Abstract:
Methods for organization of air purification on Yekaterinburg city’s street road network are considered.Air pollution by motor transport and a polluting substances stream to the car salon are estimated with a use of the received consistent patterns, dispersive models, transport streams’ characteristics, and data on current weather conditions. On a streams’ balance basis a permissible density of cars (on the non-exceedance of CO maximum permissible threshold) on the city’s territory (no more than 12-12.5 cars/sq. km) taking into account their emissions and work of photocatalytic cleaners in vehicles’ salons and photocatalytic coverings on the street road network surfaces (acoustic screens, sidewalks, buildings), and also due to processing of the polluting substances by different types of wood vegetation (protective forest strips, parks and forest parks) has been established. It has been defined that the removal of CO by means of available city vegetation is equivalent to additional presence on the city’s streets of 0.2-0.4 % of cars of the operated transport’s total number without air deterioration. A necessary area of an active surface for photocatalytic cleaners in the car salon (0.1 sq. m), bus salon (0.5 sq. m), and also a width of protecting surfaces with the deposited photocatalytic coverings near the pedestrian zone (5m) are estimated in this work. It has been established that sharing of the considered cleaning methods is capable to lead to annual decrease of carbon oxide from 0.14 to 6 %, and nitrogen oxides from 0.15 to 5.78 % in average concentration around the city.

Abstract:
Motor vehicle traumas are among the most common causes of injury both in Ukraine and around the world. Comprehensive examinations enable investigating and judicial authorities to investigate and detect crimes in cases of motor accident. The purpose of the study was to identify the most common challenging issues arising during the complex expert examinations traumas caused by motor vehicle accidents (MVA) and the ways to solve them by analyzing data obtained from forensic examinations of non-survivors in motor vehicle accidents in Ukraine. Results and discussion. According to 45 complex examination reports from the State Institution «Main Bureau of Forensic Medical Examination of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine» it was impossible to identify the position of the victims at the moment of trauma (and to identify the places the victims set in the car salon) due to the lack of primary data in 20% of the cases studied; and in only 5 cases it was possibility to establish the position of the victims at the moment of injury. Determining the location of the victim in the car, pedestrian, etc. can be only identified by characteristic and specific injuries, which are not always paid attention during the initial examination of cadavers. A lot of medical records can omit the description of some injuries (size, localization, shape, morphological features, etc.) or do not provide complete information that impedes the investigative of motor vehicle accidents. Another cause to identify the position of MVA non-survivor is inability to indicate the mechanism and sequence of damage to the car during the auto-technical expert examination. Conclusion. The study has shown that the main factors impeding the MVA investigation and clarifying the picture of event are: violation of the «Rules for conducting forensic expert examination of corpses in the forensic examination bureau» during the initial examination; the absence or poor quality description in the protocols and guidelines for the inspection of the accident scene, including physical evidence and the condition of the vehicle; the inability to establish the nature of injuries on the body of victims or non-survivors and damage to vehicles due to delays in the investigation of crimes; drawbacks in filling in and keeping medical documentation: absence or incomplete description of damage (size, shape, location, morphological features, etc.).

Abstract:
When a car is parked under the sunlight for a long period of time, solar radiation enters the vehicle through the car glass and becomes trapped inside the car. This causes the cabin interior air temperature to increase and this is especially noticeable in tropical countries with hot and humid climates that are situated near the equator like Brunei Darussalam. Aside from causing thermal discomfort to the passengers inside the car, degradation of the surfaces of the car interior may also be accelerated. This paper aims to demonstrate the severity of the heat by recording a number of temperature measurements in a certain period of time for two different types of cars, under three different conditions for each car and comparing them to the ambient temperature. It is observed that the interior temperature depends on the design of the car. We experimented temperature measurements for two types of car models, i.e., saloon and SUV models. Saloon car is design such as way that its interior volumes space is smaller than the SUV designed car. The smaller interior volume spaced Saloon car exhibits higher maximum temperature of 68.7°C whereas the larger interior volume spaced SUV car exhibits maximum temperature of 59.4°C under fully exposed to sun with same environmental conditions.

Abstract:
Stanniocalcin (STC) is a homodimeric glycoprotein hormone that was first discovered in fish, where it is produced by unique endocrine glands known as the corpuscles of Stannius (CS). In freshwater salmon, STC plays an integral role in Ca2+ and phosphate homeostasis. High levels of extracellular Ca2+promote the synthesis and release of STC, which on entering the bloodstream reduces the levels of gill and gut Ca2+ transport and renal phosphate excretion to restore normocalcemia. In this report, we have examined STC in seawater salmon. We have studied the distribution of STC protein and mRNA in marine Atlantic salmon CS cells, the responsiveness of these cells to Ca2+, and some physical properties of the hormone. Our results demonstrated that all Atlantic salmon CS cells expressed the STC gene. Furthermore, these cells exhibited a Ca2+ sensitivity that was remarkably similar to those in freshwater salmon in terms of its ability to stimulate STC secretion and gene expression. When Atlantic salmon glands were fractionated by concanavalin A (ConA)-Sepharose chromatography, two distinct forms of the hormone were identified, both of which were recognized by sockeye salmon STC antiserum, and designated as STC1 and STC2. STC1 was a glycosylated, 42-kDa disulfide-linked dimer, with a high affinity for ConA. STC2 did not bind to ConA, was 44 kDa in size, and had a different subunit structure. STC2 was also a less effective inhibitor of gill Ca2+ transport in fish. Collectively, the results suggest that there is a second form of STC in salmon.

Dyson, Gerald P. "Contexts for pastoral care : Anglo-Saxon priests and priestly books, c. 900-1100." Thesis, University of York, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/13367/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an examination and analysis of the books needed by and available to Anglo-Saxon priests for the provision of pastoral care in the tenth and eleventh centuries. Anglo-Saxon priests are a group that has not previously been studied as such due to the scattered and difficult nature of the evidence. By synthesizing previous scholarly work on the secular clergy, pastoral care, and priests’ books, this thesis aims to demonstrate how priestly manuscripts can be used to inform our understanding of the practice of pastoral care in Anglo-Saxon England. In the first section of this thesis (Chapters 2–4), I will discuss the context of priestly ministry in England in the tenth and eleventh centuries before arguing that the availability of a certain set of pastoral texts prescribed for priests by early medieval bishops was vital to the provision of pastoral care. Additionally, I assert that Anglo-Saxon priests in general had access to the necessary books through means such as episcopal provision and aristocratic patronage and were sufficiently literate to use these texts. The second section (Chapters 5–7) is divided according to different types of priestly texts and through both documentary evidence and case studies of specific manuscripts, I contend that the analysis of individual priests’ books clarifies our view of pastoral provision and that these books are under-utilized resources in scholars’ attempts to better understand contemporary pastoral care. Furthermore, this thesis will expand the corpus of manuscripts thought to have been used by Anglo-Saxon priests. In particular, I will argue that London, British Library, Cotton Vespasian D. XV and Warsaw, Biblioteka Narodowa, I. 3311 (the Warsaw Lectionary) are best understood as Anglo-Saxon priestly manuscripts.

Riedel, Christopher Tolin. "Monastic Reform and Lay Religion in Æthelwold's Winchester." Thesis, Boston College, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:104635.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Robin Fleming
Bishop Æthelwold of Winchester (d. 984) was a reformer of Anglo-Saxon monasticism, but he was also deeply concerned with the religion of ordinary English laypeople. Whether in his promulgation of the cult of saints, vast elaboration of the liturgy, or extensive rebuilding of Winchester’s churches, Æthelwold demonstrated an interest in the lay religion that has been consistently ignored by modern scholars who fixate on his monastic zeal. This concern for the laity is natural in the context of Æthelwold’s own interpretation of the English past, as his goal of an all-monastic English Church necessitated a pastoral role for his reformed monks rather than their strict seclusion from the world. Such a goal was possible because Æthelwold initiated his reform program in the mid tenth century, when corporate religious life still provided the bulk of pastoral care in Winchester and the rest of southwest England, and the organized parish system was only a dim possibility as small local churches began to appear haphazardly in the north and east of the country. Æthelwold’s reforms were therefore very different from similar ones taking place on the continent or even in the sees of his fellow English reformers, and he attempted to recreate an imagined English past very unlike the Church that would eventually result a century later. The influence of his students, however, especially Wulfstan Cantor and the prolific Ælfric of Eynsham, shows that Æthelwold’s unusual interest in lay religion had far reaching consequences for the medieval English Church

Mosweunyane, Lentswe Donald. "Records management practices of hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality." Thesis, Bloemfontein : Central University of Technology, Free State, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11462/193.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M. Tech. (Business administration)) - Central University of technology, Free State, 2013
This study was necessitated by the fact that being labour intensive, hair salons provide partial solution to South Africa’s high unemployment, poverty and inequality problems hence need to be supported so that they can grow and continue performing their expected labour absorption role. Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality in the North West Province of South Africa is a socio economically depressed area that depends on hair salons for employment. The prosperity of hair salons is therefore critical to the well-being of the inhabitants of the area. Unfortunately, proliferation of hair salon business in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality since the dawn of democracy in South Africa has created fierce competition for customers leading to lack of profitability and hair salons failures. While many reasons can account for business failure in the face of intense competitive environment, there is consensus from the literature that in the current information economy, appropriate management of records allows for quick access to reliable information and this is key to business success. In fact, resource-based view (RBV) of the firm suggests that a company’s quick access to reliable information that is contained in its resources allows that firm to gain sustainable competitive advantage that allows for superior performance. This calls for proper management of a company’s records. Accordingly, it is crucial that managers/owners of hair salons recognise the importance of good records management in their businesses in order to continuously have timely access to accurate information. Unfortunately, the researcher has informally observed a disturbing trend among some hair salons in Dr Ruth Mompati local municipality that flies in the face of what can be termed good records management. An informal visit to some of the salons in the region revealed an apparent laxity with which transactions were recorded. Worst still, Informal conversations with a few hair salons operators seem to suggests that records management may be a problem among hair salons as some even see it as more a liability than asset. This suggests that hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality might not be taking records management seriously. The question then is, how wide spread is this negative attitude towards records keeping in Dr Ruth Mompati local municipality? Or could this be the general sentiment in the hair salon industry as a whole? The purpose of this study was to assess the status of records management among hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality. The key finding of this study is that most hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality do practice records management to a certain extent. However, there are certain records that hair salons in the area regard as of no importance and therefore are neglected. The study also revealed that those hair salons that engage in good records management outperform those that do not. The study further revealed that most of the salons keep paper records although they would prefer electronic format. Lack of access to computers was cited as the greatest problem in keeping electronic records. Details of the study including findings, conclusions and recommendations are presented and discussed in the main report.

Abstract:
AbstractDue to demographic changes all European countries face significant challenges concerning the provision of home and community care for older people. While challenges in organising care services seem to be generally similar, the resources, values and responsibilities are different across countries. The purpose of this chapter is to investigate current knowledge and patterns concerning exclusion from home care services in Central and Eastern European countries, focusing especially on Hungary as a central EU member state and the Russian Federation, as a non-EU Eastern European country. As existing international research typically focuses on Anglo-Saxon contexts, this chapter draws on the national language literature of these two nations as sources of empirical data for the analysis. Our analysis indicates that there is a long-standing risk of exclusion from home care services in both countries, with a need for reform to existing provisions to address this exclusion. Despite this a differential impact of macro-level policy is evident within the two jurisdictions, with some new innovations within the Russian Federation.

Abstract:
Chapter 8 describes Headen’s move in 1925 to Albany, Georgia, where he established the Headen Motor Car Company and began the engine work that led to his first patent. The chapter explores the coalition he built in Albany, which comprised black beauty salon owner and clubwoman Emma V. Wynn and her husband fraternal leader and café owner William Wynn; members of the white Chamber of Commerce; black nationalist attorney Henry V. Plummer; and auto enthusiast Edward E. Harris. The chapter also documents Headen’s rise as an inventor, his relationship with white railroad engineer Henry A. Petit (co-inventor on his first patent), and his move away from the coalition model in favor of individual investors, including patent speculator George P. Koelliker and financier George D. Hamilton. The chapter places Headen’s activities in the context of growing African American automobility, the history of bi-fuel engines, and the existing avenues of funding for independent inventors.

Abstract:
African beauty salons are important institutions in African and African American communities and can be found in nearly every city and community where African immigrants live. This study utilizes case study to explore the pathways to African women's entrepreneurship and business sustainability in hair braiding within the care industry. While social exchange theory and standpoint theory help to illuminate the “non-choice” of salon entrepreneurship for educated African immigrant women, Lave and Wenger's (1991) notion of communities of practice further discloses how the salon space becomes dedicated to more than service delivery. In general, the study shows the efforts of one entrepreneur to fit the unique exigencies of hair braiding to local (western) business requirements. The study identifies how more accommodation of those exigencies would less inhibit this form of African women's entrepreneurship in general and thus benefit local communities at large through more sustainable service delivery, increased revenue flow, and infrastructural support for immigrants in general.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the phrase, sans culottes, and its key role within the larger context of the French Revolution. The phrase has a bearing on the sequence of events that led from the fall of the Bastille to the beginning of the Terror. This is because the name sans-culottes was actually a neologism with a rather curious history. Although it can be taken initially to refer to someone simply wearing ordinary trousers, rather than the breeches usually worn in eighteenth-century public or professional life, the words themselves also had a more figurative sense. In this latter usage, the condition of not having breeches, or being sans culottes, had to do with the arrangements and values of eighteenth-century French salons. In this setting, the condition of not having breeches, or being sans culottes, was associated with a late seventeenth- or early eighteenth-century salon society joke.

Abstract:
The push towards creative and active learning in higher education has gained momentum in recent years, creating opportunities for innovative, student focused approaches. The Covid-19 pandemic shifted the educational landscape to the online world, propelling the need to create compelling learning activities for students. While also fostering a sense of community and facilitating both peer relationships and peer learning. This paper presents the development and initial implementation of an innovative teaching tool, The Virtual Shoe Salon, which is based on creative pedagogies and experiential learning. The Virtual Shoe Salon has been implemented to embed stronger skills in research and data analysis within the curriculum of our fashion business courses. As a teaching method it can embrace both online and face to face environments. Drawing from a theoretical foundation of material culture, combined with an adaptation of the photovoice research approach, this salon takes the ordinary, but expressive objects of shoes to engage students in research and analysis through collaboration, conversation and peer to peer learning. The paper presents the rationale for the Virtual Shoe Salon, and findings from its implementation with 250 students. Subsequent evaluation and reflection with both students and staff have evidenced the positive role of the Virtual Shoe Salon in facilitating active and collaborative learning around research and data analysis. While it has actively encouraged a dynamic and collaborative learning environment, the Virtual Shoe Salon has initiated a shared space underpinned by the sense of community and belonging for students that Covid-19 had eroded .

In ASME 2018 37th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2018-78261.

Abstract:
Finfish aquaculture has been expanding in areas like Norway and Canada over the last 20 years, and is projected to expand further in the next decades as the planet’s population and demand for seafood increases. Finding appropriate salmon farm sites is becoming increasingly difficult, as there are fewer protected nearshore locations available for development. As a result, there is interest in increased utilization of existing leases (i.e. permitted sites). These leases have a boundary in which the anchors and mooring lines must be contained. Reducing the footprint of the mooring arrangement will allow for an increased utilization of existing leases. A possible method to reduce the footprint of a spread moored salmon farm is to use a taut mooring rather than a chain catenary mooring. This requires the use of mooring materials and components that allows for handling of tidal elevation changes and wave action. This paper investigates the performance of a taut moored configuration with integrated Seaflex elastomeric mooring components in comparison with a conventional chain catenary configuration using dynamic analysis. The results show that a reduced footprint taut mooring configuration with integrated elastomeric mooring components can be substituted for a typical chain catenary mooring with no significant increase in peak mooring line loads at extreme sea states and significant reduction in peak loading at moderate and calm seastates.

Abstract:
The average flow field inside and around the bottom of porous cylinders in a uniform flow is explored using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Tests were conducted on six cylinders with porosities of 0%, 30%, 60%, 75%, 82% and 90% in a flume tank where the flow field inside and around the models is time averaged over 180 seconds. The models had a height-to-diameter ratio of 3 and were made from metal mesh. The Reynolds numbers ranged from 5,000 to 20,000 based on the diameter of the models and from 75 to 300 based on the diameter of individual strands of the mesh, which corresponds to the Reynolds numbers occurring at salmon fish cage netting used along the Norwegian coast. The porosities of 82%, 75% and 60% correspond to those of a fish cage netting in Norwegian Salmon farming with no, light and heavy biofouling, respectively. The results from this study are discussed with respect to the instantaneous flow field in and around the same cylinders at identical Reynolds numbers. The focus is on the effect of porosity on the ventilation inside the cages and the vertical transports within the near wake. It is shown that heavy fouling of aquacultural nettings can lead to internal circulation inside fish cages and therefore has the potential to reduce the ventilation of the net pens dramatically. The description of the time-averaged flow field inside and around porous cylinders can be used as benchmarks to validate and adjust numerical models of the flow past porous cylinders. The results from this study can be valuable also for the fish farming industry, as bio-fouling and the reduced porosity of fish cages can be monitored and controlled directly by fish farmers.
