Before railroad and lorry traffic became common, many canals were built for transportation purposes. Water quality in canals has become a major concern as maintenance of these historically active canals has declined. A generic canal model has been developed to simulate the hydro-environmental processes specifically relevant to inland navigational canals, namely lockage, weir overflow, boat traffic, and algal growth. Apart from the movement of water, three types of particulate matter are tracked: algae (chlorophyll-a), inorganic non-cohesive sediment, and inorganic cohesive sediment. The newly

Waterways are usually contaminated with wastes from industrial, domestic or irrigation sectors. Organizations in charge have adopted solutions to eliminate this problem; however, the adopted solutions contribute indirectly to modifying canal morphology during maintenance. These are examples of anthropogenic activity, as well as randomly implemented dredging, which expand the canal cross-sections. Egypt is a country which depends on surface irrigation through a huge network of canals. The majority of canals in Egypt are subject to anthropogenic activity which affects their efficiency. Effective use of irrigation canals in the supply of water to the Water Consumers Association is one of the urgent tasks. During the field surveys, the current condition of the canal and the technical condition of the hydraulic structures in it were fully monitored, and as a result of many years of field data, the operation of the canal was analyzed. The purpose of this chapter, is to provide a Maintenance and Reliability Management Model for the project: Design and Construction of the Third Set of Locks in the Panama Canal, with the approach of the process of asset management optimization. A practical vision of the maintenance and reliability management process and framework is presented with the idea of: Structuring the maintenance management process by grouping management activities within a series of so-called management building blocks; Structuring the framework grouping techniques that can be used to support decisions to be taken within each of these building block. This chapter presents not only a process but also the framework and techniques to manage and improve maintenance and reliability effectiveness and efficiency. Abstract This paper focuses on the customs of community-based irrigation management (CBIM) in Japan, which represent Japanese water culture. There are two aspects to the customs of irrigation canal management: (1) the custom of assigning maintenance work responsibility among stakeholders; and (2) allocation of maintenance workload. These customs have changed over time due to socio-economic changes in rural communities and the physical changes in irrigation. In this sense, adaptive change in water culture at the rule-in-use level may contribute to maintaining CBIM. Depopulation and aging in rural society have a severe influence on CBIM and government policy, which promotes public involvement in agricultural water management. In the future, promotion of public participation may influence water culture and create a sustainable collaborative relationship of irrigation management among stakeholders.

Palliative care emergencies are both cancer and non-cancer-related events that demand immediate remedy or action because they cause acute exacerbation of symptoms that affect quality of life. Decision-making with regard to the type of treatment for these emergencies is critical and should be based on (a) reversibility of the problem, (b) improvement/maintenance of the patient’s quality of life with reversal, (c) the patient’s general condition and prognosis, (d) patient and family goals, and (e) the risk and benefit of treatment versus distress of symptoms.
