Full textValeo Company produces for the automotive industry several synchronous machines intended to operate either in starter mode or in alternator mode. One of the manufactured machines is the Starter-Alternator Reversible System (StARS) that is a wound rotor belt-driven machine. Actually, StARS is supplied by a full-wave voltage inverter and its self-commutation is controlled by an integrated shaft-mounted position sensor. The removal of the latter is a very promising passage. In addition to the suppression of the costs due to the sensor and its installation, the elimination of the sensor's wiring improves the reliability and the robustness of the system. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the StARS sensorless control. At zero speed, initial rotor position detection and motor parameter identification are presented. In medium and high speed range, the sensorless operation of the StARS is based on the estimation of the machine rotational electromotive forces. At low speed, the rotor position is detected by estimating the stator flux which is obtained by integration of the measured back electromotive force. The proposed sensorless control can perform a switchover from starting to sensorless open-loop operation. It has a simple structure and uses two current sensors. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the successful operation of the investigated sensorless method

Full textFor their high power density and ease of control, permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are widely used in more electric aircraft. In order to control PMSMs, precise information on the rotor position is required. This information is provided by position sensors which have inherent drawbacks despite their good precision: these sensors decrease reliability and increase weight, volume, and cost of the whole system. In this thesis, we present a mechanical sensorless control method by estimating the rotor speed and position only from the phase currents measurements. Sensorless control methods suitable for high speeds and based on back-EMF estimation are first discussed. Then, a state of the art in sensorless methods for low speeds operations is presented. A new sensorless control, independent from the motor parameters, is presented for operating at low speeds and standstill. Both simulations (on a PMSM model taking into account the saturation phenomenon) and experimental results show the effectiveness of this model-independent method. A convergence analysis and a robustness study of the proposed algorithm are also made. Finally, an initialization process and a method for smooth transition between low and high speeds methods are proposed and validated on an experimental test-bench

Full textThe aircraft manufacturers express the need to develop a more "electric" aircraft. This brings forward new requirements for the electric drive systems in terms of increasing the available on-board power and resource sharing in order to optimize the overall mass and cost. Among the ongoing studies on the evolution of motor drives, a particular interest is given to the development of multi-level brushless synchronous starter/generators (BSSG). These drives are likely to provide the high torque required to start-up the reactors to which they are associated. For this purpose, the knowledge, at any time, of the rotor position is essential. However, adding a dedicated sensor impacts on the design of the machine, increasing volume, cabling needs and cost. For this purpose, investigating on “sensorless” control laws will permit to avoid using such a sensor and to simplify the design of the Starter/Generators.Using a fine modelling of the machine, this work studies the conditions of feasibility for sensorless control and analyzes several techniques for this purpose. A new method of estimation of the shaft-position, particular to the BSSG architecture is proposed and then illustrated with experimental results. This technique is based on the processing of the existing harmonic components naturally in the stator of the machine and allows the estimation of the position at standstill and the very low speed. To extend the estimation to the whole speed range, a study of position estimation using a state observer using the complete model of the machine considering the knowledge of the existing (or injected) harmonic components in the stator currents is proposed. This observer can be applied to the brushless synchronous starter/generator but also on generic synchronous machines. In this study, its performance is illustrated on a permanent magnet synchronous machine

Full textThe thesis work, presented in this manuscript, was carried out for the development of the CMOS sensors which are foreseen to equip future vertex detector of the CBM experiment at FAIR (GSI, Darmstadt). First, we present new ionising particles detection circuits working in current mode: PhotoFETs. They were developed in order to improve the performances of the CMOS sensors, in particular the sensitivity and readout speed. Second, we present a new architecture of Double ramp Analogue-to-Digital Converter (ADC) with 4 bits resolution. Its integration into the CMOS sensors imposes specific constraints on the design of ADC: minimal material budget (layout size), severe limits on the power consumption and the conversion time. This contribution succeeded in good experimental results which open interesting perspectives for the integration of PhotoFETs and Double Ramp ADC in to CMOS sensors, in particular by using Very Deep Submicronic technologies and 3D technology

Full textThe development of closed loop controls for electrical drives requires the sensor installations in order to get feed back information. Nevertheless, any occurred sensor fault (current sensor,speed/position sensor,…) shows an operation system deterioration which leads in most cases to its shut down. This consequence is in contrast to industrial expectations especially concerning the system high accuracy that they are asking for. Statistic studies point out the sensor faults as frequent. So, it is necessary to find out solutions ensuring the system service continuity in case of any sensor fault. Firstly, the study presented in this work shows the used sensor technologies in order to understand both of the reason and the kind of occurred faults. Secondly, the studied system is presented which is an electrical drive based on a Doubly Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) operating in motor mode and connected to the grid by two inverters. The control developed is a Direct Torque Control (DTC). The control validation, in healthy operating mode, is realised throw simulation and experimentally. After, a study considering alternative current sensor and speed/position sensor faults are achieved. The developed algorithms are based on signal estimation, on a Fault Detection Isolation (FDI) and reconfiguration algorithms. In fact, they are simple to carry out, they don't need much hardware resources for implementation and their execution time is short. Finally, the experimental validation of the developed algorithms shows their efficiency. The system continues working even in presence of a sensor fault. Thus, the obtained control becomes a fault tolerant control thanks to these algorithms

Full textInductive power transfer has become a flourishing subject, considering the current geopolitical and environmental situation and the new technological possibilities. The electric road may lead to important and valuable consequences: extended range for electric vehicles and even hybrids, from a simple bonus to an infinite range, depending on the infrastructure set up, down-sized on-board batteries, reduction of the weight and cost of the vehicle and lowered importations of both battery cells and oil for the benefit of local investments .The solution developed uses a magnetic medium for the transfer. Therefore, it involves loosely coupled coils, implying inevitably strong leakage inductances and outstanding associated voltage drops. A new type of DC-DC converter was imagined to answer those issues. It is based on the concept of symmetry; a detailed analysis conducted with phasor diagrams leads to a specific working principle, which has been named the “voltage copying”. Thus, the DC/DC converter designed works with a realistic air-gap of 15 centimeters, a longitudinal tolerance to displacement up to +/-50% and a stable output voltage with low losses despite large coupling variations. And it all works without any communication between the ground part and the mobile part. These results make a dynamic charging seriously worth investigating. It requires to sequence the power supply of a multitude of small coils buried beneath the road surface, at the right time and for the right position. Putting inactive coils in a resonant short-circuit mode enables to use current measures to precisely detect the switching time from one coil to the next. This original solution, free of any position sensor, does not prevent the specific “voltage copying” property and the design principles developed in the first part

Full textThe biorobotics team from the Institute of Movement Sciences (Marseille, France) takes its inspiration from biological studies on flying insects which are able to navigate into unknown 3D environments with a high maneuverability. These studies led us to build minimalist optical sensors to make aerial robots autonomous for achieving complex tasks such as automatic landing and take-off, obstacle avoidance and very accurate hovering flight depicted in this doctoral thesis. This work presents several bio-inspired visual sensors implemented with different visual processing algorithms. All these sensors are able to locate visual objects (contrasting edges and bars) with unusual properties for optical sensing devices: a blur obtained by defocusing optics related with active retinal micro-movements to improve the sensor resolution. We showed that the resolution in locating contrasting objects can be improved up to 160 fold better than the static resolution defined by the pixel pitch, which means that these bio-inspired optical sensors are endowed with hyperacuity. The thesis presents a miniature artificial compound eye CurvACE (of 1.75g for 2.2cm3) with a panoramic field of view (180x60°). This thesis describes thoroughly the characterization and the implementation of the CurvACE sensor onboard an aerial robot named HyperRob. This artificial compound eye acts as a position sensing device able to measure its position relative to a complex textured scene by fusing the position measurements obtained by 40 pixels. The tethered flying robot HyperRob (a 150-g bi-rotor with a 23-cm wingspan) stabilizes its roll and its position thanks to its hyperacute artificial compound eye

Full textThe aim of the work presented here is the control of the hybrid step motor (HSM) without mechanical sensors. We made a bibliographical study on the various techniques of sensorless control that can be applied to the HSM. We chose the extended Kalman filter (EKF) method because it allows the filtering of the estimated states and can extend the estimation to the motor parameters. To solve the problem of computing time, we proposed a steady state FKE. We have suggested the computation of the Kalman gain off-line. The experimental results show certain advantages of this filter with regard to the incremental encoder To detect the initial rotor position, we used the method of voltage impulses. It is based on the inductance variation against the rotor position. To control the position of the HSM, we proposed an RST regulator. The simulation test sensitivity of the regulator against some parameters variations. The experimental results show certain advantages of the regulator with regard to the traditional PID regulator. We also proposed a state feedback position control. The experimental results, realized in the same conditions as that of the RST regulator, show that the state feedback control can be also a good solution to control the HSM. We realized an electronic card based on a double H-bridge and a bench of mechanical test. For the implementation of the various algorithms, we used the powerful DSpace card DS1103

Full textDespite the advancements in industrial automation, robotic solutions are not yet commonly used in the civil engineering sector. More specifically, grinding tasks such as asbestos removal, are still performed by human operators using conventional electrical and hydraulic tools. However, with the decrease in the relative cost of machinery with respect to human labor and with the strict health regulations on such risky jobs, robots are progressively becoming credible alternatives to automate these tasks and replace humans. In this thesis, novel surface grinding control approaches are elaborated. The first controller is based on hybrid position-force controller with compliant wrist and a smooth switching strategy. In this controller, the impact force is reduced by the proposed smooth switching between free space and contact modes. The second controller is based on a developed grinding model and an adaptive hybrid position-velocity-force controller. The controllers are validated experimentally on a 7-degrees-of-freedom robotic arm equipped with a camera and a force-torque sensor. The experimental results show good performances and the controllers are promising. Additionally, a new approach for controlling the stability of mobile manipulators in real time is presented. The controller is based on zero moment point, it is tested in simulations and it was able to actively maintain the tip-over stability of the mobile manipulator while moving. Moreover, the modeling and sensors uncertainties are taken into account in the mentioned controllers where observers are proposed. The details of the development and evaluation of the several proposed controllers are presented, their merits and limitations are discussed and future works are suggested

Full textThis thesis focuses on the development of soft sensors for position control of the permanent magnet synchronous machine. Vector control of PMSM requires accurate knowledge of the rotor position. Traditionally, this position can be obtained from a mechanical sensor. Many years ago, the attention of the scientific community has focused on reducing the number of sensorsbecause their presence not only increases the cost and the total hardware complexity, but also reduces its reliability with an additional sensitivity to external disturbances. As a first step, we present several known types of soft sensors for PMSM. We present the complete design of a soft sensor for speed measurement of permanent magnet synchronous motor. The rotor speedand position can be estimated in a wide speed range even at low speed and standstill. We introduce two soft sensors operating in two different ranges of speed. Secondly, a simple method based on high frequency signal injection and exploiting the implementation of state variable filters to obtain a linear model with respect to the parameters is presented. Thus, a simplifiedprocedure of identification based on a least squares algorithm can be used. In an automotive application, the PMSM parameters can change due to temperature variation and aging of the material. Therefore, the coupling of the hybrid soft sensor and the simplified pocedure of identification provides a good estimate of the PMSM position over a wide speed range including standstill. We also consider a new approach to the robust control of the PMSM, but just as a newtrack for further investigations
