action.

Abstract:
This Case Study of the Universidade Federal do Pampa (UNIPAMPA) focuses on the websites of Jaguarão and Santana do Livramento’s campi. The objective is analyzing if UNIPAMPA activates its bordering condition and performs intercultural movements, in the scope of its communicated organization, in order to strategically approach the regional identity that exists in Brazilian-Uruguayan border. The literature review includes the following stages: First, cultures, identities and sociocultural practices are investigated through Landowski (2012), Thompson (2011) and Mattellart (2005). Then, based on Baldissera’s research (2007; 2008; 2009; 2011), the ways of interaction between planned discourses and context are understood. With Oliven (2002), Chauí (2014), Santos (2013) and Ristoff (2013), notes about the perspective of University`s role in XXI century, as well as its challenges, as internationalization, democratization and expansion, are established. Finally, the bordering condition is discussed, with the support of Dorfman (2009; 2013), Müller (2003; 2007) and Raddatz (2004; 2009), in order to understand the characteristic of regional identity in the borders between Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay. Afterwards, the analysis are made through Content Analysis, as proposed by Bardin (2011), in 50 texts from the section “Notícias” from the sites of the two referred UNIPAMPAS’s campi. The results show that UNIPAMPA activates its bordering conditions and considers the possibilities existing in both sides of the border. However, despite the fact of having intercultural competences and performing a few movements that tend to admit the Other, the University does not acknowledges itself as a “bordering University”, losing the opportunity of combining acting and discourses in benefit of its Institutional Project.

Abstract: Dengue has been an important public health problem in many continents. In America Aedes aegypti is the main dengue vector with high vectorial competence and antropophilic habits. For this reason, the disponibility of sensible indicators for avaliation of vector infestation is fundamental for the county vigilance system. Ae. aegypti entomologic vigilance in Campinas, SP, is based in Breteau Index (BI), which indicates the number of larval breedings in 100 premises. The objectives of this study were quantify and characterize the Ae. aegypti breedings, as well as estimate the larval infestation indeces in areas with dengue historic in noth region of Campinas , SP. It were analised the datum obtained in larval density avaliations realizaed by county health team between January 2005 and October 2009 in the áreas of health centers; S. Mônica, Anchieta, B. Geraldo and S. Marcos. In these areas the sampling was realized in conglomerate of blocks, in which were searched all premises, except those with high quantity of breeding sites (risk premises), wastelands, squares and parks. In the intra and peridomiciliar environment of these premises the potencial breedings (in condition of accumulate water) and the breedings with water (with or without larvae) were investigated. The larvae were collected and identified by Centro de Controle de Zoonoses laboratory, Campinas, S.P. For each area were estimated three larval índices, Breteau Index (BI), Predial Index (PI) and Container Index (CI). Also for each area the risk premises positivity were calculated with independent sampling. The flowerpot saucers and the others type were the most frequent potential and with water breeding sites. The breedings with highest Ae. aegypti positivity were the flowerpots, tires and water containers. The positivity of them were not affected by climatic conditions. The BI Index was most elevated in the 2009 than in previous years and exhibit elevated correlation with PI, and moderated with CI. All larval indices were most elevated in the highest temperature and rainfall months. The risk premises presented the highest positivity in 2006. Those with most frequent Ae. aegypti larvae were junk-dealers, automechanic's shops and the cemetery. It follows that there are a great breeding sites disponibility in all assessed areas. The BI not presented sensibility as ambiental risk indicator in the dry season when the prevention actions would be emphasized. The breeding sites can be differentiate in importance to vector through positivity estimation, although it is advisable incorporate others indicators to differentiate the breedings with respect to larvae abundance

Smuts, Lize-Marie. "Social Networking Sites as a New Public Sphere: Facebook and its Potential to Facilitate Public Opinion as the Function of Public Discourse – A Case Study of the 2008 Obama Campaign." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/4209.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Political Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
In the 17th and 18th centuries the bourgeois public sphere emerged as the conceptual space between the public, with its enclosed institutions and organisations, and the circle of the private life. It is within this more or less autonomous space that public discourse took place and public opinion, as a function of public discourse, was produced. The public sphere was realised as a necessary precondition of deliberative democracy where it needed to manifest commitments to freedom and equality in the communicative interaction between those partaking in the deliberative process. Since the 17th and 18th centuries, the public sphere has undergone various transformations and, even though it is largely argued that the utopian public sphere as conceptualised by Habermas does not yet exists, it is regarded as a necessary precondition that all democracies should strive towards. Since the 19th century, media has been one of the main intermediary institutions of the public sphere. Initially, the earlier mass media of press and broadcasting were regarded as adequate and beneficial for the conduct of democratic politics and the facilitation of public opinion in the public sphere. Information flow was, however, vertical and the heightened commercialisation experienced within the media market lead to the neglect of democratic communication roles between the public itself and the leaders, institutions and organisations. These forms of mass communication thus limited access and discouraged active political participation and deliberative dialogue within the public sphere. In the 20th and 21st centuries, new media, especially the internet, have been hailed as a potential way to break away from the vertical information flow and to create new arenas for public discourse. One emerging contending form of new media is social networking sites (SNSs). Even though SNSs were not initially developed for political reasons, they have been utilised by political figures in an attempt to broaden voter reach and to enhance their campaigns. Amongst the SNSs available on the internet, Facebook has emerged as the largest, fastest growing and most popular SNS amongst internet users between the ages of 18 and 24 in the world. In the past, this age demographic has shown a disinterest in politics and has thus been recognised as the previously politically disengaged age demographic. American president Barack Obama realised the potential of Facebook and incorporated it in his new ii media campaign during the presidential election of 2008. Facebook enabled Obama to expand his voter reach and communicate with the previously politically unengaged age demographic. It also enabled him to create an arena where political information regarding the candidate, campaign and relevant political issues can be provided. This opened a communication flow between Facebook members and the president. Arenas for public discourse were also established and the potential of Facebook to facilitate public opinion was realised. In this study, the question is asked whether Facebook, as a SNS, can be seen as an adequate forum where public discourse takes place and public opinion, as the function of public discourse, is facilitated. This study will therefore aim to explore whether a Facebook, as SNS, can be seen as a public sphere. With the help of a case study of the 2008 Obama campaign, Facebook has shown the potential to allow for public discourse to take place. Thus the notion of Facebook as facilitator of public opinion is supported by this study.

Die spezifischen Stickstofffrachten liegen i. M. bei 10 – 11 g/P/d, die spezifischen CSB-Frachten bei i. M. 52 – 68 g/P/d.
In rural communities seasonal factors complicate design and operation of wastewater treatment plants. Tourism as well as agricultural harvesting and processing campaigns are the major causes for seasonal load variations. Due to the fact that accommodation capacities in rural tourism industry rarely exceed 100 beds small sewage treatment plants are acquired if a connection to a sewer system is not feasible. Small wastewater treatment plants can be designed using the population equivalents (PE). According to the German Water Association spreadsheet ATV-DVWK-A 198, PEs are defined as the 85-%-percentile input load. Wastewater of basic accommodations like camping sites and lodges contains higher levels of nitrogen and phosphorous compounds than 'standard' domestic wastewater. The mean specific nitrogen loads reach 10 – 11 g/guest/d, the mean specific COD-load 52 – 68 g/guest/d. The special amenities of vacation homes (restaurant, laundry) affect the real loads and have to be considered in dimensioning. Regarding the treatment of seasonal wastewater, processes with large upstream buffer or large internal buffer, such as constructed wetlands, are suitable. Furthermore, at moderate temperatures anaerobic pretreatment devices, like anaerobic baffled reactors (ABR), can reduce the input load to aerobic post treatment stages. An approximate COD elimination of 50 % can be expected by anaerobic degradation and sedimentation in the ABR in combination with upstream primary clarifiers at around 20 °C. Due to the strong temperature dependence, the long start-up-period, the sensitivity towards fail-desludging, the generation of immediate oxygen demand at low temperatures as well as unpredictable sludge overflow events, it does not seem justified to calculate higher design elimination efficiencies for ABRs than for sedimentation tanks. The design of subsurface vertical flow constructed wetlands with seasonally induced high loading periods are approved for the elimination of organic substances. This accepted assumption was confirmed for the plant under investigation operated at a mean COD-load of 20 g/m²/d, not exceeding the effluent control values for COD in six years. In contrast, oxidation of ammonia and nitrite were inhibited by high sulfide levels (mean sulfide concentration: 48 ± 26 mg/L). Nitrite accumulation reached its peak value at 55 mg NO2-N/L and decreased within 4 years below 1 mg/L due to the adaption of nitrite-oxidizing microorganisms

Tourism is the main industry for eastern Taiwan, and the area is also the first and best choice for tourists, especially for camping goers, when they are planning their trips. According to Chinese Camp Association, the number of normal campers is going to be over 2 million, and people who go to eastern Taiwan, especially Hualien and Taitung, are growing in a surprising speed. The study is going to analyze camping travel by assuming that the camping site was the primary accommodating place at night, and the campers would go to nearby attractions in the daytime. Using the concept of Big Data and employing Chi-square statistics to analyze Chinese texts online. I try to find out the relationship between camping sites and their nearby attractions in Eastern Taiwan. That is, in the twenty representative camping sites in Hualien and Taitung, I compare each of them with over 100 spots in government open data and google recommended attractions by counting its χ2 figure of chi-square test. By doing so, I can choose the highest three in figure of the camping sites for further analysis. In the result of the analysis, I find when choosing camping sites and attractions, most campers have put two ideas into consideration-distance and popularity of the attractions. Through Network Analysis, furthermore, the distance and travel time from the camping site to the attractions can also be figured out. The result of the study can be a reference for people camping in eastern Taiwan.

ABSTRACT After two days off per week, Taiwanese demand for outdoor activities is also rising. Participate in various activities can release work stress. Camping areas in Taiwan have mushroomed in recent years. There is no government administration or specification to manage the camping sector. Therefore, the camping site quality is uneven. This study mainly focuses on multi-criteria camping sites selection. We desire to develop an objective camping site selection making for campers. This study adopts the AHP analysis method of multi-attribute decision making to deal the above problem. In the first part, the criterion importance is calculated by experts’ questionnaires. The campers’ questionnaires are then analyzed with criterion weights those are generated from the first part for overall camping sites selection in the second part. Finally, the order of excellent camping site is list as: Garden No. Six, Very Natural, Water and Trees, Field Sample, Commas. In the future, the criterion mentioned in this study can provide the government administration draw up the specification for camping industry when they need. We hope the quality of camping industry in Taiwan can be improved continually. Keywords: camping industry, multi-attribute decision making, expert system, AHP.

Many studies have noted that the conflict between gender and party stereotypes may disadvantage Republican female candidates among some voters. On the other hand, gender and party attachment may also prove advantageous for Republican women in competitive races where moderate and independent voters play an important role. In this paper, the author examines how partisanship and race competitiveness impact how, and if, female candidates choose to emphasize their gendered identity, highlight women’s interests, and pursue a feminine trait strategy on their campaign websites. The author gives special attention to Republican female candidates running in competitive races, and argues that these candidates may have an extra incentive and ability to connect with voters by emphasizing gender. This study uses data collected through a content analysis of the campaign websites of 162 female candidates in the 2014 Congressional midterm election.

The attributes of the camping site is an important factor in influencing the campers' will to the camping base. It also discusses the relationship with the flow experience. This study uses the Kano method to explore the attributes of the camping site and the flow experience. Of 276 useful questionnaires are analyzed from Ximending travellers. empirical studies have found four significant effect: (1) The attributes of camping sites were classified to "Attractive quality", "one-dimensional quality" and "Indifference quality". (2) There are three aspects of camper's flow experience: "antecedent conditions", "characteristics", and "consequences of experience". The "preconditions" is the most important factor and the "experience results" is the least. (3) There is no difference in the flow experience of campers from different backgrounds. Only the "numbers of camping experience" and "the cost of camping equipments" are different. (4) "Management" is the attractive quality. The quality improvement index of the property attributes of the camping base indicated that 14 of the 24 camping site property elements can increase the satisfaction of the campers. The top three are "bathrooms, dressing rooms and other facilities" and "water intake". "Convenience" and "Complete waste disposal facilities".

Abstract With Taiwan getting into camping tide, the relative problems caused by the camping activity rose one after another but no relevant law and regulation could be complied. As camping activity is not reduced, it indeed makes us to ponder how can keep joy of camping without leaving a burden. Expect to understand campers’ general situation and relevance of perception and behavior through studying in its’ environmental perception and behavior. Find out the campers’ environmental perception positive cycle associated with its’ environmental behavior and can be further reinforced in order to make ecological environment sustainable. The purposes of this study were: 1. Analyze the type of Jianshih township, Hsinchu County camping area and the campers’ characteristics. 2. Understand the current situation of campers’ environmental perception and the discrepancy. 3. Understand the current situation of campers’ environmental behavior and the discrepancy. 4. Discuss the relevant circumstance between campers’ environmental perception and their environmental behavior. This study conducted a survey of “The relationships between Campers’ environmental perception and environmental behavior of camping site questionaire” by questionnaire method. The participants were the adult who camped in Jianshih Township, Hsinchu County and returned 330 valid questionnaires. The data analysis and comparison were conducted by SPPS 18 descriptive statistics, Independent-Sample T Test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient. According to the results of data analysis, the conclusions were as following: 1. The adult of camping family who camped in Jianshih township, Hsinchu County were among aged 31 to 45 years with high level education. The participants most dwelled in the northern region and the camping experiences were mostly less than 20 times. They visited the camp due to friends’ invitation or recommendation, and the primary motivation of camping was to promote the family relationship. 2. The campers were fond of nature and could duly handle the waste in camping activity. 3. In environmental perception, there were significant differences in campers’ camping frequency. 4. On the environmental behavior, there were significant difference in campers’ education level and camping frequency. 5. Campers’ environmental perception and environmental behavior presented a moderate positive correlation. More friendly camping behavior to environment conducted more susceptivity of environmental perception. More susceptive to ecological environment led more superior environmental behavior. Expect to offer reference for planners who engaged in camping activity and camping site and also provide private industry, government agencies the deliberation of the relevant provisions set through this study.

Williams, Cornelia C. "Satyrica signa: A Campana relief from the Via Gabina Villa at Site 10 (Italy)." Thesis, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/13410.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers one Campana relief fragment, depicting two satyrs looking into a basin with a lion's head above and between them, found at the Site 10 Roman villa, and explores its form, meaning and context. Comparisons with other Campana reliefs depicting the same scene indicate that stylistic criteria are not always sufficient for dating the reliefs. Archaeological evidence (brickstamps and wine-making press) from Phase IIa of the villa would indicate a structural and functional expansion of the villa c.40 A.D. On the basis of this archaeological evidence and comparison of the fragment with others from Site 10, especially with one dated to c.50 A.D., a similar date is offered for the selected fragment, as well as the others from Site 10. A suggestion is made, on the basis of iconography, for placing the relief to which the selected fragment belongs above the southern entrance of the Phase IIa villa.

In this study, we proposed a five-stage method of planning a Marketing Campaign Site through organizing the literature on website designing and site planning. According to the order, these five stages were “Planning”, “Designing”, “Construction”, “User Evaluation” and “Marketing & Maintenance”. At the planning stage, we interviewed with two owners of Kadahome in order to find out their needs of the website. They are currently most concerned about the four parts: “Development and maintenance of membership”, “Exposure”, “Product sales” and “Affordability”. We also interviewed with six members of Kadahome to extract from their hidden thoughts towards the image of biking campaign through ZMET (Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique). We obtained ten key concepts after analyzing. They were “Challenge”, “Relax”, “Goal”, “Tired”, “Nature”, “Unity”, “Health” and “Humanities / Characteristics”. At the designing stage, we further applied results from the planning stage to build a prototype of Marketing Campaign Site. In order to understand the pros and cons of the prototype which is user-oriented-based, we observe two owners and six members of Kadahome to realize their website usage behavior by participatory observation method.

The main theme of this essay is the role and function of the campaign websites, which Candidates organize their websites to promote themselves in the legislature election in 2004. In the first part, I search the candidates who form the websites through internet to collect the data. And then I compare with their party affiliation , running identities, sex, location, and level to find that these factors would affect the use of campaign websites, especially to find whether it will help the candidates achieve their goal and win the election or not. Second, I focus on the characters which are provided by websites, including their functions of transforming and receiving messages, the use of fundraising and hire of volunteers. By application of entire meeting, I interviewed some legislative candidates who form campaign websites. By their experience and point of views about campaign websites, I would get more information of the functions of these factors. According to the result of the local and aboriginal legislature election, there are 386 candidates run for election and 151 of them (39%) have formed the websites. It is obviously that many candidates willing to join on-line campaign. Major parties candidates are more active to form the websites than the independent or minor ones; the legislature candidates who run for re-election are more widespread than the ones running for the first time. The frequency of voters who browse internet also influences the situation of forming websites. The larger voting area and higher class level, the more widespread the candidates form websites. Most candidates who establish the websites feel positive for them, and recognize website can appeal voters to visit and help voters to realize them forward. But the function of campaign website are still regard the most popular in transmitting messages to voters, other functions, such as fundraising or hiring volunteers need to wait and see.

Dhawraj, Ronesh. "An investigation of the Democratic Alliance's political public relations campaign in the 2009 South African general elections including how social networking site Facebook was leveraged to help increase the party's vote-share." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/10602.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the political public relations campaign of the Democratic Alliance in the 2009 elections in order to explain the party’s performance in these elections. The research is premised on John Petrocik’s (1996) issue ownership theory. A number of quantitative and qualitative content analyses were conducted to provide answers to the main research questions. These involved: the party’s 286 media releases; party leader Helen Zille’s 2009 campaign speeches; and Zille’s Facebook platform. Results revealed that although the DA demonstrated extreme political resilience amidst fierce challenges in the 2009 elections, the party primarily campaigned on an anti-ANC ticket and a fair amount of negative advertising against the governing party to win itself votes. Not only did the party fail to “associate” itself with real issues affecting South African voters—especially the poor Black African majority which constitutes the largest voting bloc—it failed to pronounce itself clearly on other issues. Instead, the party attached itself to a multitude of shared issues, often “trespassing” on issues of common concern not necessarily “owned” by any one political party. This study also deduced that while Facebook facilitated public opinion on the DA in the 2009 elections, it still could not be regarded as a genuine public sphere in the South African context.
