Vasudevan, Shanthi. "Simultaneous Measurement of Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide Saturation using Pulse Oximeters." Digital WPI, 2011. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-theses/330.

Abstract:
The ability of pulse oximeters to measure carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) in blood or measure accurate values of oxygen saturation (SpO2) in the presence of elevated levels of HbCO is an important advantage because high exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) can be fatal or results in permanent neurological damage. The aim of my research was to develop an algorithm that would measure SpO2 and SpCO simultaneously using a pulse oximeter. Several specific wavelengths at which changes in SpCO and SpO2 can be measured with high sensitivity and specificity were identified. The choice of these wavelengths was exp

In this thesis, the measurements of carbon monoxide (CO) obtained from an nadir sounding Measurement Of Pollution In The troposphere (MOPITT) instrument are used. Atmospheric CO is one of the most abundant and widely distributed air pollutant and is a very important indirect greenhouse gas via its reaction with the OH radical which in turn controls the oxidising capacity of the troposphere. In this thesis, the MOPITT Level 2 Version 3 (L2V3) retrieved CO data is primarily used and compared with recently released (April 2009) Level 2 Version 4 (L2V4) retrieved CO data to examine the potential o

Black carbon (BC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are two atmospheric pollutants produced by motor vehicles using carbonaceous fuels. As a part of the Mexico City Project, measurements of BC, PPAHs and many other gas- and particle-phase emissions were measured in Mexico City using a mobile laboratory during the Mexico City Metropolitan Area field campaign in April 2003 (MCMA-2003). The main goal of this research is to estimate emissions of BC and particulate PAHs (PPAHs) for Mexico Cityâ s vehicle fleet. Concentrations of CO, CO₂, and O₂ in woodstove flue gases are some of the measured inputs required by algorithms used to calculate woodstove efficiency by the stack loss method. Concentrations of CO, CO₂, and O₂ in a series of flue gas samples were measured using a variety of independent measurement techniques for each compound. Poor air quality has been projected to be the world’s top cause of environmental premature mortality by 2050 surpassing poor sanitation and dirty water (IGBP / IGAC press release, 2012 ). One of the major challenges of air quality management is how to adequately quantify both the spatial and temporal variations of pollutants for the purpose of implementing necessary mitigation measures. The work described in this thesis aims to address this problem using novel electrochemical based air quality (AQ) sensors. Convective and long-range transport of air mass controls the global distributions and impacts of the pollutants generated in limited source regions.
