Negative affect (NA) has a longstanding history in cardiovascular health, but the path by which NA leads to cardiovascular disease (CVD) is yet to be defined. Background Cardiovascular disease is the world’s leading cause of death and disability. In recent years the Chinese medicinal mushroom Ganoderma lucidum, also called ling zhi or reishi, has been marketed in Western countries with claims to improve cardiovascular risk factors. These factors include elevated blood glucose, elevated blood pressure and abnormal lipid profiles. Research about the effects of Ganoderma lucidum in humans is limited. Although the clinical efficacy of statins has been well established, there is a wide inter-individual variation in the lipid responses to statins. Pharmacogenetic studies have identified some genetic differences that contribute to the variation, but overall the results have been disappointing.
