Sloot, Bart. The General Data Protection Regulation in Plain Language. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463726511.

Full text
Abstract:
The General Data Protection Regulation in Plain Language is a guide for anyone interested in the much-discussed rules of the GDPR. In this legislation, which came into force in 2018, the European Union meticulously describes what you can and cannot do with data about other people. Violating these rules can lead to a fine of up to 20 million euros. This book sets out the most important obligations of individuals and organisations that process data about others. These include taking technical security measures, carrying out an impact assessment and registering all data-processing procedures within an organisation. It also discusses the rights of citizens whose data are processed, such as the right to be forgotten, the right to information and the right to data portability.

Abstract:
The concept of the literary canon is one of the most debated and controversial in the western intellectual tradition. This book offers ten contributions by Italian scholars of Anglo-American culture addressing the way in which the concept of the literary canon holds out against areas traditionally considered as external or extraneous to it. The essays range over different topics: the etymological analysis of the term "canon"; the relations between canon and performativity; paraliterature – a universe populated by non-hierarchic genres; the relations between post-colonial literature and the canon; postmodern biofiction; studies on translation and finally gay and lesbian literature. The book ends with a meditation on the innovations wrought on the Anglo-American canon by the virtual world of Internet and with a reading proposal originating from a different area of literary studies. Taken as a whole, the intention of the book is to pave the way to democratisation and pluralism in literary studies, going beyond the limitations set by the traditional scale of values of the "western canon". It proposes a frequentation of the geographical and cultural borderlines and hence of the areas of resistance that such borderlines pose to the dominant conceptual hierarchies within and around us, enabling us to glimpse an original future for literature and for western culture in a broader sense.

Linnebo, Øystein. Dynamic Set Theory. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199641314.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
The dynamic abstractionist approach to set theory canvassed in Chapter 3 is properly developed. We begin with a plural version of Frege’s Basic Law V. While this law is inconsistent in the ordinary static setting, it becomes consistent when transposed to a dynamic setting. Thus transposed, the law ensures that any objects whatsoever can be used to define a set. This is an intuitive and highly explanatory principle of set formation, which traces its roots back to Cantor. The resulting dynamic approach to set theory justifies all of ordinary ZF set theory and provides an explication of the celebrated iterative conception of sets.

Abstract:
Bach is an entirely new volume in the “Master Musicians” series, replacing the old entry by Malcolm Boyd with updated coverage of the composer’s life and works. Tracing the composer’s biography from origins in Thuringia to mastery as cantor and music director at Leipzig, the book sets Bach in the cultural context of early modern Europe. Family life, social structure, and court culture are among the topics examined from the perspective of contemporary approaches to history. Bach’s work as student, organist, music director, and teacher is considered alongside his compositions, with discussions of representative examples from all the major categories, including concertos, cantatas, chamber music, and pieces for harpsichord and for organ. In addition to a handy list of works and other useful reference matter included in every volume of the series, this book is also accompanied by an online supplement that offers a glossary, a guide to further reading, and audio versions of the numerous music examples.

Alonso Montero, Xesús. Rosalía de Castro traducida ó latín e cantada en latín e grego clásico. Centro de Estudios Rosalianos, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.32766/rag.173.

Abstract:

Tennant, Neil. Core Logic and the Paradoxes. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198777892.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
The Law of Excluded Middle is not to be blamed for any of the logico-semantic paradoxes. We explain and defend our proof-theoretic criterion of paradoxicality, according to which the ‘proofs’ of inconsistency associated with the paradoxes are in principle distinct from those that establish genuine inconsistencies, in that they cannot be brought into normal form. Instead, the reduction sequences initiated by paradox-posing proofs ‘of ⊥’ do not terminate. This criterion is defended against some recent would-be counterexamples by stressing the need to use Core Logic’s parallelized forms of the elimination rules. We show how Russell’s famous paradox in set theory is not a genuine paradox; for it can be construed as a disproof, in the free logic of sets, of the assumption that the set of all non-self-membered sets exists. The Liar (by contrast) is still paradoxical, according to the proof-theoretic criterion of paradoxicality.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on a lecture at PCMI this chapter is structured around two sets of results, one concerning groups of automorphisms of surfaces and the other concerning the nilpotent genus of groups. The first set of results exemplifies the theme that even the nicest of groups can harbour a diverse array of complicated finitely presented subgroups: we shall see that the finitely presented subgroups of the mapping class groups of surfaces of finite type can be much wilder than had been previously recognised. The second set of results fits into the quest to understand which properties of a finitely generated group can be detected by examining the group’s finite and nilpotent quotients and which cannot.

Full text
Abstract:
The relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and cancer is complex, dynamic, and evolving. Associations depend on SES measures, cancer type, sociodemographic factors including race/ethnicity, and historical trends. However, socioeconomic disadvantage is often associated with a higher risk of cancer, particularly cancers diagnosed at a late stage, as well as worse prognosis once diagnosed. Research on secular trends over the past 70 years has shown reversals of the socioeconomic gradient for lung and colorectal cancer consistent with differential trends by SES in patterns of smoking, diet, and obesity. Rates of these cancers are now currently higher in socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. SES is considered to be a “fundamental” determinant of health outcomes, and this appears true throughout the cancer spectrum—from cancer incidence to detection, treatment, and survival. Investigations over the past decade have increasingly considered the simultaneous impact of individual SES and area-level SES (as a contextual influence) on health outcomes.

Full text
Abstract:
Judgments about causality are central to the development of interventions intended to reduce exposure to risk factors that cause cancer. Because causation is not directly observable in medicine, scientists and philosophers have had to develop sets of constructs and heuristics that define “cause” operationally. The criteria in this framework, often attributed to the British medical statistician Sir Austin Bradford Hill or to the 1964 Report of the US Surgeon General on tobacco, include consistency, strength of association, specificity, temporality, coherence/plausibility/analogy, biological gradient, and experiment. This chapter reviews these criteria in depth and considers the challenges of applying them to population research on cancer. It discusses the concepts of causation in the context of the multistage nature of cancer, the “counterfactual” notion of causation, the component cause model for understanding diseases with multiple causes, and the “weight of the evidence” approach for integrating information from multiple lines of research.

Schröder, Fritz H. Screening for prostate cancer. Edited by James W. F. Catto. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199659579.003.0062.

Full text
Abstract:
Screening for a disease must be clearly defined and differentiated from early detection. ‘Screening’ refers to the application of tests to the whole population or to defined segments such as males within certain defined high risk age groups. If applied in such a fashion ‘screening’ for prostate cancer may also be described epidemiologically as ‘secondary prevention’. While high-quality randomized studies show that screening reduces prostate cancer mortality by 21–44%, there is wide agreement that the introduction of population-based screening is at present premature because harms, mainly the high rate of overdiagnosis seen currently outweighs the benefits. This chapter attempts to put current knowledge into perspective with a set of recognized prerequirements for the application of screening, established by Wilson and Jungner in 1968.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews phytoplankton sampling and analysis techniques, discussing them in light of their advantages and disadvantages. Different sampling methods have varying levels of precision and accuracy. This means that they affect the ways in which individual data sets can be interpreted, and methods therefore have to be kept consistent within time series to avoid creating artefacts. The discussions cover qualitative and semi-quantitative methods, quantitative methods, sample analysis, automated/semi-automated systems, and molecular methodologies. None of the methods are universally applicable but depend on the right set of tools and the scientific and financial context in which they are used. Molecular techniques hold great promise particularly for taxa that cannot be identified by routine microscopical techniques.

Abstract: Despite a growing body of literature around men’s bodies and body image, there is a paucity of research surrounding men and body image within the cancer literature. This chapter considers a range of issues including men’s body image and masculinities as well as illness-induced body dissatisfaction in men. It draws on literature and research to identify key issues so that health professionals can be informed about particular body image issues relevant to male cancer patients. The way in which the chapter is set out is designed to guide the reader through information that will highlight the broader issues facing men with respect to body image. It provides evidence to emphasize the need to understand men and their bodies in contemporary Western society generally and in the context of illness such as prostate cancer, which is the leading gender-specific cancer in men.

Abstract:
Navigating the future of psychiatry requires a firm understanding of its past. This book is intended as a guide for students and practitioners of psychiatry and psychology who seek to understand the evolution of psychiatry as a scientific discipline. Landmark papers covering a broad array of topics are described and their scientific contributions are placed within a historical context. An introductory section sets the stage for the rest of the book, with a presentation of the major foundational constructs of diagnosis and epidemiology. Subsequent sections examine major facets of the theory and practice of psychiatry, namely the pathogenesis of mental disorders, the pharmacotherapy of major mental disorders, psychosocial interventions, and somatic treatments. A final section explores ethical and forensic considerations within the field, as well as suicide and research methodologies. This framework echoes the complexity of psychiatry and psychology, which cannot be reduced to a single set of subspecialty categories.
