Previous research has claimed that social capital influences innovation capabilities, yet not the extent of its dimensions (cognitive, relational and structural). This study addressed this research gap by a survey performed among ANPEI (Research and Development Nacional Association of Innovative Companies) members, specifically innovation managers from Brazilian and multinational companies from several sectors, operating in Brasil. 440 innovation managers from 220 companies during the period from December/2016 and January/2017 participated. An instrument with 24 items was designed to measure the independent and dependent variables. A web-based survey was created on QuestionPro Platform, to disseminate the survey through a link and collect data easily. The software SmartPLS 3 was used to treat the data as main analysis tool. It estimates PLS path models for the empirical validation of Theoretical model. The results showed that both cognitive, relational and structural dimensions of social capital affect positvelly the generation of innovation capability, but we found out that the structural social capital has a higher impact on the generation of innovation capability. We verified that R&D also affects positevly in the generation of Innovation Capability.<br>A inovação é um dos principais recursos para alcançar o sucesso nas organizações. Bezjian, James Bradley. "Capabilities, recipes, & firm performance : how industry recipes influence the application of dynamic managerial capabilities." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23519.

Full text
Abstract:
Dynamic managerial capabilities are frequently viewed as a source of influence among decision-making managers within environments of volatility. Conversely, managers postulate that decision-making in rapidly changing environments is never perfect and faces a variety of influencing factors. In addition, industries represent a collection of firms that produce similar goods or services for a particular market. This recipe is often recognized by all industry related firms and adapted accordingly. Similarly, firms comprised as “incumbents” and “challengers” are firms that are well established in the industry and firms that seek to change the industry. Recognizing which influencers affect the managerial decision-making process is necessary to adapt and evolve a firm’s decision-making logic. This thesis presents a detailed study of the Hollywood Film Industry Recipe as it relates to the influencing factors within the green lighting process of feature films among incumbent and challenger studios. An inductive research approach is used to investigate four case studies throughout the Hollywood Film Industry. Two case studies are recognized as industry incumbents while the other two are recognized as industry challengers. The analysis identifies an industry recipe, firm adopted industry and adaptations, and dynamic managerial capabilities utilized through the influence of the process. In addition, an illustration of the industry recipes influence dynamic managerial capabilities adopted by firms. Findings suggest that dynamic managerial capabilities is an output of industry recipes adopted amongst firms, and that refinement of those capabilities is a circular renewal process between managerial judgement and firm/managerial dominant logics. In addition, industry recipes influence the way in which dynamic managerial capabilities are acquired, processed, and absorbed. This study contributes to the field of strategy as it suggests a coherent framework that illustrates how industry recipes influence incumbent and challenger studios within a given industry. Additionally, it also demonstrates how dynamic managerial capabilities are formed and structured based on the adopted industry recipe. Finally, it outlines how decisions are made by managers within incumbent and challenger firms, highlighting a circular process of decision-making with regards to the creation an distribution of an industry related product.

Abstract:
Undercapitalization is a major impediment for the growth and survival of Canadian life sciences firms. Proficient management teams are the 'sine qua non' criteria in the venture capital decision-making processes. The purpose of this multicase study was to explore strategies successful venture capitalists use to improve their evaluation processes of life sciences management teams' drug development capabilities. The conceptual framework for this study was based on business process management. The purposeful sample consisted of 10 venture capitalists located in the United States and Canada who had expertise evaluating life sciences management teams. The data were triangulated from semistructured interviews, annual reports, company websites, and articles. Collected data were coded to identify underlying themes. Several themes emerged from the analysis process: begin with the exit in mind, collapse learning timelines, conduct systematic due diligence, and cultivate and critique one's drug development expertise. The findings may provide venture capitalists and other investors such as angel investors with a refined framework for improving investment decisions. Life sciences management teams may also attract more private equity financing by understanding the vicissitudes of investor expectations. Increased investment and venture capital support for life sciences companies may revitalize the development of new therapies and effect social change by improving patient lives and investment outcomes.

Abstract:
Cette thèse propose de tester différentes réponses possibles à la question : quels sont les liens entre capital social, capacités relationnelles, bonheur et développement économique ?<br>Welfare economics in a behavioral world is gaining increasing traction for research in economics and social sciences at large. Especially the last three decades, ever more research efforts have been directed to understand welfare better. Social capital has been one of the prime candidates and now a domain of research. Research is undertaken to understand its importance, how it operates, and what impact it has on the well-being of an individual and the health of a society. The capabilities approach developed by Amartya Sen highlights the fundamental role of economic development that focuses on the improving individual capabilities and expanding choice sets of each individual. However, this capability approach is individual-centric and inadvertently leaves out the shared or the collective nature of an individual’s existence. The social networks/interconnectedness is not addressed in the capability approach of Sen. At the same time, the social networks embody the mobilization of individuals in groups, association, and civic action. This aspect is developed by Giraud et al. (2013), called the relational capability approach. Another major research domain that cannot be neglected in the economic or human development evaluation is happiness (or subjective well-being). The concept of subject well-being is closely related to the social capital domain. In the literature, these concepts of social capital, relational capabilities, subjective well-being and development, and especially the linkages between them are not well explored or explicitly studied. This is the primary motivation for this dissertation

Abstract:
Venture capital (VC) is widely perceived by UK policymakers to be a key requirement for the growth and development of successful and innovative early stage firms. This thesis examines how government policy has impacted the emergence of VC sectors in the UK and US. Using historical, qualitative and quantitative methods it argues that the public rationale behind UK policy has been largely framed in ways that underestimate the importance of capabilities, demand for capital, and institutional differences. The thesis examines venture capitalists' key supply‐demand relationships: with funded firms; with limited partners; and with the markets that allow exit via IPO. It argues that the US VC sector has developed unique capabilities enabling the assembly of complementary assets to bring firms to successful IPO. In the UK, policy aimed at addressing the ‘equity gap' has focused on the provision of capital rather than developing the capabilities that have characterised the US sector. We perform quantitative analysis examining the effectiveness of recent UK schemes at providing VC funding to small firms. Drawing upon two proprietary datasets, including one new hand‐collected dataset of all investments made under the Venture Capital Trust scheme, the thesis provides new quantitative evidence on the success of government policy interventions, demand for capital by firms, and investment exit opportunities. The thesis then compares principal‐agent and evolutionary framing perspectives of the VC sector, arguing the evolutionary view explains some nuances more readily than a pure principal‐agent view. It concludes by discussing the theoretical and policy implications of the research.

This new situation has also led to an exchange between the North and South. Thus, the economic and theoretical corpus has been enriched in favor of developing countries in particular. Despite the efforts that have been made terms of equality of gender relations and changing laws, it is still difficult to identify this equality in the development. This thesis is part of development economics. Its main objective is to seek the equality of gender relations and their implementation for development in Morocco, through the experience of elected local authorities and the human capital of the Ministry of the Interior. The first part presents the general theoretical framework of economic approaches that are essential for our work of doctoral research. The second part describes the methodological and mobilized tools through the capabilities approach, human capital and discrimination. This section attempts to present the development from below by the role of elected local authorities and development across the top officials of the Central services of the ministry of interior so as to practice the equal gender relations

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of our research was to study the role and impact that ‘information and communication technologies’ and the MEC centers might have on the Uruguayan society. We want to examine how MEC and ICT usage could affect daily lives of marginalized people in Uruguay. We want to explore how it might benefit individuals living in small communities by evaluating indicators of positive impact of how ICT usage could strengthen capitals and increase freedom. Furthermore, our aim is to understand how digital literacy and the access to ICT’s can be related to democracy, and try to understand if greater individual empowerment also could enhance democracy. Method: For a period of eight weeks, from March 3rd to 28th of April 2014, we were in Montevideo and vicinity to gather material that we later have analyzed qualitatively. The material is based on observations in the field, interviews with various stakeholders, manuals and national policy documents concerning MEC, as well answers we received from an online survey. Main conclusions:We have found that the MEC centers and ICT, combined with education, could be an important tool to facilitate the inclusion of marginalized groups in the Uruguayan society. Our findings indicate that the MEC centers in Uruguay could contribute to the decentralization of the country and have a positive impact on gender- and generation equality. The result suggests that the centers could have a positive impact on democracy in Uruguay by teaching participants how to use e-governmental services as well as encouraging them to participate in online governmental websites. Furthermore, we found that MEC lets the local communities be in charge of their own development, which indicate that the sustainability of the project is increased as well as the positive development outcome. Through the MEC centers we found that both the freedom and the social capital of the participants were positively affected.

Abstract:
Businesses today face intense international competition, a heightened pace of development and shortened product life cycles. As a result, many researchers recommend firms collaborate and partner with other firms to succeed. With over a decade of research examining alliances and inter-firm collaboration, we know a great deal about the benefits and outcomes firms realize through collaboration. An important gap exists, however, in our understanding of the effect of partnering firms on collaborative outputs. This study attempts to address this gap by examining the success of collaborative new product development outputs. The study was a quasi-experimental study using archival, time-series data. Hypotheses were tested at the project level, defined as the product output from the collaborative development effort. Predictors were developed at both the firm and dyadic levels. Several findings emerged from this research. The primary finding is that roles of alliance partners impact which capability and capital benefits accrue. Firms functioning as a publisher benefit from increases in relevant experience. Firms functioning as a developer benefit from working in areas in which they have experience, but largely to the extent that the developer also generalizes their capabilities. One implication emerging from the capability findings suggests a need for configurational capability research. From a social capital conception, developers with high network centrality have a negative impact on the perceived quality of the final software product. Developers also benefit from embeddedness, products developed by developers in constrained networks outperformed products developed by developers in brokered networks.

This thesis focuses on strengthening financial management of community-based organisations (CBOs) in Papua New Guinea. Through the use of qualitative, arts-based, and participatory action research methodologies, the findings indicated that CBOs harnessed social capital and community relations to successfully implement their work. However, their relational engagements and needs were often not adequately captured in financial and organisational plans, leading to tensions between CBOs and donors. The findings contribute to literature on CBOs, capacity building and development partnerships by highlighting that strengthening financial management requires reciprocal understanding, sharing of power and responsibility and building mutual accountability between CBOs and donors.

Through qualitative research in the oil and gas sector, we identified a desire to control the direction and pace of innovation as the main driver for this type of investments. A new model and framework for CVC are presented. Contrary to the traditional model of CVC, which features a dyadic relation between corporate investor and venture entrepreneur, our model shows that CVC investments create a more complex conjoint of relations between multiple stakeholders. These relations challenge the neo-Schumpeterian model of competition. Using the grounded theory approach, we created a theoretical framework explaining and predicting outcomes of corporate venture capital other than learning. At firm level, our framework conceptualizes CVC programs as dynamic capabilities, and suggests a competitive advantage for the corporate investor through its ability to faster and better integrate the new technology. At market level, we proposed that CVC investments positively affect the pace of innovation in the market through an increased speed of acceptance of technologies supported by corporate investors.

Abstract:
Business growth has been a widely interesting topic among researchers throughout the years. Most research has emphasised growth as an outcome that considers different measures to growth, whereas the outcome of growth that reflects upon managing challenges when growing and growth as a process that refers to how firms adapt internally whilst growing have been much more neglected. As an organisation grows, human capital has been suggested as one of the most critical aspects to manage when firms need to develop knowledge, competencies, and skills beyond what already exists within the organisation. Small firms in comparison to their larger counterparts seldom have specific departments to manage human resources, which leaves room for interesting areas to understand how small firms can manage processes to develop human resources beyond those already existing as firms grow. As small firms grow and encounter various challenges in need of management, absorptive capacity considers means for managers to address growth challenges by realising the value of new and external knowledge to produce dynamic capabilities, which in turn enable firms to align resources to the changing environment of a growing organisation. Previous research highlights the need to develop a practical understanding of internal processes that managers apply when managing a wider range of competencies. The purpose of this study serves to create an understanding of how small firms that encounter growth challenges can manage human resources to develop necessary skills and competencies beyond existing means as organisations grow. To develop this understanding, this study develops a conceptual framework based upon human capital, absorptive capacity and dynamic capabilities with the guiding research question: How can small firms manage human resources when growing? Through a qualitative study with data collected through semi-structured interviews, this study concludes that small firms can manage human resources through various processes, in which organisational culture should serve as a foundation throughout the entire process of managing human resources. This study also concludes that as organisations grow, it is important to be aware of and question current processes to efficiently address challenges in changing environments. Furthermore, this study considers the importance of being an attractive firm and to manage human resources through means of defining a market to attract and acquire human resources when growing. With previous research highlighting the need to develop a more practical understanding of processes that managers utilise when managing a growing organisation, this study contributes to existing literature by emphasising the role of the manager throughout the process of managing human resources. The study also provides practical reasonings for small firms to remain efficient and survive in a market dominated by competition of larger organisations with financial resources to outcompete smaller and less established firms.

Business Intelligence (BI) is a topic that has attracted attention from both researchers and practitioners. Despite BI's promising possibilities, few organizations are able to transform BI-insights into actions. Thus, the purpose of this study was to understand: How organizations can transform BI insights into actions, and which capabilities impact this transformation. In order to obtain this understanding, a case-study was conducted. We interviewed six consultants from leading consultancy firms, and a practitioner who uses BI on a daily basis. Prior to this, the authors reviewed previous BI literature which suggests that BI needs to be combined with capabilities for employees to utilize BI. Microfoundations was used as a theoretical framework to identify important capabilities and how they relate to BI. The findings distinguished specific capabilities that impacts the ability to utilize BI. Capabilities such as communication, sponsorship, culture, and clear strategies &amp; goals, are important in order to better take advantage of BI. The conclusions are that hard skills (e.g. technical competencies), education and experience among the employees may not be as crucial as previously thought. This is because BI-systems are becoming more intuitive and easier to use.

Abstract:
In a knowledge based economy competitiveness is primarily based on the intangibles of a firm. But what relevance is actually given to the Management of organizational knowledge and intellectual Capital (KM/ICM) in the German economy? The Institute of Personnel Management and Leadership studies at the Chemnitz University of Technology has conducted a company survey on KM/ICM with a representative sample size of 3401 firms in order to capture the status-quo of KM/ICM- activities within the German economy. Additionally, two other main research questions have been addressed: - What are the potential drivers for the implementation of KM/ ICM? - How do KM/ ICM activities relate to organizational performance? A crucial study result reveals knowledge as a crucial production – and competitive factor in the german economy. Here, the implementation of KM/ICM is rather determined by business strategies and core competencies than firm characteristics like industry sector or firm size. Besides the findings, that KM–activities especially prevail in those firms with a predominant customer, employee and innovation orientated strategy, further KM/ICM drivers have been evaluated

Such consumers expect pre-conceived results, based on competitive priorities which can represent a quick response to their needs, in constant modification, and the delivery of products that are able to function properly and due to their purpose. Based on such assumptions, the present study had as main objective to understand if the existence of an alignment between the strategies of companies from the capital goods sector and its operational capabilities has any relation with their business performance. To achieve such objective, the study was divided in two phases, the first exploratory and with qualitative methodology, made with 7 participants from the researched sector, in order to contribute with the composition of the constructs of strategy, capabilities and performance, as well as to define the instrument of the second phase, that was descriptive and quantitative and applied to a sample of 85 respondents from the capital goods sector, selected through non-probabilistic methods, aimed to diagnose the relation between the strategy of the companies, its capabilities and performance. The results showed that the company strategies were connected to continuous improvement, equipment improvement, order process follow up, with activities such as planning meetings and approval steps, as well as suppliers qualification. The operational capabilities were composed by training and mix and volume production. From the results obtained it is possible to conclude that there is a relation between the proposed constructs and that the alignment of the identified strategies and capabilities had a total effect of 34,3% in the performance of the participants companies, represented by an improvement on the delivery and order cycle and reduction of productive problems and returns.<br>Entende-se que as estratégias adotadas pelas empresas, em um mercado competitivo e globalizado, como o verificado atualmente, definem como os processos internos serão desenvolvidos e operados de forma a proporcionar um determinado desempenho para seus clientes finais.

Abstract:
This thesis sets out to critically examine the field of higher education development, as one which is focused on socio-economic inequality and welfare, and determines educational purpose in poorer, or ‘developing’, countries accordingly. My question is whether mainstream development approaches to higher education are really contributing to the provision of more equal education services, or whether they risk reintroducing inequality by treating the priorities of poorer countries differently. To investigate whether there are educational values or purposes common to universities globally irrespective of socio-economic imperatives, I begin the study with a historiographical look at their growth in terms of both ideas of its purpose, and how purpose is realised in actuality. I then trace the emergence of the discourse of international development, and the role that higher education has come to play within it, showing how the field of international higher education development has simplified the notion of university purpose for its own devices. The thesis then looks at underlying assumptions about human nature, defined as the problem of humanism, common to both transcendent ideas of university purpose as well as the development discourse. To avoid the limitations of these assumptions, I argue that a theoretical approach is required that can engage with questions of hybridity and multiplicity in both the history and future of universities, without reducing those questions to abstract ideas. The approach I propose draws upon the dialogism of Mikhail Bakhtin, whose multi-layered understanding of language prevents any one understanding of another person, or of human nature more generally, being considered final. The educational implications for such an approach are finally explored in the concept of academic freedom, which is traditionally conceived of as a right, but is here reconceptualised also as a responsibility.

Abstract:
Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS)<br>Entrepreneurship has been regarded as a solution to various developmental challenges such as unemployment, inequality, and poverty, which are inherent among the marginalised populations. However, the high rate of failure of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) remain an impediment to the use of entrepreneurship as a means to ameliorate the challenges. This is especially the case among young entrepreneurs. In addition, given the imperativeness of financial literacy in the success of SMEs, this study determines the influences of financial literacy on entrepreneurial success within the marginalised communities. It also explores and identifies the reasons why failure rates are high among young entrepreneurs in the economically disadvantaged community of Khayelitsha, Cape Town. This study employs a concurrent mixed methods design, making use of both quantitative and qualitative data. A survey is conducted in Khayelitsha using the snowballing sampling technique due to difficulty in accessing young entrepreneurs. The quantitative data from the survey provides demographic and socioeconomic information on young entrepreneurs. The survey is also used to determine the level of financial literacy and business success of these entrepreneurs. The qualitative in-depth interviews, on the other hand, provide insights into the motivations of the entrepreneurs, their experiences and the causes of business failure.

Abstract:
Previous studies emphasize the need for greater theoretical-empirical deepening of the CD and AMB constructs, however in an isolated way. No previous research sought to analyze, in a coexisting way, the two indirect relations. The general objective of this thesis is to measure the impact of CDs and AMB as mediating variables of the relation between OE and PO. For this, a cross-sectional quantitative and descriptive research was carried out through the survey research strategy applied with 385 managers of medium and large companies exporting and importing the transformation sector located in the three southern states from the country. The choice of this segment was due to the representativeness of the researched sector and the industrial vocation of the southern region of Brazil. The research questionnaire used was validated from previous studies, and it was composed of 69 questions (for the measurement of the specific questions the 7-point Likert scale was used). The analysis of the results was based on descriptive statistics, Exploratory Factor Analysis (AFE), multiple linear regression, correlation, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (AFC) and Structural Equation Modeling (MEE) using the statistical software IBM® SPSS® AMOS. For the purpose of this study, it was possible to identify the following findings: strong mediation power of the constructs CDs and AMB; positive relationship between the latent variables OE and PO; the OE construct, through the variables proactivity and innovation, demonstrated a strong antecedent of CDs; the exploration and exploitation dimensions are important antecedents of the AMB variable; the CD construct contributes to a better performance of the firm; the variables absorptive capacity and innovation capacity were identified as subjacent elements of the CDs; the relationship with the stakeholders, growth in sales and profitability are key elements for the measurement of the PO; and, strategizing can be a connecting element between CDs and AMB. The study also presents a summarized theoretical framework composed of the four investigated constructs, associated to the exploration and exploitation dimensions in relation to resource management, skills, competences and core competence. Finally, the research reveals important contributions to future studies, identifies the main limitations of the work and suggests managerial implications for managers of export and import companies in the transformation sector of the states of Rio Grande do Sul/RS, Santa Catarina/SC and Paraná/PR.

Abstract:
In 2015, United Nations implemented seventeen Sustainable Development Goals along with 169 sub-targets with the ambition to transform the world through achieving sustainable development and, hence annihilate poverty. In light of the foregoing, both authoritative and non-governmental entities accentuated the significance of ‘financial inclusion’ which, in turn, has developed into an evangelical advocacy reminiscent of the extensive publicity that microfinance received at the end of last century which, in turn, has led to an unprecedented passion among philanthrocapitalists, transnational corporations, and other benefactors to financially and socially assist the impoverished. In order to attain the objectives enforced by the United Nations, it is essential to elevate the people located at the bottom of the social hierarchy by minimizing the wealth and gender inequalities that exist. By providing women with equal access to education, job opportunities, financial resources, and representation in economic and political decision- making processes, both domestic and international prosperity will follow. Upon providing access to microfinancial services, microfinance institutions and similar entities have developed into essential tools for empowering women. Academic evidence has previously illustrated a positive association between the probability of accessing these services and the possession of an adequate understanding of economic knowledge – financial literacy. However, the underlying mechanisms of financial literacy and their possible connections to the access of microfinance are complex processes that often have been neglected in current academia. Hence, the purpose of this study is to determine the significant factors of financial literacy and examine how they interplay with the access to microfinancial activities. Accordingly, the objective of this paper is to answer the following research question. How does financial literacy favor women’s access to microfinancial services in developing countries? In order to obtain a greater insight into the subject matter, this paper utilizes a single-case study of Hand in Hand Eastern Africa’s operations in Kenya. The empirical findings presented in this qualitative study were collected through semi-structured interviews with managers working on both a local and nationwide level. Upon analyzing the findings, the authors found support in the argument that it is essential for an individual to be financially literate in order to obtain microfinancial services such as microcredit, microinsurance, and loans in kind. Although external forces in the form of social capital, social learning, and dynamic capabilities do not impact the access to microfinance directly, the empirical evidence indicated that an indirect influence on financial literacy exists. A myriad of previous academia has gravitated to emphasize the correlation between financial literacy and women empowerment rather than justifying the association through the examination of the underlying mechanisms. Hence, this thesis should provide valuable acumen about the elements of financial literacy and how they influence the microfinancial machinery as well as women’s socio-cultural and economic empowerment.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the individual pathways within the process of accreditation of prior experience (VAE), fighting inequalities of qualification access. This new right makes people responsible to put work experience to advantage, through getting qualification on the basis of work and individual experience, without education. But, to open up a new legal way doesn’t make this right a reality. The aim is to observe phenomena of differentiations relative to the display of the VAE. We have enrich ressourcist and utilitarist hypothesis, which have been derived from labour market theories (Human Capital and Signalling Theories). We ask the question of the real display of the individual right of VAE and the notion of experience. Consequently, from the Capability perspective, we built an original framework to understand in what extent individual pathways depend on personal, environmental and social factors, not only experience which is expressed in number of years, as a rule in the Human Capital and Signalling Theories. These environmental, social and individual conversion factors establish the display of individual resources and rights within the VAE process. This set forms an individual structure of constraints and opportunities and determines the individual pathways. The Experience is multidimensional and diffused through these elements. This model, based on a national survey, highlights existence of different types of individual logics of choices, which means different real possibilities of actions, more or less constricted, and underlines overestimated, underestimated and invisible inequalities

Abstract:
Purpose -- Given the enduring COVID-19 pandemic, this thesis set out to reveal an updated perspective of the service-oriented small business experience, particularly in their access and choice of financial resources to fund operations and adapt marketing strategy. By the time this study started, it was clear which businesses had been rising with the new tides of swelled categorical demand vs. those that were persevering like embers in a 'slow burn' state of low income against persistent expenses. Therefore, the research sought to compare the results of marketing experimentation with current plans for increasing resiliency, or enabling robust growth, coming out of the pandemic.  Methodology / Design / Approach -- As the quantitative understanding of the business impacts had been generalized, a closer look was needed into what entrepreneurs and small business leaders were thinking about in the present moment, by reflecting on factors for survival / thriving, until this point and going forward. To capture this wide range of perspectives and strategies in formulation, qualitative methods with a diverse set of businesses were selected. Theoretically, customer-centric marketing principles were employed, focusing on three intangible firm resources (of the resource-based view): 1) Stakeholder Relationships; 2) Brand Equity and 3) Knowledge / Capabilities. Findings -- With the realization that adequate financing is inaccessible and government support perceivably unreliable, small businesses naturally tested several emergent strategies within the limits of their available resources. During times of crisis and radical change, as entire industry ecosystems are reassuming their fundamentals, companies have the opportunity to maximize and develop their resources, in alignment with differing and changing customer demands.  Practical Implications -- While the recommendations are tailored for small business and optimistically many, cities are also suggested to take a resource-based VRIO (Value, Rarity, Imitability and Organizability) approach to supporting the economic value and potential of their retail, restaurant and service-oriented business communities.  Originality / Value -- Applying a modern customer-centric view for the small business resources most potentially valuable and developable, this research contributes a unique crisis-borne framework, which may be conceptually used as a hotbed -- by both internal and external (i.e. municipalities, partners and customers) stakeholders -- for ideating novel marketing strategies and supporting business growth / resilience.  Keywords: Adaptation, Crisis Management, Financial Liquidity, Access to Capital, Government Aid, Alternative Finance, Marketing Strategy, Resource-based View (RBV), Customer-Centric, Stakeholder View, Brand, Authenticity, Knowledge, Capabilities, Marketing Management, Marketing-Finance Interface, Paid Marketing, Organic Marketing, Customer Loyalty, Community and Decision-Making

Abstract:
Setting up a new business that can successfully cater to international markets is a dream of many entrepreneurs. In the search for guidelines that would help potential entrepreneurs to grow and survive in global markets, research on international new ventures has been developing extensively in the last fifteen years. Social networks and unique knowledge resources spurring from them have been recognized as essential to the development of new ventures. However, our knowledge is still fairly limited as to how international new ventures make use of their social capital on the path to success. The concept of dynamic capabilities that make network-originated resource acquisition and transformation possible has mostly been absent from the international entrepreneurship research. This study is based on the assumption that it is not the access to unique knowledge resources provided by social networks that makes new ventures competitive and market-fit. It is rather how international new ventures assimilate and leverage these resources into evolutionary fitness, or growth and survival. The two distinctive roles are fulfilled by a hierarchy of classes of dynamic capabilities. A new research framework in the international entrepreneurship field, based on dynamic capability and on social capital theories, is introduced to uncover the influence and interaction effects of classes of capabilities in assimilating and leveraging knowledge originating from firms’ social capital. This dissertation is an attempt to provide an explanation of complementary, substitutive, and joint roles that social capital and dynamic capabilities play in achieving evolutionary fitness and sustainability in international new ventures. A very distinctive pattern of structural, cognitive, and relational social capital is identified as enhancing the chances of survival of international new ventures. Accounting for differences in growth, firms achieving higher evolutionary fitness are found to benefit from the joint role of two classes of dynamic capabilities and from the simultaneous pursuit of multiple paths to success. On the other hand, firms with lower evolutionary fitness are limited by their extensive deployment of assimilative capabilities and use fewer paths to evolutionary fitness. In consequence, the study also discusses the negative impact of dynamic capabilities that is related to the diminishing returns from their deployment in the pursuit of evolutionary fitness. A multi-method and multi-stage approach that combines retrospective and real-time investigations of international new ventures from the low-tech industry was used to evaluate 3 propositions and an additional observation. The empirical analysis involved 6 in-depth longitudinal case studies, social network data, survey and electronic communication data. The findings provide strong support and a significant extension to the propositions in addition to offering theoretical and managerial implications.<br>published_or_final_version<br>Business<br>Doctoral<br>Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract:
Mega events such as the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games present unique opportunities to increase the economic and social capital required by destinations to be competitive on the global tourism stage. Engaging Games and community stakeholders in the networks needed to organize and deliver such events is central to creating sustained and positive legacies. Network building and maintenance can occur at a variety of levels and scales. Effective and sustained networks depend on and are shaped by the social and reputational capital created through the process of managing various dimensions of the event. One of the more recent Games’ dimensions used as a vehicle for creating social capital is the Cultural Olympiad. This dissertation creates and tests the utility of a conceptual model in identifying how event organizers strategically select stakeholders and nurture network relations to build the reputational capital needed for sustained competitiveness. It builds this model based on premises and principles emerging from literature related to corporate social responsibility, social capital development, reputational capital creation, Olympic mega-event legacies, tourism destination branding and community based sustainability planning. The study tests the model’s usefulness through a case study of the stakeholders, networks, and outcomes created in the development and delivery of Whistler’s portion of the 2010 Winter Games Cultural Olympiad – ‘Whistler Live!’. It explores the ways in which Whistler engaged its stakeholders and partners so as not only to meet its immediate Olympic goals, but also to contribute the longer term reputation and sustainability of the resort community.

Abstract:
In the last decades, the concept of social capital has gained increasing popularity in economics. Yet substantial ambiguity exists about how to assess the "social" aspect of human life and what meaning to attribute to the term "capital". To shed a new light on the concept, I develop a new conceptual framework and I make it operational for analysis and policy in the context of development by investigating issues of gender empowerment. From a theoretical perspective, this conceptual framework defines social capital as the amount of expectations and obligations that individuals accumulate when they interact and identifies its constituting dimensions: homogeneity among individuals, frequency of contacts and hierarchization of relationships. These dimensions are responsible for the function of coordination, attributed to social capital, as well for the wide range of outcomes observed in the literature. This framework is then operationalized through an index of social capital at the individual level in Indonesia. A connection with the capability approach to welfare economics is established to better understand those channels through which social capital affects individual well-being. At the empirical level, an investigation of the determinants of women empowerment in the household is consequently proposed, with social capital as the main explanatory variable. This work shows that the concept of social capital is fundamental to explore individuals' agency and well-being and that it has both positive and negative effects on women empowerment

In a fast changing world, almost all firms are trying to establish uniqueness in order to maintain competitive advantages. At the same time, various knowledge bases and interaction networks seem to replace tangible assets and financial values and are gradually becoming the sources of innovation. However, whether a firm’s investment in internal network members, culture and knowledge can really improve its innovation capabilities is worth of research and discussion. In the past, relevant research about intellectual capital and innovation ability was to assess key performance index and to measure company performance in innovation. The research of the relation between the two topics is rarely seen. Therefore, this article is investigate the below topics: (1) Discussion on the relationships among human capital, organizational capital, and social capital; (2) To explore the relationships among human capital, organizational capital, social capital and innovation capabilities; (3) to provide some academic and practical conclusions for future research purpose.

Abstract:
博士<br>國立中山大學<br>人力資源管理研究所<br>98<br>ABSTRACT As enterprises have increased the demand for logistics services, the role of logistics service providers (LSPs) as home bases for merchandise transportation and distribution has consequently become increasingly important. Therefore, how to strengthen the logistics capability and promote the logistics performance has become an important topic. In addition, traditionally the perspective of treating tangible assets as the location of firm’s value has been gradually diminished. The intangible intellectual capital is increasingly playing a pivotal position for the firm’s performance. Researchers studied the field of intellectual capital argued that intellectual capital was the main source of organizational competitive advantages. Besides, they thought that the better the intellectual capital a company has, the better the business can have the ability to generate performance. However, researchers seldom distinguished static intellectual capital from dynamic capability for utilizing intellectual capital. Whereas, this study proposed that these two constructs were different concepts, and would like to explore the impact of utilizing intellectual capital on logistics performance. Consequently, this study integrated the concept of RBT and dynamic capability to offer a conceptual model, a survey of LSPs was undertaken in order to examine the relationships among intellectual capital, logistics capabilities and firm performance, using the structural equation modeling technique (SEM) analysis method. Previous researches had concerned the tangible resources, capabilities and firm performance, however, less from the perspective of intangible resources to study this subject. Hence, after reviewing the relevant literature, we conclude human capital, structural capital, and relational capital as dimensions of intellectual capital. Furthermore, from the empirical results of related scholars’ researches, this study argues that it has a directly significant effect of logistics capabilities on logistics performance, and logistics capabilities are the critical factors for utilizing intellectual capital. Moreover, this research proposes that logistics capabilities are complex constructs. Therefore, we should clarify these constructs and provide an appropriate measurement tool with reliability and validity if we would like to measure them. Consequently, logistics capabilities were identified: service capability, innovation capability, and flexibility capability. Finally, after clarifying the definition and extracting the components of each variable from the literature review, this research deduced several hypotheses and formed the research framework. In this study, we take logistics service providers in Taiwan as the study sample. A total of 1,033 questionnaires were hand delivered and the remaining 109, valid and complete, were used for quantitative analysis. The useable response rate was 10.6%. A structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was employed to test the research hypotheses. Results indicated that structural capital, relational capital, and logistics capabilities had a significant positive effect on logistics performance. Results also indicated that human capital, structural capital, and relational capital had a positive effect on LSPs’ logistics capabilities. While human capital was not found to have a direct positive effect on LSPs’ logistics performance, it was found to have an indirect effect on logistics performance mediated by logistics capability. According to the results, LSPs should enhance the intangible resource - intellectual capital, further heighten their understanding of logistics capabilities and identify how such capabilities may affect logistics performance, therefore develop effective logistics strategies.

Abstract:
One of the basic assumptions associated with the theoretical model as described in this article is that an organisation (a system) can acquire capabilities through intentional strategic and operational initiatives. This intentional capability-building process also implies that the organisation intends to use these capabilities in a constructive way to increase competitive advantage for the firm. The creation of conducive and attractive conditions for enhancing a firm’s capability-building process is central to the theoretical model as described in this article. The key building blocks that create favourable conditions for the development of organisational capabilities from an Intellectual Capital perspective are defined in the theoretical model and consist of the following five constructs: - A Strategic Architecture that provides guidance on the strategic intent, focus and boundaries of the organisation. - An Intellectual Capital Framework that creates a basis for a normative-, strategic- and operational view to stimulate ideas on how to make intellectual capital a practical reality and to utilise these insights in the development of the organisation’s core capabilities. - A Core Capability Framework that reflects the content and processes related to the identification, description, evaluation and assumptions associated with the firm’s core capabilities. The Core Capability Framework also facilitates the integration of the concepts “core capabilities” and “intellectual capital”. - An Operationalisation Framework to leverage core capabilities from an Intellectual Capital perspective in a pragmatic way to realise tangible competitive benefits not only from individual capabilities, but also through the conscious collective use of bundles of capabilities. - A change enablement process that stimulates knowledge flows between the above key constructs of the conceptual model. This creates the basis for cognitive and emotional leverages to increase the potential of an organisation to successfully implement a strategic approach to the management of core capabilities from an Intellectual Capital perspective. Raising the awareness and capacity of the organisation on the above five constructs creates the basis for an increase in the potential to make positive progress on this strategic journey of discovery to manage the growth of intellectual capital in a holistic way by focusing on core capabilities.<br>Prof. Koos Uys

Hence, the organization consequently builds and sustains its competitive advantage in the industry. For the dynamic capability, the enterprise must efficiently make use of the career capitals of employees: Knowing-how, Knowing-why and Knowing-whom. The enterprise shall use the strategy of knowledge to explore new knowledge and apply existing knowledge in response to changing competitive environment. For developing specific understanding and create more valuable knowledge, the enterprise needs to integrate the career capital of the internal organization through Exploration and Exploitation for searching new areas of organizational learning, experimentation and innovation. Therefore, it could evolve a new dynamic capability. It’s a valuable subject for discussing whether Exploration and Exploitation under the career capitals play a key role in the process of the dynamic capabilities. The empirical results of this research indicate that (a) manager expatriates’ Knowing-how of career capital has a positive impact on Exploitation in the international alliance; (b) manager expatriates’ Knowing-whom of career capital has a positive impact on Exploitation and Exploration in the international alliance; (c) manager expatriates’ Exploration has a positive impact on the dynamic capabilities in the international alliance. Therefore, the results of this study show that the Knowing-how, Knowing-why and Knowing-whom of career capitals have different impacts on Knowledge Learning. In addition, Exploitation and Exploration have significant but different impacts on organizations’ dynamic capabilities. In order to have dynamic capability, enterprises must effectively adopt employees’ knowledge, technology and capability (knowing-how), trigger employees’ potential and satisfy employees’ expectation of development (knowing-why). Therefore, they should continuously expand with the limited resources and capacity. However, in order to survive in the competitive market, enterprises must integrate, construct and distribute internal and external resources to establish long-term competitive advantages. Thus, this study explores the relationship among career capital, knowledge management and dynamic capability of organizations of international high shareholding structure. According to validated results of this study, (一) dispatched supervisors’ knowing-why positively influences applied knowledge management and exploratory knowledge of organizations with international high shareholding structure; (二) dispatched supervisors’ applied knowledge management and exploratory knowledge management positively influence dynamic capability of international high shareholding structure. Hence, results of this study show that three kinds of career capital, knowing-how, knowing-why and knowing-whom, influence knowledge management differently. Significance of enhancement of applied and exploratory knowledge management on dynamic capability of organizations is different. Thus, multi-national enterprises adopt career capital and knowledge management as measures for business development and enhancing dynamic capability, in order to strengthen their competitiveness.

Abstract:
博士<br>國立東華大學<br>企業管理學系<br>102<br>The importance of intellectual capital in organizations is well accepted. In prior research, Intellectual capital has been empirically found to significantly affect the firm’s product innovation performance. We suggest that the firm’s knowledge learning capabilities mediate the effect of intellectual capital on product innovation performance. Therefore, we propose a theoretical model of how two knowledge learning capabilities (knowledge exploration and knowledge exploitation) mediate the effect of three types of intellectual capital(human capital, organizational capital, and social capital)on product innovation performance. Another issue in this study is to examine how responsive and proactive market orientations interact with knowledge exploitative and knowledge exploratory learning to affect product innovation performance. The interplay between market orientation and organizational learning has found to reinforce the performance of product innovation, little evidence exists regarding which types of market orientation work best with knowledge exploitative or knowledge exploratory learning to improve product innovation performance. Our model is tested using survey data on 185 high-tech firms in Taiwan. The empirical results provide strong support for our theoretical model. First, knowledge learning capabilities mediate the effect of intellectual capital on product innovation performance. Second, human capital and social capital contribute to organizational capital. Third, product innovation performance is elevated when knowledge exploitative learning is bundled with responsive market orientation and when knowledge exploratory learning is bundled with proactive market orientation. Finally, product innovation performance will decrease when knowledge exploitative learning is complemented with proactive market orientation and when knowledge exploratory learning is complemented with responsive market orientation.

Besides, they thought that the better the IC a company has, the better the business can have the ability to generate innovative performance. However, the relationship between IC and innovative performance needs to be explored further, because of being inconsistent with some practical cases. This research proposed that the view of IC could not explain appropriately why organizations could generate better innovative performance in the dynamic environment. Besides, the scholars who studied IC seldom distinguished “static IC” from “dynamic ability for utilizing IC”. Whereas, this research proposed that these two constructs were different concepts, and would like to explore the impact of utilizing IC on innovative performance. On the other hand, in order to explain why some enterprises could keep their competitive advantages in the rapidly changing environment, some scholars proposed the viewpoints of dynamic capabilities (DCs). This research argues that it has a directly significant effect of DCs on innovative performance, and DCs are the critical factors for utilizing IC. This research proposes that DCs are complex constructs. Therefore, we should clarify these constructs and provide an appropriate measurement tool with reliability and validity, if we would like to measure them. This research adopted qualitative and quantitative researches simultaneously to demonstrate these arguments. After clarifying the definition of DCs and extracting the components of DCs from the literature review, this research deduced several hypotheses and formed the research framework. This research selected the research team of N University for developing wireless nano-bio systems as a case, and thoroughly explored two of its radically innovative projects, including Anti-SARS R&D project and sensor chip for wireless nano-biotach R&D project. Through observing their response to the rapidly changing external environment, this research illustrated the impact of IC and DCs of R&D team on its innovative performance. By the two-stage observation, analysis and induction of this case, we could understand the preliminary power in explaining this research model, and amend the hypotheses. As for quantitative research, first, according to the scale developing steps, suggested by Hinkin (1998), this research developed the measurement tool of DCs with five stages and three samples to measure the concept of DCs precisely. Secondly, after developing the measurement scale of DCs, which surpassed the acceptable level for reliability, content validity, goodness of fit, convergent validity and discriminate validity, this research utilized the third sample testing the hypotheses to confirm the relationships among IC, DCs, and innovative performance of the R&D teams. The results showed that the concept of DCs is a multi-level and multi-dimension construct, which is composed of combinative capabilities, absorptive capacity and flexibility. In addition, it can be measured by three-dimension and eight-factor scale with nineteen items. As for the hypothesis testing, there were nine hypotheses in this research. Seven of them were supported, however, two of them were not supported. The results confirmed the main arguments of this research. That is, it doesn’t have a significant effect of IC on R&D team’s innovative performance. However, it does have a significant effect of DCs on R&D team’s innovative performance. In addition, the results showed that combinative capabilities and absorptive capacity are mediators. The combinative capabilities fully mediated the effect of absorptive capacity on innovative performance. The absorptive capacity also fully mediated the effects of human capital and relationship capital on the combinative capabilities. Meanwhile, the results showed that flexibility is a moderator, which enhanced the effects of different ICs on absorptive capacity. Finally, this research got two special observations. First, there are two dimensions of R&D energy promotion for R&D teams with DCs. Secondly, it is a type of “flexible sphere organization” for the R&D teams with DCs, so that they can respond to the rapidly changing external environment.

Abstract:
博士<br>國立中興大學<br>企業管理學系所<br>97<br>Recent research contends that resources transformed by dynamic capabilities facilitate the creation of competitive advantage. However, this argument merely raises new questions, including the origin of resources, the processes by which they are transformed so as to benefit firms, and the relationship between resource abundance and competitive advantage. In resource learning theory, managers must recombine firm resources, since managing resources and capabilities is essential to sustainable competitive advantage. This study applies the concept of resource learning theory, in which the management of resources delineates the manner in which resources are acquired and accumulated, while the resource of management implies that a firm transforms resources using dynamic capabilities for the sake of improving performance. Dynamic capabilities comprise two transformational mechanisms, sensemaking and reconfiguring. That is to say, firms convert resources through communication, interpretation, analysis, and reconfiguration. Furthermore, previous studies have failed to understand the “black box” involved in using valuable, rare, inimitable, and nonsubstitutable resources to gain and maintain competitive advantage. This study has attempted to untangle that black box and explain how these resources can be obtained and managed to create superior product innovation performance for firms, in turn helping them develop competitive advantage. The components of dynamic capabilities proposed in this study help fill this void. This study investigates the moderating role of dynamic capabilities in the relationships between internal and external social capital and product innovation performance, an area with potential to explain the divergent empirical results contained in the existing literature on the relationship between social capital and performance. This study used hierarchical moderated regression analysis for hypotheses testing. Employing an original data set comprising 169 firms operating in the Taiwan Hsinchu Science Park, this study found that the combination of dynamic capabilities and internal/external social capital helps improve product innovation performance. Furthermore, internal social capital is positively related to product innovation performance, but no equivalent relationship for external social capital. Overall, these findings contribute to better understanding that “the key to the management of resources is the resource of management” (Mahoney, 1995, p. 92).

Abstract:
碩士<br>長榮管理學院<br>經營管理研究所<br>90<br>Abstract In the current times of intellectual economy, invisible assets, such as human resourse and knowledge, etc. will be the future competitive advantage for an enterprise. Thus it becomes more and more important for cultivation of talents and continued learning and updating our knowledge. It depends on the fully play of human resources to innovate, accumulate, proliferate and apply knowledge. Enhancing human resources management effectiveness through knowledge management will further control the competitive advantage in this information times and that will be the only way to make enterprise successful in the future. Given the fact that shortage of high quality of talents and alternative for effective knowledge management is one the first and most important problems an enterprise faces in the changing environment, and on the other hand, as many scholars pointed out, one of the biggest problems in the management of knowledge is the sharing of knowledge because its key to success is not technology but “people”. Therefore, this study takes intellectual workers’ competence as the human capital and selects top 1000 big enterprises in Taiwan in 2001 listed by China Credit Information Service (CCIS) as main body for research to empirically testify the relations and interactions among human capital, enterprise’s competence of knowledge management and human resources management effectiveness. By doing so, the study hopes to understand if the input of high quality of human resources is helpful to enhance an enterprise’s competence of the management of knowledge and the human resources management effectiveness. The study is also trying to explore the role the competence of the knowledge management plays between human capital and human resources management effectiveness. The results of this research can be the basis of any enterprise’s future strategies and directions when it conducts activities of management. The study analyzed questionnaires responded by 167 enterprises through one-way ANOVA, Canonical Correlation Analysis, Multiple Regression Analysis and Path Analysis. The main results are as follows: 1.The key point an enterprise should emphasize on human capital is the professional competence of intellectual workers. 2.The enterprise must have the input of high quality of human resources to enhance competence of management of knowledge. It is most urgent for an enterprise to store up high quality human capital in the organization. 3.One way an enterprise operator should go is to deeply root the competence of knowledge management to enhance the core competitiveness. 4.One of important challenges faced by the management of human resources lies in practicing systems and operations of human resources and it can be to make sure company’s key intelligence not revealing.
