Abstract:
Urban sprawl of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area is rapidly replacing agricultural and non-irrigated desert vegetation with an irrigated urban forest comprised of a mixture of woody ornamental plant materials. Our objective was to estimate and compare the carbon acquisition potential (CAP) of residential landscape plants to the dominate plant species found in adjacent agricultural and desert sites. Maximum shoot and leaf gas exchange measurements were made at monthly intervals for one year (Aug. 1998 to July 1999) using a portable photo-synthesis system. Concurrent diel gas exchange measurements were made seasonally. Gas exchange measurements were made on alfalfa at agricultural sites, blue palo verde, creosote bush and bur sage at desert sites, and on a mixture of 19 different woody ornamental tree, shrub and ground cover species at residential sites. A trapezoidal integration model was used to estimate daily CAP at each site based on maximum assimilation flux values and seasonally adjusted diel assimilation patterns. Annual landscape CAP was then calculated as the summation of estimates of daily CAP. Calculated annual CAP was highest at agricultural sites (159.0 mol/m2 per year), lowest at desert sites (35.3 mol/m2 per year), and intermediate at residential landscape sites (99.3 mol/m2 per year).

Abstract:
Writing in the 1590s about Sierra Leone, André Alvares de Almada, a Cape Verde Islands trader who had probably at one time visited Sierra Leone, commended its peoples for being “unfriendly to the English and French,” not least by fighting John Hawkins—the latter remark obviously a reference to Hawkins' well-known visit in 1567/68. But when did the French visit Sierra Leone? Elsewhere I have cited the evidence for three French voyages to the Sierra Leone estuary in the later 1560s, probably in 1565, 1566, and 1567. I now analyze archive material published in two French works that appeared long ago but are probably little known to Africanists, since both concentrate on voyages to the Americas. The first source calendars items in the registres de tabellionage (notarial registers) of the Normandy port of Honfleur relating to intercontinental voyages, the items being mainly financial agreements made before or after voyages. Dates, names of ships, and destinations are supplied for the period from 1574 to 1621: what proportion of all intercontinental voyages from Honfleur during that period is represented in the registers is uncertain. But in the eleven years between 1574 and 1584, there are recorded 24 voyages to both Guinea and America, the ships proceeding across the Atlantic from Africa. The American destination is usually described as “Indes de Pérou,” meaning the Caribbean. The African destination of 15 named vessels making 19 voyages is “Serlione” or “coste de Serlion,” in 15 instances given singly, otherwise with the addition of “et Guinée,” “et Guinée et coste de Bonnes-Gens,” or “et cap de Vert et coste de Mina.” The remaining voyages were to “Guinée,” to “cap de Vert [Cape Verde, i.e. Senegal],” to “cap des Bonnes-Gens” [Ivory Coast], or to more than one of these.

Abstract:
Every day more believers leave the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, covered with shame and debts. The “theology of prosperity” is not infallible and the most fervent faithful can end up broke without God having, as promised, rewarded their generous donations. For these disillusioned believers, there is nothing left. There is no social security or institution to turn to for compensation. Their financial contributions, which were supposed to be “spontaneous”, have long since left Brazil to feed the accounts of the Mother-Church or to fund other opaque investments. In the micro-world of Cape Verde, these numerous deserters quickly make the tour of the islands and find no shortage of listeners. It is thus not surprising that this “demand” saw the development, three years ago, of a Church that specifically aims to “restore” the faith of these so-called “victims” of the Neo-Pentecostal and, by extension, Evangelical system: the “Restoration Temple”. To this end, the American-based Church bases its discourse on similarity and opposition: the cult is identical to the Universal Church in its emotionalism and theatricality and its striving towards “liberation”, but it is built on a virulent criticism of its theology of prosperity and its exclusiveness.

Abstract. Monomethylamine (MA), dimethylamine (DMA) and diethylamine (DEA) were detected at non-negligible concentrations in sub-micrometer particles at the Cap Verde Atmospheric Observatory (CVAO) located on the island of São Vicente in Cape Verde during algal blooms in 2007. The concentrations of these amines in five stage impactor samples ranged from 0–30 pg m−3 for MA, 130–360 pg m−3 for DMA and 5–110 pg m−3 for DEA during the spring bloom in May 2007 and 2–520 pg m−3 for MA, 100–1400 pg m−3 for DMA and 90–760 pg m−3 for DEA during an unexpected winter algal bloom in December 2007. Anomalously high Saharan dust deposition and intensive ocean layer deepening were found at the Atmospheric Observatory and the associated Ocean Observatory during algal bloom periods. The highest amine concentrations in fine particles (impactor stage 2, 0.14–0.42 μm) indicate that amines are likely taken up from the gas phase into the acidic sub-micrometer particles. The contribution of amines to the organic carbon (OC) content ranged from 0.2–2.5% C in the winter months, indicating the importance of this class of compounds to the carbon cycle in the marine environment. Furthermore, aliphatic amines originating from marine biological sources likely contribute significantly to the nitrogen content in the marine atmosphere. The average contribution of the amines to the detected nitrogen species in sub-micrometer particles can be non-negligible, especially in the winter months (0.1% N–1.5% N in the sum of nitrate, ammonium and amines). This indicates that these smaller aliphatic amines can be important for the carbon and the nitrogen cycles in the remote marine environment.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

From a country of emigrants, Cape Verde transformed into a country of immigrants during the 90’s, mainly in the second half of that decade. The country started receiving immigrants especially from the neighbourhood countries of the ECOWAS region, due to the free movement of people subscribed in the Protocol of movement of people ratified by Cape Verde. The country has been a focus of attraction of labour workers following the boom in tourism and related activities, including construction and public works, commerce, hotels, and restaurants services.

This work has the main objective to analyse the construction of the images of the people coming from the ECOWAS countries members in Cape Verde, the representations and reciprocal attitudes in relation to this phenomenon and the contexts in which they occur. It is assumed that we are in a country where the local population always interacted with foreigners not in their origins but in the various migratory destinations. Similarly, this coexistence that happened mainly with white Europeans and Americans is happening with the neighbours of the continent. Consequently, it is intended to understand the relationships the social groups, nationals and immigrants establish among them as a result of establishment and insertion in the national socioeconomic sectors, mainly at the labour market, where, along with high unemployment rate, it is, verified a massive inclusion of the ECOWAS foreigners.

The current study is based on a dialogue with the international migration theories and the social representation theories that will support the thesis.

Monteiro, Pedro Serafim Moreira Duarte.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The markets efficiency has been an issue of particular interest in the field of financial investigation in recent decades. However, due to the intensification of the studies and the arise of evidences about the existence of abnormal behaviours on financial assets returns, over the last years, this theory begun to be discussed in academic circles. The debate of this theme is still very controversial, because on one hand there are the defenders of the efficiency hypothesis, who defend that identified anomalies cannot be generalized and are not consistent in the long-term; on the other hand, there are the defenders of behavioral finance tendency, to whom the anomalies are caused by documented patterns about the irrational behaviour of investors. These behaviours are inconsistent with the markets efficient theory. Among the detected anomalies, we highlight the calendar anomalies, such as: the January effect, the day of week effect and holiday effect among others; anomalies over the valuation of assets, such as: the size effect and other anomalies on the reaction. The day of week effect is one of the most persistent effect detected in several international markets, and due to this scenario, the objective of this essay is the finding of calendar abnormalities, namely the day of week effect, where the Monday, the Friday and the weekend effects will be analyzed. For this checking, we used the average daily exchange rates from the prices of the Cape Verde Stock Exchange, for the period from late 2005 to late 2008. The statistical analysis of daily results indicated that there is no evidence of the existence of the day of the week effect.

Abstract:
This thesis intends to examine the inevitably precarious stances that the writer Germano Almeida constantly seeks out within Cape Verdean society. Starting from the premise that by definition literary expression constitutes a reflection on its own existence within the fictional universe it creates, this study intends, first, to illustrate how Germano Almeida, through his scenography, manages to position his work both within the power structure and on the literary scene of Cape Verde. The first part of the analysis focuses on the special relationship between literature and politics in both colonial and post-colonial society, the inclusion of humor and irony in scholarly literature, the conflict that arises between a well-established oral tradition and actual writing with the latter playing a singular role within a highly differentiated bilingual society. Lastly, the gap between the expected and the real reactions to Almeida’s work is examined. The second part of the analysis illustrates Germano Almeida’s desire to participate actively in shaping Cape Verdean society. If Almeida’s first fictions systematically deconstruct traditional representations of a rural and cohesive Creole society, more recent works definitely depict the traits of a primarily urban society that is forced to constantly deal with contingencies. The third part of this study highlights Almeida’s constant desire to place the diversity of Creole experiences on a time continuum that not only gives meaning to the past but also provides greater command of the future and the possibility to thus avoid the danger of grotesquely repeating history. In the end, the study of these time-space configurations makes it obvious that their author sees himself not only as a full member of Cape Verdean society but also as an objective, and therefore, informed observer

Abstract:
This research intends to study the empowering process of the French teachers at the secondary level in the creole and portuguese-speaking archipelago of Cape Verde. The author investigates the field among teachers of French and social actors implicated in the French language teaching and learning. Her action-research is built upon four chapters among which the first chapter exposes her methodological options and her inner and outer position as a professor-researcher.The second chapter aims to present the general context of the research, pointing out how important the concept of autonomy is to understand the arquipelago of Cape Verde, in a historical and sociolinguistical perspect. The third chapter gives elements of information about the global evolution of the education system and of the training of the French teachers, and detects three trainers the author called « autonomy mentors » because their official functions would be to develop the autonomy : they are the advisory tutor and the coordinator (high school level) and the supervisor (public university of Cape Verde). Useful indicators of autonomy or non autonomy at the secondary level have been drowned from a detailed analysis of the teaching practices of the French teachers and of the « Mentors ».In the fourth and last chapter the conclusions of the two previous chapters are used to make suggestions which could help to solve the problems observed, in order to improve the quality of the secondary level French language teaching and learning in the Cape-Verdean context

Abstract:
This thesis is the first book-length description of the Portuguese Creole spoken on the island of Fogo (Cape Verde, West-Africa), spoken by most of the 40,000 island’s inhabitants as well as by its diaspora. This work provides an insight on the linguistic structure of this variety, based on data collected during fieldwork occurred between 2016 and 2019. This study comprises with nine chapters, namely (1) introduction, (2) phonology, (3) syllabic structure, (4), stress, (5) nominal morphology, (6) verbal morphology, (7) syntax, (8) lexical peculiarities and (9) conclusion. This thesis brings new elements both to the synchronic and diachronic analysis of Cape Verdean Creole. At the same time, it contributes with comparative data for the reconstruction of the Upper Guinea Portuguese Creole (UGPC) language family. These data show in particular that Fogo Cape Verdean emerged quite early as a distinct variety among UGPCs and illustrate the main characteristics of this variety. This thesis also provides historical data on the discovery, settlement, trade connections, maritime interactions, social structure and sociolinguistics of the island of Fogo, and shows the role played by these elements in the development and shaping of Fogo’s unique linguistic makeup

Abstract:
Island state located off the Senegalese-Mauritanian coast, Cape Verde was inhabited from the late15th century by European settlers and African slaves. He inherited this story, a diglossic situationwhere Portuguese is the official language while Creole, now called « Cape Verdean language », -born of Luso-African language contacts – is the vehicle of everyday expression. The history of CapeVerdean society is also rooted in that of emigration and national and international mobility. If weatherconditions have prompted many Cape Verdean to exile, both in Africa than in Europe or the UnitedStates, structural handicaps have also favored the constant migrations of islanders worldwide.Through surveys conducted both in Cape Verde and France, are studied differences in languageproficiency between Cape Verdean who acquired their languages in each of these countries. Theanalysis is based primarily on their personal journeys and pays particular attention to the forms ofbilingualism of each other. The study, which focuses at first on Creole, Portuguese and French, include spontaneous and induced oral productions, and written productions, which are indicative oforal proficiency

This dissertation has as essential purpose to analyse how it is processed the teaching of Natural Sciences in the Basic Education of Adults (EBA), accounting to the conceptions, principles and educative practices developed in that subject. In Cap Vert, Natural Sciences is not taught as an isolated subject in the Basic Education (EB). The Natural Sciences contents are taught in the Integrated Sciences subject, that englobes Geography, History and Natural Sciences. Analysing the teaching practices of this subject in the Cultural Circles was realized the existence of difficulties and limitations on the side of the animators. It is necessary changes that allow to overcome those insufficiencies. One of the alternatives was the use of the PdT approach. Being that way, the privileged places of investigation were the Cultural Circles, that try to develop their educative work, opting for the Pedagogy approach of the Text, an experiment of the General Direction of the Alphabetisation and Education of Adults in Cap Vert. The central question of the investigation is: how is it taught the subject of Natural Sciences in the Cultural Circles of Cap Vert that adopted the Pedagogy of the Text. On the theoric fundamentation of this project, the essential references were of the following authors: Giordan and of Vecchi, that approached the fundamental question of the apprentices conceptions; Fumagalli, that points as strategies of Natural Sciences teaching the existing knowledge of the apprentices; Mugrabi, that gives inputs for a text approach on the teachinglearning processes; Tristão and Amaral, who speak about the practical of the interdesciplinarity and of the environment question as elements that make easy the acquisition of a dispersed and compartmentalized knowledge, and making visible the interactions between the subjects. We use the qualitative methodology. In the research participated three animators that work with the Pedagogy approach of the Text and eighty one apprentices of the third level in the Cultural Circles in the country of Praia. The data collecting instruments were a participant observation grill, and interviews of the animators and apprentices. The collected information was used in the evaluation of the opportunity of the Pedagogy of the Text for the Adults education in Cap Vert.
Utilizamos a metodologia qualitativa.

Abstract:
The reliability of check valves is paramount to the safe operation of plant systems. This paper provides a description of the benefits of applying advanced phased array techniques to establish the operational readiness of swing-check valves in the static or dynamic operational modes. In addition, a utility model perspective is described explaining how the Phased Array Sectorial Scanning (PASS) data assessments can be used to support operational predictive maintenance decisions. A collaborative effort between Arizona Public Service Co., the Palo Verde plants, and IHI Southwest Technologies, Inc. (IHI), was realized when IHI personnel applied Phased Array Sequence Scanning techniques to swing-check valves operating in the closed static position, as well as to three identical valves operating in the dynamic open positions in Palo Verde Units 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Abstract:

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: [This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2018 issue of the Interdisciplinary Journal of e-Skills and Lifelong Learning, Volume 14] The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of awareness, perceived benefits, types of data collected and perceived control on the privacy concerns of digital natives living in what is considered the smart city of Cape Town, South Africa. Background: Smart city projects have been known to bring benefits such as sustainable economic development to cities. However one may wonder what and how certain factors influence the privacy concerns that come along with the implementation of smart cities particularly in the African context. In a time when information can be easily transferred, accessed and even shared, it is no surprise that people may have inclinations to be very protective of their personal information. Methodology: The study is quantitative in nature. Data has been collected using an online survey and analysed statistically. Contribution: This study contributes to scientific literature by detailing the impact of specific factors on the privacy concerns of citizens living in an African city Findings: The findings reveal that the more impersonal data is collected by the Smart City of Cape Town, the lower the privacy concerns of the digital natives. The findings also show that higher the need of the digital natives to be aware of the security measure put in place by the city, the higher their privacy concerns Recommendations for Practitioners: Practitioners (i.e. policy makers) should ensure that it is a legal requirement to have security measures in place to protect the privacy of the citizens while col-lecting data within the smart city of Cape Town. These regulations should be made public to appease any apprehensions from its citizens towards smart city implementations. Less personal data should also be collected on the citizens. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers should further investigate issues related to privacy concerns in the context of African developing countries as they have unique cultural and philosophical perspectives that might influence how people perceive privacy. Impact on Society: Cities are becoming “smarter” and in developing world context like Africa, privacy issues might not have as a strong influence as is the case in the developing world. Future Research: Further qualitative studies should be conducted to better understand issues related to perceived benefits, perceived control, awareness of how data is collected and level of privacy concerns of digital natives in developing countries.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that may lead to adopting mobile commerce in a developing country in South Asia. Background: Access to information is key for communication and for controlling our environment to improve our lives. The growth of mobile phones and the internet technologies have greatly improved the access to information and encompassed the social and business world. Mobile use may cross from personal over to commerce in some developing world households. From the Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICTD) perspective, researchers are interested in whether mobiles promote or enable economic growth or broader well-being. The effects of mobile commerce or m-commerce have mixed results so far. Methodology: This study will use survey of the literature. Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: [This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2018 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 15] Although cassava is one of the crops that can be grown during the dry season in Northeastern Thailand, most farmers in the region do not know whether the crop can grow in their specific areas because the available agriculture planning guideline only provides a generic list of dry-season crops that can be grown in the whole region. The purpose of this research is to develop a predictive model that can be used to predict suitable areas for growing cassava in Northeastern Thailand during the dry season. Background: This paper develops a decision support system that can be used by farmers to assist them in determining if cassava can be successfully grown in their specific areas. Methodology: This study uses satellite imagery and data on land characteristics to develop a machine learning model for predicting the suitable areas for growing cassava in Thailand’s Nakhon-Phanom Province. Contribution: This research contributes to the body of knowledge by developing a novel model for predicting suitable areas for growing cassava. Findings: This study identified elevation and Ferric Acrisols (Af) as the two most important features for predicting the best-suited areas for growing cassava in Nakhon-Phanom province, Thailand. Together with other predictors, soil types contributed to the improvement of the overall model based the F-score. The Boosted Decision Tree was the best algorithm for predicting cassava in the area. Recommendations for Practitioners: Farmers and agricultural extension agents will use the decision support system developed in this study to identify specific areas that are suitable for growing cassava in Nakhon-Phanom province, Thailand. Recommendation for Researchers: To improve the predictive accuracy of the model developed in this study, more land and crop characteristics data should be incorporated during model development. The ground truth data for areas growing cassava should also be collected for a longer period to provide a more accurate sample of the areas that are suitable for cassava growing. Impact on Society: The use of machine learning for the development of new farming systems will enable farmers to produce more food throughout the year to feed the world’s growing population. Future Research: Further studies should be carried out to map other suitable areas for growing dry-season crops and to develop decision support systems for those crops.
