Abstract:
A theoretical model for managers responding to a morally challenging situation is developed in the article. This model explores and examines how managers deal with paradoxes created by ethical dilemmas. To explain their strategy, the authors’ model combines a moral philosophy approach – existentialism ‒ with paradox theories. Starting with an emblematic situation such as a dilemma, the lens of Smith and Tushman’s Paradoxical Cognition is used to develop the theoretical construct. Then, with the help of Sartre’s ethics of freedom, two stages that managers pass through to find a solution are exp

A 2015 Canadian prevalence study by the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE) found that seniors who are mistreated are more willing to talk to other seniors, rather than clinicians, police or family. However, a lack of knowledge, access to resources, and community stigma may limit seniors’ abilities to address mistreatment. This study evaluated the impact on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of having seniors del

Over 8 million Canadians provide care to chronically ill or disabled family members. While most caregivers are between the ages of 45 and 54 (24%) and 55 and 64 years (20%), the third largest group is young carers. Carers between the ages of 15 and 24 account for 15% of all caregivers in Canada. This group of carers are those under the age of 25 that provide significant and ongoing unpaid care to a family member or friend. However, despite these known figures, very little attention has been paid to the existence of young carers in Canada except for scant emerging research. Our two-phased study

Global anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and hazardous air pollutants have produced broad yet regionally disparate changes in climatic conditions and pollutant deposition in the Canadian boreal zone (the boreal). Adapting boreal resource management to atmospheric change requires a holistic understanding and awareness of the ongoing and future responses of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems in this vast, heterogeneous landscape. To integrate existing knowledge of and generate new insights from the broad-scale impacts of atmospheric change, we first describe historical and present t

During pregnancy, the risk for ID and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) increases due to the additional iron requirements to support expansion of blood volume/red cell mass and growth of the fetus and placenta (McMahon, 2010; Mei et al

Lack of communication in a family’s preferred language is inequitable and results in inferior care. Professional medical interpreters offer a route to enhanced understanding and safety. There is no data available about Canadian paediatric residents’ use of interpreters, making it difficult to identify gaps in practice or develop targeted interventions to improve patient experience. Abstract Introduction: Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare disease caused by mutations that impair formation of GPI anchors. Absence of GPI-linked molecules CD55 and CD59 renders blood cells sensitive to complement-mediated damage. The classic presentation includes intravascular hemolysis, thrombophilia, and marrow failure. Other symptoms, such as fatigue, dysphagia, and abdominal pain may also occur. Eculizumab inhibits complement protein C5 and has drastically improved outcomes in PNH. Despite greater awareness of PNH since eculizumab's approval, it remains a rare disease and
