Dyson, Gerald P. "Contexts for pastoral care : Anglo-Saxon priests and priestly books, c. 900-1100." Thesis, University of York, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/13367/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an examination and analysis of the books needed by and available to Anglo-Saxon priests for the provision of pastoral care in the tenth and eleventh centuries. Anglo-Saxon priests are a group that has not previously been studied as such due to the scattered and difficult nature of the evidence. By synthesizing previous scholarly work on the secular clergy, pastoral care, and priests’ books, this thesis aims to demonstrate how priestly manuscripts can be used to inform our understanding of the practice of pastoral care in Anglo-Saxon England. In the first section of this thesis (Chapters 2–4), I will discuss the context of priestly ministry in England in the tenth and eleventh centuries before arguing that the availability of a certain set of pastoral texts prescribed for priests by early medieval bishops was vital to the provision of pastoral care. Additionally, I assert that Anglo-Saxon priests in general had access to the necessary books through means such as episcopal provision and aristocratic patronage and were sufficiently literate to use these texts. The second section (Chapters 5–7) is divided according to different types of priestly texts and through both documentary evidence and case studies of specific manuscripts, I contend that the analysis of individual priests’ books clarifies our view of pastoral provision and that these books are under-utilized resources in scholars’ attempts to better understand contemporary pastoral care. Furthermore, this thesis will expand the corpus of manuscripts thought to have been used by Anglo-Saxon priests. In particular, I will argue that London, British Library, Cotton Vespasian D. XV and Warsaw, Biblioteka Narodowa, I. 3311 (the Warsaw Lectionary) are best understood as Anglo-Saxon priestly manuscripts.

Riedel, Christopher Tolin. "Monastic Reform and Lay Religion in Æthelwold's Winchester." Thesis, Boston College, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:104635.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Robin Fleming
Bishop Æthelwold of Winchester (d. 984) was a reformer of Anglo-Saxon monasticism, but he was also deeply concerned with the religion of ordinary English laypeople. Whether in his promulgation of the cult of saints, vast elaboration of the liturgy, or extensive rebuilding of Winchester’s churches, Æthelwold demonstrated an interest in the lay religion that has been consistently ignored by modern scholars who fixate on his monastic zeal. This concern for the laity is natural in the context of Æthelwold’s own interpretation of the English past, as his goal of an all-monastic English Church necessitated a pastoral role for his reformed monks rather than their strict seclusion from the world. Such a goal was possible because Æthelwold initiated his reform program in the mid tenth century, when corporate religious life still provided the bulk of pastoral care in Winchester and the rest of southwest England, and the organized parish system was only a dim possibility as small local churches began to appear haphazardly in the north and east of the country. Æthelwold’s reforms were therefore very different from similar ones taking place on the continent or even in the sees of his fellow English reformers, and he attempted to recreate an imagined English past very unlike the Church that would eventually result a century later. The influence of his students, however, especially Wulfstan Cantor and the prolific Ælfric of Eynsham, shows that Æthelwold’s unusual interest in lay religion had far reaching consequences for the medieval English Church

Mosweunyane, Lentswe Donald. "Records management practices of hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality." Thesis, Bloemfontein : Central University of Technology, Free State, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11462/193.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M. Tech. (Business administration)) - Central University of technology, Free State, 2013
This study was necessitated by the fact that being labour intensive, hair salons provide partial solution to South Africa’s high unemployment, poverty and inequality problems hence need to be supported so that they can grow and continue performing their expected labour absorption role. Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality in the North West Province of South Africa is a socio economically depressed area that depends on hair salons for employment. The prosperity of hair salons is therefore critical to the well-being of the inhabitants of the area. Unfortunately, proliferation of hair salon business in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality since the dawn of democracy in South Africa has created fierce competition for customers leading to lack of profitability and hair salons failures. While many reasons can account for business failure in the face of intense competitive environment, there is consensus from the literature that in the current information economy, appropriate management of records allows for quick access to reliable information and this is key to business success. In fact, resource-based view (RBV) of the firm suggests that a company’s quick access to reliable information that is contained in its resources allows that firm to gain sustainable competitive advantage that allows for superior performance. This calls for proper management of a company’s records. Accordingly, it is crucial that managers/owners of hair salons recognise the importance of good records management in their businesses in order to continuously have timely access to accurate information. Unfortunately, the researcher has informally observed a disturbing trend among some hair salons in Dr Ruth Mompati local municipality that flies in the face of what can be termed good records management. An informal visit to some of the salons in the region revealed an apparent laxity with which transactions were recorded. Worst still, Informal conversations with a few hair salons operators seem to suggests that records management may be a problem among hair salons as some even see it as more a liability than asset. This suggests that hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality might not be taking records management seriously. The question then is, how wide spread is this negative attitude towards records keeping in Dr Ruth Mompati local municipality? Or could this be the general sentiment in the hair salon industry as a whole? The purpose of this study was to assess the status of records management among hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality. The key finding of this study is that most hair salons in Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district municipality do practice records management to a certain extent. However, there are certain records that hair salons in the area regard as of no importance and therefore are neglected. The study also revealed that those hair salons that engage in good records management outperform those that do not. The study further revealed that most of the salons keep paper records although they would prefer electronic format. Lack of access to computers was cited as the greatest problem in keeping electronic records. Details of the study including findings, conclusions and recommendations are presented and discussed in the main report.

Bohling, Solange N. "Death, disability, and diversity: An investigation of physical impairment and differential mortuary treatment in Anglo-Saxon England." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/18324.

Full text
Abstract:
Until recently, individuals with physical impairment have been overlooked within the field of archaeology due to the controversy surrounding the topics of disability and care in the past. The current research adds to the growing body of archaeological disability studies with an exploration of physical impairment and the possibility of disability-related care in Anglo-Saxon England (5th-11th centuries AD), utilising palaeopathological, funerary, and documentary analyses. Palaeopathological analysis of 86 individuals with physical impairment from 19 Anglo-Saxon cemetery populations (nine early, five middle, and five later) was performed, and the possibility of disability-related care was explored for several individuals. The mortuary treatment data (e.g. grave orientation, body position, grave good inclusion) was gathered for the entire burial population at each site (N=3,646), and the funerary treatment of the individuals with and without physical impairment was compared statistically and qualitatively, both within and between the Anglo-Saxon periods. No obvious mortuary differentiation of individuals with physical impairment was observed, although several patterns were noted. In three early Anglo-Saxon cemeteries, spatial association between individuals with physical impairment, non-adults, and females was observed. Early Anglo-Saxon individuals with physical impairment were more frequently buried in marginal locations, and two such individuals were buried in isolation. In the middle and later Anglo-Saxon periods, the funerary treatment of individuals with physical impairment became less variable, they were less frequently buried in marginal locations, and at three middle Anglo-Saxon cemeteries, they were buried in association with socially significant features in the cemetery landscape. The provision of care to ensure survival was not necessary for a majority of the individuals with physical impairment, but several individuals (lower limb paralysis, mental impairment) may have received regular, long-term care. This research proposes that the decreasing variability of mortuary treatment of individuals with physical impairment observed throughout the Anglo-Saxon period suggests that more variable attitudes about disability existed both within and between early Anglo-Saxon communities, while the political, social, and religious unification starting in the middle Anglo-Saxon period may have led to the development of more standardised perceptions of disability in later Anglo-Saxon England.

Abstract

Title: When book becomes film... – a comparative analysis of the book and film Catch me if you can (När bok blir till film…En jämförande analys av boken och filmen Catch me if you can)

Number of pages: 46

Author: Majlinda Juniku

Tutor: Amelie Hössjer

Course: Media and Communication Studies C

Period: Autumn term 2007

University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University.

Purpose/Aim: To study what model of dramaturgy belongs to the film Catch me if you can and to see what has been crossed out, altered and added from the book so the narrative will fit this model.

Material/Method: The film Catch me if you can and the book with the same name has been used to analyze the differences between them. I have divided the differences into three categories: Crossed out, Altered and Added. In the analysis section these have been presented in each section of the film.

Main results: Catch me if you can is definetly a film made with the design of the Anglosaxon model, mostly because of its timestructure and that it portrays an action and not just a condition which is normal in the epic-lyric model. Big parts of the story have been crossed out, altered and added to make the film more acceptabel to the audience. Most of the changeshad been done to make the story shorter to fit the timeframe of a film. Events had been joinedtogether to save time but not miss anything. A character, Hanratty, has been reinforced to create a cat-and-mouse story and add excitement to the film. Other changes have been made to make the main character seem more likeable to the audience.

Keywords: book, film, dramaturgy, Catch me if you can, anglo-saxon, epic-lyric

Ghorbel, Mouna. "Régulation de TMKP1, une MAP Kinase Phosphatase de blé, par la calmoduline et des protéines 14-3-3s et analyse de sa contribution dans la réponse des plantes aux stress de l'environnement." Thesis, Toulouse 3, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015TOU30123.

Abstract:
Due to their sessile lifestyle, plants are constantly subjected to a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses causing tremendous yield losses. To survive under these conditions, plants have evolved different sigualing pathways allowing efficient stress responses. The Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase (MAPKs) are key sigual transduction molecules, which respond to varions external stimuli. However, the activity of MAPKs has to be strictly regulated by protein phosphatase such as MAPK Phosphatase (MKPs). ln the present study we describe the regulation ofTMKPI, a wheat MKP, by Calmodulins (CaM) and 14-3-3 proteins. We fust showed that phosphatase activity oTMKP1 is stimulated by K\ Li\ Mg2+ and especially by Mo2+. Using GST pull dawn assays, we demonstrated that TMKP1 binds to CaM in a Ca2+-dependent manner. Moreover, the CaM/Ca2+ complex inhibits the catalytic activity of TMKP1 in a CaM-dose dependent marmer. However, in the presence of Mo2+, this activity is enhanced by CaM/Ca2+ complex. Such effects were not reported so far, and raise a possible role for CaM and Mo 2+ in the regulation of plant MKPs during cellular response to extemal siguals. Moreover, a fine sequence analysis ofTMKPl revealed the presence of a conserved 14-3-3 mode 1 binding site. This finding incited us to perfonn co-immunoprecipitation assays on wheat protein extracts through which we provide proof-of-concept evidence for interaction of TMKP1 with 14-3-3 proteins. Interestingly, the phosphatase activity of TMKP1 was shawn to be enhanced by several plant and yeast 14-3-3 isoforms. Finally, the involvement of TMKP1 in plant stress responses was evaluated. Our data showed that the overexpression of TMKP1 in Arabidopsis resulted in a higher tolerance to salt stresses and to bacterial infection caused by P. syringae. Such findings suggest thal TMKP1 may act as a positive regulator of Arabidopsis responses to salt stresses and P. syringae infection. All together, our results provide novel functional properties for plant MKPs, and should add new knowledge to our understanding of the raie of these phosphatases in the control of MAPK signaling pathways controlling plant responses to various environmental stresses

Ulrich, Kristina. "Molecular epidemiological study on Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus isolates from aquafarms in Scotland over three decades." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/28340.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: RNA viruses are economically important pathogens of fish, and among these viruses, infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is of particular concern for the aquaculture industry, especially for farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). This non-enveloped aquatic virus, which was first isolated in the UK in 1971, belongs to the family of Birnaviridae and has a bi-segmented dsRNA genome of about 6kb. IPNV is classified in 6 genogroups with correspondence to 10 known serotypes and an additional proposed genogroup of marine aquabirnaviruses (MABV). IPNV causes high mortality in fry and a reduced mortality in adult fish, respectively. Fish, which survive, can become carriers and this can lead to a clinical outbreak by releasing infective material into water or by vertical transmission via oocytes, milt and seminal fluids. Methods: This project aimed at determining the phylogeny and genomic changes of IPNV in Scotland by whole genome sequence analysis of IPNV isolates (diagnostic TCID50 supernatants) spanning 3 decades since 1982, using next generation sequencing technology. Viral RNA of IPNV culture supernatant (CHSE-214 and TO cell culture) was processed for next generation sequencing on an Illumina MiSeq platform. Library preparation was performed using the Nextera XT DNA Library Kit, prior to sequencing according to the manufacturer's MiSeq Reagent Kit v3 (150cycles) protocol. To optimize whole genome next generation sequencing for IPNV, we compared two RNA processing protocols, the Glasgow (GLAP) and the Goettingen protocol (GOEP) with focus on missing terminal nucleotides after a de novo genome assembly. Sequences were used to determine the phylogeny and selection pressure on the genome as well as a possible virus-host adaptation. Results: The results showed that both protocols were able to give full length genomes as well as genomes with missing terminal nucleotides. The phylogenetic analysis of 57 sequenced IPVN isolates shows that 78.95 % of the isolates group within genogroup V, which includes serogroup Sp and 5.26 % within genogroup I which includes serogroup Ja. Segment A of 15.79 % of the isolate grouped within genogroup III, which includes serotype Ca1 and Te but only 7.02 % of the segment B isolates grouped in the genogroup III. The remaining 8.77 % of segment B groups within genogroup II, containing the Ab serotype. Previous research has shown that residue substitutions at positions 217 and 221 in the major capsid protein VP2 have an impact on the virulence of the virus, leading to different virulence types: virulent (T217, A221), low virulence (P217, A221), avirulent (T217, T221) and persistent (P217, T221). Whole genome sequence results show that 58.93 % of the sequenced isolates belong to the persistent, 32.14 % to the low virulent type, only one isolate was of a virulent type and 7.15 % had not virulence assigned amino acid compositions in positions 217 and 221. The selection pressure analysis showed that especially VP2 is experiencing selection pressure in the variable region. In the VP1 protein we see two sites under positive selection pressure within specific motifs. VP5 showed positive selected sites mostly within the truncated region of the protein. Other proteins showed no particular interesting sites of selection. The codon adaptation analysis showed highest adaptation index for VP2. Besides VP5, which had an CAI index below one, therefore showing negative adaptation, other IPNV proteins had an CAI of barely above the value of 1. The dinucleotide abundance, focussing on CpG, showed that CpG is underrepresented in segment A and B. Discussion Phylogenetic analysis of the sequenced IPNV strains shows separate clustering of different genogroups. Genetic reassortment is observed in segment B showing a grouping within genogroup III and II although the segment A of these isolates was grouping exclusively within III. We found that over 50 % of the isolates belong to the persistent and over 30 % to the low virulent type, assuming that due to not sterilising vaccination these types were selected in the vaccinated population. The results from the CAI calculations indicate an adaptation of IPNV to its host. Together with the findings that CpG is underrepresented in IPNV it suggests that this leads to an immune escape. Especially since the selection pressure analysis showed positive selection in VP2 within the virulence determination sites of the protein, indicating that IPNV "tries" to downregulate immune recognition. The prevalence of mostly persistent type of isolates indicates together with the assumption of adaptation and immune escape that IPNV is evolving with the host in order to ensure survival.

Automobile purchasing is a high-involvement process for most consumers. Purchase experience and recommendation from others will impact consumer’s final decision. However, automobile manufacturers usually put sales skill before after-sales service, and regarded it as merely one source of revenue. On the other hand, there is few study focus on the relationship between after-sales service cognition and repurchase intention of car buyer. This study, explored the impact on customer satisfaction and repurchase intention from customer relationship, brand image, service quality, and product quality. In addition, this study investigated the moderating effect of after-sales service on the relations between consumer’s satisfaction and repurchase intention. Survey from 120 owners of Mercedes-Benz, the study found that brand image and product quality will be positive impact on customer satisfaction and thus improve the repurchase intention. After-sales service of equipment and professional will strengthen the impact of customer satisfaction on repurchase intention.

O’Dor, Matthew Arnold. "Identification of salmon can-filling defects using machine vision." Thesis, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/7749.

Full text
Abstract:
During the salmon can-filling process, a number of can-filling defects can result from the incorrect insertion of the salmon meat into the cans. These can-filling defects must be repaired before sealing the cans. Thus, in the existing industrial process, every can is manually inspected to identify the defective cans. This thesis details a research project on the use of machine vision for the inspection of filled cans of salmon. The types of can-filling defects were identified and defined through consultations with salmon canning quality assurance experts. Images of can-filling defects were acquired at a production facility. These images were examined and feature extraction algorithms were developed to extract the features necessary for the identification of two types of can-filling defects. Radial basis function networks and fuzzy logic methods for classifying the extracted features were developed. These classification methods are evaluated and compared. A research prototype was designed and constructed to evaluate the machine vision algorithms on-line.

In this study, we adopt support vector machine (SVM) to predict the hair salon wash care product sales volume according to the weather information. With climate-related open data of the Central Weather Bureau including the minimum temperature, maximum temperature, average temperature, average rainfall, wind speed, maximum ten minutes, the maximum instantaneous wind, pressure, humidity, average rainfall for several days and sunshine hours, those weather information are used as the attributes of LibSVM to run the analysis of sales volume prediction. The number of monthly sales volume of the hair salon wash care products from Jan. of 2011 to April of 2016 are collected from Taichung hairdressing salon industry by combining the weather information from Central Weather Burea as the experimental data for the prediction model. The results show that support vector machines can accurately predict the weather information for the sales volume of the hair salon wash care products. The results can help the company of the hair salon wash care products to plan good marketing campaigns and reduce inventory costs.

Rollinson, Njal. "THE ADAPTIVE SIGNIFICANCE OF EGG-SIZE VARIATION WITHIN AND AMONG POPULATIONS OF ATLANTIC SALMON." 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10222/31512.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the classic problem of investment per offspring. It is an attempt to (i) reconcile theoretical research with empirical methods that can be used to test theory, (ii) test a fundamental prediction that arises from classic theory, and (iii) test one of the more recent theoretical developments. We use Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) as a model organism. Drawing from the classic Smith–Fretwell model, we provide defensible definitions of offspring fitness that can be used in empirical studies, and we show using simulation that the Weibull-1 statistical model provides the best estimates of optimal investment patterns. Next, we apply these methods to mark-recapture data collected for juvenile Atlantic salmon. This experiment supports the prediction that parental reproductive success is maximized by increasing investment per offspring when environmental conditions become unfavourable. Having verified this prediction, we test a general extension of classic theory which broadly suggests that large-bodied females decrease the quality of the offspring environment, such that larger females in a population ought to invest relatively heavily in investment per offspring. This might occur, for example, when larger females have a greater fecundity and if optimal investment per offspring increases with sibling competition among non-dispersive offspring. The results of this experiment generally do not support the idea that large females decrease the quality of the offspring environment in Atlantic salmon. Finally, we also provide evidence against a verbal hypothesis that attempts to explain inter-population variation in egg size of salmonids as an adaptation to population-specific spawning substrates. We conclude that the classic model of egg-size optimization can be a useful tool for understanding patterns of reproductive allocation in nature, but that investment per offspring is an extremely complex trait that cannot be fully understood by invoking a simple optimality model. Variation in investment per offspring, especially that which occurs within populations, is most parsimoniously attributed to the physiological factors (e.g., variation in testosterone levels), morphological constraints (e.g., the size of the pelvic aperture) and genetic factors (e.g., genetic correlations arising from pleiotropic genes) that affect this phenotype and that constrain adaptive evolution of this trait.

Abstract:
I describe temporal changes in the genetic composition of a small anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) population from South Newfoundland, an area where salmon populations are considered as Threatened (COSEWIC 2010). I examined the genetic variability (13 microsatellite loci) in 869 out-migrating smolt and post-spawning kelt samples, collected from 1985 to 2011 for a total of 22 annual collections and a 30 year span of assigned cohorts. I estimated the annual effective number of breeders (Nb) and the generational effective population size (Ne) through genetic methods and demographically using the anadromous sex ratio. Comparisons between genetic and demographic estimates show that the anadromous spawners inadequately explain the observed Ne estimates, suggesting that mature male parr are significantly increasing Nb and Ne over the study period. Spawning as parr appears to be a viable and important strategy in the near absence of anadromous males.

OUBRECHTOVÁ, Marcela. ""Kéž bych byl malířem." František Thun v době předbřeznové." Master's thesis, 2008. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-50369.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns a peer Francis Thun (1809-1871) who was one of the most important personalities in the public and cultural life in Bohemia from the 30s till the end of the 60s of the 19th century. Thun {--} a gifted visual artist himself - was particularly interested in the institutions connected with the visual art. The author shows where his long-life interest in the visual arts was formed. She follows his childhood, upbringing, his own artistic beginning and his studies. She particularly considers his ways around Europe and his stay in Dresden, that used to be one of the most important centres of the European Romanticism, and more than a year-long traveling around England, western Europe and Italy. The last part of this thesis deliberates František Thun{\crq}s public activities {--} mainly his work in the artistic politics and in the care of monuments. This work also follows Thun{\crq}s personal life, particularly his marriage with a burgher girl thanks to it he couldn{\crq}t inherite the fideicommissum. This biography is mainly based on personal materials {--} letters and diaries. In terms of them it attempts to show Thun{\crq}s personality and his important life moments.

Due to the availability of historical evidence, the studied period begins in 597 with the arrival of Christian missionaries from Rome and ends prior to the Norman Conquest in 1066. The kings' approach to the written word is analyzed on the basis of surviving literary and iconographic evidence, i.e. on documents composed for or by the rulers, and on the visual images of the rulers as portrayed in surviving manuscripts. The first chapter provides a historical background necessary for the correct interpretation of the examined texts and portraits. This section is aimed at the main concepts discussed in the thesis: medieval authorship, medieval kingship, and the spread of Christianity within the Anglo- Saxon kingdoms. The second chapter offers the analysis of written documents and focuses on the texts composed within the scope of King Alfred's educational and religious reform. The close reading of the OE translations demonstrates the king's use of the texts as didactic tools mainly serving to promote religion and learning within the kingdom. The key texts are Gregory's Pastoral Care, Augustine's Soliloquies, and Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy; an additional context of the king's life and...
