Abstract: The Ximenez Polyglot Bible was part of a larger educational project—the University of Alcalá—implemented by Cardinal Cisneros at the turn of the sixteenth century in order to revive learning and encourage the study of the Scriptures. Abstract This chapter discusses Erasmus’s understanding of the textual tradition, his project of editing the New Testament text and Johann Froben’s role in it, and his use of manuscripts and the five editions published during his lifetime. It also touches on the reception of his work in Spain, in particular the opposition to his textual criticism and the polemics with Spanish critics (Stunica, Nebrija, and Valladolid articles). Erasmus’s contacts with Cisneros and his awareness of the Polyglot project will be explored. The chapter further discusses Cisneros’s interest in the biblical languages, the preparations for the Polyglot project. This includes collecting manuscripts and assembling a team of scholars, the principles of the edition, reasons for the delayed publication of the Polyglot, and its reception. In the end, textual criticism of the Bible, launched by Italian humanists and advanced by the enterprise of Erasmus and Cisneros, became integrated into theological studies.

The aim of this paper is to present and discuss a newly recovered manuscript of the Septuagint (BH UCM 22 = 442 Rahlfs), a codex sent by the Senate of Venice to Cardinal Cisneros to help the editorial tasks for the Greek column of the Poliglota Complutensis. By considering the manuscript’s external evidences and history of transmission, as well as looking closely at its marginal and interlinear additions and corrections, it shall be demonstrated that it was largely reviewed by Marcus Musurus – who is known to have helped Andreas Asolanus in printing the Aldine Greek Bible (1518) – and by other two (or even three) Hellenists, both in Venice and in Alcalá. This, alongside the data of some preliminary textual collation, confirm the use of the Madrid codex for the editorial process of the two first complete editions of the Bible, mostly contemporary, by Aldus’ house and Cisneros’ team of Hellenists.

In the very particular context of Granada, after it was conquered from the Moors by the Catholic Monarchs, Gabriel Alonso de Herrera, a priest with a passion for gardening, wrote the Libro de Agricultura (1513), under the patronage of Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros. From an analysis of his biography and what the author discusses in his book, we will show that Herrera is a hybrid case between a “superior artisan” and a natural philosopher. In addition, by focusing on agronomy, this study illustrates how classical, Christian and Islamic cultures converged in the Iberian Peninsula.

The site, at the heart of Castile, was central if austere. Surrounded by other foundations of the same period or a little earlier—Toledo, Seville, Granada, Onate, Osuna, Valencia, Siguenza—Alcala ‘s importance lay in the privileges and protections which it enjoyed and which were ratified by Pope Alexander VI and the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella.
