Abstract:

Canadian music is almost completely absent from university-level textbooks used in this country, most of which are published in the United States. Canadian content typically is added to a music history survey course, if at all, at the end of the chronological account. This article argues for a different approach, one in which Canadian content is integrated into the survey course from the medieval era to the present day. Introductory courses in ethnomusicology could also include Canadian music materials at many different points.

Abstract This article deals with recent Danish literature in the light of the discussion about canons occasioned by the publication of the two ministerial canons: Undervisningskanon (Educational Canon, 2004) and Kulturkanon (Cultural Canon, 2006). The article argues that recent Danish literature challenges traditional work categories and the concept of the author on which the two canons are based, and discusses which works and texts in recent Danish literature ought to belong to a future canon.

Abstract:
Canons—of music, video games, or people—can provide a shared pool of resources for scholars, practitioners, and fans; but the formation of canons can also lead to an obscuring or devaluing of materials and people outside of a canon. The four authors in this colloquy interrogate issues of canons relating to video game music and sound from a variety of perspectives. Each author considers an aspect of canonization and argues for a wider purview. In “Rewritable Memory: Concerts, Canons, and Game Music History,” William Gibbons examines the ways in which concerts of video game music may create canons and reinforce particular historical narratives. In “On Canons as Music and Muse,” Julianne Grasso views the music originally presented in a video game as itself a type of canon and argues that official and fan arrangements of original game music may provide windows into lived experiences of play. In “The Difficult, Uncomfortable, and Imperative Conversations Needed in Game Music and Sound Studies,” Hyeonjin Park highlights issues of diversity and representation in the field of video game music and sound studies, with respect to the people and music that make up the subjects of the field, the people who produce scholarship in the field, and the people who engage with game music and sound. In “Canon Anxiety?” Karen Cook pulls together various issues of academic canons to question the scope, focus, and diversity of the growing field in which the Journal of Sound and Music in Games exists.

Abstract:
To understand the transformation of canons and the struggle with them, we may productively explore fanfiction, a particular reader's, viewer's, and author's practice, within non-professional and non-commercial texts based on the plots and heroes of other people's works. Fanfiction is a paradoxical phenomenon: it is wholly based on a specific canon — collectively selected film and literary texts, moves by worship, emotional attachment, and attention, while initially working as a criticism of the canons and changing the canons. Canon is not only a research concept but also an intra-cultural designation of the original work as the basis of a fan text. Fans also create their canon — “fanon”, a set of characteristic plot solutions and ways to change characters established in fanfiction. The article examines the intersections of the cultural canon of high and popular culture, the national literary canon, and the canon and the fanon in the understanding of fans with different types of attitudes to the canons — disintegration, transformation, struggle, re-creation. The argument is based on a critical analysis of the research literature with a focus on metaphors that help authors describe the relationship of fiction writers with the canons and on the experience of empirical research about fanfiction devoted to samples of popular culture (“Harry Potter” franchise, “Doctor Who” series, “Sherlock” series, and others), fanfiction and sequels to novels by Jane Austen, the British writer of the 19th century, and fanfiction devoted to Russian classical literature.

The article’s focus is to identify and theoretically present canons that are specific generalizations about the assessment and rehabilitation area constituted by early childhood development support. It refers to the following interdisciplinary theoretical concepts and empirical analyses: positive psychology, pedagogical personalism, optimal functioning theory, developmental task concept, and social support theory. In the light of the above concepts and analyses, the following canons become theoretically and empirically anchored: (1) a happy childhood canon, (2) a subjective treatment canon, (3) a safe environment canon, (4) a developmental success canon, and (5) an intervention professionalism canon. Their framing suggests that there exist already substantial resources in this area that make it possible to systematize this stage of human development  considered the most precious one  that is the period from birth to 6 years of age.

Abstract:
This article applies the processes of canon formation suggested by Philip V. Bohlman in The Study of Folk Music in the Modern World to the historiography of popular music. Bohlman distinguishes between at least three different types of folk music canon: a small group canon, a mediated canon and an imagined canon. Adjusting Bohlman's ideas to the case of popular music, a reformulation is proposed in the form of an alternative canon, a mainstream canon, and a prescribed canon. The unstable power relations implied by the juxtaposition of different canons are considered, as well as the cumulative aspect of canon formation. The article also looks for each type of canon in the media through which historical knowledge is transmitted, and considers the tendency to narrate the historiography of marginal musics with more ephemeral media than the printed word.

Abstract:
Abstract The canon is a concept with a long history. The religious canon was eventually re-established on secular grounds, where it was comprehended in the categories of official literary (general) and personal (individual) canons, educational canon (reading lists) being correlated to the concept of tradition (canon as selective tradition) and the classics (canon as synchronicity, the classics as diachronicity). These aspects have different features in each national literature, particularly in Ukrainian literature. The necessity of standards and hierarchical classifications remains important after postmodernism, when new concepts, such as corps, collection, postcanon, succeed or keep up with the concept of the canon.

Abstract:
Current accounts – and particularly the critique – of canon formation are primarily based on some form of identity politics. In the 20th century a representational model of social identities replaced cultivation as the primary means to democratize the canons of the fine arts. In a parallel development, the discourse on canons has shifted its focus from processes of inclusion to those of exclusion. This shift corresponds, on the one hand, to the construction of so-called alternative canons or counter-canons, and, on the other hand, to attempts to restore the authority of canons considered to be in a state of crisis or decaying. Regardless of the democratic stance of these efforts, the construction of alternatives or the reestablishment of decaying canons does not seem to achieve their aims, since they break with the explicit and implicit rules of canon formation. Politically motivated attempts to revise or restore a specific canon make the workings of canon formation too visible, transparent and calculated, thereby breaking the spell of its imaginary character. Retracing the history of the canonization of the fine arts reveals that it was originally tied to the disembedding of artists and artworks from social and worldly affairs, whereas debates about canons of the fine arts since the end of the 20th century are heavily dependent on their social, cultural and historical reembedding. The latter has the character of disenchantment, but has also fettered the canon debate in notions of “our” versus “their” culture. However, by emphasizing the dedifferentiation of contemporary processes of culturalization, the advancing canonization of popular culture seems to be able to break with identity politics that foster notions of “our” culture in the present thinking on canons, and push it in a more transgressive, syncretic or hybrid direction.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of creating the first-ever camera museum by using unique building forms and structural elements, as well as water and light features. Additionally, throughout this thesis project, I would like to celebrate the Canon franchise with all the camera enthusiasts and express my personal appreciation to Canon camera who has always been a companion in my entire architecture journey. The building site, shape and location allow a discovery of the building elements and shape consequently while participating in the building visit. From far beyond, the building can be seen as a simple sculpture piece as an iconic gateway of this Canon Park. While approaching and pursuing the passage into the museum, building shape and components start to build the experience more than just a museum. Different lighting conditions, vertical and horizontal circulation methods, building form and structure are used to direct not only the journey of Canon camera, but also an experiment of my own architectural language.

Abstract:
Throughout our teacher education, we have seen and felt the need for suitable literature in the English courses for upper secondary education in Sweden. Our purpose was to investigate which literature teachers in the field are using in their different courses, and with that constitute a list that can be used by teachers. Furthermore, we also investigated, among other things, which qualities the teachers are looking for when choosing suitable literature for their students and courses. Previous research has shown the significance of using literature for language and cultural development, and therefore a list as ours can contribute to aiding upper secondary teachers. To execute this research, we have chosen to use both a qualitative and quantitative method, in the form of a survey and interviews. Our results showed that all teachers are using some sort of literature for language development, and the vast majority are having difficulties finding suitable literature for their students. Moreover, the vast majority of our interviewees took a negative stand towards having an official canon, however they were open for using an unofficial canon as inspiration.

Abstract:
The problem of the Literary Canon is stated by the Romanian theorist Virgil Nemoianu several times and from different critical perspectives of the time – each perspective is seeking to reflect an era and its influences, a certain cultural and artistic typology, the cultural projects and products of a canonical era, the spirituality and politics of the time, as well as the ideological disputes that re-establish from one century to another great canonical European literatures. Systematized thematically and through editorials published between 1967 and 2011, the Romanian professor’s concerns related to the canon are written with great precision – enlightening philological and historical details. Into the same unison with the educated voices of the great universities in Europe and America, Virgil Nemoianu will start the discussion about the phenomenology of the literary Canon by using the tools of referring to the European literary details and referring to the European cultural studies. As a framework, within his academic concerns, there is the idea of complexities and cultural continuities, which together with the ideas of aesthetic and moral emergences, both creates veritable encyclopedic studies that the Romanian theorist he dedicated to Minor European Romanticism, then to Structuralism, and finally to Postmodernism and cultural Globalism. By discussing the importance of the canonical lists, as well as by proposing provocative ideas supposed to aim at the correct understanding of the academic curriculum, Virgil Nemoianu initiates a debate that even gives us the opportunity to discuss the cultural phenomena that determine the modification of the canon. In particular, the Romanian professor gives interest to a canon in perpetual transformation – The Hospitable Canon – a hospitable canon, which involves transitions from a rigidity of the interpretation of literature – to an interpretive plurality. Therefore, these methodological filters have a catalytic role, becoming reagents that lead to a new interpretive synthesis. They also manage to lead to the theoretical core of Professor V. Nemoianu’s reflections: the canon and canonicity allow the observation of the secondary, the marginal, the interdependencies and the intertextualism within the canonical literatures – towards to redefine the social, art and spirituality.

Abstract:
In his research on the anonymous Old Bulgarian Canon for Pentecost, Georgi Popov concludes that the canon was composed by a disciple of Sts. Cyril and Methodius during the preparation of the Slavic hymnographical repertoire for the movable liturgical calendar. The rendering of the little yus through two consecutive verses – one for the vocal [e] and the other for the nasal component – is a unique feature not attested in another acrostic and proves that the work was originally written in Glagolitic script. A comparison between the vertical and the horizontal text in these parts of the canon shows an ambivalent meaning of the sign Ⱔ which was used here both as only a nasal index and as the whole little yus. Therefore, the work was created at a transitional stage in the development of the Glagolitic script. The placement of these observations in the context of the scholarly literature on the Glagolitic script (especially Boryana Velcheva’s studies) allows us to conclude that the Old Bulgarian canon for Pentecost is written in Northeastern Bulgaria.

Kolomiiets, Viacheslav. Ballet Art of Soviet Ukraine from the Late 1910s to the Early 1930s: Classical Performances, Modern Intentions, Socialist Realism Canon. Intellectual Archive, April 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.32370/ia_2024_03_11.

Full text
Abstract:
The article conceptualizes the development of ballet art in Soviet Ukraine from the late 1910s to the early 1930s. The active use of ballets of classical heritage (Corsair, Futile Warning, Swan Lake, etc.) in the repertoire of opera theaters of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa and the penetration of modern features into the ballet stage (Flying Ballet) were demonstrated. It is noted that elements of modern dance were cultivated in the activities of private choreographic and theater studios. The collapse of modernism with the introduction of the method of socialist realism in art with a focus on ideology, nationalism, and partisanship is noted. It was concluded that the state of ballet art in Soviet Ukraine from the late 1910s to the early 1930s can be qualified as a transition from modernization intentions, which were not realized, to the gradual introduction of the socialist realist method of artistic creation as the only one officially recognized by the Soviet authorities.

Zheng, Wanzheng, and Jason Merret. Aerodynamic Survey of Novel eVTOL Configuration Using SU2. Illinois Center for Transportation, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36501/0197-9191/22-014.

Full text
Abstract:
This report summarizes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) geometries using the SU2 Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver. Geometries were generated based on the Smart Transportation Infrastructure Initiative (STII) Rappor 15th iteration with various rotor-installment solutions. It was found that although open rotors installed on an underwing pylon were superior to shrouded rotors installed in a canoe, the canoe configuration would provide more potential for improvement, and using a canoe door to cover the first rotor opening would reduce the drag experienced by the canoe case below that upon the rod case. Rotor doors were found to be most efficient in reducing drag of the canoe case: Average drag reduction with covering the first rotor and all rotors was 66 and 165 counts, respectively. Changing rotor distributions along the chordwise direction had minimal impact on drag reduction, and placing rotors along the spanwise direction was not advised due to the increase of the projected frontal area. Increasing canoe chord length did not have significant impact on drag reduction; and if rotor doors were implemented, increasing canoe size had negative impact on drag. Rounding rotor edges did not change the aerodynamic performance of the canoe case but promotes vertical air intake when running lifting fans. Drag received by the canoe parabolically correlated to rotor diameter, with 126 counts of drag if the rotor diameter was 0 and 377 counts if the rotor diameter was 2.95 ft. Fuselage and tail added an average 179 counts of drag, and thus the aforementioned differences were still significant in the scale of aerodynamic properties of the full configuration.
