This dissertation contributes to a strand of literature on the economic integration of immigrants in Canada's labour market. My first essay examines the economic return to human capital acquired abroad using an improved identification strategy of foreign education and work experience. My second essay examines whether education-job mismatches, on the part of immigrants, possibly explain their poor labour market outcomes. My final essay provides new evidence on the economic assimilation of U.K. immigrants in Canada over the late 19th and early-20th-century.In my first essay I exploit the enhance

This study explores the psychological and social aspects of the experience of being disowned. Disownment can arise at two levels. At the intrapersonal level disownment is characterized by: the repression of emotions, needs, and aspects of one's personality. At the interpersonal level, disownment involves the complete break in social, emotional, economic, familial support and community relations. This paper examines the relationship between the two. With more than 200,000 new immigrants admitted every year, Canada is one of the major immigrant accepting nations globally. Recent immigrants have better health compared with the average for the host population at the time of entry in the country, a phenomenon coined as the healthy immigrant effect. A combination of post immigration experiences may influence the health of these new immigrants. Consequently, some may lose the initial health advantage and may 'converge' to the average health of the Canadian population. Understanding the lives of Italian women who migrated to Canada and Australia in the post-war period is the goal of this thesis. Although governments assigned women secondary roles as dependants and 'followers' in the migration process, I argue that Italian women were central, not marginal, to the migration and settlement experiences of Italian immigrants. By placing Italian women front and centre of this study, I contribute to a small but growing body of work that challenges the male-centred perspective of most literature on Italian-Canadian and Italian-Australian migration and ethnicity.

The aim of this thesis is to shed light upon the construction of identity within the Swedish- Canadian immigrant group during the first half of the 20th century. The most important sources of ethnic and nationalistic influences this study scrutinizes are the homeland Sweden, Swedish-America, Scandinavian-Canada and the Canadian host society. It also examines the interaction with other social identities, such as gender and religion. Theoretically, this dissertation takes its point of departure in Fredrik Barth’s assumptions on cultural boundaries and ethnic grouping, which emphasizes the mee

This project explores the history of Germans in Canada: their experiences prior to, during, and after the Second World War. The primary focus of this project will be on the construction of the German Canadian identity in the years after the Second World War. I contend that German Canadian immigrants from the post-war years experienced discrimination and negativity which forced them to submerge their true identities. I present a qualitative study investigating the self-perceived health of recently arrived Canadian immigrants. The study develops health promotion’s understanding of culture as a social determinant of health, and conceptually locates it within a broader context of psychosocial factors. The study involves semi-structured individual interviews focusing on self-perceived health and well-being. The sample group consists of recently arrived (within the last 10 years) adult immigrants between 23 and 46 years of age, from a variety of cultural backgrounds, who participate with the YMCA Cross Cultural

The Maple Bamboo Initiative is a pilot project initiated by the Multicultural Helping House in Vancouver, BC. In the spring, summer and fall of 2007, the two-part initiative focused on training new immigrants about Canadian public processes and increasing local host agencies’ capacities to create volunteer opportunities for trainees in host organizations. Building Canadian immigrant capacity is central to increasing immigrants’ representation on local boards, advisory councils, at public forums and in mainstream public processes. At the same time, mainstream organizations must increase th
