Abstract:
At the Istituto Ricovero Cura Carattere Scientifico, Ospedale Maggiore di Milano, Italy, Candida pelliculosa accounted for 3.3 and 4.4 % of all Candida species other than Candida albicans collected during 1996 and 1998, respectively. Genetic variability was investigated by electrophoretic karyotyping and inter-repeat PCR, and the susceptibility to five antifungal agents of 46 strains isolated from 37 patients during these 2 years was determined. Combination of the two typing methods yielded 14 different DNA types. Although the majority of DNA types were randomly distributed among different uni

Catheter-associated bloodstream infections (CABSIs) and catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) are significant causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The current practice favors the removal of vascular access devices (VADs); however, the evidence on this topic remains inconclusive. This study evaluates the clinical outcomes in terms of in-hospital mortality and catheter retention vs. removal in CABSI and CRBSI cases. A retrospective, observational, single-center study was conducted at Luigi Sacco Hospital, Milan, Italy (May 2021–December 2023), and it analyzed non-ICU adult pat

This paper offers a new perspective on vernacular literature in Milan in the 1430s, when Duke Filippo Maria Visconti commissioned from the humanists of his court vernacular translations of ancient histories and commentaries on Dante’s Comedy and Petrarch’s Canzoniere. These works, often dismissed as courtly products, were part of an ambitious cultural project that was carried out by humanists like Filippo Maria’s secretary Pier Candido Decembrio and Guini-forte Barzizza, but their attitude toward the duke’s commissions betrays their uneasiness with vernacular literature. It was the duke of Mil

Abstract Purpose Candida auris, an emerging multidrug-resistant yeast, has been reported worldwide. In Italy, the first case was reported in 2019. We describe the first case of C. auris, imported from Greece, in Milan, using whole genome sequencing to characterise mutations associated with antifungal resistance. Case presentation On October 2022 an 80-year-old Italian man was hospitalised in Greece. In the absence of clinical improvement, the patient was transferred to our hospital, in Italy, where blood culture resulted positive for C. auris. Despite therapy, the patient died of septic shock.

In September 1955, John Kenneth Galbraith encountered British Labour Party MP Richard Crossman at a conference hall in Milan, Italy. They went there with a clear mission: to defend their parties’ achievements from expected attacks by Friedrich Hayek and other “reactionaries” at the conference. In public, they confidently boasted about the records of the Democratic and Labour governments in prosperity, full employment, and social and welfare programs during the past decades. In private talks, however, they were less confident—and more candid. “Both the American liberal and the British socialist
