Abstract:
We studied the environment for telemedicine in the Canary Islands. The population's attitude to telemedicine was surveyed in 503 questionnaire interviews with doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and patients on the seven islands. Almost half the respondents 46-50 across groups had a positive opinion of telemedicine. We also collected data about telephone medicine. A total of 479 medical-support telephone calls were made to four doctors, in psychiatry, ophthalmology and paediatrics. The telephone calls resolved the problem in 73 of cases and 86 would have come to the doctor if not made. Therapy

Both genetic and environmental factors can determine whether an invasive plant species will establish. We found that genotype strongly influenced survivorship, but there was no significant effect of environment on survivorship. However, environmental conditions did significantly affect growth. AbstractIn 2014 the Island of El Hierro (Canary Islands) was declared a Geopark of the Unesco network, thus becoming the first UNESCO geopark of the Canary Islands. The geological history of the Island of El Hierro can be understood through the visit of 61 geosites, which are representative of the growth and destruction of an oceanic Island in an intraplate environment. The geological heritage represented by these geosites has as foremost exponents those related to the formation of mega-landslides and the formation of extensive fields of pahoehoe lava-flows related to the historical or prehistoric fissure volcanism concerning the activity of its three rifts. This chapter describes the methodology used in establishing the geosite inventory carried out in 2019, as well as the description of the established geosites.

AbstractThis chapter discusses the use of a learning environment instrument, the Place-Based Learning and Constructivist Environment Survey (PLACES) in an environmental studies program that operated out of British Columbia, Canada. In order to access information about students’ perceptions, the instrument was implemented in an Integrated Environmental Studies program called Experiential Studies 10 (ES 10) as part of a range of evaluation methods. The study was retrospective in nature utilizing a mixed method approach to determine the long-term effects of the program on participants’ citizenship activities. Our findings demonstrate that learning environment and citizenship outcomes were linked, and key learning environment features were identified as being important for long term outcomes of active citizenship. This chapter will provide a brief overview of the study and shed light on how paying close attention to the learning environment created within environmental education programming can contribute to long-term outcomes of active citizenship.

Original objectives and revisions The original objectives as stated in the approved proposal were: (1) To establish guidelines for the use of micrometeorological techniques as accurate, reliable and low-cost tools for continuous monitoring of whole canopy ET of common crops grown in large agricultural structures. (2) To adapt existing methods for protected cultivation environments. (3) To combine previously derived theoretical models of air flow and scalar fluxes in large agricultural structures (an outcome of our previous BARD project) with ET data derived from application of turbulent transp

Abstract:
The landscapes we see today in northern Canada are the results of the dynamics of former continental glaciations of the Quaternary. As the environment evolved with the cyclic growth and decay of ice sheets, it is paramount to understand the history of these glacial cycles to provide a robust framework for geological and environmental studies. Much is known about these glaciations in southern Canada, but in northern Canada, extensive regions remain poorly studied because of their remoteness and hence knowledge of past glaciations there remains somewhat limited. Abstract:
Natural hazard threats occur in areas of the built environment where buildings, people, and related financial assets are exposed to the physical effects of earth system processes that have a potential to cause damage, injuries, losses, and related socioeconomic disruption. As cities, towns, and villages continue to expand and densify in response to the pressures of urban growth and development, so too do the levels of exposure and susceptibility to natural hazard threat. While our understanding of natural hazard processes has increased significantly over the last few decades, the ability to as

Abstract:
The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) is a partnership between Western University and ImpactWx that aims to better detect tornado occurrence throughout Canada, improve severe and extreme weather prediction, mitigate against damage to people and property and investigate future implications due to climate change. Western University also collaborates with Environment and Climate Change Canada, the University of Manitoba, and several international universities on this Project. Background Transplanting vegetable seedlings to final spacing in the greenhouse is common practice. At the time of transplanting, the transpiring leaf area is a small fraction of the ground area and its cooling effect is rather limited. A preliminary modeling study suggested that if water supply from root to canopy is not limiting, a sparse crop could maintain about the same canopy temperature as a mature crop, at the expense of a considerably higher transpiration flux per leaf (and root) area. The objectives of this project were (1) to test the predictions of the model, (2) to select suitable

Interdepartmental Memorandum of Understanding (IMOU) 5170 between Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN), the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and Transport Canada Innovation Centre (TC-IC) aims to gain new insight into slow-moving landslides, and the influence of climate change, through testing conventional and emerging monitoring technologies. IMOU 5107 focuses on strategically important sections of the national railway network in the Thompson River valley, British Columbia (BC), and the Assiniboine River valley along the borders of Manitoba (MN) and Saskatchewan (SK).
