The article studies theoretical and practical aspects of the oil prices impact on the import of capital goods in an oil-exporting country. Based on the two-step Engel-Granger procedure for cointegration analysis, the relationship between the real volume of imported capital goods per capita and the real price of Azeri light oil is examined. It has been determined that the real volume of imported capital goods per capita is highly dependent on the oil price, and the volatility of the oil price also affects the volatility of imports of capital goods. The broad-based decline in the relative price of machinery and equipment, in turn, was driven by the faster productivity growth in the capital goods producing sectors relative to the rest of the economy, and dee

This analysis is particularly relevant to understand the Brazilian case, which presented a strong rise in the relative price of capital, exactly at the time the country was adopting import substitution policies and restrictions to the trade of capital goods. The aim of my research is to determine the appropriate cost of capital of privatized and regulated price-capped utilities. The monopoly status of the utilities meant that the privatization model suffered from a market failure. The proposed remedy was regulation. Hence, the estimation of the market determined rate of return needs to incorporate the total risk faced by a regulated company. This research provides a frame-work which can be used to "operationalize" the theory of privatization and to consider the impact of regulation on firm's risk, cost of capital and value. AbstractThe efficient markets hypothesis states that stock prices incorporate all relevant information instantaneously. However, investor behaviour is not always fully in line with theoretical predictions. The mechanism behind efficient markets is that a sufficient number of analysts pay attention to newly arriving information, judge it value relevant, and trade on that information. In that way, the new information gets priced in. But there is evidence that learning takes time and that adaptive markets are a better description than efficient markets. In particular, it seems that analysts have
