Abstract:
The team of “variable geometry”, formed by Candilis, Josic and Woods, played an important role in the European architecture of the sixties. Along with large residential projects, much of the production of the team were projects of universities. The team was the winner in the competition for the Free University of Berlin, they also built the Faculty of Arts at Toulouse le Mirail. The Berlin project is an extensible system embedded in the district of Dahlem, formed by an orthogonal network of footpaths, with four main corridors that define three stripes, crossed transversely by secondary corridors. A three-dimensional frame is defined by the interweaving of the main and secondary corridors, the interior spaces and the courtyards. The flexible and extensible project condition, was translated to the construction field, where it was instrumental the collaboration with Jean Prouvé who proposed the building construction through a triple system of prefabrication. As in Berlin, the plant of the University of Toulouse is defined as a rectangle organized by a strict structural grid, with a greater width and six main corridors. The four cross corridors become more important connecting the building with the car parks provided to the east and the existing park in the west. The project for the University of Toulouse had less impact than the one of Berlin, whose accuracy and consistency between the general approach and building systems are missing in Toulouse, where more conventional and economical methods were used and where, as in Berlin, the original project was never completed.

Abstract:
The Cité de l’Etoile, in Bobigny, design by Candilis Josic and Woods (1954–1963) is one of the housing estates, results of the french national competition named opération Million. Commissioned by Emmaüs, the 737 homes are a kind of synthesis of the experiments of Candilis in Marocco and the city planning thinking of the team. The demolition planned in 2008 has been avoided and the Cité de l’Etoile has been labelled 20th century heritage. The rehabilitation project brings to light the contradictions of an highly conflicting situation. Between blind demolition and a well-thought out project of restoration the question of the safeguard of collective social housing complex of the second half of the 20th century is still waiting solutions.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to reveal the potentials of &ldquo
Web&rdquo
as a system of achitectural organization. This concept developed by Georges Candilis, Alexis Josic, and Shadrach Woods can be seen as a product of the discourse arose in 1960s, which concieves the city as a continuous and dynamic structure rather than a static entity composed of individual buildings. In this sense, Web appears as a system of architectural organization that responds to this dynamism by enabling growth and change. In this thesis, Frankfurt-Rö
merberg Competition Project by Candilis-Josic-Woods (CJW) is analyzed to understand the potential of Web in organizing both physical and social relations. Revealing the potentials of Web requires examination of other concepts introduced by Candilis-Josic-Woods. Therefore, the relationship between Web and its sources (casbah and bidonville) and precedents (habitat é
volutif and Stem) will be constructed. In order to construct this relation and to understand how Web operates as a system of architectural organization, the components and design acts of Web as well as its potentials will be analyzed in the case of Frankfurt-Rö
merberg Project. In doing so, the project will be seen as the main prototype of Web. The thesis will also put emphasis on habitat é
volutif as the main idea behind Web. It will be argued that habitat é
volutif evolved into Web with the help of stem as a connecting element.
