The etiology of included canine has multifactorial origin and its early diagnosis and the use of simple diagnostic methods such as visual inspection, palpation and x-rays are part of a correct management of these dental elements unerupted. The prognosis of orthodontic traction is dependent on the position of the canine in relation to neighbors, as well as its height in the alveolar process associated with this moving these to risks such as ankylosis, discoloration, root canal, root resorption and loss of attached gingiva. The treatment to be adopted may vary according to the age of the individual and acceptance of same as well as the canine position and malocclusion involved. The procedures to be adopted may vary from extracting the deciduous element, surgical exposure followed by orthodontic traction of the retained element, autogenous, extracting the element retained or even no treatment.

The objective of this thesis is to consider a general and current overview of impacted maxillary canines and treatment options. Impacted canines can be defined as a failure in eruption, resulting from several factors and general or local conditions, in which the canine remains inside the jaw beyond that period. It affects about 2% of the population. However, in most cases, it is asymptomatic, being the diagnosis an occasional find, clinical or radiographic. The early diagnosis can prevent future complications and shorten the treatment time, complexity and cost. Diagnosis is based on clinical history, clinical and radiological examinations. Due to the functional importance and aesthetic of canine teeth, the treatment requires a cautious approach and multidisciplinary interaction of professionals from different areas. Treatment options include abstention from treatment, interceptive treatment, extraction of the impacted canine, replacement of the canine in the arch by surgical exposure or surgical-orthodontic traction and autograft. All therapeutic options have their indications, advantages and disadvantages, and it is the clinician’s responsibility to define the best, considering the case, and to determine if the patient is eligible. Literature search was conducted from 1993 to 2014, using PubMed, ScienceDirect, SciELO and Cochrane Library; literature relevant to this review as books and monographs were researched at the Universidade Fernando Pessoa, at the Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad Complutense and at the Faculdade de MedicinaDentária da Universidade do Porto. The keywords used were impacted canines, canine impactions, impacted tooth and ectopic canine.

Full textIn order to promote health and reduce the risk of diseases, pet nutrition has evolved in a similar way to human, in the search for functional foods. In this sense, Saccharomyces cerevisiaa are yeasts with high prebiotic capacity, since they stimulate the production of substances with immunostimulatory properties and increase the capacity to prevent the colonization of pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. However, its composition and production process determine the ability to act, based on the substrate and medium in which it was nourished. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of increasing levels of yeast with active metabolites (YAM), based on the fermentation of specific substrates, on the apparent digestibility of dietary nutrients, fecal fermentation products, microbiota, and immunological parameters of adult dogs. Eighteen adult healthy male and female dogs with a mean body weight of 15.8 ± 7.37 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design consisting of three experimental treatments: CD (control diet), YAM 0.3 (control diet with 0.3% of yeasts with active metabolites) and YAM 0.6 (control diet with 0.6% of yeasts with active metabolites). The mean of the obtained results were compared by the Tukey test (p<0,05) in the SAS. It can be verified that the inclusion of the additive altered the apparent digestibility of crude fiber, crude protein, nitrogen free extract and metabolizable energy (p<0.05). Regarding the fermentation products, they were not affected by the prebiotic (P>0.05). The phagocytosis index was higher in the diets YAM 0.3 and YAM 0.6 (P<0.05). At the dosages of YAM 0.3 and 0.6, fecal concentrations of Prevotela, Allobaculum, Fusobacterium reduced and Clostridium increased (p<0.05). Collinsela increased with LMA 0.6 (p<0.05). Blautia tended to increase with YAM 0.3 and 0.6 and Lactobacillus with YAM 0.3 (p<0.10). According to the inclusion levels and the parameters evaluated in this study, the additive may present a possible effect on innate and nonspecific immunity and promote modest changes in the fecal microbiota of healthy adult dogs.

It was verified that the ultrasound image of the longitudinal plan of the medial meniscus is more easily accessed than the lateral one, because a rupture in the medial meniscus was possible to be viewed. Longitudinal caudal and transversal caudal intra-articular plans presented better viewing of the menisci and higher correlation index and consonance with the images of the inserted menisci. Several factors may hinder the correct eruption of the canines, leading to impaction, however, due to their importance, there is a great interest in carrying out their traction, however, inaccurate diagnosis and treatment plans based on 2D images have been responsible for failures reported in the literature . This work investigated the influence of the biomodel in the clinical planning of canines included, through two questionnaires answered by orthodontists, the first one after evaluating a clinical case of included canines through radiographic examinations and the other after analyzing the same clinical case through the biomodel image 3D. The study included orthodontists registered in the CRO-PB, 75% female, 51.7% aged 40 years or less, with a dental degree of 15 years or less (53.4%) and time Postgraduate course of 8 years or less (57.6%). 98.3% answered that the presented biomodel helped to clarify the case better, 96.7% answered that the biomodel brings more safety in the indication of treatment, we did not find statistically significant differences between the two situations regarding the degree of difficulty of the case, in Significant differences were observed between the prognosis of the presented case when comparing the responses of the participants without and with the use of biomodels, regarding the treatment option there were no significant changes when presenting the biomodel, however this change is observed when the question is asked about the Direction of traction. It was concluded that the biomodel provided a better clarification of the case and more safety at the time of indicating the treatment plan, as well as may influence the prognosis and initial direction in the cases of traction, however there were no significant changes in the type of treatment indicated to the case Nor in the degree of difficulty.

Full textIn the course of engaging in the occupation of dental surgeon, every practitioner will encounter the case of retained canine. This condition calls on cross-disciplinary knowledge around pathological anatomy, genetics, surgery and orthodontia as well as radiology. The practitioner will determine the aetiology of the retained canine in order to identify the different pathological causes responsible for the irruption of the retained canine. After having established the diagnosis, the practitioner will choose between several courses of treatment: either the surgical clearing of the receiving site of the canine while keeping the tooth alive or by pulpotomy, allowing a spontaneous irruption or through a surgical-orthodondic setup with the positioning of an arch. and in cases with poor prognosis and no other viable treatment. Included canines are a pathology found in dental clinics requiring in relation to the age of the patient, a treatment plan decided by the dentist. The objective of this work is to identify the pathogenesis of the canines included and to choose the therapeutic decision adapted to the clinical case presented by the patient. The doctor should therefore mobilize all his knowledge to properly learn how to proceed with the treatment of the included canine.

Full textThe permanent canines play an important role in both teeth for aesthetic and functional reasons. The teeth follow a favorable eruption sequence in the development of normal occlusion, but some disturbance of this mechanism, in this transition period of the mixed dentition for permanent, can lead to changes in sequence or even in the eruption path, resulting in impacted teeth. Are the permanent maxillary canine, after the third molars that present the most commonly impacted. In the impossibility of early diagnosis, one should replace the tooth in the dental arch avoiding its extraction, given its importance in the balance, harmony and function of the dental arch. In undiagnosed or inadequately treated may occur mechanical, infectious or neoplastic disorders. Prognosis depends on the canine's position relative to adjacent structures and the possibility of orthodontic movement. This paper discusses the main factors to be considered in cases of impacted permanent maxillary canine, such as eruption process, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and mainly associated pathologies included canines.

Full textThe problem of included canines is a very common situation, because it affects a relevant part of the population in society where the concerns with oral health and the aesthetics of the smile is increasing, never forgetting its functional significance that must be secured every time as possible. This fact leads to the situation that every dentist, sooner or later, will be dealing with this diagnosis during his professional course. An early diagnosis is the key both to the effectiveness of the treatment process as well for the most correct choice of the therapeutical option, in way to minimize the possible side effects that can occur. The interceptive approach in included canines consists in the evaluation of the position of the lateral incisive that must be verified because these teeth can be on the position of the canine, causing its incorrect eruption. In the cases that the interceptive approach is not possible, after the 14 years old of age, if its verified in the patient a delay or an inclusion of the deciduous canine, a corrective approach must take place in manner to avoid an incorrect eruption of the teeth. With this dissertation, the objective is to analyse the process of diagnosis of included canines, as well as the different therapeutical options.

Full textUsually, the last teeth to erupt are those that remain included or semi-included, after the third molars, the canine is the element that suffers the most impactation. The eruption of the canines is of extreme importance, since the retention of this tooth compromises the esthetics, occlusal function and phonetics of the patient. The prevalence is more common in the female genus and in the palatal region. Along the path of eruption, there are some factors, such as: lack of space, traumas or even the theory of genetics, so the canine can suffer impaction and must be diagnosed as soon as possible to receive the correct treatment. The diagnosis will be based on a clinical examination and a radiographic examination, to observe the degree of impaction and its correct location. Dental impactions can cause some disturbances in the development of occlusion, eventually compromising some adjacent teeth and structures, such as: root resorption of the lateral incisors, bone loss, gingival recession, cysts and others. It is essential that the Dentist is aware of this condition, both for the early diagnosis and for the use of the appropriate technique to obtain clinical success, since there are techniques of treatment that can solve the problem, among them: the exposure of the crown surgically, and then orthodontic traction. For the success of the treatment is essential the collaboration of the user, being aware of the prognosis and the risk factors.

Full textThis document concerns the report of clinical activities implemented in the Dental Clinic of Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Viseu, in the period from 16th September 2013 to 30th May 2014. This report aims to describe the clinical acts carried out during the fifth year in various clinical units available, as well as to report in detail the procedures and/or clinical conditions considered differentiated, both for their frequency and specificity. The importance of clinical experience is due to the fact that we become fully capable and independent, following the end of this course of study. Clinical teaching units allow the articulation between the theoretical knowledge acquired over the years, and the practice "in situ" with patients in the various areas of intervention of dentistry. Patients are, according to the reason for consultation, stratified and forwarded to the different existing clinical areas, which are held on different days of the week, allowing a more effective approach to the patients, comprising the diagnosis, the treatment plan and the follow-up. In total 76 patients have been observed, of whom 39 were observed as operator. The clinical area with the largest number of attendances was the Removable Prosthesis. On the contrary, areas such as Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics are areas with greater shortage of patients. This may result from the current and biased demographic characterization of the Portuguese population, but also because of the greater availability of temporal older population. Clinical procedures such as surgical removal of an included transmigrated canine, pulp treatment of primary teeth with necrotic pulp, tooth approach widely destroyed in Operative Dentistry and surgical approach to HIV positive patient, were reported and substantiated The clinical approach of each patient allows the appropriateness of individual treatment plans, which take into account their socio-economic context and adapting the modalities of treatment. Therefore, not always the treatment takes into account the best clinical option but the treatment that the patient can do. variables such as age, anatomical characteristics of the patient, presence of systemic diseases, medication, as well as previous dental treatments without success, influence the treatment plan.

Full textNowadays the dental practitioner frequently faces situations of canine inclusion. As the canine is a fundamental element which contributes to the development of an harmonious dental and facial asthetics, as well as mastication, it becomes necessary to study approaches that can solve this condition. Multidisciplinary procedures have been developed using Orthodontics, Surgery, Periodonthology, Destistry. The goal of this review is to study and compare two techniques used in the traction of included canines, which are the open and closed approaches. In the open technique the canine is exposed, the surgical area is isolated with a periodontal covering and then an orthodontic device is installed to enable the dental traction. As for the closed technique, it comprises the surgical exposure and instalation of the orthodontic device in the same appointment, then proceeding to close and suture the flap. The choice of the technique it’s based upon certain criteria such as bucal-palatine loction, amount of keratinised tissue in the inclusion site and the mesial-distal and vertical position of the canine’s crown. There’s some controversy between the authors in which technique to use, therefore I relied upon their studies to expose the advantages, disavantages, indications, and protocols of each technique to get a better understanding of the subject. There are several traction appliances to choose from aswell. In the sixties orthodontists used a circunferencial, ligature wire around the cervical area of the tooth, however the manifestation of periodontal issues, aswell as the evolution of the adhesive systems lead to the development of traction appliances and the use of chains.

Full textThe permanent maxillary canines have a long and difficult eruption path, starting from its initial formation to its final eruption position. Consequently, they are very susceptible to deviations of etiological genetic, environmental or local factors. When alluding to erupting deviations, literature brings up several cases of the permanent canine inclusion. These medical problems are very common, requiring a multidisciplinary approach in its diagnosis and treatment. The knowledge and understanding of the normal standards established for the different stages of deciduous dentition growth and development, both mixed and permanent, are of an enormous importance for a proper diagnosis and medical treatment success. When these problems are diagnosed or treated improperly, it can result in severe developmental problems, such as malocclusions, resorption of adjacent teeth, cyst formation, infections and aesthetic problems.

Cancer is a highly complex disease to understand, because it entails multiple cellular physiological systems. Current first-line treatments for most cancers include chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical excision. However, these treatments have limited efficacy by drug resistance and the toxicity to healthy tissues and organs, resulting in deleterious and sometimes fatal side effects for the patient. Besides, most chemotherapeutic drugs for treating cancer patients are poorly soluble in aqueous media. For all these factors, specific target identification, usually expressed within a given tumor type, has been an active area of research. The development of a target delivery system for effective clinical application of these hydrophobic agents has become a focus in cancer therapy. Drug targeting can potentially be achieved by conjugation of targeting ligands onto drug delivery at the nanoscale (nanocarriers) systems to achieve selective delivery to the tumour cell or the tumour vasculature. One leading class of nanoparticles for the delivery of small-molecule drugs involves the use of linear cyclodextrin-based polymers (CDPs). Cyclodextrins are ciclic oligosaccharides with several pharmaceutical applications. They present a central hidrophobic cavity, whose structure allows the formation of stable inclusion complexes with many drugs. They have been extensively applied in cancer therapy to improve the solubility, dissolution, stability and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs. In this sense, this review assembly intended to evaluate the advantage of cyclodextrins as carrier and the efficacy and the potential therapeutic use of systems using cyclodextrins as drug carriers for tumor treatment.
