A set of codes with 3D periodic boundary conditions has been developed to model dislocations in semiconductors. Several schemes have been used to investigate the atomic structure of dislocations; classical potentials incorporated in a Molecular Dynamics framework, a tightbinding k-space scheme and ab initio pseudopotential codes developed at Cambridge and Edinburgh. An error has been detected in previous work that modelled dislocations using periodic boundary conditions. It is demonstrated, for the 90° and 30° Shockley partials, that a mismatch at the periodic boundaries leads to erroneous ato

The writings of the American pragmatist thinker Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) provide resources for what this thesis calls the “nested continua model” of theological interpretation. A diagrammatic demonstration of iconic relational logic akin to Peirce’s Existential Graphs, the nested continua model is imagined as a series of concentric circles graphed upon a two-dimensional plane. When faced with some problem of interpretation, one may draw discrete markings that signify that problem’s logical distinctions, then represent in the form of circles successive contexts by which these distinctions

Many anticancer therapies, including radiotherapy, act by damaging the deoxyribosenucleic acid (DNA) that is fundamental to cell function and proliferation. H2AX is a histone protein associated with DNA that is phosphorylated to produce γH2AX in response to DNA double strand breaks (DSBs), the most lethal lesions caused in cancer cells. This thesis examines the translation of γH2AX detection assays to clinical situations in order to provide biomarkers of response that might help to guide the treatment of cancer patients. γH2AX immunohistochemistry was developed in preclinical xenograft models,

Abstract:
In this thesis we study the problem of robotic interaction with objects from a flexible perspective that complements the rigid force-closure approach. In a flexible interaction the object is not firmly bound to the robot (immobilized), which leads to many interesting scenarios. We focus on the secure kind of flexible interactions, commonly referred to as caging grasps. In this context, the adjective secure implies that the object is not able to escape arbitrarily far away from the robot which is caging it. A cage is a secure flexible interaction because it does not immobilize the object, but r

Abstract:
This work deals with the OpenCL technology and its use for the task of object detection. The introduction is devoted to description of OpenCL fundamentals, as well as basic theory of object detection. Next chapter of the work is analysis, with design proposal which takes into consideration the possibilities of OpenCL. Further, there's description of implementation of detection application and experimental evaluation of detector's performance. The last chapter summarizes the achieved results.

Background: Persistent cough following an acute respiratory tract infection is a challenging and frequently encountered problem in primary care. Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) and Bordetella pertussis (pertussis) particularly predispose patients to persistent cough. Whilst the incidence of M. pneumoniae is highest in children, pertussis may also occur in adults. Method: Four studies were conducted for this thesis. First, a systematic review to assess the diagnostic accuracy of symptoms and signs in the clinical recognition of M. pneumoniae. Second, a retrospective analysis of a cohort o

Abstract:
Care transition, the process of moving from community care to residential care, is one of the biggest changes that older people can experience in their later life. Evidence from the literature suggests that older people's experiences of care transition tend to be negative and traumatic, with most of them being little involved in the process of care transition. How older people exercise choice during the period of care transition is important for understanding their experiences of care transition for the following two reasons: first, choice has been referred to in the literature as the key to l

The work described in this thesis concerns the use and quality of primary care service use by people living beyond a diagnosis of breast, colorectal and prostate cancer and long-term risks associated with cancer. Firstly, the thesis provides a background for this work, with a definition of long-term survivors as those living at least five years past cancer, and the role of primary care in the care of this population. The second section describes use of the General Practice Research Database amongst a cohort of cancer survivors compared to a control population. Breast and colorectal cancer surv

This thesis investigates the emergence of an internationally renowned psychiatric community in Uganda. Starting at the beginning of colonial rule in 1894, it traces the changing nature of mental health care both within and beyond the state, examining the conditions that allowed psychiatry to develop as a significant intellectual tradition in the years following Independence in 1962. This ‘golden age’ of psychiatry saw Uganda establish itself as a leader of mental health care in Africa, an aspect of history that is all the more marked for its contrast with the almost complete collapse of mental
