Abstract:
AbstractThe place of the non-human animal in the legal world has been questioned. Animals’ legal status as property has been probed on how to best protect their welfare. While this is significant for animals who are not on the farm, it might not be effective when considering animals raised for food. The case of the carabao, or the water buffalo, in the Philippines is seen as a hybrid. This article traces the development of the carabao in Philippine history during the nineteenth century. Through historical, archival, and legal research on animals, the carabao is situated as private property. Colonial instruments of control were introduced to protect the carabao from criminals. In its proper historical context, the classification of carabaos as property indeed highlighted the animal’s status as legally owned, which did not necessarily demean the animal’s relationship with the human peasant nor the carabao’s quality as an animal.

Abstract:
Forty-nine species/subspecies of carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were identified from specimens previously collected from several locations in Turkey. The identified specimens represented the subfamilies Carabinae (Tribe Carabini), Nebriinae (Tribe Notiophilini), Trechinae (Tribe Bembidiini), Pterostichinae (Tribes Agonini, Pterostichini, Zabrini), Harpalinae (Tribe Harpalini), Callistinae (Tribes Licinini, Callistini), Lebiinae (Tribe Lebiini), and Brachininae (Tribe Brachinini). The majority (n = 20) of species/subspecies represented the subfamily Harpalinae. All species/subspecies identified had been previously reported from Turkey; however, the reported distribution of each was expanded into additional provinces with this study. The majority of the new records were from Niğde (n = 24) and Ankara (n = 15). Other new records were from Aksaray (5), Nevşehir (3), Sinop (2), Samsun (2), Rize (2), Afyon (1), Konya (1), and Kayseri (1). These data add to our knowledge of carabid distribution in Turkey.

Abstract:
Post mortem epididymal sperm (ES) is an excellent source of germplasm for conservation of animal genetic resources. In this study, the viability of post mortem ES from carabao after collection at ambient temperature (AT) and after 24 hr and 48 hr of storage at refrigeration temperature (RT) were evaluated. ES were collected through slicing of epididymides from 7 carabaos. The mean ES volume was 0.4 ml with sperm concentration of 2.5×109 cells/ml. The mean percentage livability of fresh ES, after 24 hr and 48 hr of storage at RT were 81.93%, 65.93% and 43.7%, respectively. The mean percentage abnormalities of fresh ES, after 24 hr and 48 hr of storage at RT were 44.15%, 38.5% and 43.47%, respectively. The mean percentage motility of fresh ES, after 24 hr and 48 hr of storage at RT were 60.0%, 50.0% and 17.24%, respectively, after analysis through conventional means. Through CASA, the mean percentage motility was observed to be lower significantly at 26.12%, 37.94% and 18.32% for fresh ES, after 24 hr and 48 hr of storage at RT, respectively. The mean progressive motility of fresh ES, after 24 hr and 48 hr storage at RT were 10.02%, 16.47% and 10.87%, respectively. The results suggest that ES potential for use in fertilization studies remained viable when used immediately or after storage at RT for the first 24 hr.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Trichomonads are obligate anaerobes generally found in the digestive and genitourinary tract of domestic animals. In this study, four trichomonad isolates were obtained from carabao, dog, and pig hosts using rectal swab. Genomic DNA was extracted using Chelex method and the 18S rRNA gene was successfully amplified through novel sets of primers and undergone DNA sequencing. Aligned isolate sequences together with retrieved 18S rRNA gene sequences of known trichomonads were utilized to generate phylogenetic trees using maximum likelihood and neighbor-joining analyses. Two isolates from carabao were identified asSimplicimonas similiswhile each isolate from dog and pig was identified asPentatrichomonas hominisandTrichomitus batrachorum, respectively. This is the first report ofS. similisin carabao and the identification ofT. batrachorumin pig using 18S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The generated phylogenetic tree yielded three distinct groups mostly with relatively moderate to high bootstrap support and in agreement with the most recent classification. Pathogenic potential of the trichomonads in these hosts still needs further investigation.

Abstract:
We consider the rope climber fall problem in two different settings. The simplest formulation of the problem is when the climber falls from a given altitude and is attached to one end of the rope while the other end of the rope is attached to the rock at a given height. The problem is then finding the properties of the rope for which the peak force felt by the climber during the fall is minimal. The second problem of our consideration is again minimizing the same quantity in the presence of a carabiner. We will call such ropes mathematically ideal. Given the height of the carabiner, the initial height and the mass of the climber, the length of the unstretched rope and the distance between the belayer and the carabiner, we find the optimal (in the sense of minimized the peak force to a given elongation) dynamic rope in the framework of nonlinear elasticity. Wires of shape memory materials have some of the desired features of the tension–strain relation of a mathematically ideal dynamic rope, namely, a plateau in the tension over a range of strains. With a suitable hysteresis loop, they also absorb essentially all the energy from the fall, thus making them an ideal rope in this sense too.

Antimicrobial Efficacy of Carabao Grass (Paspalum conjugatum) leaves on Staphylococcus aureus Dani Aiko Garduque1, Kyrie Radiance Mateo1, Shalom Moyinoluwa Oyinloye1, and Jo Anne Kristine Lalas-Lucero2 1Student, Adventist University of the Philippines 2Faculty, Adventist University of the Philippines jakllucero@aup.edu.ph Abstract Introduction: In the Philippines, the Paspalum conjugatum or known by its common name as “carabao grass” is usually consumed for livestock as well as for landscaping. Paspalum conjugatum has been known to have phytochemicals that kill microorganisms. This experimental research determined the antimicrobial efficacy of Paspalum conjugatum against Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: Samples of the carabao grass was purchased, washed and then dried. An extract was obtained from the sample. The extract was then sent to an accredited testing center for phytochemical test to identify the different components of the plant extract. The antimicrobial activity of the paspalum conjugatum extract was then determined through the use of the disc diffusion method. The zone of inhibition of Paspalum Conjugatum was also compared to a control standard such as oxacillin. Results: The results of the study revealed to have abundant constituents of sterols, flavonoids and tannins; moderate levels of triterpenes, saponins and glycosides; and traces of alkaloids. The antimicrobial testing showed results that Paspalum Conjugatum had 10mm zone of inhibition which means that it has a complete inhibitory activity with severe reactivity against the tested organism, staphylococcus aureus. Discussion: The study concludes that Paspalum conjugatum can be used to eliminate staphylococcus aureus. It is recommended that further studies be conducted for the use of Paspalum conjugatum in the treatment and prevention of diseases caused by staphylococcus aureus. Keywords: paspalum conjugatum, carabao grass, staphylococcus aureus

Abstract:
This study was conducted to find out the effect of fertilizers on the performance of two hybrids of Euphorbia as indicated by growth and flowering performance. The experimental design with controlled variables was used in the study. The use of organic fertilizers like the use of animal dungs or wastes was proven effective based on the different trials made. In terms of the effect of the fertilizers in the growth performance, there were significant differences on plant height, stem girth, number of leaves, and number of shoots during the 20th, 50th and 80th days of observations. The number of flowers was found to have significant differences in all stages. When measured during the 80th day of observation, significant differences were shown in the size of flowers. However, insignificant difference was shown in the diameter of flower bracts. As to the growth parameters, carabao manure yielded more leaves, and shoots and taller Euphorbia Orchid. It also produced bigger stem girths, wider and longer leaf sizes of Siam Ruby hybrid. As to flowering parameters, carabao manure influenced the growth of more number of flower clusters and bigger sizes of flowers of Euphorbia Orchid. On the other hand, chicken manure also influenced the growth of more number of flowers per cluster of Siam Ruby during the 50th day observation and carabao manure during the 20th day observation.

Abstract:
Mango is one of the most important fruits in the Philippines, with the Carabao variety being the most widely grown dominating the export market. However, the production of Carabao mangoes for export has dropped due to insect pests and diseases, resulting in serious postharvest decay. Anthracnose is the most common of these diseases. DigiMango is a mobile application that identifies the severity of anthracnose in Carabao mangoes during postharvest. The application offers to quantitatively evaluate the development of spot-like lesions on the surface of the mango and produce disease ratings. However, because this application is created for use in laboratory conditions, the mangoes used in the planning and testing were already pre-evaluated and the diseases pre-identified, with the application’s sole purpose providing convenience and objective rating evaluations to the researchers. The application was able to map the lesions by capturing the four sides of the mango using the smartphone’s camera and converted the process using a combination of the following: cannyedge detection, morphological transformation, contour approximation, and a thresholding algorithm. After thorough evaluation of the application, the study has proven that the use of the DigiMango application is acceptable and positively correlated with the experts’ rating. Any difference with the hedonic scales used by the researchers is not statistically significant.

Abstract:
Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, is the most serious production and postharvest problem of mango. Most mango cultivars are highly susceptible to this disease. Embryogenic nucellar cultures of two cultivars, `Hindi' and `Carabao', were recurrently selected with either the purified phytotoxin or the crude culture filtrate produced by the fungus. Mycelium growth was suppressed in dual cultures involving the recurrently selected lines. Enhanced extracellular production of proteins was observed in the embryogenic cultures and in regenerants, including a newly expressed acidic chitinase isozyme (`Hindi') and greater expression of two other chitinase isozymes (`Hindi' and `Carabao'). Activity of α-1,3-glucanase was also substantially increased in the recurrently selected lines. Resistant lines were characterized using RAPDs on the basis of polymorphisms generated by eight different primers. In most cases, the differences involved the absence of RAPD markers in resistant lines.

Abstract:
In Romania, suckling lamb meat is on demand during the Easter, but growing suckling lambs just for this purpose is not profitable. The paper performed a comparative study of the fattening aptitudes of the lambs from three local sheep breeds to produce carcasses demanded on the international market. The research was done on three groups (Carabash, Tsigai and Tsurcana breeds) of 16 weaned lambs each, with an initial weight between 21-27 kg and continued until the animals reached an weight of 35-38 kg. The experiment started after a period of accommodation to the experimental maintenance and feeding conditions. The animals were kept indoors under similar conditions of feeding and microclimate. The body weight of the animals was measured at the beginning and end of each fattening period, as well as the average daily gain and the total weight gain for each breed. During the late period of fattening, control weighing was performed until the target weight has been achieved. The Carabash lambs, which had the highest lambing weights of all the investigated breeds, proved to be the most precocious as weight gain. Over 44 fattening days they recorded an average daily gain of 0.258?0.016 kg, reaching a slaughtering weight of 38.46?1.178 kg with a feed conversion ratio of 4.66 FU. The Tsigai lambs, less precocious than the Carabash lambs, recorded an average daily gain of 0.191?0.043 kg, over 86 days 86, reaching a slaughtering weight of 37.16?0.130 kg, with a significantly higher feed conversion ratio, of 6.35 FU. The Tsurcana lambs, on the bottom position as fattening aptitudes, reached and average daily weight of 0.154?0.0142 kg over 91 days, reaching a slaughtering weight of 35.25?1.445 kg with a feed conversion ratio of 6.44FU.

Abstract:
Abstract Some highly isolated oceanic islands harbour endemic ground beetles that have lost the ability to fly. Here, we investigated the origin of the possibly extinct flightless giant ground beetle Aplothorax burchelli on St Helena Island in the South Atlantic. Aplothorax burchelli was initially considered to be a member of the subtribe Calosomina (=genus Calosoma) of the subfamily Carabinae (Coleoptera: Carabidae) closely related to the genus Ctenosta (=Calosoma subgenus Ctenosta), but this proposition was questioned due to its unique external and genital morphology. We conducted a phylogenetic analysis of mitogenome sequences using historical specimens of A. burchelli and samples of representative species of Carabinae. Our analysis of 13 protein-coding gene sequences revealed that A. burchelli is definitely a member of Calosomina, most closely related to a species of Ctenosta. Further analysis using NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 gene sequences from most groups in Calosomina showed that A. burchelli formed a monophyletic group with Ctenosta species from Africa and Madagascar. Our results suggest that the ancestor of A. burchelli, which had the ability to fly, colonized St Helena from Africa after the emergence of the island 14 Mya, and has since undergone evolutionary changes in conjunction with loss of flight.

Abstract:
In the early 1960s two editions of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart were published with competing sets of illustrations. The first, by Dennis Carabine, illustrates a realist novel, the second, by Uche Okeke, a modernist one. Reading Achebe's iconic novel through its early publication history and for its visual images shows how the famous ending of Things Fall Apart turns, stylistically, to the impenetrable flatness of the modernist surface. At mid-century, modernist style could be made to serve realist imperatives, and Achebe's flat style challenges colonial modes of literary representation and the myth of modernist primitivism in the visual arts. This essay stresses the importance of the visual image to mid-century anglophone literature and the importance of modernist style to the poetics of decolonization.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
We describe a new species of small strabomantid frog (genusPsychrophrynella) from a humid montane forest in the Peruvian Department of Puno. Specimens were collected at 2,225 m a.s.l. in the leaf litter of primary montane forest near Thiuni, along the Macusani–San Gabán road, in the province of Carabaya. The new species is assigned toPsychrophrynellaon the basis of morphological similarity, including presence of a tubercle on the inner edge of the tarsus, and call composed of multiple notes. We also include genetic distances for 16S rRNA partial sequences between the new species and other strabomantid frogs. The species with lowest genetic distances arePsychrophrynella chirihampatuandPsychrophrynella usurpator. Psychrophrynella glaucasp. n. is readily distinguished from the three other species ofPsychrophrynella(Psychrophrynella bagrecito,P. chirihampatu, andP. usurpator) by its small size, and by having belly and ventral surfaces of legs reddish-brown or red, and chest and throat brown to dark brown with a profusion of bluish-gray flecks. The new species is only known from its type locality. With the discovery ofP. glauca, the geographic distribution ofPsychrophrynellais extended to the Department of Puno, where it was no longer represented after the description of the genusMicrokayla. Furthermore, the Cordillera de Carabaya is the only mountain range known to be home to four of the seven genera of Holoadeninae (Bryophryne,Microkayla,Noblella, andPsychrophrynella), suggesting an intriguing evolutionary history for this group in southern Peru.
