The textbook discusses the threats and risks to life and health of people in post-industrial society. The questions of organization and carrying out of measures of medical support of the population in zones of emergency situations and the centers of defeat are covered. Neurological, psychoanalytic, psychological, nursing, contextual, fear-avoidance, information-processing, feminist, evolutionary, genetic, and positivist viewpoints have all influenced the conceptualization of body image. Body image in the context of oncology is a multidimensional experience influenced by a variety of factors. By understanding the origin and history of body image conceptualization, researchers and clinicians in cancer care can build upon the existing knowledge base to develop appropriate and timely assessments of body image, train oncology healthcare providers to include body image in holistic survivorship care, and design interventions that appropriately address the body image needs of this population.

This chapter examines how we see desire on stage, especially in the absence of a body, through an analysis of William Shakespeare’sA Midsummer Night’s Dream. Focusing on the absence of the Indian boy inA Midsummer Night’s Dream, it considers whether desire can be present without a physicality to guarantee its presence on stage. It asks why Shakespeare does not produce the Indian boy as a fully materialized physical body and looks at two different modes of theatricality operating around the changeling boy’s physically absent body: the first might be hypothetically attributed to ‘Shakespeare’ and the second to ‘later productions’. It shows that the absent cause of desire and the inability to correlate desire to a fixed body seems to be a hallmark specifically of Shakespearean theatricality.

The notion that the body can be changed at will in order to meet the desires and designs of its ‘owner’ is one that has captured the popular imagination and underpins contemporary medical practices such as cosmetic surgery and gender reassignment. In fact, describing the body as ‘malleable’ or ‘plastic’ has entered common parlance and dictates common-sense ideas of how we understand the human body in late-capitalist consumer societies in the wake of commercial biotechnologies that work to modify the body aesthetically and otherwise. If we are not satisfied with some aspect of our physicality – in terms of health, function or aesthetics – we can engage with a whole variety of self-care body practices – fashion, diet, exercise, cosmetics, medicine, surgery, laser – in order to ‘correct’, reshape or restyle the body. In addition, as technology has advanced and elective cosmetic surgery has unapologetically entered the mainstream, the notion of the malleable body has become intrinsically linked to the practices and discourses of biomedicine and, furthermore, has become a significant means to assert and affirm identity.

Building on new insights from organizational economics, management accounting researchers have highlighted how incentive contracts and performance measure choices complement structural arrangements in firms. We discuss how “slow-moving” elements in organizational design, such as the allocation of decision rights to local managers and interdependencies between different parts of the production function, affect the working of incentives and performance measures. We pay attention to the empirical challenges that researchers face in this area and argues that mixed-method approaches in which economic models are combined with empirical evidence can help to build a body of evidence that is robust and admits cross-study accumulation of knowledge. Finally, we illustrate how recent economic models that incorporate other-regarding preferences can help to bridge the gap between economics-based research in management accounting and more traditional approaches that rely on the behavioral sciences.

Positive body image entails appreciating, loving, respecting, nurturing, protecting, and seeing beauty in the body regardless of its consistency with media appearance ideals. Embodiment reflects a connection between the mind and the body, which have a continual dialectical relationship with the world, and includes positive body connection, body agency and functionality, attuned self-care, positive experiences with body desires, and living in the body as a subjective rather than objectified site. This 38-chapter handbook reviews current knowledge of positive body image and embodiment, as well as future directions for work in these areas, which will be useful for mental health researchers, practitioners, advocates, and activists. Nine chapters review constructs that represent the positive ways we live in our bodies: experiences of embodiment, body appreciation, body functionality, body image flexibility, broad conceptualization of beauty, mindful attunement, intuitive eating, attunement with exercise, and attuned sexuality. Fifteen chapters speak to how we can cultivate positive body image and embodiment by expanding physical freedom (mindful movement, personal safety, connection to agency and desire); mental freedom (resisting objectification, stigma, media images, and gender-related molds); and social power (within families, peers, support systems, and online contexts). Last, 14 chapters address novel ways we can enhance positive body image and embodiment through individual and social interventions that focus on compassion, acceptance, emotional regulation, mindfulness, social justice, movement (yoga), cognitive dissonance, media literacy, and public health and policy initiatives.

Abstract The physical world is increasingly filled with digital products to the extent that the boundaries of digital and physical reality become blurred. From mundane devices such as mobile phones and washing machines, to esoteric research including tangible computation and body implants, we continually bridge two worlds, literally touching buttons and dials and metaphorically touching the bits beyond. The connection between pure thought and abstract information is through solid keyboard and mouse, but likewise the material world of buildings, cars, and running shoes is suffused with computation through sensors, displays, and flashing LEDs. How do people understand this world and how can designers create usable hybrid physical–digital products? This book brings together experience from human–computer interaction and industrial design, exploring these themes under four main headings: human body and mind; objects and things; space; and computation and information. In considering each it looks at the underlying physical processes, our human understanding of them, and then the way these inform and are informed by digital design. The final part of the book draws together the theoretical and practical implications of this for design. This includes practical advice, potential tools, and philosophical underpinnings. Digital technology is fundamentally altering the world we live in but can only be truly understood in relation to the physical world we all inhabit. This chapter argues that gender dysphoria—a person suffering from an incongruence between experienced gender and assigned gender—is another illustration of the vulnerable duplicity inherent in the human condition. I am not merely the matter of which I am made. Rather, I am that matter plus the form that I impose upon it. In trying to shape my matter, I experience myself as an autonomous person and, simultaneously, as a person whose autonomy is limited by the matter itself. Between sex and gender there is the same relationship as between matter and form. We can shape the matter we are ‘thrown into’ and give it the form we desire, obviously within the boundaries delimited by matter itself and by our capacity for autonomy. Being the person that I am is a task and a responsibility that consists in becoming who I am through what I am.

Animals must support their weight when moving over land, while also accommodating changes in terrain and substrate conditions. Most terrestrial animals accomplish this by using limbs to exert forces on the ground. Some groups have lost their limbs (snakes) or never evolved them in the first place (worms), relying instead on contractions of body muscles to transmit force between their body axis and the ground. Undulatory modes of terrestrial locomotion are frequently associated with a burrowing existence. In other animals, some combination of body undulation and limb propulsion moves the body forward. In this chapter we focus on the mechanisms and strategies for legged locomotion on land. Recent studies have examined how animals maneuver and accelerate, and how they stabilize body movements when running. A large body of work on terrestrial locomotion has also yielded inspiration for a new generation of legged robots that can move nimbly over irregular terrain than previous robot designs.

Some textbooks on questionnaire design claim it is an art. That would make the criterion for a “good” question entirely subjective—a worrying conclusion given that surveys are often used to discover important facts about people. Are our discoveries about people also entirely subjective? This chapter shows that it is possible to study what a “good” or a “bad” question is by experimentation. There is already a body of scientific evidence on questionnaire design that can be taken into account when designing a questionnaire. The chapter reviews some of this evidence and shows how it can be used to the advantage of the survey researcher. Questionnaire science is far from complete. On the one hand, this means that some of our conclusions may still be more art than science. On the other, it means that we can agree on one aspect of questionnaire science: more of it is needed.

Environmental agents can cause genetic and epigenetic changes to DNA, the consequences of which lead to deregulation of cellular processes and pathways that cause disease. Genetic variation can either be inherited if acquired through the germline or non-heritable when the DNA changes occur in somatic (body) cells. ‘Molecular biology in the clinic’ discusses two key contemporary areas of clinical research that have benefited from an improved knowledge of their molecular basis: ageing and cancer. Clinicians commonly encounter multiple challenges when assessing and treating individuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Some of the major challenges include poor insight and low motivation for appropriate treatment, delay in seeking treatment, desire for usually ineffective cosmetic treatment (e.g., surgery or dermatologic treatment) instead of mental health treatment, co-occurring substance use disorders, and frequent and sometimes severe suicidality. This chapter discusses recommended approaches to these challenges that clinicians can implement when assessing and treating patients with BDD. Strategies for engaging patients in cognitive-behavioral treatment and pharmacotherapy, and for disengaging patients from cosmetic treatment, are reviewed. Suggestions for treating patients with comorbid substance use disorders and suicidal patients are offered.

The Epicurean moral tenets concern living, loving, and dying. Their recommendations reflect the conviction that although pain and pleasure can be felt as either ‘psychological’ or ‘physical’, the mind is inseparable from the body, and ‘all good and bad consists in sense-experience’. The material nature of the body and mind makes suffering and death inevitable and the latter final and incontrovertible. Self-denial has no ethical importance for the Epicurean except as a means of preventing pain. ‘Epicurean ethics’ assesses Epicurean moral philosophy by considering desire and disappointment, the finality of death (mortalism), and the ethics associated with human welfare.

This chapter considers the neurodegenerative disorders Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Lewy body dementias (dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson’s disease dementia(PDD)), frontotemporal dementia (FTD); and also vascular dementia (VaD) which results from cerebrovascular disease. These different conditions, which give rise to dementia syndromes, each have distinct neurochemical pathologies, with important implications for treatment. As increased age is the common risk factor generally associated with dementing illnesses, neurochemical changes are set in the context of the changes which occur during ageing. A detailed understanding of the neurotransmitter function in each condition can lead to rational drug design and treatment strategies appropriate for each group of patients. Neurochemical pathology in transmitter systems underlying clinical features of these disorders are reviewed.

All infants rely on parenting behaviors that provide what they need to be healthy. As “compassion” can be defined as feelings that are elicited by perceiving someone else’s suffering with a desire to help (Goetz, Keltner, & Simon-Thomas, 2010), parenting behavior in concert with compassion towards a child can be defined as “compassionate parenting.” A child who has received compassionate parenting will tend to provide compassionate parenting to his or her own offspring, and possibly to unrelated others. We postulate that compassionate parenting should have the following characteristics: (1) effective care-giving behaviors (behavioral contingency), (2) parental emotions that are coherent and connected with child’s emotions (emotional connection), and (3) awareness of own and other’s cognitions and emotions and other environmental factors (reflective awareness). In this chapter, a body of literature in neurobiological mechanisms underlying parenting is selectively reviewed in reference to the behavioral, emotional, and cognitive aspects of compassionate parenting.

This chapter surveys the ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that occur in classical and quantum mechanics, and describes both numerical algorithms and appropriate software design for solving them. Systems of ordinary differential equations, together with a few constants of integration, can in most cases be regarded as a means of defining a function (the “solution”). In this chapter, we develop an object-oriented architecture that applies integrators of the Runge-Kutta family to create these functions. Together with an automatic derivative system for generating partial derivatives from functions of one or more variables, the differential equation solver becomes a powerful tool for solving a variety of few-body problems in classical Hamiltonian systems. This chapter presents a blend of numerical algorithms, physics, and computing techniques. The phenomenon of energy drift is discussed and used to motivate symplectic solvers. Techniques such as adaptive step size and possible problems with stability and multiple scales are also discussed.

Abstract:

‘Art and power’ considers how works of art and architecture were used to negotiate power relationships between human beings in the complex, hierarchical society of ancient Egypt, and between human beings and the world of the gods. The king’s body—its care and adornment, its representation in art, and its safety—was an important concern, which Egyptian art explored in many ways. The architecture of Egyptian temples was designed to keep people out in order to maintain a pure and desirable home for the gods. But they were also central to Egyptian society as the priests helped oversee the administrative, economic, and cultural life of the country.

Abstract:

Chapter abstract This chapter argues that Pierre Bourdieu’s research program is less compatible with ethnography than it first appears. Bourdieu was critical of structuralism, that perspective on the social world that prioritizes general patterns over lived experience, whereas ethnography claims as its raison d’être the elucidation of lived experience. A close reading of Bourdieu’s entire body of writings, however, reveals multiple reservations about the ethnographic method. At various points Bourdieu argues that ethnography is partial knowledge, impotent knowledge, and dangerous knowledge. This chapter elaborates each of these critiques, and gives ethnography a chance to respond. Ultimately, it concludes that it is possible to do ethnography from within the Bourdieusian research program. But ethnographers must take care to contextualize their field data in its extra-local context; they should deploy systematic research designs; and they must exercise reflexivity as to how one’s position as a scholar shapes one’s experience of others’ social worlds.

Perioperative neurologic injury related to spine surgery, albeit rare, can result in devastating functional loss. As the number of spine operations has increased, so has the need for strategies designed to avoid and protect against such injury. This chapter reviews the common etiologies of neurologic deficits secondary to spine surgery and the factors that place patients at increased risk for developing these complications. The use of intraoperative neuromonitoring, including somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs), electromyography (EMG), and transcranial motor evoked potentials (TcMEPs), to detect surgical trespass of neuronal elements is also reviewed. The authors also summarize the role of physiologic parameter optimization, including mean arterial blood pressure and body temperature, and pharmacologic interventions, should an injury occur. Current practice guidelines for preventing and managing perioperative neurologic injury are described.

Abstract:

This chapter examines three scenes of “movement”—from the 2004 Tamil film Chandramukhi, the controversial documentary India’s Daughter that aired on BBC in March 2015, and the Star Plus Television serial of the Mahabharata focusing on the “Draupadi Vastra Haran” in 2014—to question how women’s bodies continue to be domesticated to delegitimize the upwardly mobile woman’s desire for remaking herself. The chapter suggests that neoliberalism has specific choreographies of violence perpetrated against women’s bodies. In particular, the author argues that within the choreographies of neoliberalism, neither public nor private space is safe for women in India. The chapter suggests that where women’s erotic dancing has been domesticated by institutionalized patriarchy in the service of capitalist systems, haunting and possession emerge as movement possibilities of the corporeal/incorporeal body that can negotiate the public/private space of a permeating neoliberal order.

Shoe Reels examines the special relationship between shoes and cinema. The book considers the narrative and aesthetic functions of shoes, asking why they are so memorable, and what their wider cultural resonance might be. Written by experts from a range of disciplines, including film and television studies, philosophy, history, and fashion, this collection covers cinema from its origins to the present day, and spans a global range of films from the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia. Besides protecting the feet, shoes contribute to the performance of gender; they indicate aspects of personality, sexuality, race, ethnicity and social class; and they serve as tools of seduction. As objects designed for the body, shoes also affirm the materiality of individual bodies and the endurance of the human body itself when physical presence has been progressively de-emphasised, first with the advent of technical reproducibility (printing, photography, cinema, radio and the like), and now with the rise of digital technology in the virtual era. The very materiality of shoes—the fact that they are things—is what makes them ripe for analysis. Shoes humanise, setting people apart from non-human animals, but they can also serve to dehumanise. Objects par excellence of hyper-consumption, shoes are situated at the crossroads of sexual fetishism and commodity fetishism. Shoes are clearly more than just good to wear, then: to paraphrase Claude Lévi-Strauss, they are also good to think.
