Abstract:
AbstractThe place of the non-human animal in the legal world has been questioned. Animals’ legal status as property has been probed on how to best protect their welfare. While this is significant for animals who are not on the farm, it might not be effective when considering animals raised for food. The case of the carabao, or the water buffalo, in the Philippines is seen as a hybrid. This article traces the development of the carabao in Philippine history during the nineteenth century. Through historical, archival, and legal research on animals, the carabao is situated as private property. Colonial instruments of control were introduced to protect the carabao from criminals. In its proper historical context, the classification of carabaos as property indeed highlighted the animal’s status as legally owned, which did not necessarily demean the animal’s relationship with the human peasant nor the carabao’s quality as an animal.

Abstract:
Forty-nine species/subspecies of carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were identified from specimens previously collected from several locations in Turkey. The identified specimens represented the subfamilies Carabinae (Tribe Carabini), Nebriinae (Tribe Notiophilini), Trechinae (Tribe Bembidiini), Pterostichinae (Tribes Agonini, Pterostichini, Zabrini), Harpalinae (Tribe Harpalini), Callistinae (Tribes Licinini, Callistini), Lebiinae (Tribe Lebiini), and Brachininae (Tribe Brachinini). The majority (n = 20) of species/subspecies represented the subfamily Harpalinae. All species/subspecies identified had been previously reported from Turkey; however, the reported distribution of each was expanded into additional provinces with this study. The majority of the new records were from Niğde (n = 24) and Ankara (n = 15). Other new records were from Aksaray (5), Nevşehir (3), Sinop (2), Samsun (2), Rize (2), Afyon (1), Konya (1), and Kayseri (1). These data add to our knowledge of carabid distribution in Turkey.

Abstract:
Post mortem epididymal sperm (ES) is an excellent source of germplasm for conservation of animal genetic resources. In this study, the viability of post mortem ES from carabao after collection at ambient temperature (AT) and after 24 hr and 48 hr of storage at refrigeration temperature (RT) were evaluated. ES were collected through slicing of epididymides from 7 carabaos. The mean ES volume was 0.4 ml with sperm concentration of 2.5×109 cells/ml. The mean percentage livability of fresh ES, after 24 hr and 48 hr of storage at RT were 81.93%, 65.93% and 43.7%, respectively. The mean percentage abnormalities of fresh ES, after 24 hr and 48 hr of storage at RT were 44.15%, 38.5% and 43.47%, respectively. The mean percentage motility of fresh ES, after 24 hr and 48 hr of storage at RT were 60.0%, 50.0% and 17.24%, respectively, after analysis through conventional means. Through CASA, the mean percentage motility was observed to be lower significantly at 26.12%, 37.94% and 18.32% for fresh ES, after 24 hr and 48 hr of storage at RT, respectively. The mean progressive motility of fresh ES, after 24 hr and 48 hr storage at RT were 10.02%, 16.47% and 10.87%, respectively. The results suggest that ES potential for use in fertilization studies remained viable when used immediately or after storage at RT for the first 24 hr.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Carabaya people from peru and kallawaya people from bolivia formed before the inka times and in the inkanato a single kurakazgo or chieftainship whose the two halves, hatun and huchuy, have been separated during the spanish colony. Carabaya kallawaya have played a political part in the tawantinsuyu and their territory has been the gateway to the chunchu's and anti's world. Moreover, they have been favoured by the inka. This is due to the fact that their activities have taken on, and still take on an eminent sacred and symbolic character : the hatun carabaya half was specialized in the gold production, coca and corn, whereas the huchuy carabaya half turned out itinerant healer-medicine men, holder from shamanic secrets. Ancient texts, but also the tradition lived today permit to rediscover the unity of the ancient kurakazgo cut in two by the hazards of history. Beyond the parting, carabaya from peru and kallawaya from bolivia perpetuated in a parallel way their common tradition and the complementarity from the two halves and have maintained alive their perception from the world by assimilation of new elements from modernity. This is recognizable through the representation system and in the realizations and technics, particularly in the medicine art and in the weawing whose the symbolic aspect is obvious. On both sides of the border, carabaya kallawaya have unfolded strategies of adaptation and resistance sometimes different, but they are still recognizable as an ethnical entity

Abstract:
Cardiac hypertrophy is an adaptative mechanism developed in response to hemodynamic overload. During chronic stress, it can lead to heart failure (HF), one of the most important causes of mortality in industrialized countries. Hypertrophic signaling pathway induced under α and β-adrenergic receptor involve small G protein Ras and calcium dependent proteins suchas the calcineurine (CaN) and the Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases II (CaMKII), as well as their respective transcription factors NFAT and MEF2. In immune cells Carabin protein has been shown to inhibit CaN and Ras. The purpose of my thesis was to determine the role of Carabin in the cardiomyocyte. In vitro, we showed that Carabin is expressed in neonatal and adult rat cardiomyocyte and inhibits via its functional domains the Ras/ERK, CaN/NFAT and CaMKII/MEF2 signaling pathways. Under adrenergic chronic stimulation, Carabin overexpression blocks the development of hypertrophic markers (cell size increase, re-expression of embryonic genesand contractile protein reorganisation) preventing thus cardiac remodeling. Finally, in a rat model pressure overload cardiac hypertrophy, intra-cardiac injection of Carabin adenovirus inhibits cardiomyocyte growth. This study opens new insights into the treatment of HF

Abstract:
The training of specialised French physicians is studied through liminary behaviours belonging to cultural customs, with their own symbolic efficacy. During internship, some stages appear. First, dissections, which will forever differentiate doctors from all others. Next, after discussion of specifics about French internship, the "manners" students have to learn during their internship: a baptism celebrates their entrance into their new community; specific rules or manners characteristic to their staff waiting rooms; finaly, funerals which end their lives as interns. In addition, revues, satirical shows created by the youngest for the eldest, show the continuity and coherence of the career and the logic of the cultural customs studied here. Finaly, these apprenticeship years appear as a true initiation that changes those who go through it as such forever. The originality of this training lies first in the fact that official and traditional knowledges are built and learned together, in the middle of the hospital; and second in the subject of medical training itself, which leads to repeated transgression of the taboos of death, nudity and sexuality

Abstract:
This report describes the construction work of a radar antenna for the radar system CARABAS. CARABAS is a long wave airborne ground radar that has been developed by SAAB Microwave Systems and will now be mounted on a small helicopter, Schweizer 300. The antenna should be able to fold up and down. When the radar is in use the antenna is lowered and under transport, start and landing the antenna is folded up. An emergency drop function should also be included in the design of CARABAS III. The extent of this report includes construction of the antenna, frame structure attached to the helicopter, mechanism for folding the antenna up and down and mechanism for emergency drop function. The mechanical design of the antenna and frame structure is based on modal and stress analysis, vibration measurement of Schweizer 300 and frequency analysis, and calculations regarding aerodynamic drag and mechanics. The exciting frequencies of the helicopter and accelerations at those frequencies were determined by vibration measurement and frequency analysis. Including outer exciting frequencies, frequencies of the main rotor, complete information of where the antennas eigenfrequencies should lie was established. The design of the antenna and frame structure and the laminate composition in the antenna was determined by the modal analysis of the total system, both antenna and frame structure. Hence the systems eigenfrequencies does not coincide with the exciting frequencies of the helicopter. The frame structure is pressed against the cargo frame of the helicopter at four support points by a mechanism consisting of a beam with a pin joint and a spring loaded bolt. The beam is attached to the cargo hook of the helicopter which can be opened from the cockpit. Hence CARABAS III can be released from the helicopter in case of emergency. The loads on antenna and frame structure constitute of drag and inertia forces and were calculated analytically. The loads were used as input data in the stress analysis performed on antenna and frame structure and to design the folding mechanism and mechanism for pretention of the frame structure against the cargo frame. According to the performed stress analysis the antenna and components in the frame structure will hold the loads that they are subjected to.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Cardiac hypertrophy is an adaptive mechanism which occurs in response to hemodynamic stress. However, disease-related stresses can promote pathological cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure (HF). At present, our understanding of cardiac hypertrophy and pathological remodeling is still incomplete. In the first part of our study, we characterized Carabin, a protein expressed in cardiomyocytes that was downregulated in cardiac hypertrophy and HF. Four weeks after transverse aortic constriction (TAC), Carabin deficient mice developed exaggerated cardiac hypertrophy and accelerated the transition from hypertrophy to HF. Conversely, cardiac overexpression of Carabin through a gene transfer approach prevented TAC induced cardiac remodeling. Mechanistically, Carabin carries out a tripartite suppressive function. Indeed, Carabin through its Calcineurin (CaN) interacting site and Ras- GAP domain acts as an endogenous inhibitor of Ras and two calcium sensitive proteins, CaN and CaMKII. In the second part, we investigated the role of Epac1 (Exchange protein directly activated by cAMP 1) in béta -adrenergic receptors (béta -ARs)- induced cardiac hypertrophy. Our data showed that Epac1 deletion in mice protected against béta-ARs induced cardiac remodeling and improved cardiac function. Interestingly, béta-ARs-Epac1 activation promoted autophagic activity via Rap2B/CaMKKbéta/AMPK pathway to inhibit Epac1-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. All of this work has identified the roles and mechanisms of action of Carabin and Epac1 in cardiac hypertrophy. Our study opens new therapeutic avenues for the treatment of HF
