Abstract:
Aim: Determine the prevalence and incidence of dental caries in children´s deciduous teeth, who were treated with ART technique. Methods: In T1, 62 children were examined for being between 3 and 6 years of age. A questionnaire was applied to the parents or guardians of the children involved in the research, to analyze their knowledge about eating habits and oral hygiene. An intra-oral examination of children from 3 to 6 years old was carried out and dental treatment was performed by the ART technique. Six months after,(T2), the clinical examination was redone to investigate the restorations´stability. Results: In T1, 94 carie cavities were found in 19 children and 86 were recommended for restoration with ART. In T2, 58 restorations were damaged or lost and 15 children had 20 new carie cavities. Conclusion: The prevalence of dental caries in the deciduous dentition was 38.8% and the incidence was 31.9%. In T2, the majority restorations class I and II were damaged or lost. ART technique is an option, despite the high failure in ART, especially for child population with deciduous teeth that has limited access to dental services. However, restorations should be supervised and healthy eating habits implemented.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the effectiveness of various caries removal techniques in mandibular primary molars using Smart Burs, atraumatic restorative technique (ART) (mechanical caries removal) and Carie-care (chemomechanical caries removal [CMCR]) among primary school children in clinical and community-based settings. Materials and Methods: A total of 80 carious primary mandibular molars were selected for the study from the dental clinic and community. They were equally assigned to four groups according to caries removal technique and also by the operating site. In Group 1, caries was removed using Carie-care in the dental clinic and in Group 2, with Smart Burs in the dental clinic. In Group 3, caries was removed using Carie-care in the field and in Group 4, with the ART in the field. The time taken for caries removal, the efficacy of caries removal and patient acceptance were evaluated with different caries removal techniques. Statistical Analysis: The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis by ANOVA test. Results: In clinical settings, Carie-care was time-consuming but was more efficient with increased acceptance than Smart Burs and the result was found to be significant statistically (P < 0.05). In community-based settings, Carie-care was more efficient, less time consuming, and showed an increased acceptance when compared to atraumatic restorative treatment and the result was found to be significant statistically (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The CMCR technique was superior to the mechanical caries removal technique in primary teeth among school children in terms of time, efficacy, and acceptance in both clinical- and community-based settings.

Abstract:
A number of Archaistic elements appeared in the sculpture and architecture of Asia Minor during the fourth century BC. Many of them are connected with works produced by the Hekatomnid dynasty, the ruling house of Caria during much of the fourth century BC. The main purpose of this thesis is to catalogue and investigate these elements and to try to explain the reasons for their appearance against the background of Archaism in the fourth century BC. One of the most important features was the curled hairstyle, which was used by the female members of the Hekatomnid family. In the first three chapters the use of this hairstyle is examined and its origins traced in the Archaic period in order to determine its Greek or Persian connections. Its continuation into Classical times, and its revival in the late fifth and fourth centuries as an Archaistic feature, are also considered. Two subsequent chapters discuss further aspects of Archaism in the art and architecture of Asia Minor in the fourth century BC. One examines the preservation or re-introduction of Archaic features in the cult-images or xoana in which the area abounded. The other considers the mentality that lay behind the way in which important temples such as the Ephesian Artenvision were rebuilt using elements from their Archaic predecessors, while new monuments like those at Labraunda incorporated features from Archaic architecture in their decoration. A further chapter reviews the extent and nature of Archaistic works of art from Mainland Greece in the late fifth and fourth centuries, in order to present an overall background against which to judge the examples from Asia Minor. In the Conclusion the evidence from previous chapters is summarised and an attempt made to draw together the reasons for the appearance of Archaistic elements in the art of Asia Minor, and the relationship with the Archaistic art of Mainland Greece.

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to make a systematic study of the architectonical decoration in Augustan and Julio-Claudian Asia Minor. This project had its origins from the analysis of the architectonical decoration of “Tomba Bella” a Julio-Claudian funerary monument located in the North Necropolis of Hierapolis in Phrygia. The research was focused on the architectonical decorations of Hierapolis monuments of the Augustan and Julio-Claudian phase. The evidence suggested the need to investigate also the surrounding area of Caria and Ionia, in which recent research pointed out monuments of the early imperial period. All the published monuments of this period were catalogued, using an informatic system, to develop a typological description of the architectural elements; a contextual analysis of the main cities and related buildings was carried out, focusing on the well edited monuments and their architectural decorations. The concluding observation regard how previous styles have influenced the architectonical solutions in the Julio-Claudian age and their connection with Rome’s traditions, that spread over in Asia Minor during the Augustan period.

Abstract:
According to the basic assumption that monuments are the aesthetic mediators of memory—primarily the memory of the dead—the essay aims to discuss the imaginary of the body as a sepulchral monument. Taking as a starting point the legend of Artemisia of Caria, who celebrated the memory of her dead husband/brother Mausolus both by having the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus erected and by drinking Mausolus’ ashes so as to turn herself into his living sarcophagus, the analytic focus is on the replication of similar symbolic practices in contemporary culture, namely in the field of organ transplantation. The transplanted patient receives and preserves within his/her body the organ of the deceased donor, thus becoming, even if unintentionally, the donor’s memorial monument.

Abstract:
Making an effective presentation of the scientific activity that took place in the context of the E-Learning Expo, through a significant analysis, is a welcome but complex task. The E-Learning EXPO is an experience that has occupied CARID (University Centre for Research, Teaching Innovation and Distance Learning) University of Ferrara, Italy for the last two years in the creation of an environment in which demand and supply, theory and practice of e-learning could successfully meet up (Frignani, Galliani, Giacomantonio, 2005; Poletti, 2006). The intention of CARID, as creator and scientific director of the event, was not merely to provide a showcase, but an event packed with conferences and debates aiming at taking stock of the state of the art, not only as regards methodological reflection on elearning, but also as regards the application of e-learning as a method to be used in a variety of public and private sectors, ranging from school and university to professional and corporate training, from enterprises to banks, from environment to education, from the health service to public administration, as far as e-government and e-democracy.

Abstract:
Comparative phylogenetic analyses based on linguistic data are useful for reconstructing the cultural evolution of recent expansions of humans around the world. It is an exciting time for phylogenetic comparative studies in lowland South America given the emergence of more comprehensive ethnolinguistic datasets. Phylogenetic methods can now be applied to more lowland language families to facilitate the study of pre-historical population expansions and cultural variation. This chapter investigates phylogenetic relationships among the six major lowland South American language families using structural linguistic data. Two cultural traits that are likely to have deep evolutionary histories that extend back to last common ancestors of several large language families include uxorilocal postmarital residence (women continue to live near natal families after marriage) and partible paternity beliefs (conception belief that multiple men can be co-genitors of one child). The Carib-Pano-Tupi-Jê clade is mostly uxorilocal with partible paternity beliefs in thirty-eight of forty-three societies.

This article offers a vision of how Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have adopted the principles of the bioeconomy in the last two decades with different levels of socio-economic impact. The analysis was carried out with 706 publications obtained from the SCOPUS database between 2003-2020. The results allowed us to identify that in LAC, there are capacities for the development of the bioeconomy; however, these potentialities are disparate at the country level. It was identified that the three countries that most promote the development of this issue are Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. The structural analysis of the bioeconomy work showed a high rate of cooperation between LAC institutions with institutions in North America, Asia, and Europe. The relevance of the bioeconomy in LAC is highlighted as an alternative for growth with emissions decoupling, contributing to productive diversification, especially in the agricultural and agro-industrial sectors. Abstract:
Worldwide regulations currently set very stringent emissions standards for new on-road heavy-duty diesel engines (HDDE’s). For example, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) require 2010 and subsequent HDDE and vehicles to emit less than 0.2 g/bhp-hr (0.27 g/kW-hr) NOx and 5.0 g/bhp-hr (6.7 g/kW-hr) CO in addition to other strictly regulated pollutants. Diesel or biodiesel fired Microturbine engines are in use in hybrid electric vehicular (HEV) urban bus applications because of their extremely low emissions. In Capstone’s model years 2001 through 2003, liquid fueled gas turbines were certified by CARB for on-road heavy duty engine use, including urban bus applications. The engines achieved a low emission level of 0.7 g/hp-hr (0.94 g/kW-hr) NOx, 0.2 g/hp-hr (0.27 g/kW-hr) CO and 0.01 g/hp-hr (0.013 g/kW-hr) PM, which met emissions compliance levels for EPA and CARB regulations until 2010. To meet the upcoming 2010 EPA and CARB HDDE regulations, continuous research and development efforts have been taken at Capstone Turbine Corporation for its C30 family engines to further reduce the criteria pollutant emissions. Pollutant emissions were measured and analyzed for a Capstone C30 engine using ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and five other opportunity fuels to obtain their actual cycle emissions for a typical New York City M60 route. By injector modification alone, the C30 engine was able to achieve 62% reduction in NOx emission. Additionally, an adjustment of turbine exit temperature was able to further reduce NOx. It was predicted that the liquid-fueled C30 engines would be able to demonstrate the compliance to the 2010 EPA/CARB new ultra-low emission standards.

Abstract:
Exhaust emissions from heavy-duty diesel engines have been legislated since the 1960’s and continue until 2010. Smoke emissions continue to be controlled but exhaust odor regulations were never promulgated. Gaseous emissions (oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons) were not regulated until 1973 and particulate matter first regulated in 1988. Emission regulations have been through several periods of cooperation between regulators and manufacturers but there have also been periods of conflict and lawsuits. The most recent issues are with the October 2002 requirements of the Consent Decrees signed by seven diesel engine manufacturers and USEPA/US DOJ/CARB. Also the 2007/2010 regulations are under review.

Diesel or biodiesel fired Microturbine engines are in use in hybrid electric vehicular (HEV) urban bus applications in part because of their low emissions. A vehicular test cycle based on practical driving data of The New York City M60 route duty cycle for an urban bus is presented and discussed. Engine only test cycles that would represent in vehicle engine usage are also discussed. In the process of developing new technologies to meet the upcoming 2010 EPA and CARB HDDE regulations, Capstone Turbine has demonstrated a significant reduction in the emissions of its C30 family engines fired with ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) without any post-combustion treatment. The technical approaches which yielded the emissions improvements, included enhancements to the fuel vaporization and mixing processes in an effort to reduce local primary zone temperatures. With only injector modifications the ULSD-fired engine achieved emission levels of 0.046 g/hp-hr NOx, 0.87 g/hp-hr CO, 0.003 g/hp-hr PM, 0.013 g/hp-hr NMHC and 0.006 g/hp-hr HCHO in a recent third party demonstration test. NOx levels of 5–7 ppmV at 15% O2 were achieved for a power range of 50–100% while running on diesel fuel #2. With these new injector modifications the C30 engine has the potential capability to meet the same HDDE standards while burning other opportunity liquid fuels, including biodiesel, and ethanol.

Abstract:
Land-based water injection into the combustor of gas turbines is a state-of-the-art technology, which is a low-risk, low-cost option for reduction of gas-turbine emissions. A controller for a water-injected combustor (WIC) system was designed for automatic control of water injection. Steady-state tests of the WIC system in an LM2500 propulsion-engine facility yielded basic engine-interactive data for the WIC’s unique automatic software logic. The steady-state tests demonstrated anticipated NOx reductions in conformity with proposed (but not implemented) California Air Resources Board (CARB) mandates. The controller automatically compensates for the effects of humidity, temperature and engine load. This automatic response was expressly designed to deliver acceptable water rates even during the abrupt power excursions encountered in emergencies, including collision-avoidance crashback maneuvers. The transient test data indicated unacceptable flameout in the engine during engine deceleration to idle speed. Detailed analyses of the flameouts show that the controller can reduce water flow within two deciseconds of a change in power demand. However, the residence time of water in the manifolds can be about a second for some operating conditions. Several fixes for this problem are described.

Abstract:
Stringent emission regulations mandated by California air regulation board (CARB) require monitoring the upstream exhaust gas oxygen (UEGO) sensor for any possible malfunction causing the vehicle emissions to exceed certain thresholds. Six faults have been identified to potentially cause the UEGO sensor performance to deteriorate and potentially lead to instability of the air-fuel ratio (AFR) control loop. These malfunctions are either due to an additional delay or an additional lag in the transition of the sensor response from lean to rich or rich to lean. Current technology detects the faults the same way (approximated by a delay type fault) and does not distinguish between the different faults. In the current paper, a statistics based approach is developed to diagnose these faults. Specifically, the characteristics of a non-normal distribution function are estimated based on the UEGO sensor output and used to detect and isolate the faults. When symmetric operation is detected, a system identification process is employed to estimate the parameters of the dynamic system and determine the type of operation. The proposed algorithm has been demonstrated on real data obtained from both Ford F150 and Mustang V6 vehicles.

Abstract:
This paper presents an evaluation of the applicability of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Engines (HCCI) for small-scale cogeneration (less than 1 MWe) in comparison to five previously analyzed prime movers. The five comparator prime movers include stoichiometric spark-ignited (SI) engines, lean burn SI engines, diesel engines, microturbines and fuel cells. The investigated option, HCCI engines, is a relatively new type of engine that has some fundamental differences with respect to other prime movers. Here, the prime movers are compared by calculating electric and heating efficiency, fuel consumption, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and capital and fuel cost. Two cases are analyzed. In Case 1, the cogeneration facility requires combined power and heating. In Case 2, the requirement is for power and chilling. The results show that HCCI engines closely approach the very high fuel utilization efficiency of diesel engines without the high emissions of NOx and the expensive diesel fuel. HCCI engines offer a new alternative for cogeneration that provides a unique combination of low cost, high efficiency, low emissions and flexibility in operating temperatures that can be optimally tuned for cogeneration systems. HCCI engines are the most efficient engine technology that meets that oncoming 2007 CARB NOx standards for cogeneration engines. The HCCI engine appears to be a good option for cogeneration systems and merits more detailed analysis and experimental demonstration.

Abstract:
Stringent emission regulations mandated by California air regulation board (CARB) require monitoring the upstream exhaust gas oxygen (UEGO) sensor for any possible malfunction causing the vehicle emissions to exceed standard thresholds. Six faults have been identified that may potentially cause the UEGO sensor performance to deteriorate and lead to instability of the air-fuel ratio (AFR) closed-loop control system. These malfunctions are either due to an additional delay or an additional lag in the transition of the sensor response from lean to rich or rich to lean. In this paper, a novel non-intrusive approach is developed to diagnose these faults using a combination of a statistical method and a system identification process. In the second part of this work, a control strategy is presented that utilizes the type, the direction and the magnitude of the fault present to update the gains of the controller for the closed-loop air-fuel ratio control system. The proposed strategy does not require modifying the controller structure and only adapts the baseline gains of the controller and delay compensator to match the actual system dynamics (in presence of fault). The proposed approach has been demonstrated on a vehicle (Mustang V6 3.7L) where different faults were induced, and the emissions associated with each fault were measured to show the improvement.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to establish a concise structural model of the human musculoskeletal system (HMS) that can be applied to an exercise therapy that treats malfunctions or distortions of the human body. There exist a number of traditional exercise therapy methods in Japan and China, but any systematic approaches for learning, coaching or training are not found to the best of the author’s knowledge. Among such approaches, we deal with an exercise therapy called Somatic Balance Restoring Therapy (SBRT) in which a patient executes a series of non-invasive and painless motions in face-up/down laid posture. Although thousands of results have been piled up in a fixed-format data base, justification for the SBRT has not been provided in bio/mechanical engineering sense. The purpose of modeling is a first step for this holistic approach. For such reasons, the model must be useful and uncomplicated for therapists to identify the problematic areas of the human body with adequate visualization while maintaining a theoretical thoroughness in mechanics or dynamics. To bridge multi-body dynamics and the SBRT, we have utilized a human body model with a collection of joint connected 15 rigid bodies in a topological tree configuration as used for humanoid robot with 80 Degrees-of-Freedom (DOF). In order to achieve the purpose stated above, we have developed a static force/torque balance equation for each body element. In addition, we will describe modeling processes, derivation of static equations, and estimation of parameters/states and verification based on the analysis of the FPS experimental data, and contact forces are parameterized with quantitative values to be given by the Force Plate System (FPS), installed at CARIS at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, forecasts for economic and social decline in Latin America and the Caribbean are alarming. The region will face a 9.4% contraction in its economy, among the most severe in the world. Coping with the pandemic is hindered by inequality, weak and insufficient social protection and limited public health capabilities. Up to 52 million people could fall into poverty and 40 million could lose their jobs – a 15-year setback for the region. Yet, an elite remains ‘immune’ to the contagion of the economic crisis. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 8 new billionaires in LAC: 1 every 2 weeks since the lockdowns began. The richest people have increased their fortune by $48.2bn since March 2020, equivalent to a third of the total stimulus packages of all countries in the region. In this paper, Oxfam proposes a series of reforms targeting those who have being less affected by the pandemic. They include a net wealth tax that could potentially generate $14.3bn, 50 times more than billionaires in the region pay now in theory, under current tax systems.
