Full textSince its outbreak in March 2011, the Syrian conflict has displaced more than 12 million individuals, who found themselves leaving their homes to seek refuge elsewhere. Among these people, 6.3 million are internally displaced and 5.3 million have left Syria, mostly for Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. This paper explores the migration trajectories of Syria n refugees exiled in the Middle East and granted access to a resettlement program in Canada. Although some studies on refugee trajectories have mobilized the notion of social class, very few have taken a direct interest in its influence on the migratory process itself. Recent research reiterated the importance of considering social class as a variable in the analysis of migration trajectories by showing how the choice of itinerary seems to be dependent on the migrants’ resources, notably their economic and social resources. Thus, this project is looking at the impact of social class on the exile trajectories of Syrian refugees that resettled in Canada and proposes to introduce the analysis of social class in terms of access to different forms of capital — economic, social, cultural and spatial — and how belonging to a certain social class influences these trajectories. The results of our study show that, initially, during the migration to the first host country, access to resources influences positively the trajectory and experience of Syrians in exile in such a way that it favors individuals belonging to more privileged social classes. However, with regard to the process of resettlement in Canada, the results suggest the opposite. In fact, it is a greater vulnerability, characterized by limited access to resources, that inversely influences the trajectories of exile so as to favor the individual belonging to a more precarious class.

Full textOur objective is to examine the role played by immigrant cultural associations in the integration of their members, with an association of Togolese migrants in Canada (CTC) as our case study. Our approach shows that Togolese migrants are particularly influenced by cultural associations in their social and economic integration, both on arrival and later, during the job search process. They are influenced by the CTC and other associations that share their cultural referents. All of our respondents acknowledge that they need help in their integration process. Our analysis allowed us to understand that if the CTC facilitates the social and economic integration of its members in Quebec, it does so by offering them a culturally familiar environment that allows them to affirm their identity in Quebec. The meetings organized by the CTC allow members to create and reinforce links of solidarity that have a positive influence on their integration.

Full textEngineering techniques, during the 1960-1970 years, have been deployed in the constructionof huge road infrastructures for the social and human welfare by the use of science andtechnique. Nowadays, the engineering vantage has change. At the first sight, transition seemsclear. Today, users don’t have to conform their behaviours to the road environmenttransformations. It belongs to engineers to build road infrastructures adapted to the variousdriver’s behaviours. The incorporation of road safety audit in the French Ministry of Ecology,Sustainable Development and Sea (MEEDDM) and in the Quebec Ministry of Transports(MTQ), exemplifies this turning point. First, road safety audit is applied in a new frameworkcontrol system for the expertise independence purpose. Second, it introduces a newengineering approach called proactive approach. This one breaks with the previousapproaches by transcending technical control with the use of professional experiences anddriver’s knowledge in order to adapt infrastructure to driver’s behaviours. This cognitivetransformation will be the object of our research. Specifically, we will study the changeleaded by experiential knowledge. Paradoxically, we will note traditional cognitiveframeworks, which pertain to French and Quebec cultural engineering, in a renewedengineering approach. Then we will show that road safety audit incorporation more underlinea transformation of the expert social role than a cognitive change. This social rolemodification reflects to new forms of state action legitimacy. Indeed, considering driver’sbehaviours particularities and introducing an independent control system will show roadsafety audit incorporation as the exercise of contemporary legitimacies of state action

Full textThe rise of an elite private philanthropy is one of the main highlights of the past two decades. Evolving more and more in a partnership logic with governments and community groups, philanthropy, and most specifically "investment philanthropy", is a major player in the emergence of "social governance". From the cases of the Harlem Children's Zone, a non-profit organization in New York and the Fondation Lucie et André Chagnon in Quebec, this comparative study analyzes how investment philanthropy replicates the donor’s influence within social governance, how funded groups manage to demonstrate some forms of agency allowing them to discuss and negotiate with the donors, and how the triangular relationship between philanthropic, community and public actors affects the development of social policies. Keywords: elite philanthropy; investment philanthropy; social governance; social policies.

Full textThis doctoral dissertation in North American studies aims to study the evolutions of the family between 1969 and 2005 and their impact on societies in the United States, Canada and Quebec. From the 1970s onwards, the disappearance of the traditional postwar family gave way to the liberalization of sexual and family behaviors and to a new distribution of sex roles, leading to a diversification of family structures in North America. Three defining features must be taken into account, in order to identify the distinctive cultural and structural characteristics of the United States, Canada and Quebec: how these evolutions have been integrated into sociodemographic behaviors, how public opinion has accepted them, in its attitudes and representations, and how governments have taken them into account. The divergent treatment of the family issue in these three societies reveals deeper ideological fractures, a conclusion which goes against the theory of an ideological standardization of North America. The central role religion plays in the United States entails a moral positioning of public opinion and political leaders with regards to the family, whereas Canadians and Quebeckers have a more social – and thus a more liberal – perception. Freed from the influence of the Roman Catholic Church since the Quiet Revolution, Quebec has played a leading role in Canada’s family progressivism; nevertheless, the distinctiveness of the rest of Canada, compared to American social conservatism, cannot be overshadowed

The most important environmental challenges, particularly climate change, are much more social than technical, because it is mainly our way of life that is at the heart of the question. Can we make the necessary changes? What are the main difficulties to overcome? How should governments act? To help answer these questions, we chose to interview twelve former ministers responsible for environmental issues in order to understand the reasons for their actions, as well as the representations that underlie them. In both France and Quebec, a minister must take into account the perceptions and representations of citizens and those of the various groups with which he or she is in contact (lobby groups, media, local elected representatives, etc.), as well as the objectives of the government and those of his or her political party. The room for maneuver is narrow, which explains in large part why the ministers we interviewed all acted a little in the same way. They have all tried to do their best to protect the environment and the welfare of their fellow citizens, but without significantly affecting their way of life or the established order, while being generally aware that the challenges ahead will very soon require much more difficult decisions. Political sociology explains that political decisions in our democratic societies are collective constructions of actors in interaction, and thus confirms the results of our analysis. The political actions of former ministers can also be interpreted in the light of the three logics of action described by François Dubet. Moreover, from an interactionist point of view, where the meaning of objects is created by interaction, action is difficult when this meaning is not the same for different actors; this is what we have observed for long-term environmental issues that are perceived very differently by citizens and ministers.

Full textSince 1980, workplace sociology studies have taken an interest in subjectivity in the workplace as a mean of understanding social issues. In a similar fashion, this thesis deals with the way in which the educational management approach promotes engagement, and more particularly engagement as part of a regime based on the mobilization of subjectivities. It is generally conceded that employee mobilization is the classic realm of human resources management (HRM). But is this also true in other fields of organization? Is mobilization valued as highly elsewhere? The assumption is made by Tremblay et al. (2005) who propose a model of analysis based on four organizational fields 1) practices in HRM; 2) work organization; 3) leadership and; 4) vision, mission, objectives and values as so many levers to spur employee mobilization. The main objective of this thesis is to analyze HRM training manuals to establish whether the Tremblay et al. (2005) model is used widely in educational management literature without, however, assuming that this is reflected in concrete work situations. This thesis makes a triple contribution. It shows that employee mobilization and aspects related to it (enablement, motivation, sense of belonging and commitment) are portrayed as central to the new HRM practices by educational management literature in the areas of practices, work organization, leadership, vision, mission, objectives and values. Moreover, it reveals that mobilization is viewed as a source of emancipation – insofar as it is described as a vector of self-realization for the employee and, parallel to this, a path towards profitability for the business. Lastly, the thesis shows that beyond this vast attempt to mobilize subjectivity, educational management literature is the medium of a true work ethos that encourages the strong centrality of professional activity, experience as an end in itself and work relations based on a subjective transaction between both parties. In short, this ethos follows the principles of contemporary management norms. The thesis concludes with an examination of a set of reflections on the individual and social consequences of subjectivity engagement norms disseminated by contemporary management discourse

Full textOur study focuses on how the junior and senior social sciences researchers in Quebec establish their networks of co-authorships and form their discursive interpretation of their collaborative activities face to the impact of the university institutional change during the period 1990-2009. Notably, our research shows that the creation of networks and scientific collaboration by co-authorship can be identified as "professional adjustments". These "professional adjustments" represent a resource of social capital that can be mobilized and that may produce benefits for the researchers. Therefore our research is related to the sociology of sciences. This approach was operationalized by the study of 15 members of a University research center in the province of Quebec, and their network of 447 co-authors (including the researchers of the study), and through the application of 7 interviews with junior and senior researchers from the center. From a qualitative perspective, our study identifies the discursive meaning provided by the researchers about their collaboration and participation in co-authorship networks. On the other hand, the structural analysis of networks shows the individual connections and forms of interpretation - especially the graph theory and its measures of centrality (the degree centrality, the betweenness centrality and the eigenvector centrality) - as well as the homophilic degree among researchers. Finally, our statistical analysis shows the correlation of study periods and socio-professional characteristics of the researchers studied (gender, academic status, institutional affiliation, discipline, countries, regions of Canada and city where the researchers work). In particular, our results show that each research category has its own structural and discursive features regarding its networks and its collaboration practices. These findings confirm that the senior researchers retained and obtained more benefits from their co-authorship network than their junior peers, through the mobilization of their social capital, which allow them as well, to better adapt themselves to the institutional change and to manage more effectively their collaborative work at the international, but especially at the local arenas.

Full textThis thesis focuses on the work of Quebec health and social services centre (CSSS) managers following the implementation of this sector’s reform in 2003, by the Minister at that time, Philippe Couillard. The re-engineering of the state in which this reform occurred was based on a certain representation of public organizations inspired by the New Public Management (NPM). In concrete terms, the reform has profoundly changed the context in which manager’s work in these organisations. In this context, the objective of this research was to understand the impact of this reform on the nature of the work being performed by health and social services centre (CSSS) managers. Using a micro-sociological approach and by adopting a comprehensive epistemological position, we were interested in examining how managers define their work in terms of the role they play within the organization. Moreover, we attempted to understand whether we are witnessing a change or a consolidation in their work representation following the reform. Methodologically, we chose to conduct a multiple case study. We selected two CSSS’s and we conducted forty-nine semi-structured interviews with managers from these CSSS. In order to identify the representation managers have of their work two ideal types representing two opposing work representation were created. These ideal types have allowed us to determine that we are witnessing a homogenization of managers’ representation of their work. In addition, following the Couillard reform, health and social services centre (CSSS) managers are more likely to adhere to a managerial representation of their role. Above all, this thesis shows how this change takes place. It appears that the CSSS structure leads to working conditions that promote management work representation to some degree and impede others. Moreover, this new structure and the working conditions that accompany it have pushed the balance of power among managers. In doing so, certain sub-groups see their representations valued, and are able to impose them on their colleagues. If some managers are skeptical about these changes, it appears that very few of them have the means to resist.
