A pollution survey was done in Milnerton industrial area along three transects, the coastal road, the R27 road, and the N7 road. In this project lichens were used as pollution monitors and their availability, abundance and percentage cover were used to estimate the level of pollution. Lichen specimens were collected from St. James, which is far from the pollution source and put in the vicinity of the Caltex oil refinery for four month after which they were analysed for their fluorescence and chlorophyll content. Until 1982, when the National Research Institute for Oceanology (NRIO) erected self-contained, automatic weather stations (AWS) on the Cape South Coast, no continuous coastal measurements were available. This Institute had erected an AWS on the drilling rig Sedco K in 1978, so that over 3 years of very valuable off- shore data was already available on the adjacent Agulhas Bank. Al though the weather offices at George and Port Elizabeth have made accurate meteorological observations for over 30 years, this data is shown here to differ significantly from actual coastal measurements. Cape Coast once a national capital of Ghana and its environs in recent years have constantly suffered perennial acute water shortage. The Brimsu dam which takes its supplies from the Kakum River with current production capacity of 1.4 × 104 m3/day cannot meet the water needs of the study area. The operating levels of the dam during crisis have reduced from 7.3 meters to 4.7 meters over the years with subsequent reduction in water production by 35%. As part of a beach erosion field experiment conducted at Cape Hatteras, NC in February 2010, this study focuses on quantifying longshore currents, which are the basic mechanism that drives longshore sediment transport. Using video imagery, the longshore currents in view of a video camera are estimated with the Optical Current Meter technique and the nearshore morphology is estimated by analyzing breaking wave patterns in standard deviation images. A biogeographic analysis of the seaweed flora of the area from Lüderitz to Cape Agulhas was undertaken. Biogeographic patterns were reviewed across 15 geographic regions. A TWINSPAN analysis showed a clear division of the area into two separate species communities. These two communities are the Benguela province, and the western overlap region between the Benguela and Agulhas provinces. The western overlap region was found to be the most diverse.
