Abstract:
Thesis (MScMedSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a multifactorial disorder, with substantial evidence for a genetic contribution. Although genetic association studies have been conducted to identify vulnerability factors in PTSD, the results remain largely inconsistent. Identifying ligands of proteins that are involved in the aetiology of PTSD represents a means of delineating the network of interactions that may play a role in the development of the disorder. Numerous animal studies have identified the Wolframin protein (WFS1)

Although more women are successfully breaching the social, economic and political barriers that can prevent them from participating as electoral candidates, few women campaign for elected office. A dearth of female candidates may be understandable, given research demonstrating that women tend to avoid competition and competitive environments. Thus, elections – competitive by design – may attract fewer women than men. This thesis posits that the inherent competitiveness of electoral politics may deter women from campaigning for office. However, this work also forwards that competitive sport soc

Thesis (MSc (Biochemistry))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The ostrich industry in South Africa is currently threatened by respiratory disease in feedlot ostriches which causes a dramatic loss in production. Ms01, Ms02 and Ms03 were identified as the three ostrichspecific mycoplasmas to be associated with this respiratory disease in ostriches of South Africa. The ostrich-specific mycoplasmas have a major impact on ostrich production and for this reason there is a serious need for treatment for these infections. For this reason, the ostrich industry has undertaken

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to use elements for developing teacher identity, personal philosophy, beliefs about teaching and learning, and reflection to frame an examination of the effect of Positive-Attitude Cues (PACs) on teacher candidates’(n = 135) mathematics anxiety and expressive writing. Participants were randomly assigned to a treatment (PACs) or control group (No-PAC) and their dispositions about mathematics were examined using the Revised Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS-R); which had a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.96 and an expressive writing task before and after the intervention

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Progressive familial heart block type I (PFHBI) is a cardiac ventricular conduction disorder of unknown cause associated with risk of sudden death, which has been described in several South African families. Clinically, PFHBI is characterised by right bundle branch block on ECG, which may progress to complete heart block, necessitating pacemaker implantation. The disease shows an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance with evidence of genetic anticipation. Using genetic linkage analysis, the PFHBI-causative gene was map
