Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper contributes to an ongoing debate on the syntactic status of oblique subject-like NPs in the ‘impersonal’ construction (of the type me-thinks) in Old Germanic. The debate is caused by the lack of canonical subject case marking in such NPs. It has been argued that these NPs are syntactic objects, but we provide evidence for their subject status, as in Modern Icelandic and Faroese. Thus, we argue that the syntactic status of the oblique subject-like NPs has not changed at all from object status to subject status, contra standard claims in the literature. Our evidence stems from Old Icelandic, but the analysis has implications for the other old Germanic languages as well. However, a change from non-canonical to canonical subject case marking (‘Nominative Sickness’) has affected all the Germanic languages to a varying degree.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To analyze if the nutritional status of children aged less than five years is related to the biological conditions of their mothers, environmental and socioeconomic factors, and access to health services and social programs.METHODS This cross-sectional population-based study analyzed 664 mothers and 790 children using canonical correlation analysis. Dependent variables were characteristics of the children (weight/age, height/age, BMI/age, hemoglobin, and retinol serum levels). Independent variables were those related to the mothers’ nutritional status (BMI, hemoglobin, and retinol serum levels), age, environmental and socioeconomic factors and access to health service and social programs. A < 0.05 significance level was adopted to select the interpreted canonical functions (CF) and ± 0.40 as canonical load value of the analyzed variables.RESULTS Three canonical functions were selected, concentrating 89.9% of the variability of the relationship among the groups. In the first canonical function, weight/age (-0.73) and height/age (-0.99) of the children were directly related to the mother’s height (-0.82), prenatal appointments (-0.43), geographical area of the residence (-0.41), and household incomeper capita (-0.42). Inverse relationship between the variables related to the children and people/room (0.44) showed that the larger the number of people/room, the poorer their nutritional status. Rural residents were found to have the worse nutritional conditions. In the second canonical function, the BMI of the mother (-0.48) was related to BMI/age and retinol of the children, indicating that as women gained weight so did their children. Underweight women tended to have children with vitamin A deficiency. In the third canonical function, hemoglobin (-0.72) and retinol serum levels (-0.40) of the children were directly related to the mother’s hemoglobin levels (-0.43).CONCLUSIONS Mothers and children were associated concerning anemia, vitamin A deficiency and anthropometric markers. Living in rural areas is a determining factor for the families health status.

Abstract:
This essay examines the consequences of the near-canonical status acquired over the years by UN Security Council Resolution 242. After tracing the evolution of the vision of peace seen to flow from 242, the essay explores the various ways in which the resolution has been read. In particular, the interpretation of Israel (backed by the United States) is examined, along with the balance of power factor. The essay concludes by suggesting that clinging to 242 as ““canonical”” inhibits clear-sighted thinking on new approaches that take cognizance of the greatly altered circumstances.

Abstract:
Canonical correlation analysis is a multivariate method to examine the relationships between two (X and Y) sets of variables when all measurements are obtained from same broilers. Canonical correlation analysis aims to obtain new variables called as canonical variates formed by linear combinations of the original variables for each set and by maximizing the relationships between two set. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between 8 biochemical traits (Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), Albumin, Triglyceride, Total Cholesterol, Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, Glucose, Total Protein and Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)) and 4 oxidative stress traits (total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), lipid peroxide (LPO)) in broiler chickens. As a result, the correlation between the first canonical variable pair was found 0.594.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the rabbinic discussion of whether Song of Songs renders the hands unclean in m. Yad. 3.5. This text has often been used to suggest that the canonicity of the Song of Songs was contested in early Judaism, thus ‘functionally decanonizing’ this biblical book. Yet this view has recently come under serious challenge because of other evidence in the rabbinic tradition. This study evaluates various interpretations of the discussion, which alternately emphasize canonicity, ritual purity, or divine inspiration. It explains the weaknesses of several proposals and suggests that a solution to the problem might lie in demonstrating the non-equivalence of canonicity and ability to defile the hands through reference to m. Yad. 4.5.

Abstract:
AbstractDuring the modern period, the authority of 2 Peter for Christian theological formation has been challenged by the reconstructions of historical criticism. The verdict of biblical scholarship has been largely negative: the theological conception of 2 Peter comes from a person and for a setting that does not easily cohere with the rest of the New Testament writings. The present essay seeks to rehabilitate the status of 2 Peter for use in biblical theology, independent of the historical problem it poses for the interpreter, by approaching its theological subject matter within the setting of the New Testament canon, where its theological perspective functions as complementary to and integral with 1 Peter in forming Scripture's Petrine witness to the faith.

Zorzi, Daniel J. "Towards altering canonical status: A case for Catholic universities and colleges in Canada." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/9568.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Apostolic Constitution, Ex corde Ecclesiae, John Paul II states that the Catholic university and college is a human institution wherein the members critically assist in the on-going promotion of human dignity and cultural heritage through the three-fold missions of teaching, researching, and providing various pastoral services. Moreover, the members perform these tasks, imbued with the Christian spirit and inspired with the Gospel values in order to "assure in an institutional manner a Christian presence in the university world confronting the great problems of society and culture." In short, the institution marks the confluence of two streams within a Catholic academic environment--culture and religion. Church legislation has remained neither silent nor irrelevant on the question of Catholic higher education. In fact, the 1983 Code of Canon Law devotes several canons of related issues pertinent to these institutions. It does not, however, systematically address the critical topic of church-related educational institutions with respect to religiously-owned universities and colleges and their canonical status. Instead, in a more general way, the 1983 Code introduces new and broader options for canonical status, including the public and private juridic person and the public and private associations of the faithful with or without juridic personality. Consequently, at the heart of this dissertation lies the issue of canonical status of religiously-owned federated Catholic universities and colleges in Canada; the crux of the matter is the precise determination of and alteration to that canonical status, given the broader designations in the 1983 Code. Accordingly, based on the presumption that tracing the titles to property of religiously-owned educational institutions is the truest indicator of its present canonical status, this dissertation undertakes a canonical investigation into the titles to property of the Basilian-owned, Canadian federated Assumption University at Windsor, Ontario. Selecting and properly applying an option, if appropriate, presents innovative ways to direct various educational institutions within particular settings and under different governance models, while ensuring, among other concerns, the protection against exposure to civil and canonical liabilities of church-related institutions and the on-going mission of the Catholic university.

Dikos, Peter. "The status of the canonical form of marriage in Papua New Guinea: A comparative study of customary, statutory and canonical celebration of marriage." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29289.

Full text
Abstract:
The people in Papua New Guinea contract marriage according to their traditional, customary law, normally in every case prior to any Christian rite of marriage. From the time of their customary marriage, even Catholics, consider themselves properly married. Nevertheless, they are aware that they cannot receive the Eucharist as long as they remain unmarried in the eyes of the Church. If it takes place at all, the Church marriage is often celebrated years after the customary marriage and this rite loses its meaning for the couple and many Catholics think that a Church marriage contributes, if anything, little to the married state. At best it regularizes a couple's position before the priest and this provides access to the Eucharist. This attitude and the low percentage of Catholics who celebrate their marriage in the canonical form has been a matter of increasing concern to the Church in Papua New Guinea. Customary marriage differs from the Western form of marriage in two respects: (a) It comes into being in the course of protracted negotiations between the families of the bridegroom and the bride. Various stages in the negotiations are marked by various ceremonies; (b) while free choice and consent of the parties is in no way precluded, the inter-familial relationship is an inseparable characteristic of the marriage according to Papua New Guinean customs. It was with an intention of identifying and proposing an equitable solution the pastoral problems related to marriage and family life in Papua New Guinea that we undertook our study regarding the status of the canonical form of marriage in Papua New Guinea. The status quaestionis of study was: How might the customary laws expressed in the traditional celebration of marriage be safeguarded and yet contextualized within the Church's legislation on the canonical form of marriage? This status quaestionis is answered in four inter-related chapters. The principal conclusion of our study suggests that the most serious feature of a low marriage rate in the church is the separation in time of the customary and sacramental marriage, which leads to a widespread view that sacramental marriage is largely irrelevant. For this reason, we discuss at length in the fourth chapter the compatibility between the notions of a natural contract (contractum naturale) and the sacramental marriage. The integration of the customary celebration, that is, natural marriage, and the canonical celebration is possible only when marriage is actually celebrated within a cultural context that conforms to the customary legal traditions of people. Because of this compatibility between the two forms of marriage, any adaptation of the canonical form of marriage to customary celebration must take into consideration the different roles the lay people, that is, the leaders of the communities or elders of families as well as the priest have to play. Ouattara, Michel. "L’institution basilicale : Statut canonique, enjeu des relations église/états." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SACLS135.

Full text
Abstract:
The basilican institution, rooted in the oldest past of Rome, has long been characterized by a specific architectural plan inheriting the previous pagan building. Enriched with liturgical privileges, sometimes sharing the functions or competing with the cathedral, gradually having a canonical status, the basilica was also involved in the relations that the Roman Catholic Church maintained with the states and civil societies. The powerful symbolism and prestige attached to the basilicas - and first and foremost to the City's major and patriarchal basilicas - commanded, partly on the basis of a decree of pope Pius VII (1805), the elaboration of a pontifical policy linked to the granting of the title of minor basilica. The Holy-See then granted the basilican title to shrines inscribed simultaneously in their local space and in the universal dimension, confluence allowing especially the pontiffs to use them as relay of magisterial teaching. After the Vatican II’s council and the decree of 9 November 1989 of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the query for a basilican institution is first appreciated at the level of the local Church (Diocese and Conference of Bishops) before being transferred to the Holy See, an evolution which indicates the revalorization of the particular Churches in the institutional process. The actors involved in the basilica’s case of recognition present a triangular relationship between the Holy See, the political leaders of the region or country where the building is constructed or to be built and the "Christian people" concerned by the established or candidate basilica status. Ultimately, it is the current use of the basilica by the faithful, pilgrims and visitors that helps to define the general importance of this or that basilica for the Church. The present work questions the usefulness of basilicas, their development and multiplication from the nineteenth century and especially during the pontificates that followed Vatican II. From a total of 1.765 basilicas currently listed, less than 150 belong to the ancient, medieval and modern period, as much in the nineteenth century, but more than a thousand were instituted in the twentieth century and more than 200 since 2000. Their status as eminent churches seems to be accommodating themselves to their expansion and the increase in their attendance, or even to encourage this development. This dynamic contemporary movement has to be evaluated as a sign of ecclesial vitality, self-sustaining change or deployment of the Vatican II orientations. In the absence of proposals for legal evolution in this thesis, proposals which do not seem to be necessary in the current state of affairs, the present work contributes to a reflection on the basilican future in general in order to better define its coming trajectory

Abstract:
This collection of essays brings together theories of play and game with theatre and performance to produce new understandings of the history and design of early modern English drama. Through literary analysis and embodied practice, an international team of distinguished scholars examines a wide range of games—from dicing to bowling to roleplaying to videogames—to uncover their fascinating ramifications for the stage in Shakespeare’s era and our own. Foregrounding ludic elements challenges the traditional view of drama as principally mimesis, or imitation, revealing stageplays to be improvisational experiments and participatory explorations into the motive, means, and value of recreation. Delving into both canonical masterpieces and hidden gems, this innovative volume stakes a claim for play as the crucial link between games and early modern theatre, and for the early modern theatre as a critical site for unraveling the continued cultural significance and performative efficacy of gameplay today.

Abstract:
Control problems in dynamic systems require optimal selection of input trajectories and the system parameters. In this paper, a novel procedure for optimization of linear dynamic system is proposed that solves simultaneously the parameter design problem and the optimal control problem using a specific system state transformation. Conventional optimization methods are also examined to compare with the proposed method. The limitations and advantages of both methods are discussed in terms of the number of states and inputs. Consequently, linear dynamic system examples are optimized under various constraints and the merits of the proposed method are examined.

Abstract:
Due to the nonlinear dynamics of hydraulic systems, applying high performance closed-loop controllers is complicated. In this paper, a single-rod hydraulic actuator is considered in which load displacement (for positioning purposes) is controlled via manipulation of the input voltage to the servo-valve. Dynamics of the servo-valve is described by first and second order transfer functions (named as Models 1 and 2). Through linearization of the system around its operating points, dynamics of the hydraulic actuator is represented in the state space. A full-order observer is designed for on-line states estimation. Then, feedback control system is designed for both regulation and tracking objectives through pole-placement approach based on general canonical control form (GCCF). For tracking of the desired commands, a modified integral control is required (since the plant has not integrator). Results show that the regulation, states estimation, desired tracking and final tracking accuracy are achieved after applying the controller. Required input voltage and load positioning are compared for the two distinct dynamics of the servo-valve (Model 1 and 2).
