Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Aiming to characteristics of large canal slope, the key problem of slope optimization for large canal was studied, and synthetic optimization methods of canal slope were put forward: 1. Enough geological exploration and geotechnical test are beneficial to determine shear strength parameters accurately and to prevent conservative design. 2. Appropriate slope stability analysis method of large canal was chosen, and anti-sliding stability of canal slope accurately was evaluated considering the effect of canal stage excavation and large board concrete liner on canal slope stability. 3. The whole canal slope optimization was embodied through controlling the anti-sliding stability safety factor affluence of canal slope. 4. Based on permissible minimum slope gradient and practically economic cross-section of canal, an optimization method of canal slope was put forward considering slope stability and minimum cost. In addition, concept of permissible limited state and permissible limited gradient for canal slope were proposed.

Abstract:
Aim: To evaluate the ability of rotary (ProTaper Universal [PTU] and ProTaper Next [PTN]), reciprocating (Reciproc [R] and WaveOne [WO]) and adaptive (Twisted File Adaptive [TFA]) systems in maintaining the original canal profile in straight and curved parts after apical preparations up to size 40. Methods: Resin blocks with simulated curved canals were randomly assigned to five groups: PTU, PTN, R, WO and TFA. Images were captured from each block before and after canal preparation (n=10). Assessment of canal transportation was obtained for the straight and curved parts of the canal. ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test was used (α = 5%). Results: Transportation values were increased at the curved part (P = .00). For both canal levels, TFA system induced the lowest mean of canal transportation followed by PTN, R, WO and PTU systems. At the straight portion, transportation for R and TFA systems were similar (P > .05), and these values were significantly lower than for WO, PTN and PTU (P = .00). At the curved portion, TFA resulted in less canal transportation, followed by PTN, R, WO and PTU systems (P = .00). Conclusions: TFA system produced less canal transportation than other systems tested during large apical preparations.

ABSTRACT The success of root canal treatment is based on total elimination of root canal content, thorough cleaning, shaping and obturation of root canal system. Calcium hydroxide is recommended as intra-canal medicament because of its antibacterial properties, tissue dissolving ability, inhibition of tooth resorption and indication of tissue repair by hard tissue formation. The present case series highlights the use of calcium hydroxide as an inter appointment endodontic dressing for management of large periapical radiolucency and periodically reviewed. Thus the non surgical healing of large periapical lesions provided favourable clinical and radiographic response.

Abstract:
Vestibulo-ocular and second-order neurons in medial and superior vestibular nuclei of alert cats were identified by antidromic and orthodromic electrical stimulation, and their responses to whole body rotations were recorded in the dark. Neurons that had spatial sensitivity most closely aligned with the anterior canal (anterior canal neurons) were compared with neurons that had spatial sensitivity most closely aligned with the posterior canal (posterior canal neurons). Responses were recorded during low frequency earth-horizontal axis pitch rotations in the normal upright posture, and during earth-vertical axis pitch with the head and body lying on the left side. During upright pitch, response phases of anterior canal neurons slightly lagged those of posterior canal neurons or primary vestibular afferents, as previously reported. During on-side pitch, anterior canal neurons showed far greater phase leads with respect to head velocity than posterior canal neurons, primary vestibular afferents, or previously reported vestibulo-ocular reflex eye movements. These results provide challenges for vestibulo-ocular reflex models to incorporate central mechanisms for phase leads among the inputs to anterior canal neurons and to explain how the anterior canal neuron signals reported here combine with other signals to produce observed vestibulo-ocular reflex behavior.

Abstract:
Objectives: We report, with neuro-otologic findings, a very rare case of a large jugular bulb diverticulum eroding the internal auditory canal (IAC). Methods: We present the imaging and functional studies of a 29-year-old woman in whom a large jugular bulb diverticulum on the left side was found incidentally. Results: Imaging studies revealed a normal external auditory canal, middle ear, and inner ear, but a large jugular bulb diverticulum extending superiorly on the left side had eroded the IAC from below and behind with destruction of the petrous bone. Caloric responses and facial movements were normal. Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials with bone conduction stimuli were absent on the left, indicating dysfunction of the left inferior vestibular system. Conclusions: This is the first report in the English-language literature of detailed imaging and functional findings in a very large diverticulum invading the IAC. Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials were useful in uncovering subclinical inferior vestibular system dysfunction in the jugular bulb diverticulum invading the IAC.

Abstract:
Introduction: Root canal preparation is an important step in root canal treatment. The use of stainless steel K-Files is time-consuming and causes fatigue to patients and operators. The large taper endodontic hand instrument can be used as an option for another preparation instrument. The purpose of this article is to determine the advantages of using large taper endodontic hand instruments as a preparation instrument compared to conventional stainless steel K-Files. Case: The 24-year-old male patient presented with pain in his lower left tooth even though it was not used. Examination of teeth 35, percussion and press (+), palpation (-), CE (-), exploration of root canals with smooth broach (+). There was a radiolucent image in the distal crown that had reached the pulp chamber, radiolucency with a blurred border of 2 mm in diameter at the periapical area, and the dilation of the periodontal ligaments along with the roots. Tooth 35 diagnosis was partial pulp necrosis with periapical lesions. Case Management: Root canal treatment of teeth 35 using hand-used ProTaper with the crown down technique up to F4 WL = 21 mm. Obturation with single cone technique with Endomethasone as a sealer. Discussion: The large taper instrument is very flexible and easily enters narrow and bent root canals, thus it can shorten the working time, reduce the risk of fatigue for patients and operators, improves the cleaning of the root canal system, and consistent root canal formation. The crown down technique used can reduce the risk of preparation errors, prevent debris extrusion and improve obturation quality. Conclusion: Root canal preparation using a large taper endodontic hand instrument can shorten the working time and reduce the risk of fatigue for patients and operators compared to preparations using conventional stainless steel K-File.

Abstract:
In 1982, the Government of Alberta began a program to rehabilitate and expand existing irrigation headworks systems within southern Alberta. Particular emphasis was placed on effectively minimizing future seepage from these canal systems. To fulfill this requirement, Alberta Environment undertook an extensive study of methods of seepage control that would be most appropriate for use in this program. The study concluded that the installation of a complete canal buried membrane lining was one of the most effective methods for controlling seepage. The geomembrane material selected for use as the buried liner for this installation was 0.5 mm (20 mil) thick polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This paper presents the basis on which the complete canal buried membrane lining system was selected, the reasons for selecting the 0.5 mm (20 mil) thick PVC as the lining material, the quality control program for monitoring the purchasing of the PVC material, and the installation procedures used for placing the membrane within the canal cross section. The design criteria and construction procedures relevant to the earth cover material being placed on the membrane liner are also presented. Abstract:
Frost heave of canal foundation soil is the main factor of destroying canal system engineering in the cold area. Restricted by technical and economic conditions, further evaluation of the frost heaving index and system of the large channel in cold areas where needed. Based on the field investigation and relevant evaluation methods, several evaluation indexes such as water content, compaction coefficient, fine grain content, and cumulative negative surface gas temperature, the direction of canal slope are selected. Combined with the observation results of the prototype test field for many years, the frost heave degree of large channel foundation soil was comprehensively evaluated. The purpose of this paper is to standardize the evaluation method of frost heave characteristics of canal foundation soil in cold region, which has important guiding significance for the prevention and control of road frost damage in the cold region.

Abstract:
The drainage system elements, namely, the canals, lose their initial design characteristics over time. In general, the canals with unstable profiles are often in the reclamation construction. The problems of unstable profiles of the canals are, primarily, related to the physical and mechanical properties of soils, formation of internal mechanical, as well as chemical and biological processes occurring by the action of natural conditions. Maximum stability is characteristic for canals formed in cohesive organic soils, as well as in various kinds of peat with their thickness considerably exceeding the depth of the canal. With insignificant peat thickness above mineral soils, the stability of the drainage canal slopes will be rather insignificant. Wood peats are the most stable among organic soils. The canals laid in sapropelic soils characterized by the natural flow have rather low stability. That is why, the required stability in wet soils can be achieved by removing the excess moisture. The slopes of the canals made in various clays and loams with their large thickness considerably exceeding the depth of the canal have relatively high stability.

Background Dens invaginatus is a maldevelopment of the dental germ which occurs as a result of the invagination of the enamel organ. These cases may present difficulties with respect to its diagnosis and treatment because of canal morphology. The success of endodontic therapy requires a knowledge of dental anatomy and its anomalies. Case report A 17-year-old female patient is reported presenting right maxillary lateral incisor (tooth no. 7) classified as type III dens invaginatus with necrotic pulp and presence of an extensive radiolucid lesion. Endodontic treatment was recommended for tooth. However, intracanal exudate was present, suggesting a resistant infection. Enucleation of the lesion was performed as a complementary approach. The root canal obturation was carried out by the gutta-percha thermoplastification technique with root canal sealer, followed by restoration of the tooth. Healing of the lesion with hard tissue formation was confirmed at follow-up. Conclusion A combination of endodontic and surgical treatments were fundamental to the maintenance of the tooth. The treatment was considered successful. Clinical significance Root canal therapy of dens invaginatus should be based on a thorough clinical and radiographic evaluation. The knowledge of classification and anatomical variations of teeth with dens invaginatus are of great importance for correct treatment. Abstract:
The Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (MRP) is an important water supply for 20 large cities and 100 counties in Northern China. However, since 2016, the growth of large filamentous algae clusters has threatened the safety of the main canal water supply and water quality. In this study, a field investigation, monitoring, and hydrodynamic simulation were performed to analyze the hydrodynamic habitat conditions in areas with vigorous algae growth and establish a relationship between the hydrodynamic habitat conditions of the main canal and the growth, distribution, and correlation of macrobenthic algae in the main canal. The results showed that: (1) algae zones in the main canal are more likely to appear along curves, and the largest algal zone was at the front of the large curved section; (2) the length of the algae growth zone is related to the flow rate; and (3) a lower flow velocity in the main canal facilitates faster growth of an algae zone. This study provides specific and effective suggestions for the key prevention and control positions, which has important guidance on improving the efficiency of algae control in the main canal.

Abstract:
In view of the problems of complex geological conditions with high underground water level, large permeability coefficient of soil and the presence of large seepage hazard of deep cut canal and deep foundation pit project of South-to-North Water Transfer Project, China, research on seepage characteristics of digging canals under dewatering well is carried out by finite element analysis, and the FORTRAN procedure is programmed. The three-dimensional finite element model of a digging canal is built, and the seepage field of the different conditions of the canal is simulated, the water head distribution, saturation line and leakages are obtained, and the rules and characteristics of steady seepage field under design impervious system are analyzed. The results indicate that the method can exactly determine the key overflow point and saturation line of canal, and well predict seepage field in canal. The results should be of guiding significance to design and construct retaining engineering in deep cut canal and deep foundation pit.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveSafe cochlear implantation is challenging in patients with canal wall down mastoid cavities, and the presence of large meatoplasties increases the risk of external canal overclosure. This paper describes our results of obliteration of the mastoid cavity with conchal cartilage as an alternative procedure in cases of canal wall down mastoidectomy with very large meatoplasty.MethodsThe cases of seven patients with a canal wall down mastoidectomy cavity who underwent cochlear implantation were retrospectively reviewed. Post-operative complications were analysed. The mean follow-up duration was 4.5 years.ResultsThere was no hint of cholesteatoma recurrence and all patients have been free of symptoms during follow up. Only one patient showed cable extrusion six months after surgery, and implantation of the contralateral ear was needed.ConclusionPseudo-obliteration of the mastoid cavity with a cartilage multi-layered palisade reconstruction covering the electrode may be a safe alternative in selected patients with a large meatoplasty.

Abstract:
We prefer the intact canal wall technique for tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy, but use a canal wall down procedure in up to 25 % of oases. Creating a round cavity with a large meatus is imperative if one is to obtain a trouble-free ear. The five types of canal wall down procedures are defined, as are our indications for using them. Results in 19 only hearing ears and 19 labyrinthine fistula cases are presented, along with 64 tympanoplasty cases.

Abstract:
This is an exhaustive study of French economic interests in Egypt, the development of a particular type of capitalism in Egypt, and Franco-British relations in Egypt between the British Occupation in 1882 and World War I. It is based on an extraordinarily wide range of sources from Belgium, Britain, Egypt, and France, including British, Egyptian, and French diplomatic documents and material from a variety of banks and business enterprises, such as the Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas, Crédit Lyonnais, La Compagnie du Canal de Suez, and La Société Générale. The book was published in 1997, but—and this is the only negative remark I shall make—it is a matter of some regret that (apart from some of the author's own more recent papers) its very wide-ranging bibliography stops somewhere around the end of the 1980s, possibly because the doctorat d'État, of which this book is “une version réduite” (p. xi) was defended in 1991. There is a warmly appreciative preface by Saul's maître, Jacques Thobie, author of Intérêts et impérialisme français dans l'Empire ottoman (1895–1914), and Saul expresses his own debt to Thobie and other French historians of overseas investments in Morocco, Russia, and Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (Allain, Girault, Guillen, Poidevin).

Abstract:
This case report describes an endodontic treatment of a mandibular second premolar with type IV root canal. A 26-year-old male patient reported pain in right mandibular second premolar. Clinical examination showed a large carious lesion with pulp exposure. Radiographs showed minimal periapical changes and slight widening of periodontal ligament space. Mandibular second premolars usually have one canal. The mandibular second premolar may present large number of anatomic variations. The clinician should be aware of the configuration of the pulp system. This case presents the diagnosis and clinical management of a mandibular second premolar with two distinct canals in the apical third of root (Type IV Wiene’s canal configuration), drawing particular attention to tactile examination of all the canal walls and obturating it with calamus 3D obturation system.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate different microbial morphotypes in the root canal infection associated with chronic diffuse periapical lesion. In forty cases of asymptomatic teeth with radiographically diagnosed diffuse periapical lesion we took specimens of infected tissue from the root canals at the beginning of endodontic treatment. Fixation and four different staining methods of the specimens were obtained to provide microscope examination. All examined root canal specimens were heavily infected by bacteria. The most commonly identified were cocci 92 %, small mostly G+ diplococci and large G+cocci in clusters and grapelike groups, bacilli found in 67%, coccobacilli 37%, fungi 17%, and spirochetes in 5%.

Abstract:
The objective of this case report was to describe the retreatment of an immature upper right central incisor in a 20-year-old female patient after unsuccessful endodontic treatment, who had probable clinical-radiographic diagnosis of a large periapical inflammatory cyst and persistent fistula. After removing the root canal filling material, disinfection of the root canal system, and successive intracanal medication changes over 60 days, the fistula remained active. Therefore, parendodontic surgery was performed. The root canal system was obturated, the periapical cyst was surgically enucleated, and retro-obturation with mineral trioxide aggregate was performed. We used the guided tissue regeneration technique with a xenograft and resorbable membrane. On histopathological examination, we observed bacterial colonies present in the lumen of the cystic lesion. Clinical evaluation, periapical radiograph, and cone-beam tomography confirmed complete healing of the periapical area of the affected tooth. The treatment success was verified by periapical healing over a follow-up period of 21 months.

Abstract:
Surgeons who utilize the suboccipital approach for the removal of large vestibular schwannomas, can perform a planned labyrinthectomy from within the intracranial cavity via the suboccipital exposure. This transcranial translabyrinthine approach provides one of the major advantages of the conventional transmastoid translabyrinthine approach, namely, unambiguous identification of the facial nerve as it exits the internal auditory canal, without the need for complete mastoidectomy and labyrinthectomy. The labyrinthectomy is best performed prior to the complete exposure of the internal auditory canal. The approach requires the surgeon to identify the endolymphatic sac intracranially, then drill the temporal bone and follow the vestibular aqueduct to the utricle. The lateral and superior semicircular canal ampullae, the superior vestibular nerve, Bill's bar, and the facial nerve at the lateral end of the internal auditory canal can then be identified. After testing on multiple cadaver temporal bones, this approach was used in patients with large tumours that extended far laterally in the internal auditory canal. The steps in the technique are described in detail.
