Abstract:
Abstract Objective In Hebrew online health communities, participants commonly write medical terms that appear as transliterated forms of a source term in English. Such transliterations introduce high variability in text and challenge text-analytics methods. To reduce their variability, medical terms must be normalized, such as linking them to Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) concepts. We present a method to identify both transliterated and translated Hebrew medical terms and link them with UMLS entities. Materials and Methods We investigate the effect of linking terms in Camoni, a popular Israeli online health community in Hebrew. Our method, MDTEL (Medical Deep Transliteration Entity Linking), includes (1) an attention-based recurrent neural network encoder-decoder to transliterate words and mapping UMLS from English to Hebrew, (2) an unsupervised method for creating a transliteration dataset in any language without manually labeled data, and (3) an efficient way to identify and link medical entities in the Hebrew corpus to UMLS concepts, by producing a high-recall list of candidate medical terms in the corpus, and then filtering the candidates to relevant medical terms. Results We carry out experiments on 3 disease-specific communities: diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and depression. MDTEL tagging and normalizing on Camoni posts achieved 99% accuracy, 92% recall, and 87% precision. When tagging and normalizing terms in queries from the Camoni search logs, UMLS-normalized queries improved search results in 46% of the cases. Conclusions Cross-lingual UMLS entity linking from Hebrew is possible and improves search performance across communities. Abstract:
The Cameri Theatre of Tel Aviv has always presented itself as the first repertory theater in the Yishuv that represented the sabras, creating the impression that its actors and artists were themselves mainly sabras and Hebrew their native language. However, this image, based chiefly on the successful performance of the play He Walked through the Fields, does not reflect reality. The article questions the myth by exploring the actual number of sabra theater artists and actors in the troupe, their place and measure of influence. Exposing this image sheds light on The Cameri Theatre at its beginning as well as on the creation of the image of the sabra, as presented by the character of Uri, and embraced by Hebrew culture.

Albert Camus' 40. Todestag ist Anlaß, die literarische, kulturelle und politisch-soziale Bedeutung des Autors für die ehemals sozialistischen Länder zu dokumentieren. Camus' Interesse für diese Länder und die Unbestechlichkeit seines Urteils konnten von den oppositionellen Kräften als wirksame Unterstützung wahrgenommen werden; das belegen die Beiträge von acht LiteraturwissenschaftlerInnen, ÜbersetzerInnen und Kulturschaffenden, die an der Rezeption Camus' maßgeblich beteiligt waren und sind. Dabei wird deutlich, daß sich in der Auseinandersetzung mit Camus' Werk eine politische Haltung kundtat, die nicht selten eine Lebenshaltung und -entscheidung war.

This contribution discusses the potentialities of the Digital Story as a complement to literary analysis in the French foreign language (L2) classroom. The case study examines the Digital Story as an instructional tool in the reading of Camus’ seminal text, The Outsider, reflecting on the role it may play in addressing learning challenges in the L2 classroom and in moving beyond traditional reading postures and approaches. The Digital Story is shown to cultivate a scholarship of engagement and collaborative action in the teaching of literature. Furthermore, as a multimodal, multigenre form, it fosters potential for mapping out new interactions between reader, text and technology in the context of emerging literacies.

This chapter explores the role that consideration of form played in debates about the novel when a new generation of novelists came to the fore after the defeat of France in 1940. Reinforced by a widespread sense that the French novel lagged behind its European and American counterparts, the decade of the 1940s saw the emergence of a new ‘pensée romanesque’ triggered by the work of these novelists (Sartre, Duras, Beauvoir, Camus, Blanchot, Queneau, Triolet, Des Forêts, et al) and commented on explicitly by several of them (Blanchot, Queneau, Sartre) as well as by authors of critical essays, such as Claude-Edmonde Magny and Jean Pouillon. In their various ways, these writings testify to a perception that the nature of human experience had changed and that this change requires a transformation of the forms and techniques of fiction. This search for forms adequate to their object is accompanied — well before the emergence of the nouveau roman in the 1950s — by an equally strong sense that the novel needs to develop clearer generic definition and that this will necessarily entail a greater engagement with questions of its form, technique and language.

Now fifty years old, Vaughan Williams had fully attained the personal musical idiom that he had so diligently cultivated over the previous three decades. The maximalist tendencies of works like the Sea and London Symphonies were now largely purged from his style, while the influences of French impressionism and English folk song were increasingly subsumed within a flexibly pandiatonic framework enriched by modal and octatonic elements. Such an approach reached its extreme in works such as Flos Campi, Sancta Civitas, and the Seven Housman Songs (later revised and renamed Along the Field), but more conservative means of expression, often derived from English folk song, also persisted in compositions like Old King Cole, Hugh the Drover, the English Folk Songs Suite, and Six Studies in English Folksong. In between lay works with a pronounced neoclassical gloss, most notably the Concerto Accademico for violin and orchestra, and the opera Sir John in Love. Clearly, the works written during this period spanned a wide range of genres and practices on display, and also frequently plumbed new emotional depths and methods of stylistic disruption, sublimating their influences within Vaughan Williams’s increasingly distinctive and idiomatic musical language.
