Abstract:
AbstractInterdisciplinarity has become prominent in science policy and academia because of its potential to lead to more interesting, innovative and responsible research. However, its implications for the development of academic careers and identities are not well known, partly because different disciplinary communities regard it differently. Shedding light on how academic identities are constructed and negotiated in the context of interdisciplinary research, this chapter presents a discourse analysis of the biographical narratives that scholars from different disciplines—including mathematics, computer science, economics and archaeology—articulated during qualitative research interviews. The analysis illustrates how these narratives allowed the interviewees to identify themselves as members of specific disciplinary communities, having the personal traits these require, and emphasizing or playing down their interdisciplinary moves accordingly. The findings suggest that individuals’ biographical narratives deserve careful attention because they contribute to the establishment, reproduction and maintenance of academic disciplines. Consequently, they have the potential to make the narratives that constitute the ‘core’ of a discipline become, little by little, more heterogeneous.

Abstract:
The work of career interest assessment bridges various career interest theories and their applications in practice. However, the interface between theory and application in career interests has often been challenged in terms of cross-cultural validity and the role in explaining and predicting behaviors for specific groups such as different genders in a cultural setting. Based on measures of career interests, the construct validity of the important theoretical models for career interests is first reviewed in this chapter. The predictive validities of career interest are then examined in terms of career development, human resources and organizational behaviors, and academic achievement. Some interesting interactions between cultures and gender on career interests are reviewed in terms of the factor structure of interests. Finally, future research directions of career interest assessment are discussed in terms of cultural validity and cultural specificity.

With an increase in precarity globally, there is a need to emphasize proactive self-management of the PhD process for international doctoral students. They may better manage their PhD training journeys if approached as a quest for life career construction. This chapter contributes to research that situates PhD training experience in self-construction of career. The author highlights the self-work that international doctoral students undertake as they construct life careers through a PhD process. She concludes that international doctoral students begin to design their careers from the PhD application process and continue throughout the space and span of the training. She recommends that the counseling field explore different ways to use self and career design approaches to develop self-management orientation resources for international doctoral students.

Chapter 7 moves beyond workplace flexibility to consider career flexibility, which refers to the varied career choices working mothers make as they pursue their work/life path. We begin by introducing a more expansive view of career beyond the traditional career ladder. This holistic career model encompasses work, family, and community interests and activity. This career metaphor more accurately fits the reality of today’s workplace for men and women. It also gives working mothers authority to consider something beyond the next promotion as they construct their careers. We then go into more depth on two of the more prominent twists working mothers make: taking time off from paid work and starting their own business. We focus on the tactics working mothers can use to ensure that these options fit with their work/family interests.

Abstract:
Today, individuals work later in life than ever before in an ever-changing world of work. Thus, late career workers now have different needs, experiences, and preferences, and their transitions into retirement are much more varied (and far less linear) than those for workers in previous decades. This chapter provides evidence-based recommendations on supportive career pathways systems for late career workers. It begins with an overview of research-based theories and constructs about work-related aging, followed by human resource management policies and practices to support career pathways systems for older workers. It then provides practical guidance on how career pathways systems can promote successful work engagement throughout the life span and directions for future research to advance the field of aging and career pathways.

A phenomenological design was used in this study and data were collected by means of semi-structured in-depth interviews. The study group was formed by maximum variation sampling and snow ball sampling. Nine school principals voluntarily joined the study and narrated their career construction stories. In the study, it was found that school principals started their career by the influence of an administrator, a colleague in their workplace, or their spouses. Majority of the participants started their management career as vice-principals. The changes in work environment increased their management skills and helped them gain experience. This chapter discusses the concept of skills in care work and demonstrates how it has been discursively constructed in Japan and Taiwan. The kind of work that the migrant care workers undertake is differentiated according to the migration-care nexus resulting in very different kind of tasks these migrants are required to perform. Secondly, the global care labor market is unevenly constructed with different requirements and conditions. The migrant care workers are differentiated according to the capital they possess and what they acquire in their migration process. What became apparent is that unlike skilled work where people can step-up their career by gaining skills and in some cases permanent residence, care labor market in East Asia does not lead to unilateral development of careers. The global care labor market expanded the opportunity for migrants, but it is not only uneven but also precarious and migrants expect short-term return without great expectations for career development.

Abstract:
Development of competence has been one of the major issues and goals of modern academic design and engineering education. Nevertheless, our literature study revealed that we are still far from a common interpretation of design competence. There are different views on it which we called reductionist and holistic. In the reductionist view, design competence is considered to be not else than a set of low level competencies such as drawing skills, spatial vision, specialized knowledge, intuitiveness and creativity, verbal communication, and technical writing, which have been typically addressed di

Abstract:
This work focus on the hydrodynamical problem of an LNG carrier near a GBS-type offshore terminal subject to incoming waves in medium deep to shallow water conditions. The work is restricted to 2D and the ship is restrained from moving. The resonant behaviour of the fluid in the gap between the ship and the terminal is investigated. The problem is investigated by means of a numerical model and model tests. Potential theory is assumed and a linear as well as a nonlinear time-domain numerical wavetank based on a boundary element method with a Mixed Eularian-Lagrangian approach is implemented for
