Abstract:
Raising a child with multiple special needs or disabilities is a time-consuming and difficult task that exceeds the usual parameters of parenting. This book examines all the facets of that task, from the better-known physical, financial, and emotional burdens to the previously invisible moral work involved. Drawing from narratives written by parents of children with a variety of special needs, academic research in ethics and disability, and personal experience in pediatrics, this book begins to recognize the moral consequences of providing long-term care for a child with complex needs. Abstract:
In this chapter we use case studies and men’s own words to show how each man’s caregiving style reflected his sense of personal identity. We also examine if and how the legacy of his culture and family prepared him for the role of caregiver. Witnessing and taking part in caregiving earlier in life supported men’s belief in the moral worth of both affective and instrumental acts of providing care. The self-worth individuals found in caregiving both reflected and paralleled the self-esteem men found in maintaining important personal values, such as compassion, loyalty, helpfulness to others, and

African-American men revealed a unique type of generativity. It was rooted in their experiences as African-American men, including the foundation they received from family and their experiences of marginalization and racism in the wider world. They believed they had received a legacy from ancestors that was “a responsibility, a warning, and a promise to the five generations that follow them” (Black, Groce, & Harmon, 2011, p. 167). In this chapter we explore the contextual generativity that men disclose. That is, generativity that sprang from the unique circumstances of their lives as Afric

In this chapter, we explore the experience of an elder husband who was the primary informal caregiver for his wife of 60 years. We describe their encounters as caregiver and care recipient through the years as a pilgrimage. We do so because we believe this word has a revered connotation. Generally, two or more people travel together to a pilgrimage site for the sake of gaining spiritual insight or meaning. In a pilgrimage, the journey toward the site becomes an important part of the sacred quest. The husband who is the subject of this chapter cared for his wife for over 25 years. Through the y

Abstract:
To emphasize the complexity and difficulty of parenting a child with special needs, this chapter introduces and defines the term “extreme caregiving.” Extreme caregiving involves the taking on of professional medical roles by a nonprofessional parent. It differs from both ordinary parenting and professional caregiving in that it is done in the home, often without respite or foreseeable endpoint. Unlike professional caregiving, it involves an intense personal relationship between parent and child. The need for extreme caregiving extends through multiple pediatric syndromes and disabling conditi

Abstract:
Caregiving is essential for both maintaining cultures and building human capital. Yet unfortunately caregiving (paid, unpaid) is seriously and systemically undervalued. The undervaluation of caregiving leads naturally to the undervaluation of caregiving ambition, the strong desire of many women and men to not just care for others out of duty or obligation but with passion and ambition. The more society tries to categorize—and limit—caregiving as an obligation rather than as an ambition, the more it rings false, the harder it becomes to fulfill both caregiving ambition and career ambition, and
