Abstract:
Background: Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of mortality worldwide. The three leading cancers in India are cervical cancer, breast cancer and upper aerodigestive tract carcinoma. Cervical carcinoma is the 2nd most common cancer in women next to breast carcinoma. This study has been done to assess the knowledge, causation and preventive methods about the common cancers in India amongst Medical and Nursing students in a tertiary care center in rural Kerala. Preventive measures and early diagnosis of cancer can lead to decrease in mortality and morbidity. This can be achieved by creating awareness. A special emphasis has been made regarding cervical cancer and HPV vaccination in this study. Methods: A total of 337 medical and 148 nursing students from 1st year to final year were included in this study and the results were analysed by descriptive statistics. Results: Out of 337 medical and 148 nursing students, there was significant difference in knowledge between pretest/posttest and amongst the medical/nursing students. Medical students were found be more aware about the cancer, their causation and preventive methods as compared to the nursing students. 76.4% of nursing students were aware about the role of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) in the causation of cervical cancer pretest. 98.6% of nursing students were aware about the role of HPV in causation of cervical cancer posttest following a short lecture. Following a short lecture both medical and nursing students were found to have more awareness. Conclusions: Creating awareness to the medical and nursing students who are intouch with the community and the patients is essential. Targeted health education in very important in creating a great impact about the knowledge of cancer in the community, thereby leading to decrease in mortality and morbidity.

Abstract:
Background: Early recognition of oral cancer is essential for higher cure rate and better prognosis. Nurses can play a significant role in the early diagnosis of cancers. The study aimed to assess the awareness of oral cancer among nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among Bachelor of Nursing Students at College of Nursing, B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect the sociodemographic data and awareness of cancer. Descriptive statistics were calculated using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 22.0. Results: Out of 116, 89 (76.7%) students were of age 21-25 years. One hundred and twelve students (96.6%) were aware that various form of tobacco increases risk of oral cancer; however, only 55 (47.4%) students knew alcohol drinking as a risk factor. Only 29 (25.0%) students were aware of loose-fitting denture as a risk factor for oral cancer. Ninety-six (82.8%) students knew white or red patch as possible signs of oral cancer; however, only six (5.2%) students were aware of the most common site of oral cancer. Only 16 (13.8%) students considered that they are adequately trained to screen oral cancer. One hundred and fifteen (99.1%) students demanded more education on oral cancer. Conclusions: This study revealed that nursing students’ awareness of risk factors and the importance of screening of oral cancer is suboptimal. It highlights a need for basic education on oral cancer to make them more aware and further competent toward oral cancer screening and referral.

Abstract:
Background: Colorectal cancer patients with colostomy have various complaints about changes in their life including the need for comprehensive and personal care. Ostomy nurses are responsible for managing people with a colostomy, and this particular nursing practice continues to develop globally. Also, previous literature highlights the importance of caregiver’s support, particularly family in colostomy patient care.Purpose: This study aimed to explore the family experience of colorectal cancer patients toward colostomy nursing careMethods: The study design used was descriptive phenomenology to explore the experience of ten participants through in-depth interviews. The participants were selected using purposive sampling with the inclusion criteria: family members of colorectal cancer patients with colostomy, over 21 years old, and able to communicate verbally. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. Results: The results revealed three themes related to the family’s experience: (1) positive and negative behavior in nursing care, (2) living with a colostomy, (3) expectations for nursing care. The findings showed that the families were happy with the ostomy nursing care though some aspects needed to be improved. However, colorectal cancer patients experienced some difficulties in living with a colostomy. Conclusion: The study concluded that the colostomy nursing care still needs to be improved. This study recommends the ostomy nurses to improve their nursing care, especially in terms of skills, responsiveness, and awareness.

Abstract:
The goal of this study is to describe and understand humanistic nursing that is tailored to the needs of young men (18–39 years) with cancer. Eight young men with cancer (n = 8, average age = 28 years) were interviewed individually. Two themes emerged from the interviews: (1) trust between nurse and patient is paramount; and (2) this patient population has needs that are not currently being met through the humanistic nursing approach. The results of the iterative qualitative analysis of the data suggest that humanistic nursing tailored to young men with cancer should address their need to express their feelings, to be active and to receive psychological support.
