Abstract:
The object of this chapter is to describe and analyse the workings of labour, land, and credit markets of two villages in Bihar, four decades back, when the so-called ‘green revolution’ promised much—and certainly occupied the attention of academics and practitioners alike. The region had just started to benefit from the Kosi barrage and its extensive canal system, and new, high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice requiring irrigation were being introduced on a large scale. It is against this historical background that I examine the prevailing contractual relations in the light of the theoretical advances that were made in the decades that followed.

Davies, Andrew. Projects: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198727668.001.0001.

Abstract:
What is a project? How is it organized? Projects: A Very Short Introduction looks at how projects have developed since the industrial revolution to create the human-built world in which we live, work, and play. Considering some of our greatest endeavours—such as the Erie Canal, Apollo Moon landing, and Chinese eco-city projects—it identifies how projects are organized and managed to design and produce large and complex systems, cope with fast changing conditions, and deal with the immense uncertainties required to create breakthrough innovations in products and services. It concludes by considering how projects could be organized to address the challenges facing the post-industrial society of the 21st century.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the hominin tribe as it branches off within the hominoid diversification. It considers the differences between humans and chimpanzees, and explores the systems of classification of the human lineage. Next come the different adaptive strategies of the various genera of the human lineage. An outcome of different adaptations are the derived characteristic human traits, from large brains to bipedalism, which is the only apomorphy universally shared by the human lineage. Bipedalism is analyzed in detail, morphologically as well as functionally, including biomechanical features, comparing fossil exemplars to preserved footprints. The final issue explored is the narrowing of the birth canal caused by different degrees of bipedalism. Bipedalism changed somewhat its function when adjusting to running in the open savannas.

Anschuetz, Kurt, Eileen L. Camilli, and Christopher D. Banet. Agricultural Landscapes. Edited by Barbara Mills and Severin Fowles. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199978427.013.39.

Abstract:
The discussion in this chapter is based on the premise that agricultural landscapes are the foundations of the economies, social organizations, and cultural identities of farming communities. It reviews selected archaeological districts between Sonora and the northern Rio Grande in which technologically diverse agricultural features, including trincheras, terraces, rock-bordered grids, gravel mulches, and canals, are well documented. This examination shows that large-scale field complexes, including those dependent on canal irrigation, are widespread throughout the pre-colonial North American Southwest, with some dating to the Late Archaic. Consideration of the Tewa Basin of north-central New Mexico as a case study introduces the idea that shrines are other essential agricultural landscape features, which possess the potential to contribute toward fuller understandings of farming settlement dynamics.

Baloh, Robert W. Hallpike’s Caloric Test. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190600129.003.0015.

Full text
Abstract:
Charles Hallpike decided that greater precision could be obtained with the caloric test by measurement of one or more attributes of the responses to some suitably graded stimulus. He chose to measure the duration of induced nystagmus. Hallpike chose water at 30°C and 44°C (7°C below and above body temperature, respectively) and allowed it to flow for 40 seconds. These temperatures were generally well tolerated, and the comparatively large quantity of water and rapid flow minimized errors due to misdirecting the stream within the ear canal. A simple chart was used to summarize the results of the bithermal caloric test. The chart consisted of two continuous lines, each representing a total of a 3-minute period, subdivided into 10-second intervals. Hallpike conducted a series of experiments on the phenomenon of directional preponderance with caloric testing and emphasized the importance of vestibular tonus originating from the inner ear receptors.

Abstract:
The Ottoman reforms of the mid-nineteenth century accelerated the process of opening up Syria to European travellers and traders, and gave Syria's Jews access to European Jewish communities. The resulting influx of Western ideas led to a decline in the traditional economy. It also allowed for the introduction of Western education, influenced the structure and the administration of Jewish society in Syria, and changed the balance of the relationship between Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Initially Syria's Jewish communities flourished in these new circumstances, but there was a developing recognition that their future lay overseas. After the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, the bankruptcy of the Ottoman Empire in 1875, and the suspension of the Ottoman constitution in 1878, this feeling intensified. A process of decline set in that ultimately culminated in large-scale Jewish emigration. Thereon, the future for Syrian Jews lay in the West, not the East. This book covers Jewish community life, the legal status of Jews in Syria, their relationship with their Muslim and Christian neighbours, and their links with the West. It draws on a range of archival material in six languages, including Jewish, Christian Arab, and Muslim Arab sources, Ottoman and European documents, consular reports, travel accounts, and reports from the contemporary press and by emissaries to Syria of the Alliance Israélite Universelle. Rabbinic sources are particularly important in opening a window onto Syrian Jewish life and concerns. Together these sources bring to light an enormous amount of material and provide a broad, multifaceted perspective on the Syrian Jewish community.
