Full text
Abstract:
The giant columnar cardon cactus (Pachycereus pringlei) appears to have an ailment(s) that is destroying a large number of plants. The causal agent(s), whether biotic or abiotic, has yet to be determined. Two forms of symptom development have been recorded. The first is a circular tissue decay on a branch leading to death of the growing tip. In this case, the dead portion detaches and forms a "flat top" on the living part (hence the proposed name for this phenomenon). Progressive degeneration and death of the plant ensue. The second form is an initial circular crack on the branch without decay. Later, the green branch above the crack detaches, creating the characteristic flat top. A third type of degeneration was also observed: fatal bleaching. The time period between symptoms is unknown. It primarily affects mature, more than 100-year-old plants, but relatively young plants are also affected. Thirty-one field surveys covering the entire state of Baja California Sur found four major and three smaller centers of flat top decay. We believe that flat top decay syndrome of the cardon cacti in Baja California is common and widespread. Key words: cactus decay, cactus deformation, cactus diseases, columnar cacti, Pachycereus, phytopathology.

Abstract:
An investigation of the factors which affect lead time in spinning mills producing carded and combed counts is reported. Data were collected from 27 mills producing 40 Ne Carded Yarn and 9 mills producing 40 Ne Combed Yarn. A number of 13 parameters which affect lead time were identified and they are FQI (Fibre Quality Index), Roving Production, CSP (Count Strength Product), Yarn Realisation, Spindle Production, Top Arm Roller Pressure (Front), Top Arm Roller Pressure (Middle), Top Arm Roller Pressure (Back), End Breaks, UKG, HOK (the number of Operative Hours required to produce 100 kg of yarn), YQI (Yarn Quality Index), Machine Utilisation. Multiple linear regression analysis have been carried out to find out the dominant parameters which affect lead time. While 71.4% of the variables account for lead time in respect of carded counts, about 78.4% of the variables have dominating influence in combed yarns.

Toe paper compares sorne of the possíble reasons for the radical change of locale and overseas travel far away from home in the case of the New Zealand writer Katherine Mansfield and especially the Slovenian author Alma Maximiliana Karlin in the early twentieth-century, which shows an interesting parallelism and search for the 'othemess' of experience beyond their respective homelands. If Mansfield decided to leave New Zealand for London to study, and for the second time to avoid the provincial climate at home, then the Slovenian travel writer Alma Karlin decided to leave Europe for Asia and New Zealand at roughly the same time as Mansfield arrived in the modemist literary Bloomsbury area in London. Toe publication of Mansfield's famous collection, I11e Carden Parti; and Other Ston·es (1922), and Karlin's travel book, Solitan; Journey (Die Einsame Weltreise, 1929), almost coincided, although the two women authors never met.

The starting material [ Ru ( por )( CO )] was treated with corresponding diazo compounds N 2 CR 1 R 2 in CH 2 Cl 2 or octane for the diaryl carbene complexes 1', 2-4 and 6, while it was subjected to photolysis in THF , followed by reflux with the diazo compounds for the acyl carbene complexes 5' and 7-9. The compounds were robust in octane under reflux and were able to catalyze cyclopropanation reactions with methyl diazoacetate (MDA) toward a wide variety of alkenes. Monocyclopropanation of 25 alkenes was demonstrated with catalyst 3 in octane under reflux. By reaction with more than equimolar amounts of MDA in the presence of catalyst 9, the first porphyrin-catalyzed biscyclopropanation was attained toward nonconjugated α, ω-dienes, viz. 1,5-hexadiene and 1,7-octadiene.

Abstract:
The paper is reporting an extensive experimental investigation to optimize the processing of microfibers on a flat top card. Carding parameters, type of fiber finish and their interactions were studied in terms of their impact on web quality. The web quality was determined by assessing the nep content and fiber breakage due to carding. Statistical analyses of the data indicate that fiber finish and processing parameters can be selected to minimize neps and fiber breakage during carding. Furthermore the investigation showed that there is a strong correlation between the incidents of neps and the increase in short fiber content during carding. An additional finding of this study is that the generation of neps was not uniform across the width of the carded web and is influenced by fiber load measured on the doffer in the cross machine direction.

Abstract:
The coordination versatility of a 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene-tris-mesoionic carbene ligand is illustrated by the preparation of complexes with three different metals: rhodium, iridium and nickel. The rhodium and iridium complexes contained the [MCl(COD)] fragments, while the nickel compound contained [NiCpCl]. The preparation of the tris-MIC (MIC = mesoionic carbene) complex with three [IrCl(CO)2] fragments, allowed the estimation of the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) for the ligand, which was compared with the TEP value for a related 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene-tris-NHC ligand. The electronic properties of the tris-MIC ligand were studied by cyclic voltammetry measurements. In all cases, the tris-MIC ligand showed a stronger electron-donating character than the corresponding NHC-based ligands. The catalytic activity of the tri-rhodium complex was tested in the addition reaction of arylboronic acids to α,β-unsaturated ketones.

Abstract:
Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. A variety of factors can contribute to the onset of this disease, including viral infection, obesity, alcohol abuse and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). These stressors predominantly introduce chronic inflammation leading to liver cirrhosis and finally the onset of HCC; however, approximately 20% of HCC cases arise in the absence of cirrhosis via a poorly defined mechanism. The atypical cyclin-like protein Spy1 is capable of overriding cell cycle checkpoints, promoting proliferation and has been implicated in HCC. We hypothesize that Spy1 promotes sustained proliferation making the liver more susceptible to accumulation of deleterious mutations, leading to the development of non-cirrhotic HCC. We report for the first time that elevation of Spy1 within the liver of a transgenic mouse model leads to enhanced spontaneous liver tumourigenesis. We show that the abundance of Spy1 enhanced fat deposition within the liver and decreased the inflammatory response. Interestingly, Spy1 transgenic mice have a significant reduction in fibrosis and sustained rates of hepatocyte proliferation, and endogenous levels of Spy1 are downregulated during the normal fibrotic response. Our results provide support that abnormal regulation of Spy1 protein drives liver tumorigenesis in the absence of elevated fibrosis and, hence, may represent a potential mechanism behind non-cirrhotic HCC. This work may implicate Spy1 as a prognostic indicator and/or potential target in the treatment of diseases of the liver, such as HCC. The cyclin-like protein Spy1 enhances lipid deposition and reduces fibrosis in the liver. Spy1 also promotes increased hepatocyte proliferation and onset of non-cirrhotic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Thus, Spy1 may be used as a potential target in the treatment of HCC.

Abstract:
Aim: to elucidate predictors of high level of basal triglycerides (TG) in blood of children of persons with early (onset: men ≤55, women ≤60 years) ischemic heart disease (EIHD).Materials and methods. We examined 316 families: patients (probands) (n=295; 77.9 % after MI) with EIHD, their spouses (n=219; 83.1 % women) and native children of probands (n=413; 55.7 % men) aged 5–38 years. In children aged 5–17 and 18–38 years proband’s spouse was mother in 88 and 77 % of cases, respectively. Hypertriglyceridemia in children (HTG) was defined in persons aged 5–17 years as ≥90 percentile (Lipid Research Clinics), ≥18 years – ≥1.7 mmol / l or HTG drug treatment. Predictors of HTG were selected by binary logistical regression with adjustment for age, sex and drugs.Results. HTG was found in 31 / 158 children aged 5–17 years. Its independent predictors were systolic arterial pressure (odds ratio [OR] of top [>108] vs. two bottom [≤108 mm Hg] tertiles 3.85, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.38–10.7, р=0.010), heart rate (HR, OR of top [>78] vs. two bottom [≤78 bpm] tertiles 2.94, 95 % CI 1.20–7.23, р=0.019), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL–C, OR 0.35, 95 % CI 0.13–0.94; р=0.038) of their children; HR (OR of top [>72] vs. two bottom [≤72 bpm] tertiles 3.56, 95 % CI 1.38–9.11, р=0.008), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (OR 2.49, 95 % CI 1.12–5.52, p=0.025]), and type 2 diabetes (OR 25.9, 95 % CI 1.01–665.3; p=0.049) of the parent – proband’s consort. HTG was found in 35 / 255 children aged 18–38 years and was associated with own age (OR 1.10, 95 % CI 1.02–1.19, р=0.012) and male sex (OR 6.21, 95 % CI 2.45–15.8; р=0.000). HTG was independently associated with body mass index (OR top [>25.4] vs. two bottom [≤25.4 kg / m2] tertiles 4.94, 95 % CI 2.13–11.4, р=0.000); basal glycemia (OR top [5.1] vs. two bottom [≤5.1 mmol / l] tertiles 2.52, 95 % CI 1.17–5.43, р=0.019); HDL–C (OR 0.17, CI 0.04–0.81, 0.027); alcohol consumption (OR consuming more than once vs. once a week and less 2.27, 95 % CI 1.02–5.02, p=0.044) of these children; HDL–C (OR 0.19, 95 CI 0.04–0.94; p=0.041) of the proband-parent.Conclusions. HTG in children aged 5–38 years with parental early IHD was independently associated mainly with own characteristics, forming components of metabolic syndrome. Attention should be paid to the dominance of maternal transmission in children and adolescents (age group 5–17 years).

Abstract:
Abstract Metastasis, the movement of cancer cells from one site to another, is responsible for the highest number of cancer deaths, especially in lung cancer patients. In this study, we first identified a prognostic marker of lung adenocarcinoma, TCP-1 β subunit (chaperonin-containing TCP-1β; CCT-β). We showed a compound that disrupted the interaction of CCT-β with β-tubulin killed a highly metastatic non-small cell lung cancer cell line CL1-5 through inducing Endoplasmic reticulum stress and caspases activation. Moreover, at the dosage of EC20, the compound inhibited migration and invasion of the lung cancer cells by suppressing matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2/9 and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related proteins through downregulating mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), Akt/β-catenin and integrin–focal adhesion kinase signaling pathways. Unlike the anticancer drugs, such as Taxol, that target the adenosine triphosphate site of β-tubulin, this study reveals a therapeutic target, β-tubulin/CCT-β complex, for metastatic human lung adenocarcinoma. The study demonstrated CCT-β as a prognostic marker. Targeting β-tubulin/CCT-β complex caused apoptosis and inhibited invasion/migration of CCT-β overexpressed, highly metastatic lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract:
Abstract Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant risk factor for lung cancer. One potential mechanism through which COPD contributes to lung cancer development could be through generation of an immunosuppressive microenvironment that allows tumor formation and progression. In this study, we compared the status of immune cells and immune checkpoint proteins in lung tumors induced by the tobacco smoke carcinogen 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) or NNK + lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a model for COPD-associated lung tumors. Compared with NNK-induced lung tumors, NNK+LPS-induced lung tumors exhibited an immunosuppressive microenvironment characterized by higher relative abundances of PD-1+ tumor-associated macrophages, PD-L1+ tumor cells, PD-1+ CD4 and CD8 T lymphocytes and FOXP3+ CD4 and CD8 T lymphocytes. Also, these markers were more abundant in the tumor tissue than in the surrounding ‘normal’ lung tissue of NNK+LPS-induced lung tumors. PD-L1 expression in lung tumors was associated with IFNγ/STAT1/STAT3 signaling axis. In cell line models, PD-L1 expression was found to be significantly enhanced in phorbol-12-myristate 13-acetate activated THP-1 human monocytes (macrophages) treated with LPS or incubated in conditioned media (CM) generated by non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. Similarly, when NSCLC cells were incubated in CM generated by activated THP-1 cells, PD-L1 expression was upregulated in EGFR- and ERK-dependent manner. Overall, our observations indicate that COPD-like chronic inflammation creates a favorable immunosuppressive microenvironment for tumor development and COPD-associated lung tumors might show a better response to immune checkpoint therapies.

Abstract:
Eight field trials were carried out with various heather cultivars (Calluna vulgaris Carmen, Cuprea, Robert Chapman; Erica tetralix Con Underwood; E. carnea [herbacea] King George and E. cinerea C.D. Eason). Peat at 0-8 msuperscript 3/100 msuperscript 2 was incorporated into the top soil or applied as a layer and soil pH-KCl was maintained at levels between 3 and 6.8. Increasing peat application up to 4 msuperscript 3/100 msuperscript 2 improved the growth and quality (visual rating) of the stand; higher amounts had little additional effect. Peat applied as a layer gave some slightly better results than peat incorporated into the topsoil. A soil pH-KCl value of 4.2 was the optimum for growth of most cultivars and reasonable growth could be expected in the range 3.8-4.7. Cv. King George was more tolerant to high pH than cultivars of the other species tested. In 3 trials with Calluna cultivars MgO application at 150 or 200 kg/ha increased the Mg content of the soil and shoots but had a slight negative effect on growth.
