Abstract:
Can a film made in one genre be better understood by viewing it as another? This book investigates this question in relation to Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake of Cape Fear. Scorsese approached the film as a thriller, but Cape Fear is thematically and formally more coherent when viewed as a horror film. Across an introduction and five chapters, this book explores why this is the case. How Scorsese’s Catholicism and passion for horror has informed artistic decisions throughout his career, and the ways in which it reached an apex when he directed Cape Fear. The ways in which conventions of Gothic

This chapter looks at the '50s heist picture—a subgenre of '50s gangster noir—examining John Huston's Asphalt Jungle (1950). In Huston's film, the criminal gang resembles nothing so much as a corporation that mimics the increasing organization and alienation of the “age of anxiety.” Subsequent noir heist films elaborate on this topic, dramatizing the conflict between the individual and the crime syndicate. In these “capers,” the “foot soldier” frequently finds himself caught between the police and the boss—the Law and “Murder, Inc.”—a dire predicament where, as always seems to be the case in t

This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. This chapter examines the role of the soundtrack in the “intensified continuity” style of contemporary Hollywood cinema. Drawing on David Bordwell’s work, it argues that contemporary sound design contributes much to the style’s “impact aesthetic.” Since 1970 soundtracks have increasingly foregrounded six dimensions that function as an aural counterpart to the cinematographic and editing strategies highlighted by Bordwell. The chapter concludes with a comparat

This chapter explores how the Indian pharmaceutical industry, will respond to this shift in market opportunity and technological paradigm in the global biopharmaceutical industry. It examines whether firms in the industry will be able to cater to the global demand for biologics-based drugs and/or its generic version, biosimilars. It uses quantitative analyses of scientific and innovation capabilities of domestic firms from India and also conducts an econometric analysis of India’s market-based demand for biological products, arguing that these would provide early markers for the industry’s fut

This introduction makes the case for ‘modern baroque’, arguing that ‘modernism’ is, in effect, a modern version of classicism, analytic and theory-led. It argues that despite the modernists’ attempts to control and define ‘culture’, the overall context of the interwar period is one in which black, female, working-class and/or homosexual people acquired the ability to generate their own strands within the culture, due to the proliferation of media able to cater for plural audiences (books, but also film, radio, and live performance). Modernism thus existed in dialectic with a modern baroque, bu

Before the seventeenth century, trade across Eurasia was mostly conducted in short segments along the Silk Route and Indian Ocean. Business was organized in family firms, merchant networks, and state-owned enterprises, and dominated by Chinese, Indian, and Arabic traders. However, around 1600 the first two joint-stock corporations, the English and Dutch East India Companies, were established. This book tells the story of overland and maritime trade without Europeans, of European Cape Route trade without corporations, and of how new, large-scale, and impersonal organizations arose in Europe to
