Full textThis thesis tackles two different problems in Iwasawa theory. The first onedeals with the annihilator of even K-groups of number fields' rings of integers. The Coates-Sinnott conjecture predicts that a certain Stickelberger element is contained in the annihilator ; we check this property for some components in the abelian semi-simple case. This generalizes the previously known results. The second problem is the study of the cokernel of the capitulation maps associated with the (p)-classgroups in the cyclotomic Zp-extension of a number field, where "p" is an odd prime. Under Gross's Conjecture, we prove by various methods that these cokernels stabilize from a certain integer n0 et we determine the Kummer dual of their inductive limit. These results noticeably improve upon Ichimura's

Full textIn this thesis, we focus on the set Int (OK) of integer-valued polynomials over OK, the ring of integers of a number field K. According to G. Pólya, a basis (fn) of the OK-module Int (OK) is said to be regular if for each n, deg(fn) = n. A field K such that Int (OK) has a regular basis is said to be a Pólya field and the Pólya group of number field K is a subgroup of the class group of K which can be considered as a measure of the obstruction for a field being a Pólya field. We study the Pólya group of a compositum L = K1K2 of two galoisian extensions K1/Q and K2/Q and we link it to the behaviour of the ramification of primes in K1/Q and K2/Q. We apply these results to number fields with small degree in order to enlarge the well known family of quadratic Pólya fields. Furthermore, a field K is a Pólya field if the products of all maximal ideals of OK withe the same norm are principal. Anologously to the classical embedding problem, we can set the following problem : is every number field contained a Pólya field ? We give a positive answer to this question : for each number field K, the Hilbert class field HK of K is a Pólya field. We know also that every ideal of OK becomes principal in OHK. This leads us to introduce the notion of Pólya extension : it is a field L containing K such thah the Pólya group of K becomes trivial by extension of ideals, it is also a field L such that the OL-module generated by Int (OK) has a regular basis. Consequently, HK is a Pólya extension of K in the general case. Moreover, when K is abelian, capitulation of ambigeous ideals of K proves that the genus field of K is a Pólya extension. This leads us to consider minimality and unicity questions for Pólya fields and Pólya extensions

Full textWe present the foundations of logarithmic arithmetic and prove results about capitulation of logarithmic class, particularly a logarithmic version of Hilbert’s Theorem 94. We also give an algorithm to compute the kernel of the logarithmic capitulation. In the same view of principalization for logarithmic divisors, we obtain conditions for both finitude and infinitude of the locally cyclotomic tower constructed by Jean-François Jaulent and Florence Soriano-Gafiuk. The theorems shows the fundamental part of logarithmic ramification opposed to the phenomenon of principalization. We investigate a generalization of the locally cyclotomic tower and give a characterization for the finitude

Accordingly and to avoid misinterpretation of the term Capitulation it seems appropriate to try to define it. But in Europe, is usually meant by the term Capitulation an agreement establishing the terms of surrender, it is not this sense that is retained in this thesis. Means by Capitulation treaties that guarantee to the subjects of Christian nations residing outside Christianity, especially in Muslim countries, the right to be removed to a large extent to the action of local authorities and raise their national authorities represented by their diplomatic agents and consuls. The main effect of the regime chapter was to prevent the local authority to interfere in the relations between foreigners who enjoyed a kind of extraterritoriality

Full textBy writing a complete history of the First French Army from the Provence landing on August 15, 1944, to the German surrender on May 8, 1945, this dissertation aims to connect the military, diplomatic and political dimensions of this campaign with its colonial, social and cultural aspects. Born in North Africa from the fusion between the Free French and the so called ‘’Armée d’Afrique”, reinforced in metropolitan France with volunteers coming from the Resistance and with conscripts, it was an extremely heterogeneous army. Nevertheless it had to fulfill a challenging set of diplomatic, political and military objectives: to restore the national grandeur four years after the defeat and to get France a seat at the table with other victorious nations, to implement a national unity program and to deal with the aspirations for change coming from French society. In May 1945, these challenges had only been partially overcome. Even if its successes were tarnished by incidents of rape and looting, the French army was victorious on the battlefront and France obtained control of an occupation zone in Germany. Political and military tensions among soldiers decreased while they were fighting a common enemy. But peace brought these tensions back. The Post-War army was only marginally renewed. And as general mobilization was never decreed in metropolitan France, natives and Europeans born in the empire paid the harshest price to deliver the mother country as contestation of the colonial order increased. In 1945, the gap between the nation and its army, and between metropolitan France and its empire was wider than ever

Full textMadrid is the focus of our research. Two main reasons led us to make such a choice. May 2nd 1808, in Madrid, was the beginning of the uprising against Napoleon's troops. In the same way, on the one hand, Madrid was the first region to capitulate, facing Murat’s repression. And on the other hand, the city did not resist the offensive led by Napoleon on December 1808. Therefore our research has aims. First, to highlight the effectiveness of the marks of the events occurred on May 2nd and 3rd 1808 those of the War of Independence, then to portray their impact on Madrid’s people daily life as well as the demographics situation of the city during the war (1808-1814). The war also contributed to tarnish the image of the new King, Joseph Bonaparte, whose legitimacy and reforms policy most Spaniards opposed. This work is divided into three parts: pre-revolutionary period, revolution itself and postrevolutionary period in Madrid. The differents aspects dealt with are examined from a political, social and demographic approach

Full textThe XVIth century is often perceived as an era of religious driven massacres, a litany of carnage and exactions directly followed, from 1650 onward, by reversing habits of honourable capitulation, a closely regulated and restricted warfare characterized by a great improvement in the fate of the defeated. A humanization of the war would show through a codification of the surrending procedures and the transfer of forteresses. This essay investigates this derealizing vision of warfare, based on historical anthropology’s theoretical leads. It shows that honourable capitulation come about earlier on as an ideal led by the interest of belligerent parties. These interests appear as a major motive for both leniency and rigorousness. All along the XVIth and XVIIth cent., capitulation stands as a risk for the honor and life of the losers. This history of capitulation intends to deconstruct the derealizing myth of chivalrous and limited warfare, to recall the fact that wars under the reign of Louis XIV often led to repeated acts of unleashed violence

of Europe. This thesis, however, aims to show that such an analysis is not enough to understand the Ottoman impact on the European state system. Moreover, it argues that the Ottoman Empire contributed to the construction of this system both politically and economically. By depriving the Habsburg Empire of dominating whole continent, Ottoman Empire helped the proto-modern centralizing states, i.e. England, France and the Netherlands, and Protestantism to survive the suppression of the Habsburgs. On the other hand, by granting capitulations to these European states, it contributed to the economies of these states in a way that they could be able to develop their emerging capitalist economies. In all, this thesis concludes that the Ottoman Empire was not a passive actor and an outsider to the European system, acted only as a counter-reference point in the formation of the European identity
rather, it actively involved in the European politics and economics as an active actor.

“Herbert Marcuse‟s „Reason and Revolution‟ towards a institutional changing‟s dialectic” expounds the philosophical reasons of a revolutionnary‟s praxis. The argument is developed by the reciprocity of two dialectic‟s criteria: the historic understanding of the libertarian aims and of its institutional actuality. The freedom as an ontological category, first criterion, and the political process of human liberation, the second, accomplish the elements of the reciprocity‟s dynamics as expounded in “Reason and Revolution” at 1941. The 1960‟s preface, “A note on dialectic” develops the reciprocity between the freedom‟s consciousness and the process of its actuality, as a alternative discourse instead of surrendering to the establishment. The text also recognizes in the Marcuse‟s work of 1966, the analogy between the essential criteria of the dialectic perspective and the understanding that the affluent capitalism‟s negation demands two types of strategies, one stood by the concept of negation one as a internal power and the other as an external one. The internal negation reveals the unaccepetable contradictions of the capitalist system and the external permits understanding the protest for justice and for the human good, universal values, beyond the capitalist system.
Wadho, Waqar ahmed. "Essays on the economics of corruption." Thesis, Aix-Marseille 2, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011AIX24005/document.
Full textThis dissertation consists of three essays. The topics cover determination, variance and repercussions of corruption (essay one), corruption deterrence through wage incentives (essay two), and natural resource curse (essay three). In the first essay, I show that for a larger population of unskilled labor, there is a widespread corruption and for a smaller population there is no corruption. For the intermediate levels there are multiple equilibria. On its consequences, corruption increases wage inequality between skilled and unskilled workers, and results in output and welfare losses. In the second essay, I argue that deterring corruption through efficiency wage may become prohibitively expensive. With endogenous monitoring technology that allows capturing the dual role of auditing, as a complement with and as a substitute for wage incentives, I find that the government is better-off accepting corruption when it is costly to monitor. When it is optimal to deter bribery, the government can do it either through efficiency wages or monitoring. The role of efficiency wages decreases in societies with higher level of dishonesty. In the third essay, I build a theory explaining a resource curse. In contrast to the existing literature which generally considers low education, corruption and natural resources separately, I combine three strands of literature. Natural resources affect incentives to invest in education and rent seeking that in turn affects growth. Second, the relationship between resource-abundance and resource-curse is non-monotonic. For low inequality in access to education and high cost of political participation, high-growth and poverty-trap equilibria co-exist

Full textAfter the Ottoman Empire granted France access to selected markets starting in the 16th century, a large number of merchants of Provence established selling agents in the main trading ports of Levant. Since the Medieval period these ports had been called échelles of Levant, in the Middle East, and échelles of Barbary, in North Africa. These terms are also used to name the legal framework governing the international trade with these regions. Since then, the merchants of this marketplaces had to meet three kinds of regulations : local commercial law, regulations from the Turkish administration and regulations from the French Royal administration. French merchants developed new forms of enterprise based on the capitulations that ensured free movement of people and goods within the Ottoman territory. From the second half of the 17th century, the French royal administration tried to implement an interventionist policy in an attempt to control the trade and benefit from it

Full textIn the aftermath of a disastrous defeat by Prussia in 1870, France sought, in part through the expansion of her colonial domain, to retrieve her position as a great power.Financial imperialism created a semi-colonial aspect to the relationship between France and the Ottoman Empire. Similarly, the embrace of French culture by the Ottoman elite enhanced this tie. The expansion of the teaching of French throughout the empire was largely the work of the Catholic Church under the protection of the French consuls, themselves armed with the Capitulations and consequentially politically empowered. Thus, the French consular network in Turkey became the most entrenched of all the powersOne aspect of this work is the examination of the coherence between the consular staff resident in Turkey and the cultural standards of an oriental society in the midst of rapid change. Analysis of the reasons for the failures in this regard brings to light weakness of the foreign service at the time. The Republican regime increased the requirements for diplomats, consuls and dragomans while setting career path insulated from favouritism. These changes have been analyzed through a prosopographic study. Personal data of nearly five hundred officers and the details of their careers have been input in a database for the purpose of statistical analysis. Splitting the corpus in four groups according to four successive recruiting periods shows the evolutions that took place. Biographies of a number of these officers have been written illustrating statistical results or showing off meaningful exceptions. The consular network is a means but to what end? France’s strategic objectives, and those of the other powers, that underlined the development of their networks have been analyzed in a comparative perspective. Their rivalries in the Middle East hindered France’s formation of alliances, though that was a major goal of her foreign policy. The case study regarding Lebanon and the consulate general in Beirut addresses the question of patronage and the significance of influence in a region where Catholics are a minority and hold a weak economic and political power. Thus, is raised the question of the relationship between France and the Muslim world, exacerbated by the rise to power of the Young Turks

This thesis is focused on exposing the luxury, decadence and moral corruption of Baronet Sir Walter, William Elliot and Elizabeth of the titled landed gentry in the genteel class of the early nineteenth century England. Anne, the heroine, suffers tremendous pain and agony from her father’s vanity of status and appearance, his irresponsibility to the parish and the poor, and, most of all, his snobbery to the naval officers. Such poignant social-consciousness” or “pride” of the Elliots resulted in Anne’s canceling her engagement with Captain Wentworth eight years ago before the opening of Persuasion. At that time, Anne obeyed the prudential rules of the ladies in the upper society and fulfilled her filial duty to Lady Russell, her godmother, and severed the engagement. However, Sir Walter’s bankruptcy now leads to Anne’s accidental meeting with Captain Wentworth at Uppercross. In Persuasion, Jane Austen drastically rebukes and criticizes the extravagant lifestyle of the Elliots and satirizes the snobbish and vain attitude towards the Dalrymples, the nobility, and Mrs. Clay and William Elliot, the parasites, as much as possible. On the one hand, the Elliots’ self-consequence and snobbery are disgusting to Musgroves, the plain, prosperous and generous landed gentry. On the other hand, Sir Walter contemns the enthusiastic, vigorous, upright, assiduous naval officers for their lack of noble birth and eminent social status. Sir Walter is blind to the existing “unfeudal tone” of the more democratic, commercial-oriented, and open society. That the economic vitality and moral legitimacy transfer from the debt-ridden Sir Walter to Admiral Croft is signified through the Crofts’ renting of Kellynch Hall and the Elliots’ removal to Bath. Anne’s predicaments and restraints being a woman in a patriarchal landed gentry are meant by Jane Austen to be deeply sympathized and identified with by the readers. Anne proves herself to be an exemplary lady both in morality and intelligence. Anne grows from an obedient, intimidated, and diffident girl of nineteen to an independent, autonomous, dependable, self-assertive woman to the Musgroves, the naval officers and impoverished Mrs. Smith. Despite the injustice of law, especially Primogeniture, scarce education, lack of career training, and opportunity to get distinguished in her society, Anne learns by herself and owns both sweet virtues as a gentlewoman as well as masculine determination to persevere through curtailments. Anne is psychologically and physically alienated and isolated by Sir Walter and Elizabeth at Kellynch and deprived of her rightful dues. What is worse, Anne suffers from Captain Wentworth’s prejudices on “firmness” and “persuasability” and has to face the impending spinsterhood in poverty, without any identification in the genealogy and the society. Through the depiction of Captain Wentworth’s epiphany, Jane Austen points out the importance of mutual esteem and sexual equality in happy marriage. Captain Wentworth has accused Anne of being weak in canceling their engagement and seeks rebound in Louisa Musgrove. Only after the accident on the Cobb does he realize Anne’s strong sense of responsibility and selfless-devotion to friends. Both of Captain Wentworth’s enlightenment and Anne’s taking the initiative at Bath contribute to their reunion. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction of the following chapter II, III, IV, and a brief overview of the theory I will apply to this thesis. Chapter two treats the moral and financial decadence of the Elliots, which causes their unpopularity to the Musgroves and the impediments to Anne. Chapter three discusses Anne’s mental growth during her separation with Captain Wentworth. Anne wins the respects of the Musgroves and the naval officers for her devotion, capability and reliability. Finally, Anne turns her back on her father’s tyranny and flees Lady Russell’s control, and autonomously seeks her companions. Chapter four focuses on Captain Wentworth’s education and Anne’s leading their rapprochement at Bath. Chapter five is the conclusion to wrap this thesis up.

This thesis studies the transformation of three Western European social democratic parties - the Labour Party, Parti Socialiste and Partij van de Arbeid - during and after the oil crisis of the 1970s with the aid of comparative historical analysis. The literature on the subject indicates that if there was a social democratic political consensus in postwar Western Europe, the economic crisis of the 1970s discredited these ideas and enabled neoliberalism to take centre stage. Most social democratic parties internalised neoliberalism by embracing the Third Way. Social democracy today is undergoing a deep organic crisis as the Third Way has lost its mobilisation appeal - and this crisis is comparable to the one that ended the social democratic moment in the 1970s. The three subject parties’ tenure in government between 1974 and 1983 has been analyzed in case studies. Subsequently, the parties’ organizational composition has been assessed with the aid of Stefano Bartolini’s framework, their policies and proposals have been placed on the universalism -classism continuum proposed by the Laclau-Mouffe framework, and a link was made between party composition and a party’s adoption of classist or universalist positions, an under-researched aspect of modern social democracy. The findings show that parties that enjoyed strong link-backs to civil society adopted classist positions, were vote- rather than policy-seeking and discarded social democracy when it came under fire, moving from the patronage of one insider group to another with diminishing returns. However, the example of the Parti Socialiste shows that a social democratic party without civil society link-backs is more universalistic in its appeals, which has enabled it to resist neoliberalism and uphold classical social democracy of a policy-seeking bent, emphasising equality of result in its social policy and full employment in its economic policy. This is consistent with Laclau and Mouffe’s suppositions. More research will be needed to ascertain the extent to which a universalistic social democratic party can safeguard social democratic institutions in a country’s political and economic ecology.
